Op mism is high entering the season for the Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team a er pos ng 21 victories and narrowly missing the NAIA Na onal Tournament last season. Last year, the Warhawks raced out of the gates and won their first 10 games. Head coach Dan Davis is confident the team can experience that same success in 2013-14, while also adding to those accomplishments by reaching the NAIA Na onal Tournament for the first me since the 2008-09 season. “We felt like we did enough to get into the tournament, but that is the way it goes some mes,” Davis said. “I was really pleased with what we accomplished, but we probably just ran out of steam. I also think injuries caught up with us, but it is hard to be disappointed when you finished 21-9.” Despite the posi ve outlook, the Warhawks will have to overcome the loss of honorable men on All-America selec on LaKenya Drayton, as well as depar ng seniors Kamesha Strong, Cai e Cunningham and Ashley Rush. “The class itself was huge for us because their leadership was phenomenal,” Davis said. “I knew they would come in every day and be ready to work. They were the ones that o en set the tone, regardless of if it was prac ce or a game.”
Psachal Maize This year’s team features a solid mix of veteran experience, while also welcoming seven talented newcomers. Seniors Psachal Maize and Ka e Williams each return a er earning All-West Division honors from the Southern States Athle c

Conference. Both Maize and Williams proved they were capable of carrying the team last season, but will be looked upon to add leadership to the program. Also returning is the junior trio of guard Jazmine Jackson and post players Marren Schwartz and Tina Odume. Each player will begin their third season with the program and know the expecta ons of the program. “We need Ka e and Psachal to increase from a leadership standpoint, but I think both players are completely capable of doing so,” Davis said. “I am not concerned about their produc on on the court, as much as them embracing being leaders, both on and off the court. Marren, Tina and Jazmine have been with us for two full seasons. They know our system and our win-forever philosophy. We have invested the me in them and we are hopeful they will perform.” The Warhawks have added to the team’s depth by bringing in players at each posi on that will compete for star ng posi ons. Junior college transfers Jatoria Carter from Northwest Florida State, Gabby Brown from Alabama Southern and Dominique Henley are proven winners, while the program also adds a pair of NCAA Division I transfers in Sasha Robinson and Shanice Burne e from Lipscomb University. In addi on, the Warhawks have added a pair of prep standouts in Kaylan Withrow and Aerial Carruthers, who will compete for minutes as true freshmen. “We feel like our newcomers are really going to contribute immediately,” Davis said. “We brought in seven players and they will all make an impact on our team this season. The big key will be how quickly these girls gel with our returning players, but we have already started to see signs of the camaraderie we want for our team.” Despite a challenging schedule, with their returning experience, talent and depth, Davis and the Warhawks are primed to make a run toward qualifying for the NAIA Tournament in 2013-14. “We have a tough schedule this year and we will be tested earlier,” Davis said. “There will be no easy games for us, everyone will make us work, but we like that. We have great depth and I think our returners will be able to provide the leadership we lost. Our team con nues to buy into our philosophy and system. It should be a really fun year.”

The Guards With the return of Maize, Williams and Jackson, the guard posi on has the possibility of the being the deepest for the Warhawks. Williams keys the returners, following a junior campaign in which she logged a team-high 31.6 minutes per game. The Smyrna, Tenn. na ve, averaged 9.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals, while hi ng a team-best 63 3-pointers. “Ka e was one of our most consistent players last year,” Davis said. “She was able to hit open shots, while also crea ng off the dribble. We just need her to play the way she did last season and not try to do too much.” Maize will also play a significant role for the Warhawks, but will be eased back into the lineup following off-season foot surgery. Last season, Maize averaged 9.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest and hit a teamleading 85.1 percent from the free-throw line “We hope Psachal will be ready for our first game, but she will have to work through some things during the month of November,” Davis said. “I am hoping she will hit her peak by conference play. If she comes back and is the same player she was last year, we will be in good shape.” Jackson will compete for the star ng point-guard spot a er averaging 4.3 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in the back-up role last season. “Jaz has really benefi ed from learning from Kamesha the past two seasons,” said Davis. “She knows what we expect from our point guard and con nues to improve.

She has waited pa ently for a chance to be a starter, so it will be interes ng to see if she will take advantage of that opportunity. She is also a good enough shooter that she could see me at the off-guard posi on.” Also compe ng for a star ng spot is Carter, who prepped at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery and played for former AUM standout LaKenya Knight. During her prep career, Carter scored be er than 1,000 points, grabbed 400 rebounds and snagged 200 steals, while earning Metro Player of the Year honors as a senior. Last season, she averaged 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game for the Raiders. “We feel very confident with Jaz or Jatoria running the point,” Davis said. “She is extremely quick and is probably our best on-ball defender. She can hit the open three, but can create her own shot off the dribble. She is also very good at ge ng other people involved in the offense.” Adding depth to the posi on are transfers Henley and Burne e, as well as true freshmen Withrow and Carruthers. Burne e joins the team from Lipscomb University, where she averaged 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game last season for the Bison. Henley helped Shelton State to a 33-1 record by averaging 6.5 points and 2.7 rebounds for the Lady Bucs. Last season, Withrow hit 41 percent of her 3-point a empts as a senior at Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tenn., while Carruthers averaged 5.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game at Duluth High School in Duluth, Ga. “Dominique is a shooter,” Davis said. “She is an aggressive, physical defender that can square up and shoot the 3-pointer. She also has a nice mid-range game and will provide nice depth to the guard posi on.” “Shanice is such a consistent player,” Davis said. “She brings a versa lity to our team that we have lacked since Haley (McIntyre Rosa) played here. She can shoot the ball from outside, but is strong enough to play inside as well. That will open up the floor for other players on the floor, but also give us some flexibility with our lineup. I also think she is one of our best perimeter defenders.” “Kaylan is a dominant shooter,” Davis said. “She is a quick player that can pass the ball well. I think the biggest thing for her will be to get stronger, but I am confident she will be able to help us this year.” “Aerial has the poten al to be a good player for us down the road,” said Davis. “She has the ability to play both the point guard and off-guard posi ons, but will need to adjust to the speed of the game at the college level.”

said. “Last year, teams focused on stopping Kenya, while this year, Tina will force defenses to guard both post players. She has to con nue to work on ge ng in be er condi on, but right now I would project her to compete for a star ng posi on. Both her and Marren are star ng to look like the players we envisioned when we signed them out of high school.” Robinson will relocate to Montgomery along with Burne e and provide a presence inside for the Warhawks. Robinson averaged just 2.3 points and 3.5 rebounds last season for Lipscomb, but started 23 games as a true freshman for the Bison. Brown, who played with Carter at Jeff Davis, was a two- me all-conference selec on at Alabama Southern and finished her career with the Eagles with 773 points and 509 rebounds in just 60 games. “Gabby has a ton of poten al,” Davis said. “She is strong and skilled near the basket, but needs to con nue to get in be er shape and work through the physicality at this level.” “Sasha is really star ng to hit her stride,” Davis said. “It took her a li le me to adjust, but we think she will be an immediate contributor inside. She is strong inside, but also has a nice mid-range game. We are coun ng on her to be in our rota on of post players.”
The Posts This year’s team will feature four post players, all with poten al to be the Warhawks’ breakout player. Schwartz and Odume return as likely starters, but will be pushed by newcomers Robinson and Brown. Schwartz and Odume combined to start 28 games in the blocks last season. Schwartz averaged 3.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest, while Odume posted 4.9 points and 3.9 boards per game, including a pair of double-doubles. “Marren has looked really strong this preseason,” Davis said. “She has come back with a mental toughness that she lacked last season. She has improved around the basket and seems to be playing with a lot of confidence.” “I think Tina will provide a nice second op on for us inside,” Davis

HEAD COACH DAN DAVIS Sixth Season at AUM | 84-65 Overall Record | AUM, 1999
Beginning his sixth season as the head coach of the women’s basketball program at Auburn Montgomery, Dan Davis has con nued the team’s proud history of success on and off the court. In his five seasons as head coach, Davis has led the Warhawks to the NAIA Tournament and earned Southern States Athle c Conference Coach of the Year honors. During his me at the helm, Davis has also coached two All-American players, six SSAC AllConference performers, six SSAC All-Division selec ons and two SSAC All-Freshman team members, while leading the team to an overall mark of 84-65. Last season, Davis guided the Warhawks to a 21-9 record, marking the most wins in the program since the 2006-07 season. The season was highlighted by a 54-49 victory over NAIA na onal runner-up Lee University, a program which AUM has beaten only four mes in program history. Under his leadership, LaKenya Drayton became the 24th AUM player to earn All-America status, earning honorable men on honors, along with all-conference accolades from the SSAC. Addi onally, Ka e Williams and Psachal Maize were selected the SSAC All-West Division team. The two seasons prior, the team finished with iden cal 14-16 records. The 2011-12 season gave plenty of reasons for op mism, however, with newcomers Drayton and Keisha Moore both earning spots on the SSAC All-West Division team and Marren Schwartz making the All-Freshman team. The team also con nued its success in the classroom, finishing with a grade-point average over 3.0 for the fourth consecu ve year. Four players earned spots on the SSAC All-Academic team. The 2010-11 season was capped by the Warhawks winning four of their final six games, while also welcoming Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth into the program’s 1,000-Point Club. During the 2009-10 campaign, Davis guided AUM to a 15-15 record and a e for fourth place in the SSAC standings. Highligh ng the season was a 73-49 defeat of perennial conference powerhouse, Lee University. In addi on, Cassie Moore earned honorable men on All-America honors, while also being named the SSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season, Davis served as interim head women’s basketball coach and led the Warhawks to a NAIA Na onal Tournament appearance and a 20-9 overall record. Under his leadership, AUM led the SSAC in scoring defense and 3-point field goal percentage, while ranking second in field goal percentage, defensive field goal percentage and defensive 3-point field goal percentage. Moore earned Third-Team All-American honors, while the Warhawks finished the season ranked 25th in the na on. Along with success on the court, the Warhawks have also excelled in the classroom under Davis, as student-athletes have been named NAIA Academic AllAmericans nine mes. They have earned SSAC Academic All-Conference honors 22 mes. The women’s basketball program has also had the AUM Female Honor Student-Athlete during three of his five seasons and has posted a team GPA of 3.0 or be er during eight of 10 semesters under Davis. SSAC Member Ins tu ons
The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In November of 2012, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 16 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Ka e Bright and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affilia on with the NAIA, 29 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 27 teams have finished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 38 years, AUM has claimed 22 na onal championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering firstrate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first na onal organiza on to offer ins tu onal postseason opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. For the third consecu ve year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 73 points on a 100-point scale, a mark ed for the 75th-best total in the country.

Just as important as success on the court and in the classroom, giving back to the community has always been a key philosophy of the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team. The success on the court is evident. Beginning its 25th year of existence, AUM has made 18 NAIA National Tournament appearances, won better than 70 percent of its games and had 24 All-American selections. In the classroom, the Warhawks consistently finish semesters with a team cumulative grade-point average of better than 3.0. During the 2012 spring semester, the women’s basketball team had seven players earn a 3.0 GPA. AUM had three student-athletes named to the 2012-13 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. The women’s basketball team has also earned two AUM Honor StudentAthlete awards, sponsored by the SSAC. But the component of the Warhawks’ philosophy that is often overlooked is the way the team gives back. During the past year, the women’s basketball program has participated in a variety of events in the community, benefitting citizens of all ages. One of the most popular events the Warhawks participate in is the annual Make a Difference Day. During the event, players and coaches interact with local youth, reading books and doing various activities with children at the Molina Learning Center in Montgomery. Along with reading to the children, members of the team also help the center’s students pick out books for their own personal library. The team works with AUM professor Dr. Nancy Anderson on the project. The team also held a one-day clinic for members of the Prattville YMCA, at which they taught basketball fundamentals and life skills to more than 40 local youth. During the holiday season, the Warhawks were active in the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. They also participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service initiative and spent time reading to students at Blount Elementary School and the First United Methodist Church’s Early Childhood Development Center. Additionally, players and coaches have volunteered to run activity booths at the Blount Fall Festival and have conducted small clinics for members of the Early Childhood Development Center. Members of the team have helped AUM students move into the residence halls and spearheaded AUM’s first blood drive of the year as part of its partnership with the NAIA Leadership Program. The women’s team also sponsored the 14th annual Warhawk Challenge in early October, where nearly 70 runners participated in the four-mile trail run. The Warhawks will also partner with the Joy to Life Foundation again this year for their annual “Pink Zone” game, to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. In past years, AUM has honored survivors of the dreaded disease following its game.
