2011 OUTLOOK Optimism is high surrounding the 2011 Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team, as the Warhawks look to bounce back from a disappointing 2010 campaign and return to regional and national prominence within the NAIA. “I think we can all agree that last season was very disappointing in terms of wins and losses and not qualifying for postseason play,” head coach Wulf Koch said. ”We found out last year what we were lacking in player personnel and what we need to get back to where we want to be. I think we addressed that well and improved our depth at the same time.”

The 2011 squad returns 11 letterwinners, anchored by senior team captains Chris Ross and Kristjan Hannesson. “I think the most important thing that Chris and Kristjan bring to our team is intensity every game and every practice,” Koch said of the senior duo. “The also lead by example in terms of their fitness and they have a tremendous desire to win.” The Warhawks also return seniors Steve Keller in goal and Nik Chamberlain, who missed the last two seasons due to injury, as well as seven sophomores, five of which appeared in eight or more matches and six of which started a contest. The team also welcomes 11 newcomers to the program, all of which will compete for playing time. “Our strength is certainly a strength of our team,” Koch continued. “At nearly every position, we have two, and maybe even three, players that can contribute. The big question mark about this team is the youth. Last year we brought in 14 new guys and this year 11, so it will be interesting to see how quickly our team can mesh.” Keller is the lone goalkeeper returning with experience at AUM, but will be challenged immediately by sophomore Vignir Johannesson and junior transfer Bosko Kovacevic. Last season, Keller finished with 52 saves in 18 matches, but allowing 2.27 goals per game and enters the season battling a knee injury. Johannesson appears to have an edge for the starting spot, but Kovacevic, a transfer from Parkland College in Champaign, Ill., will also see action. Defensively, the Warhawks are paced by Ross and Hannesson, while sophomore Taian Souza has also drawn high praise from Koch. “Taian came in last year and wasn’t prepared for the competitiveness of college soccer,” Koch said. “He spent most of last season coming off the bench and was not in good playing shape. He rededicated himself during the spring and secured a starting spot for our team this fall.” The unit will also feature a trio of talented newcomers in Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson, Matias Aristegui and Dagur Jonsson. Eyjolfsson played 11 games last season at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., while Aristegui was an All-American at Darton College last year, “Eyjolfur came in really unfit, but really did a good job of getting into game shape,” Koch said. “He has had a great preseason and we are expecting him to contribute this season. Matias was an All-American in junior college and we hope that standard of play will carry over to our team. Dagur is another in the long line of Icelandic players to join our program and will compete for minutes.” At the midfield position, the Warhawks return three players in Chamberlain and sophomore Christian Holthaus and Philippe Silveira. Chamberlain, who is an experienced player with nearly 60 matches under his belt, and Holthaus appear to have an edge on starting posi-

4

Warhawks Soccer tions, but Silveira will compete for minutes after playing more than 340 last season. “It took Christian a little while to get going last season, but once he figured it out he proved he could play at this level,” Koch said. “He is so good in the midfield at moving the ball forward, but needs to continue to improve on being more physical. Nik is a guy who adds a wealth of experience to a young roster and will be solid for our team in any capacity he is used.” AUM added three newcomers at the midfield position, as freshman Elvar Sigurdson, Zack Chanthongphio and Cameron Fendley will compete for playing time, and potentially a starting spot, at the position. “I think Elvar is going to be an absolute gem for our program,” Koch said of the attacking midfielder. “He is one of the most polished players we have had in our program in quite some time. It may take him a few weeks to get accustomed to being a student-athlete, but I think he has all the tools to be a very nice player for us for four years. “Zach and Cameron are both nice players from here in Alabama, who understand how to play the game and will only get better. I expect each of them to see the field as freshman.” At the forward spot, four letterwinners return, while a fifth returns after missing last season with an injury. Sophomores Goffin Boyoko, Vitor Silva, Daniel Rodrigues, Joel Bonsafo Bawua and Cesar Kestring all return after combining to score 10 goals during their inaugural season with the Warhawks. Added to the five returners are junior Angel Gonzalez, sophomore Baron Watson, a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth University, and freshman Costa Whitehead, a local prep standout at Alabama Christian Academy. “I like the scoring ability of the players we have coming back,” Koch said. “Our sophomores are all battle tested and have worked hard this offseason to improve. I am really excited about the addition of Baron, who was at VCU last year, and can absolutely fly. Once he gets into game shape, he will really help our team. Angel is a guy who knows how to score and is not afraid to take shots, while Costa was a proven goalscorer at the prep level.” On a squad with only four members who have played more than two seasons with the Warhawks, the schedule is one that will provide no “freebies.” The schedule features six teams that qualified for the NAIA National Tournament and eight teams that finished the season ranked or among the others receiving votes in the final NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. “The schedule will really challenge us,” Koch said. “I feel like if we want to be a premier team, we have to play the top teams. We do not need games that we win 6-0. Those do not help us. Our non-conference schedule is also designed to prepare us for conference play. Every match in SSAC play is going to be a fight. Four teams from our conference made the NAIA Tournament last year and six were ranked at some point during the season. We are going to have to bring our best effort every match this year if we want to be successful.” Even with a young squad and a difficult schedule, the goal remains the same for the 2011 Warhawks. “I think our guys are fed up with not making the national tournament, so our goal is to qualify for the tournament,” Koch said. “Once you get into the tournament, anything can happen. I think we have to pieces in place to achieve that goal.”

THIS IS AUM

Warhawks Soccer is to foster and exemplify excellence in education through instruction, research, and service. Auburn University at Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contemporary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state, and region. AUM provides academic programs that are characteristic of the finest traditions of scholarship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of government, regional economic growth, and cultural enrichment through the arts.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association.

WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY? Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your college education. This year alone, Auburn University at Montgomery offered students more than $4 million in Pell Grants and another $20 million in student loans. Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford. A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 18:1 Our classes are kept small, giving you more personal attention and allowing your professors to get to know you.

BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEEL With programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Montgomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a five-minute walk on campus. MISSION STATEMENT Auburn University at Montgomery’s mission, as the metropolitan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution,

FOUR-DAY WEEKS At Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier

for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also find AUM can accommodate just about any schedule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly. CUTTING-EDGE PROGRAMS Auburn Montgomery’s Storage Area Network Center of Excellence teaches information technology students to manage networks that store vast quantities of digital data. One of only six such centers in the country, it has been extremely sucessful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with companies like Unisys. ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Warhawks’ athletic teams have a championship reputation in NAIA Division I and Southern States Athletic Conferences sports. Our men’s tennis team is the reigning national champion, while women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball have put forth standout performances in the past as well.

the student activities fee. Additional funds for building and operating the center will be provided by the university, private donations, and memberships sold to AUM employees and alumni. Construction began February 2011, and the Wellness Center is slated to open Fall 2012.

RECOGNIZED EXCELLENCE Auburn Montgomery is the consistent top choice of readers of the Montgomery Advertiser, who have named AUM the best local college for the last four years. THE NAIA AND SSAC

The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black, a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski, a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the GeorgiaAlabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s committment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 204 school’s recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 77 points on a 100-point scale, the 23rd-best total in the country.
