Following consecu ve appearances in the NAIA Na onal Tournaments and being ranked in the top 10 of the NAIA Coaches’ poll for 13 straight polls, the Auburn Montgomery so ball team is s ll hungry to take the next step as a program. The Warhawks tallied a school-record 45 wins last season, securing their second 40-win season in the short five-year history of the program. AUM swept through the Lindsey Wilson bracket of the NAIA Na onal Tournament Opening Round, before advancing to the Na onal Tournament Final Site in Columbus, Ga. While at the final site, the Warhawks finished with a 1-2 record and ended the season ranked eighth na onally. “We were really pleased with the way last season turned out,” head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “We had a lot of ques on marks heading into the season a er gradua ng our first full class of seniors, but we picked up where we le off. We established ourselves as a relevant team at the na onal level based on our success in 2012 and by how we played against other teams ranked in the top 25.” AUM returns several key pieces from last season’s team, including two NAIA All-Americans in junior pitcher Cassie Daniels and junior third baseman Ka e Spain. The Warhawks also return two- me Southern States Athle c Conference All-Division selec on in senior Laci Driggers, as well as three league AllFreshman team members in catcher Lauren Shaw, pitcher/first baseman Kayla Hale and pitcher Taylor Powell. The Warhawks also return a pair of talented junior ou ielders in Amie Kelly and Ainsley Faulk, as well as the sophomore trio of second baseman Jennifer Jenkins and ou ielders Paige Nielsen and Ka e Brinkman. Several newcomers will be expected to make immediate contribu ons, as the Warhawks look to replace starters at second base, shortstop, centerfield and right field. Therese Byrne, a freshman ou ielder from Bradenton, Fla., and Alexia Boggess, a first-year shortstop from Hampton, Ga., will likely take over two of the vacated posi ons, while AUM’s depth will provide healthy compe on for the other two star ng spots. In addi on, junior first baseman Jade Sasser will make her debut at AUM a er missing last season due to a knee injury. Junior college infielder Ashlee Craig, catcher Sarah Angulo, first baseman Victoria Creamer, second baseman Marisa Magnuson and third baseman Claire Wilson will each compete for playing me at their respec ve posi on.

Lauren Shaw

“We have a very talented team, but we are young,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson. “The key for us will be how we handle the pressure of playing a top-25 team day in and day out, especially in our conference. I think the leadership from our returners will be huge. I also think the hunger that our returning players have will carry over into our newcomers. They came to be part of a successful program and knew what our goals were when they signed. I think a er the past two seasons, we know what it takes to get to an elite level and are prepared to do the work to remain there.”

Catchers The Warhawks will carry two catchers for the upcoming season in Shaw and Angulo, but SteinerWilcoxson feels strongly that the team will not skip a beat with either. “Having two catchers that we feel confident in only makes us a be er team,” the sixth-year head coach said. “We have had some really good defensive catchers in the past, but Lauren and Sarah will give us strong play behind the plate and also contribute offensively. I think this is the best group of catchers we have ever had.” Shaw enters the season as the incumbent starter, a er hi ng three home runs and three doubles as a freshman. She started 31 games last season and worked primarily behind the plate while Daniels was in the circle. “Lauren was our star ng catcher for much of last season and developed a great rela onship catching Cassie,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson. “She is a good hi er, but had an adjustment going from high school and travel ball pitching to college pitchers. She hit the ball very well in the fall and really stepped up as a leader. We are expec ng big things out of her this year.” Angulo joins the Warhawks from American Heritage High School in Planta on, Fla., where she helped the Patriots to three FHSAA State Championships and a 146-31 record during her six seasons. She was also a member of the tradi onal-power Gold Coast Hurricanes travel ball team. “I think Sarah is one of the best freshman catchers in the country,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She is a very skilled defender and is a great communicator. She does a great job working with the pitchers and is a strong hi er. She has played against some of the best high schools and travel ball teams in the na on, so I think her adjustment to the college game should be smooth.”

Infield On the infield, the Warhawks return a pair of starters at the corners, but will look to fill the void le by the departed Haley Johnson at second base and Jyssica Pepper at shortstop. The lone definite on the infield will be at third base, where Spain will patrol for a second straight season. In 2013, Spain set the school record for home runs and RBIs in a season, while matching the season record for runs scored. “Ka e is not sa sfied with her play at third base and is determined to be the best,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “We brought her in as a middle infielder and she had not played third base before last season. A er a couple injuries, we needed someone athle c to come in and fill the hole, and she stepped right in. She does a great job and plays with no fear at a posi on where you have to be on your toes and agile.” “We knew Ka e had a strong s ck, but she also has a tremendous work ethic,” added Steiner-Wilcoxson. “She blew past all the program’s offensive records last season and I expect she will have another great season this year. She wants to be the best and she wants to win. She is willing to do the work to achieve both.” Backing Spain up will be Wilson, a freshman from Towns County High School in Georgia. Wilson was the first so ball player at Towns County to earn an athle c scholarship and was a four- me all-region selec on. “Claire is not a natural third baseman, but has done a good job of learning the posi on,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said of Wilson. “She is a hard worker and will do anything to help the team succeed. She will backup Spain, but she s ll has a chance to help us this year.” Across the diamond at first base, the Warhawks return Hale, who started 56 games last season and responded with 12 home runs, 10 doubles and 46 runs ba ed in. Hale is projected to see more at bats as the Warhawks’ designated player in 2014, as Sasser will likely to return to first base. “Kayla did a great job of filling in at first base a er Jade’s injury,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson. “She had phenomenal offensive numbers and was rewarded by the conference. She did a good job of dealing with the pressure of having to play every day as a freshman and knowing what we needed her to do, both at the plate and in the field. Her numbers are only going to get be er as she becomes more confident. We are really looking forward to having her back.” “We are excited about ge ng Jade back,” SteinerWilcoxson said. “She worked really hard to get back, both physically and mentally, from her knee injury. She

took a lot of reps in the fall to help her get her back into shape and gain confidence. She is a dynamic force when she is on the field and provides tremendous leadership. She will also be a strong hi er in the middle of lineup.” Creamer, a freshman from perennial-power Robertsdale High School will add to the depth at the posi on. “Victoria has worked hard since joining the program and has learned what it takes to be a college so ball player,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “We look for her to con nue to grow as a player and to push Jade and Kayla.” At shortstop, Boggess will start the season as the starter following a standout prep career at Luella High School in Locust Grove, Ga. As a senior, she was selected an Elite 80 for all Georgia high schools. “Lexi has been a great addi on to our program,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said of Boggess. “She inherited the star ng spot when Pepper did not return and has embraced the opportunity. She works extremely hard and is a bulldog on the field. She plays the game the way it is meant to be played. She is fearless and has earned the respect of her teammates. She has loads of power poten al at the plate.” Craig, a junior transfer from Cha ahoochee Valley Community College, will back up Boggess and could also see ac on at second base. “Ashlee has helped out backing up at shortstop and second base,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson. “She works hard and is a great example for the team.” The main ques on mark on the infield is at second base, where AUM looks to replace a two-year starter in Johnson. “Right now second base is wide open,” SteinerWilcoxson said. “Jennifer (Jenkins) and Marisa (Magnuson) have both worked hard trying to establish themselves as the front runner. We like what each of them are doing.” Jenkins appeared in 40 games last season, hi ng .263 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in 38 at bats. The sophomore made 15 starts in 2013, but none at second base. “Jennifer played a lot for us last year as a backup at the corner infield spots, so she had to make the adjustment of moving to second base,” said SteinerWilcoxson. “She worked really hard this summer and fall to get acclimated to the posi on. We are excited to see what she is capable of doing.” Also vying for the star ng spot is Magnuson, a three- me all-conference performer at Matanzas High

School in Palm Coast, Fla. “Marisa came to us from Florida, where she played for a great travel ball organiza on,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She is very calm under pressure, but is always hustling and is intense. She is comfortable at second base and con nues to improve.”

Ou ield The Warhawks return a two-year starter in Driggers, but she will transi on from le field to centerfield for her senior season. Driggers enjoyed a stellar junior campaign in which she hit .316 with 13 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 runs ba ed in. “Laci is an all-around athlete,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She brings so many things to the table. She has good pop, but she also brings speed. She can hit a double or she can drop down a bunt. When we first signed her, we thought she would play second base, but she has been in the ou ield the past two seasons and has done a great job. She covers a lot of ground, has a good arm and is a great leader.” Byrne provides flexibility by being able to play all three spots in the ou ield, but will start at one of the corner spots and hit leadoff for the Warhawks. “Therese is going to be a very good ball player for us,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson of Byrne. “She is a le -handed slapper who has great speed. She has one of the best arms we have had in the ou ield and is an all-around player. We are hoping she can hit in the leadoff spot and put a lot of pressure on defenses. We think she can fill the spot Laci will leave at the end of the year.” The remaining star ng spot will be decided amongst the four returning ou ielders on the AUM roster. Faulk and Nielsen will add to the rota on in right field, while Kelly and Brinkman will ba le for an opportunity in le field. “Ainsley is a slapper who brings a lot of speed,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “She has done a good job of adjus ng to playing whatever posi on we have asked her to. She has a consistent s ck and is a strong bunter. We see a lot of power poten al with Paige. She had a lot of opportuni es last year as a pinch hi er and came through. She needs to keep playing with confidence and adjus ng to the speed at this level.” “Amie has improved tremendously,” added SteinerWilcoxson. “Defensively, she is solid. She has great footwork and a strong glove. She is going to add to our team by being a slap hi er and with her speed. Ka e has moved to the ou ield and has made a nice adjustment. She has worked very hard on her footwork

and has improved as a hi er.”

Pitchers Much like seasons past, the Warhawks will enjoy depth in the pitching circle, as they return three starters in 2014. “We are extremely excited about having three topof-the-line star ng pitchers back,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “Cassie (Daniels) set all the records last year, but we are not a program that is going to throw just one pitcher. We want our pitchers to last the en re season and have something le in the tank during the postseason. Pitching will certainly be our strength this year. More importantly, they will give our new kids me to grow and develop. They know how important they are to our team and they have fully embraced that.” Daniels will anchor the staff a er se ng school records with 23 wins, striking out 276 and tossing 21 complete games. She also tossed a pair of no-hi ers and collected seven shutouts. “I think Cassie is our first real power pitcher,” said Steiner-Wilcoxson. “She is a hard thrower and is effec vely wild. She is so confident and handles the pressure incredibly. She has earned the respect of her teammates and the coaches in our conference. She is one of the best pitchers in the country.” “Cassie threw a couple of no-hi ers and was throwing her very best at the end of the season,” Steiner-Wilcoxson added. “I think a lot of that had to do with Taylor and Kayla ea ng some innings and allowing us to rest her at mes. She went toe-to-toe with the ace of every team we played and showed that she is one of the best pitchers in the country. I don’t know if we ran out of gas, or didn’t hit in the clutch when we needed to, or if we just didn’t execute in cri cal mes, but we fell a li le short last season. However, thanks to her arm, we had a chance to win every game.” Powell and Hale will also see significant me in the circle as sophomores. Powell collected 13 wins last season and did not allow an earned run in her first 29 2/3 innings. Hale tallied eight victories and set a school record with three saves. “Taylor and Kayla both had great freshman seasons, but this year they will not surprise any teams,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “They have worked hard and know that other programs have already seen them pitch. They con nue to get be er and I am expec ng another strong year from each of them.”

WARHAWK NATION

The AUM softball team takes pride in its work ethic on the field and in the classroom, and that work ethic also extends into the community. Throughout the year, the Warhawks participated in a number of events across the state. The softball program can frequently be found at the Montgomery Children’s Center, where they spend time with children who have severe medical conditions and are wheelchair-bound. While at the center, members of the team help the children participate in fun activities, playing a number of different games with the students. In October, the Warhawks visited the center to support its Halloween Festival. Perhaps the Warhawks’ biggest source of outreach is their partnership with local youth softball organizations. AUM has countless day camps for local girls interested in improving their skills at the game of softball in the Montgomery area. In the past, the Warhawks have been involved in the annual Champion-ship Holiday Toy Drive (collecting toys for the local sheriff department), volunteering at the LPGA Golf Tournament held in Prattville, helping local gymnasts at United Gymstars & Cheer, Volunteer Day at Brewbaker Elementary, and the KaBoom Build a Playground project, where they worked with the City of Montgomery to build a new playground at Oak Park.

SSAC Member Ins tu ons

The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In November of 2012, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 16 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Ka e Bright and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affilia on with the NAIA, 29 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 27 teams have finished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 38 years, AUM has claimed 22 na onal championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering firstrate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first na onal organiza on to offer ins tu onal postseason opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. For the third consecu ve year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 73 points on a 100-point scale, a mark ed for the 75th-best total in the country.

The AUM Softball Complex has seen many additions since its 2010 debut, and is now one of the premier on-campus facilities at the NAIA level. Among the improvements are a new state-of the-art press box, bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand and increased storage space. Of the 200 seats, 52 are backed bucket seats, which are available for season purchase. The project was capped by the addition of a new lighting system at the field, which allows the Warhawks to practice and play at all hours. In addition, the bullpens for both the home and visiting teams were upgraded. The capacity of the AUM Softball Complex now stands at better than 400. The dimensions of the field are 210 feet down the left-field line, 220 to straight-away center field and 205 feet down the right-field line. AUM officially played its first game at the facility on Feb. 16, 2010, when it hosted Judson College. The Warhawks won both games in the doubleheader and currently sport a 55-21-1 (.721 winning percentage) record at the complex.
