2012 OUTLOOK WARHAWK SOCCER
After only a penalty shootout prevented the Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team from returning to the NAIA tournament last season, optimism is high for 2012. With several key returners, along with a strong nine-player recruiting class, the Warhawks enter the season ranked ninth in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. AUM finished with a 12-5-4 record last year, including an 8-2-2 mark in the powerful Southern States Athletic Conference. The Warhawks fell to Southern Poly in the SSAC Championship game, but failed to receive an at-large bid to the national tournament. “Not making the NAIA tournament was a disappointment, and I certainly felt like we deserved to be there,” Head Coach Wulf Koch said. “I think our guys understand the importance of each match and how the result of every contest contributes to the tabulation of RPI and the national rankings to qualify for the tournament. I feel like our returning guys and our signing class put us in a good position to return to the NAIA tournament.” Among the 13 returners from last year’s squad are junior team captains Vignir Johannesson and Taian Souza. Johannesson earned second-team all-conference honors for his goalkeeping in 2011, finishing with 72 saves and a 1.44 GAA. Souza provided support to all sides of the field from his right defensive position, and both have displayed strong leadership qualities. T “They have played a key role th this spring in leading offseason wo workouts on the field, as well as training in the weight room,” Ko Koch said. “I think that both of th them understand what it takes to get to the next level as a te team. That is the primary reason we nominated them as captains. To this point, their nominations ha have certainly been warranted.” In goal, AUM will have both Joha hannesson and senior Bosko Kova vacevic returning to compete for pla playing time. While Johannesson sta started 20 of the 21 games last se season, Koch believes both of hi goalies are fully capable of his st starting for long stretches. “B “Both of these guys are great le leaders on our team and, most importantly, our team feels comfortable with either in goal,” Koch said. “That is usually a very important factor in the chemistry of a team.” Ten Warhawks will be fighting for playing time on defense this season, including six newcomers. Returners include 2011 starters Souza, senior Matias Aristegui and junior Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson. However, AUM will have to replace starters Chris Ross and Kristjan Hannesson from last year’s defensive unit. While Souza appears secure in his starting right back position, Koch expects a battle for playing time among the rest. Sophomores Atli Johannsson, a transfer from Huntingdon College, and Axel Vignisson will fight with returning sophomore Dagur Jonsson and freshmen Mathis Kroeger, Niklas Hunold, Daniel Grobelny and Alexander Neubarth for minutes. “Matias and Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson played a good bit for us last season, but will be in a battle to secure playing time with some of our newcomers,” Koch said. “Atli Johannsson will be a very important part of our defense. We also have 3-4 new guys who will contend for starting positions. I would not be surprised if we had several new starters among our defense.” “We recruited Axel Vignisson from Iceland as a left back in hopes he could help with our loss of Chris Ross,” Koch continued. “Axel can also play left midfield, so he fits the mold of the outside back we are looking for with the ability to go forward.” “Centrally, Daniel, Niklas and Mathis all came through very good club teams in Germany and tactically are very good. We lacked the ability to control the game from the back, play the ball to the midfield and

4
then move forward. I think these three additions will really strengthen our team from that standpoint.” In the midfield, AUM returns four players who received extensive playing time last season. Juniors Christian Holthaus and Vitor Silva, as well as sophomores Elvar Sigurdsson and Zack Chanthongphio are all expected to be important contributors again in 2012. Sigurdsson finished second on the team with 72 shots last year, finishing with two goals and five assists in 18 starts. Koch believes he is prepared to have a breakout season this year. “I think Elvar has a huge ceiling and showed a little bit of that late last year,” Koch said. “He had a very good spring and is very dangerous. I expect very good things from him this season as an attacking midfielder.” “Zack and Christian will compete for a holding midfielder spot,” Koch added. “Vitor can play wide, but has the versatility to play elsewhere. He can also play forward for us, so he is one of those guys you can rely to play anywhere, and we need him to.” Incoming freshman Sebastian Wladyko will also compete for playing time at midfielder after joining the Warhawks from FC Union Berlin in Germany. “[Wladyko] is a big guy, very athletic and extremely technical,” Koch said. “He will likely be a key player for us down the road.” Senior forward Angel Gonzalez, who finished second on the team in goals (7) and points (19) last season, will be one of several important returners to AUM’s frontline in 2012. “Angel is a very skilled player technically,” Koch said. “Tactically he needs to continue to improve. He needs to gain confidence, especially in front of the goal, and hopefully he can put in eight or nine goals, which is what we are looking for from him.” Gonzalez will be joined by returning junior Baron Watson. Watson finished with one goal and two assists in limited action last year, but Koch expects big things from the Jamaican native this season. “I really think Baron is due for a breakout season,” Koch said. “He had a year to get acclimated and had a great spring. I think his confidence is at a very high point and he believes that we trust him.” Silva will also spend time at the forward position, while junior Cesar Kestring, freshman Agust Arnarson and sophomore Carl Ackered, a transfer from Webber International University, will provide depth up front. The Warhawks will play their usual difficult non-conference schedule in 2012. Matchups include a Sept. 8 road trip to defending national champions Lindsey Wilson, while AUM will also play Tennessee Wesleyan and SCAD-Savannah, who finished the 2011 season nationally ranked. Things will not get any easier once conference play begins. The SSAC leads all conferences with five schools in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, including two in the top five. “Arguably, we play in the best conference in the NAIA,” Koch said. “You play against quality opponent’s night in and night out. Every game in the conference is a game you need to come ready to play.” Despite the challenges throughout the season, Koch believes that the pieces are there to make a serious run at the national tournament, which will be held in Montgomery for the next two seasons. “If we don’t show up for a match, we are going to have issues,” Koch said. “If we show up and play every match with urgency and follow the game plan, I think we will have good success.”

HEAD COACH WULF-DIETER KOCH WARHAWK SOCCER
Wulf-Dieter Koch Head Coach
2012 SEASON
Sixth Season at AUM 61-28-9 Overall Maine-Fort Kent, 1989
COACHING STAFF
The face of the AUM men’s soccer program since 2007, Wulf-Dieter Koch enters his sixth season at the helm of the men’s soccer program and ninth overall at AUM. During his tenure with the Warhawks, Koch has posted a 61-28-9 overall mark with the men’s program, after compiling a 48-19-3 record in three seasons coaching the women’s team. Under Koch’s leadership, AUM has finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll four times, won the 2007 NAIA Region XIII tournament championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Final Four in his first season. In 2011, Koch led the Warhawks to a 12-5-4 record. AUM reached the finals of the SSAC tournament, and were only a penalty shootout away from winning the conference and returning to the NAIA tournament. Five players earned spots on SSAC all-conference teams, including two first-team selections. Men’s soccer also continued to have success academically, with 10 players making the SSAC All-Academic team. At AUM, the team received the Team G.P.A. award, given to the program which has the highest average overall for the year. With a 3.19 team G.P.A., it was the second straight year they had earned the top spot. In 2010, the Warhawks struggled with injuries, inexperience and a difficult schedule, posting the first losing season in Koch’s time as head coach at AUM. The Warhawks posted a 7-9-2 record on the season, after facing six teams that finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, four others among the others receiving votes and seven teams that qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. Despite the on-field results, the Warhawks were recognized for their sportsmanship on the pitch, in the classroom and in the community with the 2010 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award, one of 23 given out by the NAIA for each of its 23 championship sports. The team was also presented the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award, after posting a team grade point average of 3.27 during the previous academic year. In his previous three seasons, Koch helped the Warhawks to a 42-14-3 record, the NAIA National Tournament in 2007, a No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll the week of Sept. 16, 2008, and eight weeks ranked within the top 10. Koch, who now has 17 years of experience coaching on the men’s side and 23 years at the college level, began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Maine-Fort Kent in 1991 and 1992. He then moved on to the University of Maine-Machias, where he led the men’s program for four seasons. He spent four seasons in South Dakota at National American University where he led the Mavericks to four consecutive NAIA post-season appearances, reaching the NAIA Region III semifinals all four seasons, and advancing on to the NAIA National Tournament once. While at NAU, Koch was selected to the 1998 NAIA and National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional Coach of the Year and was named the 2000 NAIA Region III Sectional Coach of the Year. Koch moved south following the 2001 season, taking over the men’s and women’s head coaching position at Spring Hill College, where he spent two seasons before coming to AUM. Koch was hired as the AUM women’s head coach for three seasons, where he posted a 48-19-3 record, a NAIA National Tournament Sweet 16 appearance and a SSAC championship in 2004. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Koch enjoyed a stellar four year career at UMFK, where he led the Bengals in scoring as a freshman and sophomore, and captained the squad during his junior and senior years. He finished his career with 32 goals and 28 assists, was a member of UMFK’s 1988 championship soccer team, which captured the North East College Athletic Conference championship and the NAIA District 5 semifinal. He was named to the All-North East College Athletic Conference team his junior and senior campaigns, was named to the All-Maine Collegiate Team and was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year during his senior year. In 2007, Koch was inducted into the UMFK Sports Hall of Fame. Koch earned his bachelor’s degree in history in 1989 and his master’s in athletic administration from Springfield (Mass.) College in 1991. He also holds his teaching certification from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. In addition, Koch holds the prestigious Master’s Diploma, the highest level of coaching education offered by the NSCAA, as well as “A” and “Youth” licenses from the United States Soccer Federation. Koch is married to the former Jane Desjardins. The couple, which resides in Montgomery, has three children, Ben, a senior at AUM, Alanna, a sophomore at AUM, and Joshua, age 13.

ATHLETIC AFFILIATIONS The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, vol2012 SEASON
leyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Wojciechowski, Sports Information Director Tyler Hyde, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference.

The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 26 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 36 years, AUM has claimed 21 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate

athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the 2011 RECAP
philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 school’s recognized

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY A broad-based academic institution, Auburn University at Montgomery is organized into five schools - Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences. The genesis of the institution came after a request from the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degreegranting institution. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 and the first classes were offered in 1969. Originally housed in several buildings downtown, 500 acres in east Montgomery were purchased in 1971 so the campus could move to a location where it could grow. In 1973, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an operationally separate institution. The Auburn University Board of Trustees maintains responsibility for governance of AUM.

coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girl’s basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.
AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY
Steve Crotz is currently in his fifth year as Athletics Director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won four national championships. In addition, 158 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 70 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its first meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage.
In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 135 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 45 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 750 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runnerup finish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball
