LADY SENATORS SOCCER 2010 AUM Lady Senators Outlook For the third time in its young programs history, the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s soccer team advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2009. Expectations for the 2010 season are high and under the director of first-year head coach Jamey Newsome, a return trip to the Tournament is expected. “It is a goal of ours to exceed what last year’s team was able to accomplish,” said Newsome. “Hope (Handley) Clark did a wonderful job putting this team together, so I certainly inherited a very skilled group. We have a lot of leaders on this team and the work ethic of these studentathletes has been phenomenal. We have some high goals for ourselves this upcoming season.”
Ranked 13th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the 2010 Lady Senators return 18 players from last season’s 15-5-2 squad. Leading the returners are senior goalkeeper Daisy Burnfield, senior forward Amber Elam, senior defender Christine DeVito, sophomore defender Dixie Robinson and sophomore midfielder Helga Franklinsdottir, all of whom were first-team All-SSAC selections last season. “The team recently voted Daisy and Amber as Team Captains and they are very deserving of that honor,” added Newsome. “They, along with Christine DeVito, have really been great leaders to our team so far. They are all very encouraging vocally and help push their teammates. Their leadership is an invaluable attribute to a team.” Burnfield was selected the SSAC’s Newcomer of the Year and finished her first season with the Lady Senators with 99 saves, a total good for fourth in the conference. Burnfield allowed less than a goal per match, while logging better than 1,900 minutes in goal. Providing depth in goal will be sophomores Chelsea Heinen and Kelsey Halbert, as well as sophomore newcomer Margret Ingthorsdottir. Elam anchors the forward position after pacing the Lady Senators in

goals (16), assists (11) and points (43) last season. Elam, a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, also led the team with 133 shots, including a team-leading 74 on goal. Senior Tschana Wade and junior second-team All-SSAC selection Kristen Mitchell also return after scoring 12 goals each in 2009, while sophomore Margret Albertsdottir added five goals and five assists. Junior Erica Padula will provide another scoring option, after scoring three goals in just six games during an injury-shortened sophomore season. On defense, DeVito, also a NSCAA second-team All American, and Robinson led a unit that allowed just 22 goals during the 2009 season. In addition, AUM limited its opponents to only 234 shots, compared to 461 for its offense. Sophomore Inga Dis Juliusdottir, who earned second-team all-conference honors last season also returns, while juniors Heather Welch and K.C. Hewitt, as well as sophomore Asta Fridriksdottir will provide depth and leadership at the defender position. Freshman Susan Lotyczweski is a talented freshman from Sharpsburg, Ga., who will also compete for playing time. Franklinsdottir leads a talented group of midfielders, which also includes sophomore returners Alexandra Tomasdottir, Kristin Karlsdottir and Hallie Halbert, and junior transfer Jana Yates. Franklinsdottir was tied for fourth on the team in points last season, scoring 15 points on seven goals and one assist. Tomasdottir posted eight points, including four assists, while Karlsdottir appeared in 11 games last season. Halbert appeared in four games for AUM in 2009, but did not record statistics. Newsome also praised the trio of newcomers (Ingthorsdottir, Lotyczweski and Yates), each of whom bring an added dimension to the Lady Senators. “Jana Yates is a transfer from Middle Georgia College and at this point looks like she is going to find a spot in the starting line-up,” Newsome said. “She is a skilled player with a lot of quickness and seems to be blending in with the team very well. Susan Lotyczweski is a true freshman who has also worked her way into a potential starting spot and has the tools to be an impact player for us. Margret Ingthorsdottir is a talented goalkeeper, who will have the luxury of learning behind Daisy Burnfield for a year.”

LADY SENATORS SOCCER Head Coach Jamey Newsome Mars Hill, 1997 First Season Jamey Newsome is entering his inaugural season as the head coach of the Auburn Montgomery women’s soccer program. In light of the coaching change, Newsome has high hopes for the upcoming season as he will try to add to the success the Lady Senators enjoyed last season. “Coach Newsome has been hired to lead our women’s soccer program to the next level of achievement. Jamey has extensive experience and contacts within the southeast regional club setting. It was important that AUM continue the focus on the development of the total person within our women’s soccer program and I am confident we have found that individual in Coach Newsome,” said Athletic Director Steve Crotz. “Throughout his 15 years of coaching experience, he has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field of competition. It was important to build on our recent success in the women’s soccer program, while maintaining the high academic standards and community involvement expectations for our program. I am confident that Coach Newsome is the perfect fit to guide our program to the next level.” Prior to being named the fifth head coach of the women’s soccer team, Newsome was most recently at Georgia Southern University where he has spent three years as an assistant coach for the women’s team. While at GSU, Newsome assisted the head coach in various areas of coaching, recruiting and video analysis. Newsome began his collegiate coaching experience in 1999 as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where they finished 12-3-3 and were able to obtain the #16 rank nationally. While at Upstate, Newsome was primarily involved in recruiting, player training and scheduling. Newsome has also been involved with the Coweta Cannons Soccer Club in Newnan, Ga., as the Technical Director from 2001-03 and the Director of Coaching from ‘03-’04. Most recently, from ‘05-’07, he was the Assistant Director of the Darlington School Soccer Academy of Rome, Ga., where his duties included training, marketing, event planning and monitoring boarding students. Since 2006, Newsome has been involved with the Olympic Development Program in the development of Georgia’s rising soccer talent through the Georgia State Soccer Association. He also currently holds the United States Soccer Federation “B” License and is a USSF “D & E” Coaching License Instructor. A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Newsome played collegiate soccer at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. There he was a four year starter and received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1997. Newsome’s head coaching experience began 1997, when he was the boys’ varsity soccer coach at Enka High School in Ashville, N.C. After a year he became the boy’s and girl’s varsity soccer coach at Madison High School in Marshall, N.C. where he remained until 1999. Newsome is married to the former Jennifer Schommer, and the All-Time AUM Women’s Coaching Records couple has two daughters, Mary Ryan and Leah, and a cat, Moe. LADY SENATORS SOCCER 2009 Year In Review Led by the goal-scoring trio of Amber Elam, Tschana Wade and Kristin Mitchell, the Lady Senators finished the season with an overall record of 15-5-2, including an impressive 10-1 home record. More importantly, Auburn Montgomery returned to the NAIA National Tournament for the third time in the brief history of its women’s soccer program. Despite being voted fourth in the SSAC preseason poll, the Lady Senators started out quickly, winning six of their first seven games with the lone loss coming to No. 5 Martin Methodist. As a result of the hot start, AUM climbed to 18th in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. The Lady Senators dropped their next two decisions, including a loss to No. 4 Lee University, but was able to get back on track quickly, as they posted a 6-0-1 record in their next seven matches. The seven-match stretch was highlighted by an 8-0 win over Southern Wesleyan and 10-0 defeat of Columbia College. AUM had its streak snapped by the nation’s top team, Lindsey Wilson, despite holding the Blue Raiders scoreless through the first 100 minutes. However, two minutes into double overtime, Lindsey Wilson scored the game-winning goal. Despite the loss, AUM climbed in the Coaches’ Poll to No. 15. The Lady Senators finished the regular season with an overall record 12-4-1, including a conference record of 5-2-1 which was good for second place in the SSAC. LADY SENATORS SOCCER Southern States Athletic Conference and NAIA
The 2010-11 academic year will mark the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). Finally in 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 18 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas, is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on August 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall
