JIM HERLIHY Director of Athletics First Year Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was been named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the past 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop, Herlihy served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo for seven years. While at Montevallo, Herlihy guided the Falcons through a transition from the Gulf South Conference to their current home, the Peach Belt Conference, while also overseeing the 15 athletic programs, 42 employees, more than 300 student-athletes and seven facilities. He spearheaded the fund raising and construction of three new facilities on campus and improved the Annual Fund by more than 200 percent. Herlihy was also responsible for the addition of five varsity sports at Montevallo. Competitively, the Falcons captured six conference championships and finished as conference runners-up eight times. The school qualified for the NCAA Tournament 15 times under his leadership. Montevallo posted its best finishes in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings under his guidance. Six student-athletes earned All-American status, while three were named Academic All-Americans. Montevallo also produced its firstever conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Herlihy was an instrumental leader in a period of substantial growth at Montevallo. Under his direction, the Falcons increased their studentathlete population by more than 100 percent, while maintaining a strong tradition on the fields of competition and in the classroom. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. The department of athletics was a national finalist for the 2014 NCAA DII Award of Excellence and was recognized by the Peach Belt Conference for community engagement initiatives three times. Member Schools Auburn Montgomery (Montgomery, Ala.) Bethel (McKenzie, Tenn.) Blue Mountain (Blue Mountain, Miss.) Brenau (Gainesville, Ga.) Brewton-Parker (Mt. Vernon, Ga.) Coastal Georgia (Brunswick, Ga.) Dalton State (Dalton, Ga.) Faulkner (Montgomery, Ala.) Loyola (New Orleans, La.) Martin Methodist (Pulaski, Tenn.) Middle Georgia (Cochran, Ga.) Mobile (Mobile, Ala.) William Carey (Hattiesburg, Miss.) Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2015-16 academic year marks the 16th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 74 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 40 years, AUM has claimed 25 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

The Auburn Montgomery men’s soccer team is

poised for a fourth consecutive NAIA Tournament appearance in 2015, as it returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s 13-6-1 squad.

“I think our program is right where we need

to be,” ninth-year head coach Wulf Koch said. “Last year ended in disappointing fashion, but overall I thought it was another solid season for the program. I think the natural thought process was to think we would make it back to the national championship game and win it, but at times we forgot about the process of getting there. I think this year we understand that process and are willing to put in the work to get back to that top level.”

Headlining the returners is senior forward

Yannic Fallack, who earned Second-Team AllAmerican honors from both the NAIA and the NSCAA last season. The 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Fallack scored a team-high 14 goals and added six assists.

Also back are senior midfielders Sebastian

“This year will really come down to how bad

our seniors want to succeed,” Koch said. “We return a strong group and an extremely large senior class, so the returning players will set the tone for the season. From the first moment they return to campus, I would like to see them work and buy into our system. We have a ton of experience and they have played in the national tournament the past three seasons. I certainly feel like we can compete as a top-tier NAIA team.”

The Warhawks also welcome seven newcomers

to the program, all of which will compete for playing time.

Joining the program for the 2015 season will

be goalkeepers Filip Ahlstrom and Hunter Allen, defenders Alex Costa and Kyle Hogg, midfielder William York and forwards Cedarian Brunelle and Nick Davis.

“We are excited about the players we added for

the upcoming season,” Koch said of the newcomers.

to build on a very successful freshman season.”

Patel and Varga will each contribute in a

larger role in 2015, after the duo combined for 37 appearances last season. For his contributions, Varga was named to the SSAC All-Freshman team.

“Krishnan is a guy who can help us, but needs

to have a good start to the preseason,” Koch said. “He is a very vocal player on the pitch, but at times, needs to be a bit more coachable. I would also like to see him become a little more consistent. Franco is a very versatile player who will help us both in the midfield and in the back. He will play a key role for our team in one of those areas.”

York will also seek minutes at the position

following a strong prep career at Montgomery Academy. York earned all-metro honors his final two seasons and was selected the Montgomery Advertiser Metro Player of the Year as a junior. Alan Harwell

Midfielders

The midfield will provide stability for the

Warhawks, while also welcoming a new face to the rotation. The senior trio of Hunold, Patel and Wladyko will anchor the position, while Budic will also see significant minutes after transitioning from his defensive role as a freshman to his more natural role in the midfield.

Hunold, a three-year starter and two-year team

captain, will maintain one of the starting spots after scoring once and assisting on two goals last season, despite playing mainly along the defensive line.

“Niklas is just a great player, leader and

person,” Koch said. “He is as close to a guaranteed starter as we have on our team. His leadership will be key to our team.”

Wladyko, who led the team with 12 assists and

ranked fourth in points, will also enter the season as a starter. After earning First-Team All-SSAC and First-Team NSCAA All-South Region honors last season, Wladyko begins his final season with the Warhawks with 16 career goals and 22 assists.

“Sebastian is probably our key player,” said

Koch. “We have to do a better job of getting him involved. He is a special player who has the potential to play professionally. If he plays well, we will be successful.”

Following a freshman campaign in which he

started 19 games along the defensive line, Budic will look to impact the 2015 squad from the midfield position. Budic enjoyed a highly-decorated first season with the Warhawks, earning allconference, all-freshman and all-region honors.

“Dominik is going to play a huge role for us this

year,” said Koch. “He has a tremendous work ethic and an impressive soccer IQ. I really expect for him

“William is very passionate about the game

and wants to succeed,” Koch said of York. “His role with our team will depend on how he adjusts to the physicality and speed of the college game. He is certainly a guy who has the skill set to help us, potentially this year.”

Forwards

The forward position will likely be the strongest

on the pitch for the Warhawks, returning the Second-Team NAIA All-American Fallack and twotime all-conference selection Harwell. In addition, Neubarth will transition from a defensive role the

will continue to contribute to our team. We are exploring the option of utilizing his strength and physical style of play as a scorer. He has a strong soccer background, so he will find a way to be on the field.”

The trio of Dukes, Hettler and Young will

provide valuable minutes, adding to the overall depth of the team.

“Grant was having a really nice Spring, but

was shut down after an injury,” said Koch. “His progress will really be a nice addition to our team. His role will certainly be increased. Michael had an injury this summer, so we will not have him for the preseason and the first part of the regular season. His role will obviously depend on how his recovery goes. We will rely heavily on Christian during Michael’s absence. He showed a lot of promise as a freshman, so we are looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

Davis and Brunelle each enjoyed stellar prep

careers in Norwich, England and Anchorage, Alaska, respectively. Davis helped Dereham Sixth Form to the Old Catton Junior championship during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, while was a member of the Club State Championship team from 2012-14.

“Cedarian and Nick have the skills to be

very good players for us,” Koch said. “They have tremendous speed and are both very strong. I think they will both be solid contributors to us as freshman.”

past three seasons and look to provide a third scoring option up top. Dukes, Hettler and Young, as well as newcomers Davis and Brunelle will also compete for minutes.

Fallack enjoyed a break-out season for AUM in

2014, when he led the team with 14 goals and 34 points. He added six assists, a mark which ranked tied for second on the squad. In addition to

“Yannic is a clever player,” Koch said of Fallack.

“He takes advantage of his opportunities and has set the expectations very high for the upcoming season after a strong junior campaign.”

Harwell, who earned Second-Team All-SSAC

selection last year, finished with seven goals and five assists in 20 games.

“Alan may be our most athletic kid we have

on our team,” Koch said. “He is so strong and so fast, and really poses problems for our opponents. We are lucky to have a player of his caliber in our program.”

Neubarth is a wild card for the Warhawks, as

he adjusts to the new position. In 44 career games, the senior has tallied just four goals and an assists.

“Alex has had a very solid career for us,” Koch

said. “He has provided stability to our defense and
