2012 OUTLOOK Beginning the fourth season in the program’s short existence, the goal of the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team’s 2012 season is simple: reach the NAIA Tournament. Last season, the Warhawks won 34 games, including the first 18 of the year, but finished just 6-14 in the highly-competitive Southern States Athletic Conference. Despite winning five games against opponents ranked in the NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 poll, AUM still found itself on the outside looking in. “This is our first class of four-year seniors, so we bring back a strong group of experienced players,” fourth-year head coach Chris SteinerWilcoxson said. “The growth of those players over the years will certainly help this team and will help with the transition of trying to replace them when they graduate. The leadership they provide is invaluable.” The Warhawks have all the pieces in place to make that goal a reality. AUM returns starters at catcher, second base and shortstop, as well as all three outfield positions and its designated player. Catcher Danielle Kirkpatrick, outfielders Joanna Reynolds and Megan Rogers, and DP Shea Driggers all return for their fourth season, having started nearly every game since their arrival on campus. Jyssica Pepper also returns as the team’s starting shortstop following a stellar freshman campaign. On top of that, the Warhawks also return threetime NAIA All-American pitcher Brandi Richards and the school’s single-season win leader in Courtney Baker. Richards, who has won 39 games and sports a career earned run average of 1.30, also is a force at the plate, where she led AUM in batting average, home runs and runs batted in last season. Along with a solid core of returning players, the Warhawks also welcome a talented group of newcomers, highlighted by hard-hitting first baseman Sarah Suggs, MaxPreps High School All-American hurler Cassie Daniels, and a pair of junior college standouts in Haley Johnson and Laci Driggers. “I am really excited about the newcomers we added to our program,” Steiner-Wilcoxson added. “They all have adjusted well to being at AUM and are ready to challenge for playing time immediately. More importantly, they will have a year to learn under a great group of seniors who know what it takes to win at the college level.” In addition to its own lofty goals, fellow coaches have also taken note, as AUM was voted No. 13 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Top-25, despite finishing last season as one of the others receiving votes. “We play a tough schedule every year and we take pride in that,” Steiner-Wilcoxson concluded. “We play in all the big tournaments and really challenge ourselves, because I feel like if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Our conference is very challenging and is one of the toughest in the nation. You have to learn to bring your ‘A’ game every day or else you are going to be in for a long day. Seeing teams that we played

with make it to the World Series really opened the eyes of our girls and showed them what they need to do to get to that level. I really feel like they are pushing each other and motivated to take that next step. We are certainly looking forward to the challenge.”

also scored a school-record 37 runs and ranks among the top 10 in four career statistics (runs, doubles, triples and home runs). She also added six stolen bases.

Catchers Behind the plate, Kirkpatrick returns having started 100 games during the past three seasons. The senior from McDonough, Ga., has been a steady player for the Warhawks, posting a .270 career batting average, while driving in 31 runs and scoring 42 more. Perhaps her biggest contribution comes to managing the pitching staff, where she flourishes. “Danielle is such a leader and will do a great job of managing our pitchers,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said of her starting catcher. “The chemistry that she has with Brandi is a part of the individual success she has achieved. She will play a big role in helping our new pitchers adjust to a new environment.”

Backing up Kirkpatrick will be newcomer Holly Saint, a transfer from Central Alabama Community College. A name known to the program, Holly is the younger sister of former AUM first baseman Taylor Saint. “Holly will help out at the catcher position,” Steiner-Wilcoxson added. “She has adjusted well to our pitching staff and they are comfortable with her behind the plate. One thing I learned early in my career is that you can never have enough catchers, so Holly is a welcomed addition to our team.”

Infield Following the graduation of all-conference selections Whitney Wyatt and Taylor Burt, the Warhawks have question marks at the corner positions. However, the emergence of Pepper, both offensively and defensively, has Steiner-Wilcoxson optimistic about the infield. “Jyssica has established herself as a premier shortstop in our conference,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She is already a talented player, but with a year of learning and growing under her belt, she will make a tremendous impact on our infield. She will also be a great leader on our team.” Pepper anchors the infield, after posting a .337 batting average with four home runs and 29 RBI in her inaugural season with the program. She

Also returning for the Warhawks is Kacie Ryal, who started 36 games last season at second base for the team. Ryal batted a respectable .269, while driving in 18 runs and scoring 14 more. However, her role with the team this year will likely be at first base, where she and Suggs will battle for the starting spot. Suggs joins the team following a standout prep career at Sparkman High School in Huntsville, where she hit 15 home runs and .457 as a senior. “Kacie is making the adjustment from second to first and I think her experience and versatility will really help us,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “Sarah is coming off a very good fall season and is ready to contribute to our team. I am excited about what she brings to our program.” Johnson, Laci Driggers and Katie Spain all saw action at second base during the fall, creating a healthy competition for the starting spot at the position. Johnson hit .327, with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs last season at Central Alabama Community College, while Driggers transferred to AUM from Wallace-Hanceville Community College, where she helped the Lady Lions to a 52-14 record last season. Spain, who is from Whittier, Calif., led La Serna High School in home runs and runs batted in each of the past two seasons. “Katie, Laci and Haley will all compete for time at second base,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “I really feel like second base was a hole we needed to fill and that all three stepped up during the fall. We are expecting good things out of second base this year.” Pepper will be inked in at shortstop, but Spain or Driggers could also see action if a day off is

Warhawks Softball needed. “With her athleticism and strength, we are really looking forward to what Jyssica is able to do this year,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “Her impact on our team cannot be measured. She will also be a great teacher to whoever we break in at second base.” At third base, Kendall Thomas and Cheyenna Kawal each return and will battle for the starting spot. Thomas missed much of the 2011 season battling a health issue, but played in 30 games as a true freshman in 2009. Kawal had a pair of home runs and drove in 10 runs in 45 games last season. Freshman Jenna Molina will also add depth at the position. “We feel like Kendall and Chey will push each other for playing time,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “They are both capable players in the field and handle the bat well. We are also excited about the addition of Jenna to our program and feel like she will be able to learn a lot from a year working with them.” S. Driggers could also factor into the rotation at first base, but will likely serve as the Warhawks’ designated hitter on most occasions. “We know what Shea is capable of and are expecting her to provide the same pop as she has the previous three years,” Steiner-Wilcoxson of Driggers. “She will likely hit in the middle of our lineup and will be counted on to drive in runs when we have girls on base.”

Outfield The outfield is without question the deepest position on the 2012 roster and is highlighted by the return of Richards and Reynolds. “Joanna and Brandi have anchored our outfield for the past four years,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “They bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the entire unit and will be the cornerstones as we push to have the best outfield in the conference. They can do it at the plate and in the field, are good base runners and athletic players.” Richards finished last season with a .401 batting average, 10 home runs and 39 RBIs, all team highs, while Reynolds scored 20 runs and stole six bases, despite hitting a productive, but career-low .296.

Also returning at the position are Rogers, fellow senior Carol Ann McIntyre and junior Rachel Stuart, all of which played a key role in the successes of the team last season. Rogers started 31 games for the Warhawks, while McIntyre was

2012 OUTLOOK the team’s top pinch-hitting option. Stuart hit better than .300 for the second straight season and filled a void at the top of the lineup, left by an injury. “Megan, Carol Ann and Rachel have both played multiple positions in the outfield for us, so their versatility is a definite plus,” Steiner-Wilcoxson added. “They will both contribute to our team and, depending on who is swinging a hot stick, could also see time as our designated hitter. Carol Ann came in and really played a significant role with her bat as a pinch hitter and in the field when Brandi pitched. Megan brings a solid glove and speed to the bases. Rachel had a great sophomore season and was a solid lead-off option for us last season. I think with her coming into her junior year, she is more prepared and will contribute a lot for us this year.” Also factoring into the rotation is a trio of talented newcomers in L. Driggers, Ainsley Faulk and Amie Kelly. Faulk was an all-county selection all four years at Woodland High School in Cartersville, Ga., while Kelly helped the Lady Toros of Spanish Fort High School in Spanish Fort, Ala., to six consecutive area titles. “Ainsley and Amie will really benefit from a year with this experienced group,” Steiner-Wilcoxson added. “They are both slappers at the plate and bring speed on the bases. Laci will also contribute in the outfield. We are excited about their potential, knowing we are going to take such a big hit at the position after the season.”

“Courtney had a great freshman season,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “Winning 16 games in your first year as a collegiate pitcher is huge, especially considering that you had an All-American starting ahead of you. She was able to earn a lot from working with Brandi and Holly (Currie) every day. It was great to see her come out and throw well this fall, especially considering that we brought in a couple new pitchers. We are really excited about what she will bring to the table this spring”

Pitchers The pitching staff returned more than 84 percent of its innings pitched from last season and may be even stronger with the addition of two talented newcomers to the rotation. “I think having four pitchers who are nothing alike will really be a strength for us,” SteinerWilcoxson said. “If one of them is not on during a game, we have options that we feel good about. Not having to rely on one or two pitchers is certainly a nice change.” Anchoring the unit is Richards, who sports a career record of 39-22 and a 1.30 ERA. She has also set the school record for strikeouts with 587 during her career, including two games of 16. “I am really excited about seeing how Brandi responds to being a senior,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She deals with the pressure and stress of big games so well and we are counting on her to do that again this year. She has always been a team-first player and I have been proud to watch her grow and mature over the past three years. She has built such a tremendous foundation for our pitchers and our program. I think her love for the game and her will to overcome things are a true testament to her character.” Also returning is Baker, who won a school-best 16 games as a true freshman, the only season record not held by Richards. Baker finished the year with a 16-8 record and a 2.48 earned run average, while serving as a nice compliment to the power arm of Richards.

The addition of Johnson and Daniels will also provide flexibility for Steiner-Wilcoxson. Johnson finished her two seasons at CACC with a 43-9 combined record and an ERA under 1.50, while Daniels was 38-5 as a senior, tossing 20 shutouts and six no-hitters en route to Alabama 4A Player of the Year honors at Dallas County High School in Plantersville, Ala. “We are really excited about the addition of Haley and Cassie to our pitching staff,” SteinerWilcoxson added. “Combining them with Brandi and Courtney really gives us some good options in the circle. Haley is adjusting from the JUCO level to the demand we put on our players and has responded well. She is also a good hitter, so she will play several roles on our team. Cassie is going through a similar transition. She was a great high school pitcher, helping her team to a state championship as a senior, and I feel will have a successful career at AUM. We think she has the potential to fill the pitching void that Brandi will leave after the season.”

Playing Experience Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson enters her fourth year as the head coach of the Auburn University at MontRobertsdale HS 1990-94 gomery softball program, having built the program from the ground up. Under her direction, the Warhawks have won more than 100 games in just three seasons, as the Auburn University 1994-99 programs sports a 103-58-2 overall record. During her 12-year career, she has won 314 games and sports a career winning percentage of .643. She has also won more than 30 games in five consecutive seasons. Steiner-Wilcoxson has also led several players to individual success while with the program, as AUM has had three NAIA All-American selections, 13 All-Southern States Athletic Confer- Montgomery, Ala. ence performers, two league All-Division honorees and three SSAC All-Freshman team members. Standout Brandi Richards has garnered All-American honors in each of her first three seasons, is a two-time Reinhardt College 2004-07 SSAC Pitcher of the Year and earned SSAC West Division Player of the Year honors in 2011. In addition, Waleska, Ga. three Warhawks have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, while 13 student-athletes have been named to the conference All-Academic team. Palmetto High School 2000-04 Last season, Steiner-Wilcoxson led the Warhawks to a 34-20 overall record, including 18 consecutive Palmetto, Fla. victories to start the season. AUM won five games against teams from the top-25, including a 2-0 victory over William Carey in the SSAC Tournament. The Lady Crusaders were ranked No. 2 at the time of the Eufaula High School 1999-00 defeat. In her first season at the helm, Steiner-Wilcoxson helped the Warhawks to a 31-22-1 overall record, Eufaula, Ala. including a 19-12-1 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference and a fourth-place finish in the league. In 2010, the Warhawks won a school record 38 games, finishing the year with a 38-16-1 record and ending the season ranked 20th in the nation. Prior to AUM, Steiner-Wilcoxson had a three-year stint at Reinhardt College in Waleska, Ga., where she launched the Eagles’ softball program in 2005. At Reinhardt, she compiled an 84-80 overall record, including a 55-31 record in conference games. In only her second year at the helm of the Reinhardt program, Steiner-Wilcoxson was named the 2006 Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Coach of the Year following her team’s third-place finish in the SSAC regular season and runner-up finish at the conference tournament. The Eagles were ranked No. 21 in the final NAIA poll that year and ended with a third-place finish at the Region XIII tournament. During her collegiate career, the Loxley, Ala., native has coached 25 All-SSAC players, 10 SSAC All-Freshman team members and three All-Region XIII players. Four All-Americans have benefited from her tutelage. SteinerWilcoxson has also instructed 21 SSAC All-Academic team members along with seven NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Prior to Steiner-Wilcoxson’s move to Reinhardt, she served as head coach at Palmetto High School in Florida, where she coached from August 2000 to May 2004. She won two District 15 titles and was selected to coach the Florida West All-Star team twice. Her squad set a school record for victories in 2003 with 30, and her teams ranked in the top five of the state’s 4-A ratings in each year of her leadership. Steiner-Wilcoxson began her coaching career in 1999 at Eufaula High School, where she established a school record for wins in a season with 29 in 2000 and finished as district runner-up and sub-state finalist. A two-time team captain at Auburn University, Steiner-Wilcoxson was a three-year starter for the Tigers during the AU program’s first three seasons in existence. She hit the first home run in Tigers’ softball history and was selected to the Southeastern Conference All-Academic team twice. Steiner-Wilcoxson led Auburn in home runs in 1997 and closed her playing career in 1999 by leading the team in at-bats, triples and stolen bases. She currently ranks third in the Auburn record book in career stolen bases and triples. She transferred to Auburn following her freshman year at Huntingdon College, where she played varsity softball and volleyball. A 1994 graduate of Robertsdale High School in Robertsdale, Ala., Steiner-Wilcoxson was a four-year starter in softball, volleyball and basketball. College Auburn University 2007 Holly Currie returns for her fourth season with the program as an assistant coach following a standAuburn, Ala. out playing career at Auburn University. During her tenure at AUM, Currie has helped the Warhawks to a 103-58-2 record and a team earned Playing Experience run average of 2.01. She has coached a three-time All-American and 2011 West Division Player of the Pisgah HS 1999-03 Year in Brandi Richards, four Southern States Athletic Conference performers and a member of the league’s All-Freshman team. On four occasions, a Warhawk pitcher has garnered league Pitcher of the Auburn University 1994-99 Week honors and last season Richards was selected the program’s first NAIA Pitcher of the Week. Currie is a native of Pisgah, Ala., and graduated Coaching Experience from Auburn in 2007. She had a storied career with the AUM 2007-pres. Tigers and left Auburn as the all-time leader in wins (60), Assistant Softball Coach strikeouts (782), appearances (143), innings pitched (644), Montgomery, Ala. games started (105) and saves (11). She was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week on two occasions and was the last AU pitcher to hurl a perfect game when she turned the trick in 2005. She threw a school-record eight no-hitters in her career. Currie was a two-way player for the Tigers and finished her career at the plate listed among the top 10 in 12 categories. She finished with 36 home runs, which is third all-time, and 151 RBI, which is second. She also hit .317 for her career and had a slugging percentage of .560. Her collegiate honors include being named All-SEC, All-Region and, in 2005, to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Louisville Slugger All-American team. She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, she was named an AllAmerican by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Prior to Auburn, she played for Pisgah High School, where she helped lead them to the Alabama State Championship three straight years and was named State Tournament MVP all three years. She was also named Alabama Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and she won prestigious Miss Softball of Alabama award as a senior. She was named Gatorade Player of the Year for 2003, and was a two time All-American, who set Alabama state records with 159 career wins and 1,730 career strikeouts. Currie also played basketball, and was named State Tournament MVP after leading Pisgah to the 2003 title.

College Auburn University 2009 Joining the AUM coaching staff for her first season as a graduate assisAuburn, Ala. tant coach is former Auburn University standout Tatiana Fernandez. While with the Warhawks, Fernandez will work specifically with the catchers and Playing Experience outfielders, as well as assist with hitting instruction. Dade Christian High School 2002-05 Fernandez, who was a four-year starter for the Tigers, played in 227 Auburn University 2006-09 games while at Auburn, starting in 225. She finished with 189 hits, including 23 home runs and 40 doubles. She posted a career batting average of .293 and drove in 123 runs. Prior to joining the Tigers, Fernandez was a five-sport star at Dade Christian High School in Miami, Fla., where she earned Florida All-State Second Team honors and hit .589 as a junior. She also helped lead Dade Christian to the district championship and a spot in the state regional finals in 2004. Fernandez graduated from Auburn with a degree in criminology in 2009. She spent last year working as a correction’s officer in Lee County. She is currently working on her master’s degree in early childhood and special education at AUM.

WARHAWKS IN THE COMMUNITY

Warhawks Softball

The AUM softball team takes pride in their work ethic on the field and in the classroom, but also in the community. This offseason the Warhawks participated in a number of events in the state, including Commerce for Canines, the Harvest Festival at the Montgomery Children’s Center and numerous camps for local youth. The annual Commerce for Canines project was designed to increase awareness of adoptable dogs from the local Humane Society by walking them in a parade in downtown Montgomery. The 2011 event was cancelled due to rain, but the Warhawks spent a day leading up to the event at the Humane Society, where they helped prepare the dogs for the parade. The softball program also spent an afternoon assisting with the Harvest Festival at the Montgomery Children’s Center, where they interacted with children with severe medical conditions and who were wheelchair bound. While at the center, members of the team helped the children participate in the festival, playing a number of different games with the students. Perhaps the Warhawks’ biggest source of outreach is their partnership with local youth softball organizations. AUM has countless day camps for local girls interested in improving their skills at the game of softball in the Montgomery area. Other projects that the Warhawks have been involved in were the Champion-ship Toy Drive, volunteering at the LPGA Golf Tournament held in Prattville, Volunteer Day at Brewbaker Elementary, the MacMillan Magnet School Reading Night, the KaBoom Build a Playground project and working with the City of Montgomery to build a new playground at Oak Park.

THE AUM SOFTBALL COMPLEX

The AUM Softball Complex received a major face-lift during the past year and is now one of the premier on-campus facilities at the NAIA level. Among the improvements made during the renovation were a new state-of the-art press box, bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand and increased storage space. Of the 200 seats, 52 are backed bucket seats, which are available for season purchase. The project was capped by the addition of a new lighting system at the field, which will now allow the Warhawks to practice and play at night. In addition, the bullpens for both the home and visiting teams were upgraded. The capacity of the AUM Softball Complex now stands at better than 400. The dimensions of the field are 210 feet down the left-field line, 220 to straight-away center field and 205 feet down the right-field line. AUM officially played its first game at the facility on Feb. 16, 2010, when it hosted Judson College. The Warhawks won both games in the doubleheader and currently sports a 27-10-1 (.724 winning percentage) record at the complex.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES Auburn University at Montgomery is governed by the Auburn University Board of Trustees. The President Pro Tempore of the Board is Raymond J. Harbert. HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association.

CHANCELLOR JOHN G. VERES III

John G. Veres III Chancellor Auburn University at Montgomery, 1976 Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from AUM in 1976 and 1978. He has worked for more than 30 years with the university and has been serving as chancellor since May 2006. “I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor,” said Veres. For six years prior to becoming chancellor, Veres was executive director of AUM University Outreach, which conducts applied research and provides consulting services, including economic forecasting, equal employment opportunity and public policy formation. The division’s Center for Advanced Technologies, Center for Business and Economic Development, Center for Demographic Research and Center for Government and Public Affairs manage annually more than $9 million in contracts. Veres received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resources management topics, including over 40 articles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organizations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure validity and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as special master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. Long involved in community affairs, Veres currently serves on the boards of directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, the Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery and the River Region United Way. Veres was also the inaugural recipient of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance’s H. Roe Bartle Presidential Leadership Award, based on his support of nonprofit management education. Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR STEVE CROTZ

Steve Crotz Athletic Director Missouri, 1979 Steve Crotz is currently in his fourth year as full-time athletic director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have flourished, programs have been established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been stalwarts in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won three national championships. In addition, 121 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 47 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its first meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 99 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 32 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 500 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and finished as runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

THE NAIA AND SSAC

The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the Southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black; a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski; a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey; and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the GeorgiaAlabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.
