I know it sounds obvious, but keep the darn ball in play! I can’t tell you how many matches I’ve witnessed where the player who “won,” didn’t really “win.” Nope, it was the other player who “lost.” You see, the runner-up gave the match away by missing too many shots, and most were makable. If you lose a point because your opponent hit a winner, fine! Good for them! Not much you can do about that but say: “Nice shot.” That’s how you want to lose a point, not by missing an easy ball.

tennis tip #437

If you hit more unforced errors than your opponent hits winners, then you have given the match away. I know it’s fun (dare I say tempting), to hit hard, to smash a ball past your foe, and sometimes it’ll even work! But as you know, more power usually equates to more risk and thus more errors. Did you know that when Nadal won the French Open a few years back without dropping a set (21 straight!!!), he only won 52% of the points he played. Isn’t that amazing?! So of course points are at a premium, so why give them away? Give your opponent another chance to miss by keeping your shot in play. How? Take a little pace off the ball, aim more up the middle, higher over the net, use spin to keep it in. Sure there will be times where you can “go for it” (especially if the score is in your favor: 40-15 for example); but the best strategy is to play smart; so do the right thing … keep it in play!!!

WET COURTS?

POLICY REMINDER: If it has rained or is misting, and if the white lines are slippery, you are not permitted to be on the courts. It is dangerous, and you could slip and fall. If you are asked to stop playing under these conditions, please cooperate. The management thanks you.
