2014 TENNIS OUTLOOK The Auburn Montgomery men’s and women’s tennis teams have combined for 42 appearances in the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) Na onal Tournament and 22 Na onal Championships. Expecta ons for the 2013-14 season remain high for both programs, as the women’s team will look to win its fourth consecu ve championship and 10th in 11 seasons, while the men’s squad will a empt to win its 10th overall championship a er finishing as na onal runner-up last season. The quest for a four-peat by the women will have its challenges, as AUM must replace depar ng All-Americans Tiffany William and Morgane Zowczak. William, who transferred following two years with the Warhawks, posted a 21-2 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 2 spot, while also adding a 21-4 doubles mark. Zowczak was 10-2 for AUM in singles and made an equally strong contribu on in

doubles, where she finished 13-1. The team also lost two-year contributor Hagar Caro, who collected 12 singles wins and 15 doubles victories. However, the women’s team returns three players from last season, including highlydecorated senior Jade Cur s. The Warhawks also return fellow senior Chanel Cunningham and sophomore Maria Vargas from their 17-8 team. Cur s returns for her final season at AUM, a er earning NAIA First-Team All-America honors the previous three years and being named the pres gious Marvin P. Richmond Outstanding Player of the Na onal Tournament twice. Cur s finished last season undefeated and enters the 2014 season with a 60-match winning streak in singles play, as she has not lost since March 13, 2011. “Jade has finished undefeated the past two seasons and is a strong contributor in doubles
as well,” head coach Rolando Vargas said. “She is a strong leader, which will be big considering we added four newcomers.” Cunningham enjoyed a stellar first year with the Warhawks, pos ng a 15-6 singles record, while also winning 12 doubles matches. Cunningham begins the season as the No. 22 singles player in the na on according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa on (ITA). “Chanel stepped up for us last season and we are expec ng the same from her this year,” Vargas said of Cunningham. “She is a solid player, who finds a way to win.” Despite a losing record in both singles and doubles play in her first season with the program, Vargas played a significant role during last year’s tle run. Vargas, who recorded just seven wins on the year, earned singles wins in AUM’s quarterfinal and semifinal victories in the na onal tournament. “Maria played a key role for us during the

Diaz joins the program from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where she was ranked in the top 10 as a junior player. “Paula has a tremendous work ethic and is very fit,” said Vargas of Diaz. “She wants to get be er every day and that will only make our team be er.” Lenertz also enjoyed a strong career in juniors, where she was ranked 63rd in Australia. A na ve of Sydney, she recorded a ranking of 221 in the Interna onal Tennis Federa on (ITF). “Celine is a very talented player, who will play a key role for us this season,” Vargas said. “She has good hands and is an extremely smart player.” A na ve of Prague, Czech Republic, Rudolfova par cipated in numerous junior tournaments, including the Junior Orange Bowl U12, the Eddie Herr Interna onal Junior Tennis Championships, the Moravia Steel Sparta Cup and the Safina Cup. “Anna is a very good player,” Vargas said of Rudolfova. “She is a very defensive-minded player and makes her opponent work for every point.” A transfer from Oklahoma Chris an University, Phakamad was redshirted last season and joined the Warhawks a er the Eagles dropped their women’s tennis program. From Krabi, Thailand, Phakamad competed in several juniors tournaments and won the Singapore G5 doubles tle. “She has a very good a tude and wants to make an impact in our lineup. The men’s squad will look to bounce back from a disappoin ng finish to arguably the greatest na onal championship match last season. The Warhawks tallied a 21-4 record, but fell in the finals of the na onal tournament 5-4 on a third-set ebreak. AUM’s other three losses came to NCAA Division II Na onal Champion Barry, tournament semifinalist West Florida and South Region finalist Lynn. All four of its losses were by 5-4 scores. The Warhawks lost a pair of All-American’s in Tim Hewi and Bence Toth from that team, but return a strong core for 2014, led by two- me First-Team All-American Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff. AUM also returns senior Zinelabidine Jouini and juniors Othmane Lalami and Miguel Grifol, each of which will begin the Spring among the top-14 of the NAIA singles players ranked by the ITA. Senior Josh Reason is also a tested player who will add to the depth of the squad, while freshmen Vincent Dubosclard and Francisco Mendieta will also compete for playing me. Pinones-Haltenhoff has enjoyed a highlydecorated first two seasons with the program, having added conference player of the year honors each season to his All-America accolades. Last year, the Barcelona, Spain, na ve finished 21-1 in singles and 22-2 in doubles play. “Nico had a tremendous season for us last season, dropping just one match,” Vargas said. “He is a great leader and wants to be the best in everything he does, on and off the court. I expect another strong year from him in 2014.” Jouini will likely step into the No. 2 singles spot vacated by Hewi following a stellar Fall season, where he captured singles championships at the UAH Charger Invita onal and USTA/ITA South Regionals. Last season,

he played matches at four different singles posi ons, pos ng a 14-5 record, a er winning 22 matches as a sophomore. “Zino has a lot of experience, but will have to play higher this season,” Vargas said. “He has been pa ent, but has always pushed himself to play higher in the lineup. I think he is ready and will have another strong year.” Lalami and Grifol each enjoyed strong first seasons with the Warhawks in 2013, combining for 30 singles victories and 36 doubles wins. Lalami se led in nicely at the No. 6 singles posi on last year, finishing 10-1 at the spot, but will be asked to move up in the lineup this season. Grifol, an honorable men on AllAmerican as a sophomore, was 14-5 in singles play, but also made a major contribu on in doubles play, where he lost just once all season. He teamed with Pinones-Haltenhoff to finish the year a perfect 21-0 in doubles matches. “Othmane is coming off a great year and that carried over into the Fall season,” said Vargas of Lalami. “He is a hard worker and I an cipate he will have another solid season.” “Miguel is a skilled player, who also had a nice first year with us,” Vargas added of Grifol. “He enjoyed success in singles play, but really stood out in doubles play with Nico. I expect him to have an increased role this season.” Reason was undefeated at 10-0 in singles play as a junior and is 28-11 in singles matches during his career. “Josh is one of our more consistent doubles players,” Vargas said. “He has a good bit of experience and he knows what it takes to play for our team.” Newcomers Dubosclard and Mendieta each arrive to AUM following standout careers on the Junior Circuit. Dubosclard par cipated in the 2007 French Open Juniors Championship, while Mendieta arrives as the top-ranked junior from Columbia. “Vincent is a mature player with a lot of experience,” said Vargas of Dubosclard. “He will play hard during every prac ce and match, and will push some of our returning players for their spot in the lineup.” “Francisco is very strong,” Vargas said of Mendieta. “He chose to come to AUM because of our reputa on of being a strong and close team. He will be a key piece for us this season and in the future.” Rounding out the team will be transfer Luis Vivas, a 2012 First-Team Na onal Junior College Athle c Associa on All-American in doubles at Tyler Junior College in Texas. “Luis will redshirt this season, but came to us from a very successful junior college. SSAC Member Ins tu ons
The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In November of 2012, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 16 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Ka e Bright and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affilia on with the NAIA, 29 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 27 teams have finished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 38 years, AUM has claimed 22 na onal championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering firstrate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first na onal organiza on to offer ins tu onal postseason opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. For the third consecu ve year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 73 points on a 100-point scale, a mark ed for the 75th-best total in the country.
