2012-13 OUTLOOK After several tough losses last season, Head Coach Dan Davis believes this year’s women’s basketball team has the depth to return AUM to its historical place near the top of the Southern States Athletic Conference. “We lost nine games by single digits last year,” Davis said. “A couple wins here and there and you could have been looking at a 20-win season. This year’s team is hungry. This is the first time that I’ve had a team where they all like to be in the gym. There are a lot of intangibles that I hadn’t necessarily seen in the past which I think could be a key to our success.” The Warhawks finished last season with a 14-16 record that was identical to their performance in 2010-11. A 7-11 conference record ranked them fifth in the SSAC west division, a one-spot improvement from the year before. With a six-player recruiting class which includes five guards, along with the return of senior captain Kamesha Strong, Davis expects a deeper backcourt to support a strong group of returning inside players. “This is the quickest team we’ve had on the perimeter since I’ve been here,” Davis said. “We definitely felt like our guard play needed to improve, and I feel like this year we’ve added more athletic ability to go along with some scoring potential.”

Returners Perhaps the most important returner on the inside, senior forward LaKenya Drayton ended last season with six double-doubles in the team’s last seven games. She led the team with 7.6 rebounds per game, and her 9.8 points per game were second best. Drayton was selected to the All-West Division team by the SSAC for her efforts. “Kenya was one of the top post players in the conference at the end of the season,” Davis said. “She was the only player to start every game, and she made huge strides as the year went on.” Drayton’s inside talents will complement the scoring ability of junior guard Keisha Moore, who joined Drayton on the all-west team after leading the team with 12.4 points per game. Moore came to AUM from D-I Tennessee Tech. “Keisha has come back with a commitment to being a great player on both ends of the floor,” Davis said. “She’s added a lot of muscle in the offseason, and she’s improved a lot overall. She has the ability to be one of the best defensive players in the league.” Moore and Drayton are joined by five other returners. Senior Caitlin Cunningham and sophomores Marren Schwartz and Tina Odume are back on the inside, while Strong and sophomore Jazmine Jackson return on the perimeter. Schwartz and Cunningham both saw

significant playing time in 2011-12, and this will likely remain the case this year. Schwartz earned a spot on the SSAC’s All-Freshman team after her first season. The 6-2 center ranked second on the team in rebounds and blocks, while also continuing to develop offensively. “Marren’s got the potential to have a very special career,” Davis said. “She is truly dedicated to being a big-time player. She’s gotten stronger, and has also developed a mid-range shot. A lot of teams will have trouble trying to matchup against her and Kenya.” Cunningham joins Strong and Drayton to make up the three team captains for 2012-13. She appeared in all 30 games last year for the Warhawks, making 12 starts and averaging 4.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. “Caitie will provide a lot of experience for us,” Davis said. “She just brings a lot of little intangibles to the table, and she’s been huge from a leadership standpoint as our practices have gotten under way.” Odume saw limited action in her freshman season, but Davis is excited about the progress made by the 6-2 center during the offseason. “Tina Odume might be our most improved player,” he said. “She has really come back stronger. If she continues to work hard in practice, she should see an increased role this year. She has a ton of potential.” Among the returning guards, Davis

is thrilled to have Strong back after the vocal 5-3 floor leader missed the last 23 games due to an injury. In her limited action, Strong had the best assist-toturnover ratio on the team while playing from the point guard position. “It’s huge to get Kamesha back,” Davis said. “You cannot value what she means to our program based on stats. She’s the heart of the team, and she is relentless in her competitiveness. She plays hard on every possession, and she takes care of the ball. It’s like having an extra coach out on the floor.” Jackson appeared in 23 games last season in a reserve guard role, and she is expected to fight for playing time again this season. “Jaz stepped in nicely as a backup point guard for us last season,” Davis said. “She’s come into this year in good shape, despite having to deal with an offseason injury. I expect her to be a steady point guard option for us.” Newcomers Davis focused his recruiting efforts on improving depth at the guard positions. He also valued experience in his recruits, with all six newcomers having played at the junior college level. “We felt like we needed recruits that had already been seasoned,” Davis said. “They’ve all had success at either the Juco or high school level. They’ve been in winning environments, and as a result they will bring a winning attitude to AUM, which we felt was very important.” Ashley Rush, Katie Williams, Psachal Maize, Amber Bennett and walk-on Antonise Harper will compete for playing time at the guard position, while Chelsea Haggermaker is the lone inside recruit. Rush played at West Florida last season, averaging 10.3 points per game with a 2.55:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in the eight games she appeared in. Prior to her time with the Argonauts, the 5-7 senior spent two seasons at Gulf Coast CC, where she was a member of the Commodores’ 2009-10 NJCAA National Championship team. “Ashley has looked really good in the early going,” Davis said. “She’s competing at the point guard spot to start, and she’ll also play some wing. She has a good shot, and can create off the dribble. She’s a very good basketball

player.” Williams will be a 3-point threat for the Warhawks, having shot over 40 percent from behind-the-arc during her two seasons at Snead State CC. She also shot 84 percent from the free throw line while averaging 9.5 points per game during her sophomore season at Snead. “Katie can really stroke it,” Davis said. “She will be a great outside threat for us to go along with Keisha.” Maize and Bennett were teammates at Shelton State CC, helping lead the Lady Bucs to a 33-4 record and the Alabama Community College Conference Championship during their sophomore seasons. Maize, who had the best assist-toturnover ratio on the team, earned allconference honors last season. “Psachal’s got a nice shot,” Davis said. “She’ll be somebody that can come in and knock down the open three. She’s got good playmaking ability.” Bennett averaged 5.5 points per game during her two seasons, and shot over 40 percent from the field during her sophomore season. “Amber is a blue-collar type of player,” Davis said. “She’ll get at you defensively, and rebound like crazy. On offense, she has a get-to-the-paint mentality. She’s that type of guard. “The new guards that we’ve brought in, they all bring some different things,” he added. “But as a group, they’ve

shown great maturity. They’re athletic, and they can shoot. They should really help our overall team balance this season.” Harper was a late addition to the team. She transferred to AUM after spending a year at Concordia College in Selma, where the Lady Hornets won the USCAA National Championship. “We don’t take walk-ons very often, but I think she’ll turn into a good pickup for us,” Davis said. “She brings a lot of athletic ability on the perimeter, and she has a nice pull-up jump shot.” Haggermaker earned all-conference honors in her lone season at Southern Union CC, averaging 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. The 6-0 sophomore forward is expected to provide depth on the inside during her first season. “Chelsea is a player that we think has the potential to keep developing as the year goes on,” Davis said. “She’s just got to keep learning how to play with her back to the basket.” Schedule/Expectations The Warhawks will play a lot of unfamiliar teams prior to conference play this year, with five matchups against firsttime opponents. “We’re playing some different teams, which I kind of like,” Davis said. “I think we’ll get to see some different styles of play. We’ll find out where we’re at early.” Only four of AUM’s first 16 games will be played at the AUM Gymnasium, though the Warhawks are participating in a two-game tournament at nearby Faulkner. Also included in the early schedule is a trip to Samford for an exhibition game against the D-I Bulldogs, who have made the NCAA Tournament in their last two seasons. Though no coach likes to put a specific number on what it would take to have a successful season, Davis believes that AUM has the potential to compete for the SSAC west division title. “Any coach would say that making the national tournament is a successful season,” Davis said. “You’ve got to have good players, and a little bit of luck. “I really like this team,” he continued. “We still have a long ways to go, but they’ve shown us some really good things so far. We have a lot to look forward to.”

HEAD COACH DAN DAVIS

Dan Davis Head Coach • Fifth Season AUM, 1999 Now starting his fifth season as the head coach of the women’s basketball program at Auburn Montgomery, Dan Davis has continued the team’s proud history of success on and off the court. In his four seasons as head coach, Davis has led the Warhawks to the NAIA Tournament and earned Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. During his time at the helm, Davis has also coached one All-American player, eight SSAC All-Conference performers and two SSAC All-Freshman team members while leading the team to an overall mark of 63-56. Last season, the team finished with its second straight 14-16 record, while moving up to a fifth place finish in the SSAC West Division. The season gave plenty of reasons for optimism this year, however, with newcomers Keisha Moore and LaKenya Drayton both earning spots on the SSAC All-West Division team and Marren Schwartz making the All-Freshman team. The team also continued its success in the classroom, finishing with a grade-point average over 3.0 for the fourth consecutive year. Four players earned spots on the SSAC All-Academic team. During the 2009-10 campaign, Davis guided AUM to a 15-15 record and a tie for fourth place in the SSAC standings. Highlighting the season was a 73-49 thrashing of perennial conference powerhouse, Lee University, which AUM had beaten only twice in program history. In addition, Cassie Moore became the 23rd AUM player to earn All-America status, earning honorable mention honors, while also being named the SSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season, Davis served as interim head women’s basketball coach and led the Warhawks to a NAIA National Tournament appearance and a 20-9 overall record. Under his leadership, AUM led the SSAC in scoring defense and 3-point field goal percentage, while ranking second in field goal percentage, defensive field goal percentage and defensive 3-point field goal percentage. Moore earned Third-Team AllAmerican honors, while the Warhawks finished the season ranked 25th in the nation. Along with success on the court, the Warhawks have also excelled in the classroom under Davis, as student-athletes have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans nine times. They have earned SSAC Academic All-Conference honors 19 times. The women’s basketball program has also had the AUM Female Honor Student-Athlete during three of his four seasons and has posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better during seven of eight semesters under Davis. Davis also spent one season as the Warhawks’ assistant coach under current Athletic Director Steve Crotz. As the assistant coach, Davis served as the recruiting coordinator and provided assistance in all areas of individual and team development. Prior to joining AUM, Davis spent five years at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Ga., as the head coach of the girls’ basketball team from 2002-07. During his time with PCA, Davis coached seven all-county and all-region performers, two all-state players and one region player of the year. He helped the Stars to a 65-63 overall record during his tenure, while also serving as the school’s athletic director from 2005-07. Davis has also made coaching stops at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ junior varsity basketball team and Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ basketball varsity squad. Along with his coaching duties, Davis serves as AUM’s Champions of Character coordinator. He is also very involved in the community, as well as professional organizations, including the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, YMCA, American Red Cross and Christ Community Church. He has directed numerous youth camps and has been on staff at camps hosted by the University of Tennessee, University of Georgia and Florida State University. In 2012, Davis became the SSAC Conference Chair for women’s basketball. Before joining the coaching ranks, Davis was a four-year member of the AUM men’s basketball team, playing for legendary Warhawks’ Head Coach Larry Chapman. During his AUM career, the Senators played in the NAIA National Tournament, won the NAIA Southeast Region and were the Southern States Conference Champions. Davis graduated from AUM in 1999 with a degree in secondary education and social sciences. Davis is married to the former Christi Shirley. The couple has two children, Abigail (7) and Cooper (4).

Haley McIntyre Rosa Assistant Coach • First Season AUM, 2010 Following a standout playing career, and after working as a graduate assistant for one season, Haley McIntyre Rosa will now be the full-time assistant coach for the AUM women’s basketball program in 2012-13. During her playing career, Rosa battled through a pair of knee injuries and scored 1,109 points, a total which ranks No. 11 all-time in school annals, while also pulling down 499 rebounds. She appeared in 119 career games, scoring in double figures 55 times. Rosa was an all-conference performer as a junior and earned SSAC All-Freshman honors in her first season. She was also a three-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and member of the conference All-Academic team. Rosa came to AUM following a highly-decorated prep career at Meadowview Christian School in Selma, Ala., where she was the Alabama Independent School Association Player of the Year as a senior and the Trojans’ Most Valuable Player all four years. She also lettered in softball and track and field at MCS. Rosa is a 2010 graduate of AUM with a degree in physical education. She also received a master’s in business administration from the school in 2012. The daughter of Bryan and Lisa McIntyre, she married Anthony Rosa in October, 2012.

Student Assistant First Season

After a two-year playing career at AUM, Areial Woods joins the coaching staff as a student assistant in 2012-13. Woods appeared in all 30 games last season, making 23 starts. She was the team’s most consistent guard in terms of field goal percentage, shooting almost 40 percent from the floor. Woods also led the team with 68 assists while averaging 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Prior to AUM, Woods spent two seasons at Shelton State CC, where she helped lead the Lady Bucs to consecutive Alabama Community College and Conference and Region XXII championships. Originally from Aliceville, Ala., Woods is working on completing a degree in physical education.

Student Manager S First Season

Nykeia Person is beginning her first season as the team manager for the women’s basketball team. A freshman at AUM, Person graduated from Luverne High School in Alabama, where she was a three-year letterwinner in basketball for the Tigers. Person is majoring in business. The daughter of Wesley and Lillian Person, she has two brothers, Wesley Jr. and Westley, and one sister, Aleyah.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY A broad-based academic institution, Auburn University at Montgomery is organized into five schools - Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences. The genesis of the institution came after a request from the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degreegranting institution. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 and the first classes were offered in 1969. Originally housed in several buildings downtown, 500 acres in east Montgomery were purchased in 1971 so the campus could move to a location where it could grow. In 1973, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an operationally separate institution. The Auburn University Board of Trustees maintains responsibility for governance of AUM.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Warhawks athletic teams have a championship reputation in NAIA Division I and Southern States Athletic Conference sports. Our men’s and women’s tennis teams have won 21 national championships. Men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball have competitive histories as well, and our new men’s and women’s cross country teams are building one.

CHANCELLOR DR. JOHN G. VERES III

DR. JOHN G. VERES III University Chancellor Seventh Year Auburn University at Montgomery, 1976

Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology in 1976 and 1978, and he has worked for over 30 years with the university. Veres has been serving as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006. “I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor” says Veres. For six years prior to becoming chancellor, Veres was executive director of AUM’s University Outreach, which conducts applied research and provides consulting services, including economic forecasting, equal employment opportunity and public policy formation. The division’s Center for Advanced Technologies, Center for Business and Economic Development, Center for Demographic Research and Center for Government and Public Affairs manage annually more than $9 million in contracts.

book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organizations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure validity and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as special master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. He has long been involved in community affairs. Long involved in community affairs, Veres currently serves on the boards of directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, the Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery and the River Region United Way. Veres was also the inaugural

Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR STEVE CROTZ

STEVE CROTZ Athletics Director Seventh Year Missouri, 1979

Steve Crotz is currently in his fifth year as Athletics Director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won four national championships. In addition, 158 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 70 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its first meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage.

In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 135 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 45 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 750 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runnerup finish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball

coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girl’s basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

THE NAIA AND SSAC The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Wojciechowski, Sports Information Director Tyler Hyde, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 26 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 36 years, AUM has claimed 21 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 school’s recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.

Just as important as success on the court and in the classroom, giving back to the community has always been a key philosophy of the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team. The success on the court is evident. Beginning its 25th year of existence, AUM has made 18 NAIA National Tournament appearances, won 70 percent of its games and had 23 All-American selections. In the classroom, the Warhawks consistently finish semesters with a team cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0. During the 2012 spring semester, the women’s basketball team had 10 players earn a 3.0 GPA, including five with a GPA over 3.5. AUM had four student-athletes named to the 2011-12 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. The women’s basketball team has also earned three of the four AUM Female Honor Student-Athlete awards, sponsored by the SSAC. But the component of the Warhawks’ philosophy that is often overlooked is the way the team gives back. During the past year, the women’s basketball program has participated in a variety of events in the community, benefitting citizens of all ages. One of the most popular events the Warhawks participate in is the annual Make a Difference Day. During the event, players and coaches interact with local youth, reading books and doing various activities with children at the Molina Learning Center in Montgomery. Along with reading to the children, members of the team also help the center’s students pick out books for their own personal library. The team works with AUM professor Dr. Nancy Anderson on the project. Another is the Angels for the Elderly project, through which the team spends time with the elderly most Fridays throughout the year. During a two-hour visit, members of the team enjoy doing activities with members, including reading, playing dominos, making arts and crafts and singing. The team also held a one-day clinic for members of the Prattville YMCA, at which they taught basketball fundamentals and life skills to more than 40 local youth. During the holiday season, the Warhawks were active in the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. They also participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Molina Learning Center, where members of the team made readings of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech for students and helped clean the grounds of the complex. The team also spent a day reading to students at Blount Elementary School and the First United Methodist Church’s Early Childhood Development Center. Recently, members of the team helped AUM students move into the residence halls and spearheaded the AUM blood drive as part of its partnership with the NAIA Leadership Program. The women’s team also sponsored the 13th annual Warhawk Challenge in mid-October. The event consists of a 5K race and a one-mile fun race, with all proceeds benefiting the women’s basketball program.
