Warhawks Basketball
2011 OUTLOOK Entering his 35th season at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Larry Chapman is as excited about this year’s team as any he has coached. Coming off an 8-18 season, the Warhawks have a lot to prove, but key pieces are in place to see immediate improvement. “We are a lot deeper and a much better basketball team than we were last year,” Chapman said of his 2011-12 squad. “We had several games that we should have won that we just did not execute down the stretch and ended up losing. I really feel much more positive about our basketball team than I did in the past.” This season’s team returns seven letterwinners and welcomes nine newcomers to AUM’s campus. In their returners, the Warhawks bring back nearly 56 percent of their scoring, 57 percent of their rebounds and better than 58 percent of their minutes played. Despite the loss of two-time all-conference performer Charles Perona and a proven starter in Johnny Williams, the Warhawks return sophomore Marquez Brooks to anchor the backcourt. Brooks, who was a Southern States Athletic Conference All-Freshman team selection last season, averaged 7.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game during his freshman campaign and proved he was both a capable scorer and floor leader at the college level. Senior Michael Lee, as well as newcomers Michael Willis, Cameron Pridemore, Darren McDaniel, Justin Zachary, Justin Trotter, Justin Eidmoe and Hunter Anderson will also contribute at the guard position. “Charles was an all-conference performer and Johnny was a starter, so those two are tough to replace,” Chapman said. “We have Marquez coming back, who I think has all the

that is not a bad problem to have.” BACKCOURT Returning just two guards from last season’s team, the Warhawks will rely heavily on Brooks and Lee to provide minutes and leadership at the position. “Marquez is a much-improved player for our team this year,” Chapman said. “He has matured, both on and off the court, and has the potential to be a very special player in our conference. He had a very good freshman season for us last year and we are expecting even more out of him this season.” “No player that we have ever had plays harder and has more of a commitment to our program than Michael,” Chapman said of Lee. “He had a good year last season and I think that is going to carry over this year. He runs the floor well and competes on both ends.”
Sophomore Marquez Brooks
tools to be a very special player, as well as Cameron and Darren, who have a great understanding of the game. I think Justin Zachary should be one of those borderline starters, but we will have to wait and see. We have some options like moving Michael Willis to one of the guard spots, but a lot will be determined by how quickly these newcomers come in and grasp our system.” Senior Stephen Jordan will provide the Warhawks with a valid option in the paint, having earned SSAC All-Division honors as a junior and 6th Man of the Year accolades as a sophomore. Jordan averaged 10 points per game and nearly nine rebounds per contest during his junior season and will be expected to produce in the same fashion this year. Joining Jordan up front are returners Alex Hergott, A.J. Ansley and Caz Cole, as well as Da’Keidres (Dak) Wade and Michael Acoff. Also in the mix is Trey Geter, who missed last season with a knee injury, and suffered a setback early in the preseason. “Stephen Jordan will anchor our frontcourt, but we have several other players who we are expecting significant contributions from,” Chapman said. “I think the experience that Alex, A.J. and Caz gained last year will really prove to be an attribute to our team. If you add their year of maturity to the additions of Michael Acoff and Dak, we have quite a few more options in the paint than we did last season. And
Senior Michael Lee
Joining the returning players is a talented group of newcomers, several of which Chapman feels will provide immediate results. Willis is a freshman who did not play basketball last year while attending Auburn, but has a strong understanding of the game and will look to fill one of the five starting spots. “Michael played for a great high school coach in Frank Tolbert,” Chapman said. “Even in his first year in our program, he has already started to show his value. He makes shots from the outside and is a good rebounder of the basketball. He has a great aptitude for the game and has such a smooth flow when he plays the game. I think he can have a very good career for us at AUM.” Pridemore is in a similar situation, having signed with SSAC foe Lee University out of high school. After taking a year off to help coach
Warhawks Basketball his high school alma mater, Pridemore is also projected to compete for a starting spot in the backcourt. “Cameron signed with Lee University out of high school, but spent last season coaching at his high school,” Chapman said. “He has such a sweet shot and a great basketball IQ. He loves the game and his passion shows through in every practice. Right now, he is one of the primary guards on our team, but I will be interested to see how he responds to the speed of the college game.” Also factoring into the equation are Zachary and McDaniel. Zachary joins the Warhawks following a highly-decorated prep career at Sonoraville High School in Calhoun, Ga., while McDaniel was a key contributor for the past two seasons at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Ala. “Justin is a very talented player, who we are counting on to play quality minutes this year,” Chapman said. “We know he is going to struggle a little bit as he adjusts to the speed of the college game, but has the ability to be a good player in our league.” “Darren has a lot to offer our program,” Chapman added. “He is a physical player, a solid defender and a quality shooter. He needs to improve on his ball-handling skills, but he is working hard to do that and will certainly factor into the mix for playing time this year.” Adding to the depth at the position are Anderson, Trotter and Eidmoe. “Hunter is a young man that had a great high school career, but will use this year to learn and get stronger,” Chapman said. “He was a three-sport athlete in high school, and probably wasn’t able to focus as much on basketball because of playing other sports. He shoots the ball well, so if he continues to work hard, I can see him contributing to our program in the future.” “Justin (Trotter) is a walk-on guard with a tremendous attitude and an eagerness for the game,” Chapman continued. “He will need to continue to improve, but with his work ethic, I can see him contributing to our program in time.” “Justin works as hard as any player we have,” Chapman said of Eidmoe. “His love for the game and desire to get better will serve him, and our team, well.” FRONTCOURT The AUM frontcourt has a nice blend of talented returners and promising newcomers. Jordan is the most powerful option inside, coming off a junior campaign that was highlighted by an 18-point, 20-rebound effort against TruettMcConnell. “Stephen has been a major player in our
2011 OUTLOOK program for the past three years and I expect the same this year,” Chapman said. “He is a tenacious competitor and seems to have become more involved in the game this preseason. He is a capable scorer on the offensive end and is aggressive on the defensive end. He is a cornerstone of our program, who is excited about playing his senior season, so I am looking forward to seeing what this year brings for him.”
Senior Alex Hergott
Joining Jordan in the post is Hergott, who averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest in his first season. Hergott began his AUM career with a season-high 20 points against Life University in the season opener and remained a presence on the court for the duration of the season. “Alex has gotten stronger this season and that should serve him well,” Chapman said. “He made a great contribution last year and I shudder to think how we would have finished if we didn’t have him. He worked hard this summer and has been impressive early this fall, so we are expecting big things of him this year.” Also returning are Ansley and Cole, both sophomores this season. Ansley, a member of the SSAC All-Freshman team last year, scored 6.9 points and pulled down 3.0 rebounds per game in 26 contests, while Chapman is pleased with the improvement Cole has shown and expects him to be a significant contributor to the team. “A.J. is a guy who has come a long way, but still has room
for improvement,” Chapman said. “He needs to rebound the ball better and get his shot more stable. But with that being said, he is very strong and athletic and will be a major player on our team this year.” “I think Caz has made a turn,” Chapman added. “This preseason he has shown a great maturity, but has to continue to get stronger. He is very athletic and seems to be more comfortable with things, so I expect him to contribute to our team in a much larger way this season.” A one-year player, who transferred to AUM from Tuskegee University, Acoff will also provide a powerful presence in the middle on both ends of the court. “Michael is a brute in the paint and you have to have that in basketball,” Chapman said. “He is very physical and has improved significantly since his arrival on campus. He works hard and is going to be a great addition to our team.” A true freshman, Wade joins the Warhawks from Cairo High School in Cairo, Ga., where he enjoyed a standout prep career. “Dak is everything you want in a player,” Chapman said. “He has great length, great athletic ability, is engaged well with the game and works hard on both ends of the court. He is a good shooter and runs the floor well. He has to get better at working with his back to the basket, but Dak is a guy we are counting on to play a lot this year.” The wildcard in the frontcourt, and likely the entire team, is Geter, whose health continues to impact his potential. “Trey came to AUM as a potential impact player for our program and has been battling injuries since the second week of practice last year,” Chapman said. “He spent last year recovering from a knee injury and suffered another injury early this preseason. If he can get healthy and improve his leg strength, his length and athleticism will be a great addition to our team.”

HEAD COACH LARRY CHAPMAN
Larry Chapman Head Coach 35th Season at AUM (650-396) 38th Overall (685-441) Auburn University, 1964
Larry Chapman is, and always will be, the name associated with Auburn University at Montgomery men’s basketball. Only the second head coach in the program’s history, Chapman is currently in his 35th season with the Warhawks’ men’s basketball team. Chapman took the helm in 1977 and, 650 wins later, is continuing to add to his legacy. In 1977, Dr. Hanly Funderburk, AUM’s first chancellor, offered Chapman the opportunity to lead its third-year men’s program. In just his second season, the team posted a 20-win season, a feat duplicated by his third-year team. From the 1981-82 season through the 1988-89 season, AUM averaged over 25 wins a season and became the first school in 17 years to win three straight championships in the highly competitive NAIA District 27. His 1987-88 team set the benchmark for teams of the future, as his squad finished 32-3 and made an incredible run through the tournament field to reach the championship game. AUM, led by NAIA Player of the Year Orlando Graham, faced Grand Canyon College in the title game, falling in overtime on a last-second shot. Chapman was named the NAIA’s Coach of the Year following the season. During his tenure as head coach, AUM has made 11 NAIA National Tournament appearances. In addition to appearing in the championship game in 1988, he has also coached two teams to the tournament’s quarterfinals and three into the second round.

With Chapman at the helm, AUM has won championships in the Southern States Athletic Conference, the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference, the Southeast Independent Region and NAIA District 27. In addition to team success, 17 players have earned All-America honors under Chapman’s leadership, including Joseph Manuel, who

was a two-time second-team and two-time honorable mention AllAmerican during his four years. Most recently, team chaplain Nathan Thomas garnered honorable mention All-American honors during the 2009-10 season. Also under his guidance, two former Warhawks have gone on to play in the National Basketball Association, as Graham and Etdrick Bohannon each played several seasons in the league that is the benchmark for professional basketball. Along with his success on the court, Chapman doubled as the athletic director at AUM until 1999. From the athletic director position, Chapman was instrumental in AUM’s move from the Independent Region to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference, now known as the Southern States Athletic Conference. When Chapman came to AUM, only men’s basketball and men’s tennis were played. He pushed for the addition of six sports now being offered on campus along with men’s basketball. Chapman’s credentials are unmatched, boasting a history of success at every stop in his basketball career. As a player at Ludowici (Ga.) High School, he was a two-time All-State selection and twice led his team to the state championship tournament. Following his prep career, Chapman enrolled at Auburn University, where he was a three-year starter for legendary coach Joel Eaves. He was named to the All-Southeastern Conference sophomore team and was selected a team captain as a senior. He was the first player in Auburn University basketball history to start every game in a four-year career. After graduating from Auburn, Chapman stayed on campus and began his coaching career as the head coach of Auburn University’s freshman team. In six seasons, he recorded a 77-39 record, including an 18-1 mark in the 1965-66 season. From Auburn’s freshman team, Chapman moved on to Auburn High School, where he had consecutive 21-win seasons in 1972-73 and 1973-74. BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEEL With programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Montgomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a five-minute walk on campus. FOUR-DAY WEEKS At Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also find AUM can accommodate just about any schedule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly. CUTTING-EDGE PROGRAMS Auburn Montgomery’s Storage Area Network Center of Excellence teaches information technology students to manage networks that store vast quantities of digital data. One of only six such centers in the country, it has been extremely successful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with companies like Unisys. ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Warhawks’ athletic teams have a championship reputation in NAIA Division I and Southern States Athletic Conferences sports. Our men’s tennis team is the reigning national champion, while women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball have put forth standout performances in the past as well.
THE NEW WELLNESS CENTER The 73,500-square-foot Wellness Center will be a facility that will give students more options for recreation, more space for club meetings, and a place for them to hang out when they are not in class. The center will house several wellness and fitness amenities, including: a pool, healthy snack bar, weight room, aerobics room, running track, basketball courts and a rock climbing wall. The center is funded largely through the student activities fee. Additional funds for building and operating the center will be provided by the university, private donations, and memberships sold to AUM employees and alumni. Construction began February 2011, and the Wellness Center is slated to open Fall 2012.
RECOGNIZED EXCELLENCE Auburn Montgomery is the consistent top choice of readers of the Montgomery Advertiser, who have named AUM the best local college for the past several years. ATHLETICS DIRECTOR STEVE CROTZ
Steve Crotz Athletic Director Missouri, 1979 Steve Crotz is currently in his fourth year as full-time athletic director at Auburn Montgomery, after sserving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs have been established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been stalwarts in the community and excelled in the classroom. i Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 C Coaches’ Polls and teams have won three national championships. In addition, 121 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 47 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its first meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 99 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 32 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 500 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

THE NAIA AND SSAC
The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the Southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black; a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski; a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey; and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the GeorgiaAlabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.
