P O I N TS O F D I ST I N CT I O N The Department of Business Administration within the School of Business and Technology earned the prestigious accreditation title from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). HT is the only institution of higher learning in Central Texas, the fourth historically Black university in the country, and the 196th college/ university in the world to earn the coveted title of an All-Steinway School. Approximately 736 solar panels are installed to support sustainability efforts, giving Huston-Tillotson University the most on-site solar power generation of any private historically Black institution, and providing eight to ten percent of the university’s total power needs.

ESTABLISHED IN 1875 to educate recently emancipated slaves, Huston-Tillotson University (HT) nurtures a legacy of leadership and excellence in education that connects knowledge, power, passion, and values as part of its mission. Affiliated with both The United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, the institution has a student population of 1,034 undergraduates and offers associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. HT international students represent more than eighteen countries from China to Nigeria. The W.E.B. DuBois Honors Program provides students with a challenging curriculum above and beyond HT’s 21 areas of study. Major League Baseball great Jackie Robinson coached the men’s basketball team before he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, and he later served as a trustee of the college. Today HT teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as part of the Red River Athletic Conference. Historical districts and an evergrowing number of venues surround the 23-acre east Austin campus, which is within walking distance of downtown.

HT is recognized by the National Wildlife Federation and Second Nature for its sustainability efforts and commitment to the environment. The student organization Green is the New Black™ has won numerous awards for its environmental awareness initiatives. U N D E R G R A D UAT E ENROLLMENT 991

In schools to encourage healing. As if dealing with his mom’s death wasn’t hard enough, Sean had to adjust to a new home and new school. It was a lot to handle, so he struggled emotionally and academically. Lee from Communities In Schools helped Sean develop coping skills by finding positive outlets for his feelings. As his attitude improved, his grades followed—going from D’s to B’s. Now, he’s focused on football and a promising future. There are millions of at-risk kids like Sean who need a caring adult to help them stay in school and succeed in life. See how we help all kids succeed. | CommunitiesInSchools.org

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED? A. I had always wanted to go to the University of Oklahoma. Texas A&M was not even on my radar until second semester of my senior year of high school. My brother, who is two years older, went to A&M and loved it, but I never felt like it was the right place for me. During my senior year of high school, I went up to visit College Station and fell in love with the atmosphere of Texas A&M. Everyone was so friendly, caring, and genuine. I left that visit with a completely different perspective on it. I ultimately decided to go to Texas A&M and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Looking back at my four years there, I don’t think that I would change a thing.

Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY? A. The most challenging part of freshman year for me was balancing social life and school life. Starting your freshman year, everything is so new and fun, and it can be difficult sometimes to balance your education and your extracurriculars. Also, one of the most challenging parts for me was being completely independent for the first time in my life. I loved it because I felt a sense of freedom but it was also scary because it was so new.

Q. WHAT IS THE SINGLE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH INCOMING FRESHMAN? A. Get involved and do as much as possible. Looking back at my four years, there are some things that I wish I did, and I regret not doing them. College goes by so quickly, and I wish that I knew that going into my freshman year.

TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY–Central Texas (TAMU–CT) makes transferring into an undergraduate degree program uncomplicated, convenient, and affordable—on purpose. TAMU–CT is designed for people who have earned some college credits and are looking for a university that will help them turn those courses into an undergraduate degree. For those who have a graduate degree in mind, TAMU–CT offers graduate degrees in business administration, education, and arts and sciences. “Although we are the most broadly diverse university in the Texas A&M University System, the one thing all of our undergraduate students have in common is that they each began taking courses somewhere else,” says Marc Nigliazzo, university president. “Some earned credit in the military, others took classes part-time, and many either began with a community college or recently graduated from one. We are here to apply as much of their previous coursework as possible, so that they can finish what they started.” Undergraduate students choose from thirty bachelor’s degrees, sixteen of which are offered completely online. Graduate students may choose from among nineteen graduate degrees with nine completely online.

— BRIANA R. CORTEZ — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Q. HOW MANY SCHOOLS DID YOU APPLY TO AND WHY DID YOU SELECT THOSE? A. During my senior year of high school, I applied to five universities all in Texas. I knew I wanted to pursue a PA (Physician Assistant) career and practice medicine in Texas so attending a university that best aligned with my goals was important. I factored in all majors, where I could find volunteering/internship opportunities that aligned with my goals, and which university would allow me to grow not only as a student but as an individual as well!

Q. WHAT MADE YOU SAY “YES” TO THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED? A. I chose to attend UTRGV because of their traditions, career opportunities, the cultural atmosphere among students, faculty, and staff, and campus size! Because the university is on the smaller size, our classes had a maximum of fifty students and I always felt like an individual in class and not just another “number.”

Q. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR TEXANS LOOKING AT SCHOOLS NOW? A. The best advice I have would be to keep in mind that internship experiences and being part of an organization/volunteering are just as valuable as your courses. Find a university that matches your academic and professional goals! Nonetheless, have fun in college and attend school events with your friends if you have the chance. Sometimes classes may become stressful, so find family or friends to lean on for support.

— BRAXTON BERTHOT — Stephen F. Austin State University

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED? A. Stephen F. Austin was very generous, and I was offered a full-ride scholarship for academics. I considered other Texas universities, but the people I spoke with at SFA for my scholarships were so kind, and I couldn’t turn down a student-debt-free future. Being from the Nacogdoches area, I didn’t want to stay near home to go to school. However, SFA was 100 percent the right school for me, and I’m so glad I chose to stay.

and they are among the first to celebrate any successes of mine. Because I got to know my professors, I had opportunities for scholarship, presentation, and travel opportunities that I’m very grateful for.

Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CLASSES? A. Take some elective courses that scare you a little! If you can learn a new skill or do a project that will get you one step closer to a great job, take the course—even if it

scares you. You’ll be better for it.

Q. NOW THAT YOU’VE GRADUATED, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT COLLEGE? A. I miss being in the same city as my friend group and being able to hang out with them at times that I have to work now—like 2 p.m. on a Wednesday.

Q. WHEN YOU WERE CONSIDERING COLLEGE, WHAT WAS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU? A. I really struggled with the lack of structure in college compared to high school. In high school, you are in class all day, every day, and you go by pretty much the same schedule, too. In college, you may have a five-hour break between classes. It was weird having spare time at first, but you find those are the perfect gaps for studying, a workout, or a long lunch with friends.

Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY? A. I loved most of my upper-level courses, but the two that stand out are Employment Law and Investment Roundtable. Both professors made the courses incredibly engaging, and both courses really challenged me to think outside of the box for solutions to real-world problems, such as navigating the stock market and how to write professional legal memos.

Q. HOW WAS GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS OR INSTRUCTORS BENEFICIAL TO YOU? A. SFA has small class sizes that make it perfect to know professors in most classes. I got to know several of my professors on a personal level. Even after graduating, my former professors are still mentors to me, TEXAS COLLEGE GUIDE

TEXAS COLLEGE IS a creative, culturally diverse, inclusive academic environment that prepares students who aspire to be purpose-driven, financially secure, and marketable leaders. Founded in 1894 by ministers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Texas College prepares students with competencies in critical and creative thinking related to the knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in areas of study. Additionally, the college inspires intellectual, spiritual, ethical, moral, and social development, empowering graduates to engage in lifelong learning, leadership, and service. To address the mission, Texas College incorporates the core values of academic excellence, integrity, perseverance, social responsibility, tolerance, and community service. As a historically Black college, Texas College has provided accessible, quality education to all for more than 127 years. The college offers fourteen programs of study in the liberal arts and sciences, including twelve baccalaureate degree programs and two associate of arts programs. Students choose from one of four major divisions: business and social sciences, education, general studies and humanities, or natural and computational sciences. The college additionally meets the needs of nontraditional students with new distance learning options, designed for adult degree-completion while fulfilling work or familial obligations.

Rice University

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED? A. I chose Rice because it has amazing academics and consistently ranks highest for happiest students! Although I was a little hesitant about Rice at first (I had literally never set foot in Texas before I applied to Rice), I would absolutely make the same decision all over again.

Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY?

I thought about skipping class or zoning out, I reminded myself what a privilege it is to have the opportunity to be at a place like Rice. Don’t waste that opportunity!

Q. HOW WAS GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS OR INSTRUCTORS BENEFICIAL TO YOU (IF IT WAS)? A. I cannot recommend getting to know your professors enough. My dad is a professor, and that’s always something he’s instilled in me. If you’re in a bad spot in a class, whether you’re behind on assignments or don’t

understand the material, a good relationship with a professor can really help you out. When you need a letter of recommendation for the internship you’re passionate about, having professors who not only know you but actively want to see you succeed can be a huge difference-maker. When it came to applying for law school, I was fortunate to have several letter-writers who I’d built relationships with since my freshman year, and I think those letters were the boost I needed to secure acceptance to my top choice.

A. I didn’t expect to have such a challenge balancing the new social freedoms of college with my wellbeing. I never considered myself someone susceptible to peer pressure, but I found myself sacrificing sleep and health just to try to keep up socially with new friends. I don’t think I’ve had as many colds in my life as I did first semester of freshman year! Take care of yourself!

Q. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVORITE CLASSES AND WHY? A. My favorite class was the Forensics Practicum in the humanities department, which offers credit for participating on Rice’s debate team. It combined my love for argumentation, research, and philosophy with the opportunity to travel to far-flung cities and make friends at other schools. Through debate, I grew so much not only academically, but also as a teammate, classmate, and friend.

Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CLASSES? A. Maybe I was just a slacker in high school, but I came to college with the mindset that success in school was about earning a good grade while doing the minimum. I had to reshape my mindset and recognize that college is such a gift; you’re at an institution staffed by people who are experts in their fields, and you can take whatever classes you’re passionate about. Every time

Q. WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY? A. I struggled with adjusting to the quick pace of college classes. Not only was the content more difficult, but exams tested your comprehension on a much deeper level, which I just wasn’t prepared for. I spent my entire freshman year teaching myself how to study effectively on top of learning the material for my classes.

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR MAJOR?

too high to go to their office hours. I really regret that because I had some awesome professors who I wish I would’ve gotten to know better. Your professors are there for you, especially during their office hours, so take advantage of that.

Q. WHAT IS THE BEST SINGLE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH A FRESHMAN? A. Say “yes” more often than you say “no.”

Q. NOW THAT YOU’VE GRADUATED, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT COLLEGE? A. I miss Austin, which is my favorite city I have ever lived in. I miss my friends since we are now all over the place working on our careers. I miss being in the university marching band and traveling around the country, going to every football game. The thing I miss the most, though, is taking naps in the middle of the day… just because I could.

A. This is the truth: I was watching Parks and Recreation the summer before I applied to college and thought, “Wow, Leslie Knope is awesome. I’ll be her.” My first major, then, was in government. (Yes, it was that superficial of a decision!) However, a semester later, I realized I was wholly uninterested in the required government courses. At this point, I adopted a much more respected route to choosing a major and researched options online, spoke to upperclassmen studying various majors, and attended information sessions. I changed my major to communication studies at the start of my sophomore year because of the flexibility in post-graduation employment opportunities for communication majors and the nearly universal applicability of the material taught in communication courses.

Q. WHY IS IT GOOD TO GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS? A. The more you know your professors, the more you will connect with the material, and the more you will get out of the class and out of your time in college. Further, professors can connect you to job opportunities or write you a letter of recommendation for graduate programs. The easiest way to meet your professors is to go to their (virtual) office hours. I suggest preparing a couple questions about the professor and/or the course in advance and just letting the conversation flow from there. I did not speak to any of my professors my first two years in college because my anxiety was always

A minor in esports coaching teaches students about the industry within an ethical business framework. UST’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) is a twelvemonth program for students who earned another degree and want to transition into nursing. With a nursing shortage, nurses are in high demand.

Q. WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR AND HOW DID YOU DETERMINE THAT IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO FOCUS ON? A. I majored in advertising with a minor in business. It’s a weird feeling leaving the structure of high school and having the opportunity to choose your own path. I struggled at first, knowing that my end goal wasn’t going to be as clear as being a doctor or dentist. I ended up making a pros and cons list that prioritized creative majors. In the end, I landed on advertising because I knew it would be applicable in many different professions.

Q. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF FRESHMAN YEAR (ACADEMIC OR SOCIAL)? A. I distinctly remember going home for Thanksgiving, almost having finished my first semester. So much had changed since I’d spent that first night in my dorm in August. I was proud of myself for being on my own, managing school, new friends, and literally everything else in between. Oh, I was super excited to see my family too!

Q. WHAT IS THE SINGLE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH INCOMING FRESHMAN? A. Change is okay! Plans change, passions change, just try to take it all in. College is a time to learn and grow into adulthood. Freshman year throws a lot at you, but don’t be afraid of mistakes. Just remember to know your worth and potential because everything happens for a reason.

— COURTNEY ST. PIERRE — Texas A&M University

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED? A. I applied to six colleges: four in-state and two out-of-state. I thought it was important to have options but not too many options. I ended up picking a large public university in Texas and am so glad I did! When I went to visit the campus, there was an energy about the place I had never experienced before. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and the football games were insanely fun! Also, the business program is one of the top-ranked, so that was the cherry on top.

Q. WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY? A. The hardest part about freshman year was figuring out how to balance school with all the organizations I was involved in. I was in two or three organizations and in a pretty hard major, so figuring out how to study and when to study was hard. But, don’t fret—you will figure it out. Everyone has their own way of being involved on campus and making sure you’re getting your studies done!

Q. NOW THAT YOU’VE GRADUATED, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT COLLEGE? A. I miss so much about college. Getting to live in a dorm (sounds weird but I promise you’ll miss it, too!), eating cheap food because you’re broke, late study nights with friends, getting to meet so many different people…. Soak it up because it goes by so fast! Then you have to become an adult!

Office Hours are Your Time TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES TO GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS

I

BY S C OT T R AY

n my ten years of teaching freshman writing at the university level, I’ve learned a thing or two about where college newcomers go astray. It’s a confusing new world that works a lot differently from high school. To add to that, many students are first-generation college-goers. While some universities have excellent first-year orientation classes, the academy can be a confusing bureaucratic land with norms that are far from intuitive. The best thing any student, of any year, in any class, can do is to get to know their professors. Professors can be intimidating at first, but almost every one is invested in the success of their students. As in any population, there may be some professors who are real stinkers, but the vast majority of professors are doing what they do because they have a love for knowledge, and a love for sharing that knowledge with others. Many freshman classes are large, held in huge lecture rooms. Often, at the end of class there may be a line to speak to a professor. This can be a daunting prospect—waiting in a line to speak to the professor, something you may already be unsure about, with the added complication of having other students overhear what you are saying. Never fear—there’s another way to get some facetime with your prof: office hours. Most departments require every professor to have a certain number of office hours every week. At first glance, this might also seem like a less than ideal scenario. You might be afraid to disturb a professor when they are holding their office hours. Don’t they need to get work done?

IN REALITY, “OFFICE HOURS” ARE TIME SET ASIDE EVERY WEEK WHERE THE PROFESSOR IS EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE TO THEIR STUDENTS. “Open Office Hours” would be a less confusing term, but no one asked me when we were naming this convention. Nevertheless, this is the time when you can go and ask a professor any questions you might have about the course. You can even pop in just to say hello. Every professor does office hours a little differently, but the intent is the same across the board. This is a time when your professor is expecting students to come to him or her with questions, concerns, or conversation. Some professors have a completely open-door policy. Some would prefer you let them know you are going to come by. Some have a very strict sign-up policy. Some have office hours by appointment. Some hold their office hours in their office, and some hold them in a more communal space on campus, like a coffee shop. (This is the method I always preferred.) Your professor’s preference should be listed on their syllabus, usually right up top with other important information about the course. I couldn’t tell you how many hours I’ve sat in my office or in a coffee shop or, during the pandemic, on an open Zoom meeting, without students taking advantage of this time. No student is required to take advantage of this resource, of course, but a recurring theme when I would survey students about this is that they didn’t even know attending office hours was an option. Or, if they did, they didn’t really understand how it might be advantageous The most obvious advantage of office hours is oneon-one time to ask your professor any questions you have about the material or upcoming assignments. Professors will not usually want to read your paper in advance, but they would be happy to discuss what you are writing about and help you work through your ideas or suggest material that would be helpful. Office hours are also a great time to discuss graded work so you can understand where you are doing well and what you might need to improve upon. A less apparent advantage of office hours is that it simply lets your professor get to know you beyond an anonymous face in a lecture hall. All professors strive to be completely objective in their grading, but it’s

always good to have a personal connection with your teachers. You might need a letter of recommendation for an on-campus job, an internship, or for graduate school. If your professor remembers you beyond a number in the gradebook, they are more likely to write you a recommendation, and if they recall things about you, the recommendation is more likely to be persuasive and effective. Another perk that comes with knowing your professor is that you’ll have a rapport with him or her in case anything unexpected happens. College is a time of hard deadlines, but sometimes things out of our control come up: there may be deaths in the family, illness and injury, technological difficulties. Most professors are accommodating of these kinds of events, but people naturally tend to extend more courtesy when they already know someone. There will probably be at least a few occasions in college when you fall behind in a course or on an assignment. It could be that outside of class you have other things going on that are interfering with your studies. It could be that the course is just exceptionally challenging. Over the years, I’ve had students come to me asking for extensions or accommodations when it is too late in the semester to do any good. If you feel yourself falling behind, it is so much better to act fast and confide in your professor. When I know a student is struggling, I can get together with them and come up with a plan to make sure the student will have time to make things up while there is still space in the semester. This is another good occasion to take advantage of office hours. If you are struggling, if you need some more time with an assignment, go and speak to your professor. It’s always better to do this sooner rather than later. Don’t talk to the professor two weeks after something is due—it may be too late at that point. Don’t wait until the week of finals—professors have deadlines for turning in grades as well. They want to help each student as much as they can, but there are logistical limits to how helpful they can be. If you are taking advantage of office hours, the odds are you will stay more on track with the class in the first place.

One Degree to Make a World of Difference AT ST. MARY’S UNIVERSIT Y

At St. Mary’s University, one degree can change everything. One degree of change in our thinking or actions can make all the difference in our education. One conversation can change our perspective and shape our vocation. One vision in service to others can make a better world. It takes one degree to make a world of difference.
