The Lady Senators in the Community Just as important as success on the court and in the classroom, giving back to the community has always been a key philosophy of the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team. The success on the court is evident. Beginning its 23rd year of existence, AUM has made 18 NAIA National Tournament appearances, won 71.6 percent of its games and had 23 All-America selections. In the classroom, the Lady Senators consistently finish semesters with a team cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0. During the 2010 spring semester, the women’s basketball team had 11 players earn a 3.0 GPA, including four with a perfect 4.0. The Lady Senators also had a league-high five student-athletes named to the 2009-10 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. The women’s basketball team has also earned both of the AUM Honor Student-Athlete awards, sponsored by the SSAC. But t component of the Lady Senators’ philosophy that is often overlooked is the way the team gives back. During the past year, the women’s basketball program has participated in a variety of events in the community, benefitting youth, seniors and even one of Montgomery’s finest. One of the most popular events the Lady Senators participate in is the annual Make a Difference Day. During the event, players and coaches interact with local youth, reading books and doing various activities with children at the Molina Learning Center in Montgomery. Along with reading to the children, members of the team also help the center’s students pick out books for their own personal library. The team works with AUM professor Dr. Nancy Anderson on the project. Another is the Angels for the Elderly project, through which the team spends time with the elderly most Fridays throughout the year. During a two-hour visit, members of the team enjoy doing activities with members, including reading, playing dominos, making arts and crafts and singing. The team has also held a one-day clinic for members of the Prattville YMCA, at which they taught basketball fundamentals and life skills to more than 40 local youth. During the holiday season, the Lady Senators are active in the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. They also participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Molina Learning Center, where members of the team made readings of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech for students and helped clean the grounds of the complex. The team also spent a day at Trinity Church Preschool, conducting fitness activities for members of the preschool. Recently, members of the team helped AUM students move into the residence halls and competed in the city of Montgomery’s Dragon Boat Races on the Alabama River, as well as spearheaded AUM’s first blood drive of the year as part of its partnership with the NAIA Leadership Program. This year’s drive benefited Montgomery Police Corporal David Brown, who was injured in two motor vehicle accidents in early September. The results of the blood drive were staggering, as 83 pints of blood were donated, well over the 60 pints that were targeted. The women’s team also sponsored the 11th annual Senator Stampede on September 25, where 181 runners participated. The Stampede consists of a 5K race and a one-mile fun race, with all proceeds from the event being split between the women’s basketball program and the AUM Wellness Program.

2010-11 AUM WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
2010-11 Season Outlook Last season, the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team finished 15-15 overall and tied for fourth in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Despite the loss of four of the top five scorers and rebounders from that team, eight letterwinners return for the 2010-11 season, and Lady Senators head coach Dan Davis is filled with optimism about the upcoming season. “I am really exciting about the season and this team,” Davis said. “Statistically, it might look like we are missing some pieces, but a lot of what we struggled with last year does not show up in a box score. We have more character, toughness, competitiveness and cohesiveness this year. More importantly, this team has heart, and that will take us a long way.” Seniors Carlie Ainsworth and Haley McIntyre highlight the returning players, as each has earned All-SSAC honors during their tenure with the Lady Senators. However, perhaps even larger than the impact they will make on the court is the leadership and work ethic that each possesses. “You know what you are going to get out of those two every day,” Davis said of Ainsworth and McIntyre. “They are going to bring the intensity, effort and leadership, not only on game day, but in every practice. They lead by example, are unselfish and want to win. From a coaching standpoint, you can’t ask for much more from a player.” Senior Rachel Cunningham and her sophomore sister, Caitlin, return to anchor the post position, while junior Courtney Thacker and sophomores Kamesha Strong, Stephanie Torrence and Candace Dyer will provide an option in the backcourt. Key newcomers include senior Lacey Griffin, who transferred to AUM for her final season from West Alabama, and junior guards Areial Woods and Haley Williams, both of whom enjoyed standout sophomore seasons at the junior college level. Backcourt The Lady Senators return five guards from last season, all of which appeared in nine or more games in 2009-10. Ainsworth is expected to provide the biggest impact among the returnees at the position, after averaging 11.9 points per game and earning all-conference honors as a junior. “Carlie has been the heart and soul of our program the last three years,” Davis said. “Last year, she hit 87 3-pointers and I think she could make more this year. She will be looked on to score for us again this year, and with our up-tempo offense, I know she will excel. She is an unselfish player, whose main purpose for playing is to win. She is the epitome of the type of player we try to recruit into our program.” Also back for the AUM is Strong, who started 13 games last season at the point guard position. “Kamesha is a tremendous leader, even as an underclassman,” Davis said. “She has improved her outside shooting and can really push the tempo. Without question, she is one of our hardest workers and will be a key part of our success this year.” Torrence and Dyer are also back for their sophomore seasons, with each looking at a
Senior Carlie Ainsworth
more significant role during the 2010-11 season. “Stephanie really came on strong down the stretch last year and has come back in incredible shape,” Davis said of Torrence. “She is a very fundamental player and can really score on the offensive side of the ball. I think she will take on a much more significant role with our team this year.” “Candace will have an increased role in our offense this year,” Davis said. “I think her strengths really fit well in our new offense and that she will be someone we can look to when we need a spark off the bench.” Williams joins the Lady Senators from Southern Union Community College, where she was an all-conference performer as a sophomore. Williams averaged better than 10 points per game in her final season at SUCC and will add another dimension to the AUM offense. “She may be our best pure shooter,” Davis said of Williams. “She is quick and can play both the point guard and shooting guard. She is a worker and a competitor.” Also joining the squad from the JUCO ranks is Woods, who was the starting point guard for Shelton State Community College’s back-to-back conference championship teams. In addition to being a lock-down defender, Woods is able to create shots for others and for herself. “I can see Areial being successful both at the point guard or shooting guard position for us,” said Davis. “She is good at getting others involved and knocking down an open shot. She is also a very good defender.” Frontcourt With the loss of All-American Cassie Moore at the center position, the Lady Senators will enter the 2010-11 season without a true post player. However, AUM will make up for that loss with improved team speed and the ability for its post players to shoot from behind the arc. One of the biggest additions to the roster is the return of McIntyre, who missed last season while recovering from a knee injury. During the 2008-09 season, she averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds as the Lady Senators finished 20-9
and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. “Adding Haley back to our roster is like adding a coach on the floor,” Davis said. “We missed her leadership last year and her ability to extend the opposition. She has the ability to play all five positions on the floor and, given her ability to knock down shots from outside, will be very difficult for people to defend.” Caitlin Cunningham also returns as an option inside, following a freshman campaign in which she averaged nearly five points and three rebounds per game. “Caitlin had a good freshman season and has added the 3-point shot to her game this offseason,” Davis added. “She is a back-to-the-basket player, but can spread defenses away from the basket with her ability to hit a jump shot.” Rachel Cunningham will also provide a presence inside and is projected as the starter at the post position. “I think Rachel will have a much larger role for us this season,” Davis said. “Rachel will be able to open our transition simply by her ability to run the court. She can shoot well from the outside, which will open up some other things for our offense.” Thacker, who knocked down 21 3-pointers last season, also returns and will see time at the guard and forward position this season. “Courtney is a shooter,” said Davis. “She has really improved on putting the ball on the floor, which will make her even more dangerous. With her size, she will probably play some forward for us as well, which could really create some mismatches for us.” A transfer from West Alabama, Griffin will also see action in both the frontcourt and backcourt. Griffin has the ability to hit shots from behind the arc, but also the size and toughness to play in the paint. “Lacey can really shoot the ball, but can also create her own shot off the dribble,” Davis said of Griffin. “In her two years playing at Alabama Southern Community College, she made more than 100 3-pointers and had a nice season last year at West Alabama. She is a tough, hardnosed competitor that can really help us.”

The NAIA and Southern States Athletic Conference
The 2010-11 academic year will mark the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its 16 member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runnersup. Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National As-
sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 18 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black studentathletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to studentathletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities.
34
In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association. MISSION STATEMENT Auburn University at Montgomery’s mission, as the metropolitan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution, is to foster and exemplify excellence in education through instruction, research and service. Auburn University at Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contemporary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state and region. AUM provides academic programs that are characteristic of the finest traditions of scholarship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of government, regional economic growth and cultural enrichment through the arts. WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY? Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your college education. This year alone, Auburn University at Montgomery offered students more than $4 million in Pell Grants and another $20 million in student loans. Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford. A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1 At Auburn Montgomery you won’t spend your freshman year in classes filled with 300 of your peers. Our classes are deliberately kept small (an average of 20 students), giving you more personal attention and allowing your professors to get to know you. BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEEL With programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Montgomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a five-minute walk on campus. FOUR-DAY WEEKS At Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also find AUM can accommodate just about any schedule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly.

AUM ATHLETICS FACILITIES Since the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University at Montgomery has been know throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness on the field and court of play. Furthermore, AUM offers some of the best facilities in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit. The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a refinishing of the gym floor as well as the installation of new bleachers that seat 2,760. The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the newly built on-campus softball field, on which the AUM softball team was able to play all home games during the 2010
season. The field is part of the AUM Softball Complex, which will eventually include the construction of a press box, concessions stand, locker rooms and offices for the AUM softball coaching staff. The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refinished playing surface for each of its 10 courts. Aside from serving as the site for all AUM men’s and women’s home tennis matches, the AUM Tennis Complex also serves as a host site for the annual Small College Blue & Gray Classic held by the city of Montgomery. The AUM Soccer Complex has undergone several updates since its construction in 1985. In the early 2000’s new Olympic-style goals were installed along with a new scoreboard in 2006. Several landscaping renovations have taken place at the facility as well. The AUM Baseball Complex serves as the home field for Senators baseball and features stadium seating, a grandstand, press box and concessions stand for the convenience of Senator baseball fans. The complex has served as host site for the NAIA Region XIII Tournament in 2006 as well as the 2007 SSAC Baseball tournament.

In addition to its turnkey position in governmental affairs, Montgomery holds a unique position in concerns of military training, technology, defense and education as the location of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Gunter is the location of the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG), which provides technical and customer service support as well as acquisition and program management oversight of over 160 Combat Support Information Technology (IT) systems. The ELSG also manages the Air Force standard desktop environment, and serves as the USAF lead for software program management under the auspices of the Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative. The city’s role as a regional trade center is firmly established, serving as a wholesaling and distribution gateway to the Southeast in addition to the 22-county central Alabama

area. In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyundai would locate its first United States automobile manufacturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-squarefoot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyundai’s first North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physicians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers and more. Additionally, there are many walk-in clinics that offer general medicine and private practice physician offices with services ranging from family practice to internal medicine and ophthalmology. Montgomery and surrounding area veterans also are served by the VA Medical Center. Things to See and Do Montgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activities for people of all ages and interests. The city has been dubbed the “birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights.” It was the first capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the telegram was sent that started battle in the War Between the States. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. The City of Montgomery this important event that shaped the destiny of a nation, along with its Children’s Annex, which provides a background on segregation through an interactive “time machine” exhibit. Visitors also should stop at the Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by famed architect Maya Lin. The center, operated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-theart exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities and a section dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgomery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from five different continents, including a brand new African elephant exhibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Alabama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of information. Children will be especially delighted by the archives’ “Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, costumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattlemen’s Association “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cowboy culture and livestock production. Shopping is also a popular pastime. Montgomery has unique boutiques tucked away into historic districts like Old Cloverdale and the Mulberry District, as well as first-class shopping malls
and centers. Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at EastChase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants. And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim. Sports and Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Baseball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 million baseball stadium opened
Downtown Amphitheatre
in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riverfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department operates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such activities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fitness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and college baseball games. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The trail is recognized as one of the finest golf experiences anywhere.
