2013 Women’s Season Outlook Expecta ons will always be high for the Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis team, and for good reason. The Warhawks have won eight of the last nine NAIA na onal championships, including tles in 2011 and 2012. Despite losing two of the team’s top players from last season, head coach Rolando Vargas knows that this year’s squad will expect nothing less than another championship. “Obviously our goals are always high,” the 2012 NAIA Coach of the Year said. “We know the responsibility we have as a team. People expect us to play for tles.” As the Warhawks look for a third straight tle, they will be doing so without 2012 NAIA First-Team AllAmerican Ana Veselinovic and Kveta Hajkova, who received Honorable Men on from the NAIA. Veselinovic compiled a 23-2 singles record, playing all but one match from the No. 1 posi on, and a perfect 25-0 record at No. 1 doubles with Jade Cur s. Hajkova, meanwhile, was a perfect 26-0 in singles from the third, fourth and fi h posi ons and 23-2 in doubles. She returns as a student assistant coach this season. “Ana and Kveta were tremendous players,” Vargas said. “They were very experienced, and it will be hard to replace them because of what they were able to accomplish. I was happy to see that Tiffany William was able to step up this fall and reach the finals of the Super Bowl. That showed me that she will be able to step up and help us at the top of the lineup.” William, a sophomore from London, England, rotated between the third and fourth singles spots in 2012, finishing 20-4 overall and
4
earning first-team NAIA All-American honors. This fall, she won the individual NAIA women’s singles tle, and reached the finals of the Super Bowl at the USTA/ITA Naonal Small College Championships. Vargas expects her to slide into the No. 2 singles posi on behind Cur s in 2013. “She worked hard in the summer and came in with more confidence,” he said of William. “I think that was the key. She was able to have a good run and surprise a couple of players in winning the regionals. And then she goes to na onals as the top seed and she was able to live up to the expecta ons. I’m hoping that experience will help her in the spring.” Cur s returns for her junior season a er a perfect season last year, culmina ng in first-team All-American recogni on. She went 22-0 in singles, including a 20-0 record from the No. 2 spot, and was also undefeated with Veselinovic in doubles. During the fall, she and new partner Morgane Zowczak were regional champions in doubles. As an upperclassman, Vargas has high expecta ons for the Saltash, England, na ve. “Jade has been tremendous for our program,” Vargas said. “I think she’s ready to play at the top of the lineup, though it will certainly be more demanding. I’m also looking forward to her becoming more of a leader now that she is a junior.” Zowczak, in addi on to playing with Cur s in doubles, is expected to slot into the No. 3 singles posion for her senior season. She went 15-3 as a doubles player last season, along with a 13-2 singles mark, and was named a second-team
All-American. Vargas expects her to build on a successful offseason. “I’m really happy with Morgane’s progress,” he said. “In her eyes, I can see how much she wants to improve. She’s probably going to play at the number three posi on, and I think she can handle that. With the experience that she has, I think she’s going to do real well.” Returning senior Hagar Caro will compete with newcomers Chanel Cunningham and Maria Fernanda Vargas for the remaining three posi ons in the star ng lineup. Caro earned all-conference honors a er playing at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and No. 2 doubles with William. Cunningham comes to AUM from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where she was ranked 15th na onally at the junior college level. Vargas, a freshman, was the No. 1 ranked junior player in her na ve country of Columbia. “Usually teams that win na onal tles win because of their strength at the bo om of the lineup,” Vargas said. “Hagar was very fundamental to our success last year, and I’m hoping that she will be ready to contribute for us again. I’m excited about our new players as well. I’m hoping they can bond together and do a lot of good things for us.” Though a lot is expected of this year’s squad, Vargas wants the Warhawks to focus on the basics. “I want them to be a team,” he said. “And to always give 100 percent. If they do that, the results are going to pay off. I’m looking forward to it. We’ve won eight of the last nine, and we’ve always been in the finals, so we’ve had tremendous success. I’m hoping for it to con nue.”
2013 Men’s Season Outlook A er an exit in the NAIA Quarterfinals last season, there are plenty of reasons to believe that this year’s Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team can contend for its 10th na onal championship in 2013. The Warhawks return all but one player from a squad which finished last season ranked fi h in the na on, highlighted by SSAC Player and Freshman of the Year, Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff. AUM also has two addi ons, senior Tim Hewi and sophomore Othmane Lalami, who enter the year ranked in the top 20 na onally for singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa on. Head Coach Rolando Vargas expects the pair, along with sophomore Miguel Grifol, to provide much needed depth this season. The new players will be suppor ng a group of returners that finished last year 17-8, winning its eighth straight SSAC Championship in the process. Pinones-Haltenhoff led the way for the Warhawks, winning 20 of 24 matches from the No. 1 singles posi on and going 16-2 at No. 2 doubles, playing primarily with Zinelabidine Jouini. He earned NAIA First-Team All-America recogni on for his accomplishments. Entering 2013 as the second-ranked NAIA singles player by the ITA, Vargas hopes for a similar season in Pinones-Haltenhoff ’s sophomore year.
“Nico was outstanding last year,” Vargas said. “Being so young, it’s always difficult to start in the top posi on, but he was ready for the challenge. Hopefully he can keep it up and keep working hard. Having him and Tim gives us a lot of opons at the top of our lineup.” Hewi is a transfer from Auburn
University who prac ced with the Warhawks last season. He partnered with Pinones-Haltenhoff in the fall to win the NAIA na onal championships. The Bournemouth, England, na ve also had a successful fall in singles, finishing second to Pinones-Haltenhoff in regionals. “He definitely knows what it takes to play at the college level,” Vargas said. “Having him on the team has just been tremendous because he is a good leader. He works hard, and his energy spreads to the rest of the team. He’s going to be a great addi on to our team this season.” A er the top two posi ons, there appears to be an open ba le for the other spots in the star ng lineup. Lalami, a sophomore from Casablanca, Morocco, who also prac ced with AUM last year, is coming off a semifinal performance in regionals during the fall, losing in three tough sets to Pinones-Haltenhoff. “Othmane played really well in the fall,” Vargas said. “At regionals, you could tell from the look in his eye that he wanted to show the team what he was made of. It’s going to be interes ng to see how he develops. If he plays the way he did in the fall, he could certainly earn the three or four posi on.” Lalami will likely play with Jouini in doubles a er the pair advanced to the finals of regionals in the fall. A junior, Jouini was 22-3 in singles last year (primarily at No. 5) and 18-7 overall in doubles, earning first-team all-conference honors. “Zino was great for us last year,” Vargas said. “He had the most singles victories on the team. He will definitely be compe ng for a spot in the middle of the lineup.” Senior Bence Toth, a secondteam NAIA All-American last year, will be another contender for the No. 3 posi on. The Budapest, Hungary, na ve was 15-8 in singles, including a 14-8 mark at No. 2 singles, and he is the only player remaining from AUM’s 2010 na onal championship winning team. “Bence has all the experience,” Vargas said. “He’s played in the top posi ons for us the past few years, and he’s had a lot of success. I think he has a bit of an edge for the third spot because of his experience.” Grifol, AUM’s third addi on this year, will also compete for playing
me, along with Josh Reason (who earned NAIA All-American honorable men on in 2012) and Ma as Dasso. “Miguel is a good young player who will be ready to play in the spring,” Vargas said of Grifol. “He’s a top player from Argen na who has a lot of skill.” Reason went 15-8 from the No.
3 singles posi on last year for the Warhawks, and also saw extensive ac on at No. 1 doubles. “Josh showed a lot of confidence, and was able to step up for us last year a er not having a lot of experience,” Vargas said. “He had a great run, and will certainly be important to our success this year.” Dasso played primarily at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles in 2012, earning second-team all-conference honors for his performance. “Ma as has definitely shown improvement, and he was a valuable player for our success last season,” Vargas said. “I think he’s only going to get be er.” Vargas expects his team’s depth to be a benefit throughout the season, with the compe veness for posi ons in the star ng lineup leading players to bring their best to each prac ce. With such an abundance of talent, hopes are high for a return to the na onal championship finals for the first me in three years. “My first two years here, we finished third and fi h in the na on,” Vargas said. “We always want to improve from last year, and this is the strongest team I’ve coached at AUM. If the players work hard, and stay commi ed to the team, we should definitely be in a posi on to win a tle.”

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY A broad-based academic ins tu on, Auburn University at Montgomery is organized into five schools - Business, Educa on, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences. The genesis of the ins tu on came a er a request from the ci zens of the Montgomery area to establish an addi onal degree-gran ng ins tu on. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 and the first classes were offered in 1969. Originally housed in several buildings downtown, 500 acres in east Montgomery were purchased in 1971 so the campus could move to a loca on where it could grow. In 1973, the Southern Associa on of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an opera onally separate ins tu on. The Auburn University Board of Trustees maintains responsibility for governance of AUM.
