2012 OUTLOOK Coming off a 42-19 season and a return to the NAIA National Tournament, the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team is poised to prove last season was a not a fluke, but the norm. The 2012 Warhawks return eight starters from last season’s squad and 15 seniors. AUM also returns seven pitchers, including Southern States Athletic Conference All-West Division performer Cody Hall and senior Wes Cook, both of whom won eight games last season. Pacing the offense is senior Hunter Cross, who hit .382, with three home runs and a team-high 50 runs batted in last year. Also returning are seniors Rusty Todd, Logan Remson, Drew Walker, Jorden Johnson, Brian Wheeler, Chezz McCann and Michael Dugan, all of which hit better than .300 last season. “One of the unique things about our team last year was that we didn’t have just one big hitter,” Associate Head Coach Marty Lovrich said. “We had several guys that had really nice seasons, but could rely on anyone in our lineup to get a big hit when we needed it. We really think we have the pieces in place to have a special season, but we will need that same balance throughout the lineup.”

Judah, who shut the door on 11 games last season. ”Kyle will probably be the toughest guy to replace from last year’s team,” Lovrich said. “He was an iron man on Friday nights and that was a key to our success. He was a bulldog on the mound and went deep into games and that really helped set up the remainder of the series. Losing Sam will also hurt because he was so versatile. He was a force at the plate and then stepped in to close the back end of countless games last season.” In addition to Hall and Cook, AUM also returns several arms that will factor into the bullpen. Forrest Holifield, Will Ruffin and Nathan Brown are expected to work in a long-relief role, while Daniel Selph is a situational left-hander. Tyler Dent also returns and could potentially close games for the Warhawks. AUM also added eight newcomers to the staff, including a trio of Division I transfer pitchers in Michael Carden and Cory McGinnis from the University of South Alabama and Andrew Morris from Auburn University. Jordan Reid returns to the AUM campus after spending the past two seasons at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Ala., while Blake Woo, Eran Franks, Chris Barrentine and Daniel Farrar all begin their first season with the Warhawks. “The leadership of our team is very evident,” Lovrich said. “We have a team full of good-clubhouse guys, who push each other. We feel like we have the pieces in place to have a better start to the season, unlike last year where we struggled through February. If we can play the way we did during the middle of last year, we will have a great season.”

The Catchers

Senior First Baseman Logan Remson The infield returns starters at all four positions, as well as both of the Warhawks starting catchers. Remson returns and will be the incumbent at first base, while Johnson is back for his third season with the program and is penciled in as the starter at second base. On the left side, Cross returns following his standout first season with the Warhawks, while McCann and Branden Kelley are both sure-handed at the shortstop position and can handle the bat. Behind the plate, both Dugan and Walker return and are expected to split time at the position. Adding to the depth of the infield are newcomers Wes Hughes and Dustin Moon, as well as redshirt freshman Bryan Young and junior Adam Russell. Russell will likely be in the everyday lineup as the team’s designated hitter. The outfield returns two starters in Todd and Wheeler, and welcomes four fresh faces to the rotation. Junior College transfers Carson Amick and Shane Turner will factor into the immediate starting mix, while Anthony Durant could also see action, despite suffering an injury early in the fall. Sam Duffield, a redshirt last season, will also see action. On the mound, Hall and Cook will be expected to lead the staff following the departure of All-SSAC performer Kyle Mitchell. The staff also lost closer Sam

The Warhawks have a true luxury at the catcher position, as they return not only a three-year starter in Dugan, but also Walker, a 27-game starter last season. Dugan returns after hitting .301 with 14 runs batted in last season. He also committed just one error in 291 chances, good for a fielding percentage of .997. The Montgomery native will be one of the Warhawks’ Team Captains entering the season. Walker finished tied for the team lead with four home runs, while driving in 20 runs. Also sure-handed defensively, Walker committed just one miscue in 144 chances behind the plate. “We are very fortunate to have two very capable

catchers coming back in Michael and Drew,” Lovrich said. “They will likely rotate games, but we think we could put either one in the lineup and not skip a beat. Michael probably has a little bit of an advantage having been around longer, but both guys are good pitch callers, quality receivers and have strong bats.”

The Infield Last season, the Warhawks were looking for three starters on the infield. In 2012, AUM returns five players who started games within the infield and have added depth to each position. Following a strong inaugural campaign in which he hit .359 with a pair of home runs and 29 RBIs, Remson returns as the starter at first base. The Albertville, Ala., native was also solid defensively, where he committed just six errors in 56 games. “Logan will be our starting first baseman this season,” Lovrich said of Remson. “He is not going to hit a ton of home runs, but he does everything that you ask him to do and we love that. If we need to hit and run, he can execute it. If we need a bunt, he will get it down. Probably the thing we like best about him though is that he might have a bad day or two, but he doesn’t go into slumps at the plate. His approach to hitting is the same every day. When he shows up, you know what you are going to get.” Newcomers Russell and Young will also compete for time at the position. Russell, who redshirted last season at the University of West Alabama, will likely be penciled in as the team’s designated hitter, but could also see time at first base to give Remson a day off. After redshirting at AUM last year, Young has spent a year in the system and also provides the flexibility of playing in the outfield. “Adam will also factor into the mix at first base, but will likely be our designated hitter on most days because of his big bat,” Lovrich said. “Bryan Young could see be action at first, but can play in the outfield as well. He redshirted last season, so he has a year in our system under his belt, which is never a bad thing.” At second, Johnson returns after starting parts of the past two seasons at the position. Johnson started 33 games last season for the Warhawks, answering with a .341 batting average, 16 runs batted in and 30 runs scored. He also stole six bases and tied for the team-lead in walks. “Jorden had as good a fall as anyone on our team,” Lovrich said of Johnson. “He is a good defensive player and has good pop in his bat. He is that gritty, hard-nosed player that every team needs.” Backing up Johnson will likely be Moon, who joins the program following a standout two-year career at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Ala. Hughes is also capable of playing second base. “Dustin reminds me a lot of Jorden, and will see some action at second base” Lovrich added. “He has a good bat and a strong arm and will be able to help our team.” The Warhawks return depth at the shortstop position, as both McCann and Kelley are fully capable of starting. McCann will likely enter camp as the starter after posting a .316 batting average and scoring 29 runs last season. Kelley will compete for the starting nod, as he started 17 games last year. “If you want to compete for championships you have to be good up the middle, and with Chezz and Branden, we feel like we a pretty solid,” Lovrich said of the shortstop position. “The both had good years for us last year and we expect a lot of the same from them in 2012.” Cross has a lock on the third base spot, and provides stability for the Warhawks both defensively,

2012 OUTLOOK Amick transferred in from Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. “Shane is a hard-nosed kid, who plays as hard as he can every day,” Lovrich said. “He comes from LBW Community College, a program where that is demanded. He is a very capable outfielder and really took advantage of the opportunity he was given to contribute. He will play a lot for us this year.” “I think Carson is a little better player than we thought when we signed him,” Lovrich added of Amick. “He had 36 stolen bases last season in junior college and has a very capable bat. We are expecting good things out of him this year.” The wildcard in the outfield could be Durant, who was injured early in spring camp. However, Lovrich praised the Lawson State Community College transfer’s skill set and feels like he could certainly be an asset throughout the season in some capacity. “Durant probably has more tools than anyone on our team,” Lovrich said. “Unfortunately, he suffered an injury early this spring and we are not sure what he will be able to do this season.” Young and Duffield will provide depth throughout the outfield.

and perhaps more importantly, offensively. “Hunter is the catalyst for our offense,” Lovrich said. “He is a lot like Remson in that he doesn’t have many bad days in a row. We would like to see a little more power out of him, but we are certainly not trying to change anything. If we are going to have a good year, we feel like Hunter has to have a good year.” Hughes, a former standout at Calhoun Community College, will also see action at third base on days Cross might DH or late in games as a defensive substitution. “Wes probably was our biggest surprise of the fall,” Lovrich said. “He really fell into out lap after transferring from Calhoun Community College and will certainly help our team. He is an excellent defender with a strong, accurate arm. He will likely be a key defender for us late in games.”

Despite the loss of their Friday-night conference starter (Mitchell) and their All-West Division closer (Judah), the pitching staff is arguably the deepest unit of the field for the Warhwks. Hall and Cook will anchor the front-end of the rotation, both of which made key contributions to the success of the team last year. In 16 appearances, Hall posted an 8-3 record with a 2.90 earned run average, while leading the team in strikeouts and complete games. Cook, who also won eight games and posted a sub-4.00 ERA, added four complete games and ranked second in strikeouts with 77 in 80.0 innings. “We are very fortunate to have Cody and Wes back,” Lovrich said of the two eight-game winners in 2011. “Last season they were weekend guys for us and I do not anticipate their role changing this season.” Four newcomers will compete for the remaining starts, as Morris, McGinnis, Reid and Woo will audition for the final conference staring spot. The Outfield Much like the infield, the Warhawks return a significant amount of depth in the outfield. “The outfield is a unique situation for us this year,” Lovrich said. “We have two returning starters in Wheeler and Todd, as well as two newcomers, Carson Amick and Shane Turner, to compete for time. The first couple weeks of the season will really be an audition to see where everyone fits into the mix.” Back for AUM is Todd and Wheeler, who between them started a combined 105 games last season. Each hit better than .300 for the year, with Todd leading the team at .391. The duo also combined for 67 RBIs, 76 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. Both are penciled in as starters, but will be pushed. “Rusty is one of the hardest workers I have ever been around,” Lovrich said. “He is usually the first to arrive and the last to leave. He is a very coachable player, who does nearly everything well. He is a softspoken person, but is respected by everyone on the team. We need him to continue to be a key contributor for our team.” “Brian will likely hit in the middle of our lineup and play centerfield for our club,” Lovrich said of Wheeler. “He has had a year to adjust to his role and we are expecting huge things from him this year.” Competing for the remaining spot are Turner and Amick, both transfers. Turner joins the Warhawks from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, while

son at Auburn University. However, Morris established himself as one of the region’s top arms at the junior college level. “Andrew was the Florida Junior College Pitcher of the Year two years ago and broke nearly all of Coach Lowe’s pitching records at Gulf Coast Community College,” Lovrich said of Morris. “He is a hard thrower that shows a lot of grit on the mound. He has the ability to pitch deep into games and is a winner. He is absolutely the hardest worker on our team.” McGinnis is also a NCAA Division I transfer, after pitching for the University of South Alabama last season. Prior to joining the Jaguars, the Allison Park, Penn., native, was selected in the 44th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. “Cory has a power arm, but has to become more consistent,” Lovrich said. “He has all the tools to be a top of the rotation guy and will certainly help our team.” Woo, a transfer from Jefferson State CC, makes his living by locating his pitches. In 30 career appearances and 131.0 innings pitched, Woo walked just 51, while striking out 73. “Blake is a left-handed pitcher that hits his spots,” Lovrich said of Woo. “He moves the ball around and is a winner.” Returning to campus for the second time during his career, Reid spent the past two seasons pitching at Wallace Community Colllege in Dothan, Ala., where he played for former Major Leaguer Mackie Sasser. “We really like Jordan and think he will be a great addition to our pitching staff,” Lovrich said of Reid. “He has a lot of movement on his pitches and a power arm.” AUM has several options to throw a longer session, should a starter run into trouble. “Will Ruffin, Forrest Holifield, Nathan Brown and Eran Franks will all come out of the bullpen and have the ability to pitch more than one inning,” Lovrich said of the bullpen. “We feel good about sending any of these guys to the mound.” The Warhawks also have a pair of lefties in Selph and Barrentine, both of which could throw a multiple days in a row. “Daniel is now in a more comfortable role and I think he will be more of a contributor for us,” Lovrich said of Selph. “He just wants to do something positive to help our team and it seems like he is responding well.” “Chris is a grinder and will prove to be very valuable this season,” Lovrich said of the newcomer. “He is a quality arm that will allow us the flexibility of matching up against our opponents’ lineup. He also has a rubber arm, so he can throw a couple days straight for us.” The closer position will be a two-dog race between Dent and Carden. Dent returns after saving three games making a team-best 21 appearances. In his first season with the program, Dent posted a 2.97 earned run average and a 3-1 record. “Tyler was a grinder for us last season,” Lovrich said of Dent. “He worked in a lot of tough situations and proved that he can handle the pressure. I think he will be a factor in the closer role.” Carden, a teammate of McGinnis at USA last season, is a hard-throwing left-hander, who could also see action at the back end of a game. “Michael is a midseason guy that we have known about for quite a while,” Lovrich said. “He has a lively arm and may have the best stuff on the team. He has pitched in many different situations, having started, come in relief and closed. He is a great addition to our staff.”

Q.V. Lowe is a winner. He always has been. With more than 40 years of baseball experience and more than 1,100 career Playing Experience victories, Lowe has been the only man AUM has ever known as the leader of its Ocala HS 1961-64 baseball program. Gulf Coast CC 1965-66 In 1986, Lowe was chosen to build the AUM baseball program from scratch and has Auburn University 1967-68 Chicago Cubs Orangization 1968-74 answered with a 923-496 record. In his time at AUM, the Warhawks have made three trips to the NAIA World Series finals and won six conference titles. During his Coaching Experience tenure, Lowe has coached 71 all-conference performers, 40 all-area or all-region Auburn University at Montgomery 1986-pres. selections and 31 NAIA All-Americans. In addition, Lowe has coached more than 20 Head Baseball Coach players who have played in some type of professional baseball league. Montgomery, Ala. Loweâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural program struggled, as the youthful team finished with just an 8-27 mark. However, by his third season at the helm, the Warhawks improved to Montreal Expos Organization 1985-86 win nearly 60 percent of their games and have not had a losing season since. Jacksonville, Fla. (Class AA) In 1990, Lowe helped the Warhawks to the first NAIA World Series appearance in New York Organization 1982-85 school history, after helping AUM to a 40-26 record and an appearance in the NaFt. During their magical season, the Warhawks earned the Columbus, Ohio (Class AAA) 1983-85 District 27 and Area 5 Championships, while Lowe earned District, Area and NAIA Coach Lurleen B. Wallace Community College 1975-82 of the Year honors. Baseball Head Coach Two seasons later, the Warhawks were Andalusia, Ala. back in the World Series after Lowe guided the team to the first of four seasons in which AUM won 50 or more games. The Senators finished 1992 with a 50-18 overall record. AUM earned its second District and Area Championship, with Lowe being selected the Coach of the Year in each, as well as the Diamond National Coach of the Year. During the next 13 seasons at AUM, the Warhawks won 40 or more games seven times and averaged nearly 42 wins during the stretch. However, Lowe and AUM were unable to return to the World Series. The Warhawks won five conference championships, while Lowe was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1995, Louisville Slugger Regional Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998, and the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Coach of the Year in 2000. Then in 2006, the Warhawks won both the SSAC and the Region XIII Championship and earned a third trip to the NAIA World Series, where they advanced to the national quarterfinals. In 2008, Lowe earned his 1,000 career coaching victory, while in 2009, the WarAUM Head Coach Q.V. Lowe lettered for two seasons at Auburn University, where he still hawks made an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. holds the career record for earned run average and winning percentage. Last season, Lowe helped the Warhawks to a 42-19 record and a return-appearance to the NAIA National Tournament. The skipper helped AUM to a 16-2 record in the

Warhawk Baseball extremely competitive West Division of the SSAC and a 30-7 record in its final 37 games. For his accomplishments, he was selected the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coach of the Year. Lowe began playing baseball as a youngster in Ocala, Fla., eventually becoming an all-state pitcher for Ocala High School. He compiled a three-year record of 23-3, including a perfect 10-0 senior campaign. After high school, he moved on to the junior college ranks, where he posted an 18-5 mark at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla. He earned back-to-back All-Conference and All-America honors and helped lead his team to the Junior College World Series in 1965, his freshman season. Lowe then transferred to Auburn University, where he played for legendary Auburn Head Coach Paul Nix. He finished his two-year career with the Tigers with a 23-3 record, including a sparkling 15-1 mark as a senior. During his final collegiate season, he helped Auburn to the 1967 NCAA College World Series and was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, as well as All-America honors. Lowe still has his name etched in the Auburn record book, holding the Tiger record for lowest career earned run average (1.69) and highest career winning percentage (.885). His 10 complete games during his senior season is tied for the best total in school annals, while he holds the season (5.40) and career (5.87) record for hits allowed per nine innings. Following his standout college career, Lowe was selected in the 19th round of the 1967 Amateur Draft by the Chicago Cubs. After eight seasons in the organization, he opted for a coaching career and landed his first position at Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College in Andalusia, Ala., in 1975. While at LBW, Lowe compiled a 179-101 record, before returning to professional baseball as a full-time coach with the Yankees in 1982. He moved to the Montreal Expos system in 1985, serving as a minor league pitching instructor. Lowe was inducted into the Auburn University Tiger Walk Hall of Fame in 1998 and was inducted into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2011, he became the first AUM head coach selected to the NAIA Hall of Fame, while he was also named the 2007 Alabama Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year. Lowe and his wife, Ginger, reside in Wetumpka. He has one son, Josh, who played for AUM for two seasons.

Despite spending just one season as a player at Auburn Montgomery, Lovrich helped the Warhawks to their first winning season in the program’s history, while posting a .342 batting average. Prior to transferring to AUM, Lovrich was a three-year starter at Jacksonville State University and a member of the Gamecocks’ 1988 NCAA Division II World Series team that advanced to the championship game. Lovrich attended Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Ala., where he led the Eagles to the state baseball semifinals as a senior. He was a three-time first-team all-state selection in baseball, a first-team all-state selection in football and an honorable mention all-state selection in basketball. His goals include helping AUM to an NAIA national championship, becoming a college head coach and teaching his son, Camden, the game of baseball. Lovrich received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1990 and completed work on a master’s degree in education in 1995. Lovrich is married to the former Holli Wells from Cottonwood, Ala. They are the proud parents of three children, Camden, Cate and Allie Grace.

Clay Booth Graduate Assistant Coach Third Season Clay Booth returns for his third season as a graduate assistant with the Warhawks’ baseball program, following a two-year playing career with the team. A member of the 2009 AUM team which advanced to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, Booth appeared in 80 career games for the Warhawks, finishing with a .291 career batting average. He recorded 12 doubles and four home runs, while driving in 46 runs. Prior to his arrival at AUM, Booth was a two-year letterwinner at Shelton State Community College, where he helped the Bucs to a fourth-place finish at the Junior College World Series as a senior. During his career at SSCC, Booth posted a .296 batting average, with 11 doubles and 41 runs batted in. A native of Tuscaloosa, Booth prepped at Tuscaloosa High School, where he played for head coach Kenny Burns. He is the son of Billy and Tracey Booth. He has one sister, Ashley, and one brother, Brett, who plays baseball for the University of Alabama. He is majoring in sports leadership.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES Auburn University at Montgomery is governed by the Auburn University Board of Trustees. The President Pro Tempore of the Board is Raymond J. Harbert. HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978,

Dr. John G. Veres III Chancellor Auburn University at Montgomery, 1976 Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received h his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology in 1976 and 1978. He has worked for over 3 30 years with the university and has been serving as chancellor since May 2006. “I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have the opportun nity to serve the university as chancellor,” said Veres. For six years prior to becoming chancellor, Veres was executive director of AUM University Outreach, which conducts applied research and provides consulting services, including economic forecasting, equal employment opportunity and public policy formation. The division’s Center for Advanced Technologies, Center for Business and Economic Development, Center for Demographic Research and Center for Government and Public Affairs manage annually more than $9 million in contracts. Veres received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resources management topics, including over 40 articles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organizations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure validity and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as special master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. Long involved in community affairs, Veres currently serves on the boards of directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, the Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery and the River Region United Way. Veres was also the inaugural recipient of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance’s H. Roe Bartle Presidential Leadership Award, based on his support of nonprofit management education. Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR STEVE CROTZ

Steve Crotz Athletics Director Missouri, 1979 Steve Crotz is currently in his fourth year as full-time athletic director at Auburn Montgomery, after sserving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs have been established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been stalwarts in the community and excelled in the classroom. i Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 C Coaches’ Polls and teams have won three national championships. In addition, 121 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 47 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its first meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 99 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 32 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 500 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

THE NAIA AND SSAC

The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black, a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski, a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the GeorgiaAlabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s committment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 204 school’s recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 77 points on a 100-point scale, the 23rd-best total in the country.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES Since the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University at Montgomery has been known throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness on the field and court of play. Furthermore, AUM offers some of the best facilities in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit. The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a refinishing of the gym floor, the installation of new bleachers and new chair-back

seating, bringing the upgraded capacity to 2,760. The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the newly built on-campus softball field, on which the AUM softball team was able to play all home games during the 2010 season. The field is part of the AUM Softball Complex, which will include a new state-of-the-art press box, concessions stand and restrooms, set to be completed in December of 2011. The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refinished playing surface for each of its 10 courts. Aside from serving as the site for all AUM men’s and women’s home tennis matches, the AUM Tennis Complex also serves as a host site for the annual Small College Blue & Gray Classic held by the City

of Montgomery. The AUM Soccer Complex has undergone several updates since its construction in 1985. In the early 2000’s new Olympic-style goals were installed along with a new scoreboard in 2006. Several landscaping renovations have taken place at the facility as well. The AUM Baseball Complex serves as the home field for Warhawks baseball and features stadium seating, a grandstand, press box and concessions stand for the convenience of AUM baseball fans. A clubhouse is also on site for all AUM student-The complex has served as host site for the NAIA Region XIII Tournament in 2006, the 2007 SSAC Baseball tournament and the 2011 NAIA Opening Round Baseball Tournament.
