ONE RED RAIDER PLANS TO USE HIS LEG-UP TO PROTECT VULNERABLE ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITIES.
Isaac Smith, a junior in the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University is studying information technology with a focus in cybersecurity. Smith would not be where he is today, though, without the Red Raider Guarantee, a grant created by Texas Tech to increase access to higher education.
“After grades, I think students’ biggest stress is financial,” he said. “It weighs heavily on us. Even working two jobs, a lot of students just have enough to break even. That’s a stressful way to live for four years.”
Smith said the ability to focus on his studies and not stress about finances has allowed him to excel in his academic career and work toward his goal of becoming an FBI agent working in cybersecurity.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN State University (SFA) was founded in 1821 as a teacher college in Nacogdoches, Texas’s oldest town. Today, SFA is celebrating one hundred years, and has grown into a regional institution comprising six colleges: business, education, fine arts, forestry and agriculture, liberal and applied arts, and sciences and mathematics.
SFA offers more than eighty bachelor’s degrees, forty master’s degrees, and four doctoral degrees. Class sizes are small, which ensures students receive personalized attention from faculty members who act as mentors.
University faculty and staff don’t believe in limiting student potential or interests. That’s why SFA continues to add state-of-the-art buildings, new academic programs, new athletic teams, new study areas, and eateries—all to make sure Lumberjacks get the most out of their college experience.
Because student support is a primary concern, SFA created the Lumberjack Wellness Network to provide holistic well-being services, and the Academic Assistance and Resource Center helps students stay on top in tougher courses. SFA’s newest “get started early” program, Aspire, offers incoming students an inclusive small-group orientation experience, and more than two hundred clubs and organizations ensure everyone has a place.
SFA athletic teams compete in eighteen intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level and hold 103 team championships, two national team championships, and one national championship. SFA cheer and dance teams hold 32 national championships.

Texas Talk CO L LEGE
Q. WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR AND HOW DID YOU DETERMINE THAT IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO FOCUS ON?
A. I was a Game Design major during college and growing up, video games were how my family spent quality time together. It was always a big part of my life and I found that quite a lot of these games had meaningful messages that you discovered while playing the game. As a result, I really wanted to be a part of designing and creating content that could spread a positive message to the next generation in a fun and entertaining way.
Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY?
A. The most challenging part of freshman year for me was adjusting to establishing my own schedule. Growing up, I was used to not having to cook meals for myself or even using a washer and dryer and now to be fully by myself and making sure I was responsible for myself was a little overwhelming. Plus, being away from home that long for the first time is a big adjustment period, but it definitely helps to make friends during those first couple of weeks.
Q. ANY TIPS FOR BALANCING ACADEMIC AND EXTRACURRICULARS?
A. Make a schedule! Planning ahead is your best friend and is a good habit to set up anyways once you get to college. That way you can portion your time accordingly and make sure you have time to work and relax. All that being said, make sure that you’re flexible as well. If you stick too close to the schedule and it deviates a little bit, it can cause you to feel bad about not keeping to it. Think of the schedule more as a guideline.
Q. NOW THAT YOU’VE GRADUATED, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT COLLEGE?
A. The biggest thing I miss for me is the structure that college gives you. Once you graduate and you’re looking for jobs, it’s up to you to decide your schedule for the day and when to schedule free time. I’m a big fan of planning and having a set itinerary for the week, so having to do that for myself can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Once you start doing it though, and you make sure to ask your friends and family for help, it gets a lot easier.
Q. IF YOU HAD TO DO COLLEGE ALL OVER AGAIN, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD APPROACH DIFFERENTLY?
A. Definitely take advantage of all of the career counseling and job fairs that are available during my time at college. Once you graduate, those connections that you built during projects and at these events become really useful when you want to land your first full time job. Set a little bit of your free time aside to start going out to meet people. You really never know which one of the connections you make could help start you down your chosen career path.

Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY?
A. Balancing homework/projects and a routine for myself was the biggest challenge. It was difficult for me to make sure I was eating as nutritiously as possible, getting enough sleep (didn’t really get that one down until I graduated!), while also making time for extracurriculars and new friends.
Q. WHEN YOU WERE CONSIDERING COLLEGE, WHAT WAS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?
A. I was an Austin Community College student for two years before I was a Bobcat, and honestly it was most important to me that that credits I had gained at ACC transferred over. I was also looking for somewhere with a good Graphic Design program, which Texas State has!
Q. WHAT IS THE SINGLE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH INCOMING FRESHMAN?
A. If you’re anything like me, you put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect during this time. You’re not going to be perfect. College is the best time to screw up, change your major, change your major again, or decide you want to get a nose piercing (you can always take it out later). Find your people and have fun.
— RACHEL HUDSON — Texas State UniversityQ. IF YOU HAD TO DO COLLEGE ALL OVER AGAIN, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD APPROACH DIFFERENTLY?
A. I would try to not be so worried about the future. I spent a lot of time stressing over where I would get a job after graduating, and I think it’s super important to be as present as you can during your college years, and soak up as much as possible, because they’re really great years full of a lot of growth, laughs, new friends, and 99 cent margaritas at Grins.
A. My major was Communication Design. Because of the time that ACC allowed me to have to explore different routes, I was able to recognize in my intro to liberal arts classes (Printmaking, Creative Writing, Sculpture, Drawing) that I loved to make art, and I also loved to solve problems in creative ways, which is exactly what design is! That is when I started to look for schools, and Texas State has one of the best programs for Graphic Design.
Q.WHAT WERE YOUR FAVORITE CLASSES AND WHY?
A. Because I was a transfer student, I was able to skip a lot of core classes that I already had done, and jump directly into my chosen major track, Communication Design. I really enjoyed my Typography classes, where I studied letterforms and how to design with typography in mind. I also fell in love with my Book Design class and the art of making a book!

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED?
A. Growing up in Austin I always expected to end up attending UT. However, as the time to make a decision got closer, my twin sister and I started to look into other schools. I think we both were ready for a change of scenery. It was always the plan for us to attend the same school, so when we both got accepted to Texas A&M it immediately made it to the top of our list. We also have to give some credit to our aunt, who went to Texas A&M—she did a great job recruiting us. Choosing to attend Texas A&M has easily been the best decision I have made.
Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CLASSES?
A. There is definitely an adjustment period when you get to your first college classes. Classes are way bigger than in high school, so you sometimes feel like a little fish in a big pond. To get the most out of your classes you need to be consistent. Going to every class ensures that you are up to date with any and all assignments. It is easy to get behind and doing so causes a domino effect of inconveniences. Also, reach out to your classmates. Having friends in your classes keeps you in the loop and can hold you accountable to go to class and stay on top of your schoolwork.
Q. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF FRESHMAN YEAR?
A. That would have to be the Aggies beating LSU in seven overtimes at Kyle Field. The atmosphere inside Kyle Field is always electric, but this game was better. It was the first fall game, so the weather was perfect, and the 12th Man showed up like I had never seen—101,500 people in attendance. Two friends and I were walking out of the stadium when they overturned the last call of the game. We turned around and watched from the standing room as the Ags tied it up on the last play of the game. What we thought was going to be one or two overtimes of standing, ended up being seven. Seeing the student section erupt when we won will stick with me forever, and so will the feeling of rushing the field with the rest of the 12th Man.

A. The most important thing to me was financial aid and scholarship opportunities offered to help my future studies. I had graduated from high school in a percentage that would’ve automatically accepted me into any state university. However, my main concern was to attend a school that would be affordable for me and my family in the long run. UH granted me a scholarship when I applied and extended financial aid year-round. As I simultaneously worked full-time to pay the remaining of my academic expenses, I was able to complete my degree without debt!

A. Get out of your comfort zone! Join as many campus organizations and clubs as you can juggle. Joining them can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will have in college. Not only will you develop important skills, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, but it is also where you will build relationships with other students in your field.
A. There are many little things I miss about college such as eating pizza rolls for three meals a day (and not feeling bad about it) and seeing my friends on a regular basis. However, the one thing I miss most is the infectious energy you feel when you’re on campus. Participating in a community with other students who share the same values and hopes is truly inspiring. There is nothing like being in an academic environment that encourages you to reach your goals and dreams every day.

Q. HOW MANY SCHOOLS DID YOU APPLY TO AND WHY DID YOU SELECT THOSE?
A. During my senior year of high school, I applied to five universities all in Texas. I knew I wanted to pursue a PA (Physician Assistant) career and practice medicine in Texas so attending a university that best aligned with my goals was important. I factored in all majors, where I could find volunteering/internship opportunities that aligned with my goals, and which university would allow me to grow not only as a student but as an individual as well!
Q. WHAT MADE YOU SAY “YES” TO THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED?
A. I chose to attend UTRGV because of their traditions, career opportunities, the cultural atmosphere among students, faculty, and staff, and campus size! Because the university is on the smaller size, our classes had a maximum of fifty students and I always felt like an individual in class and not just another “number.”
Q. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR TEXANS LOOKING AT SCHOOLS NOW?
A. The best advice I have would be to keep in mind that internship experiences and being part of an organization/volunteering are just as valuable as your courses. Find a university that matches your academic and professional goals! Nonetheless, have fun in college and attend school events with your friends if you have the chance. Sometimes classes may become stressful, so find family or friends to lean on for support.

Q. HOW DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE YOU ATTENDED?
A. Stephen F. Austin was very generous, and I was offered a full-ride scholarship for academics. I considered other Texas universities, but the people I spoke with at SFA for my scholarships were so kind, and I couldn’t turn down a student-debt-free future. Being from the Nacogdoches area, I didn’t want to stay near home to go to school. However, SFA was 100 percent the right school for me, and I’m so glad I chose to stay.
Q. WHEN YOU WERE CONSIDERING COLLEGE, WHAT WAS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?
A. I really struggled with the lack of structure in college compared to high school. In high school, you are in class all day, every day, and you go by pretty much the same schedule, too. In college, you may have a five-hour break between classes. It was weird having spare time at first, but you find those are the perfect gaps for studying, a workout, or a long lunch with friends.
Q. WHAT ENDED UP BEING THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND WHY?
A. I loved most of my upper-level courses, but the two that stand out are Employment Law and Investment Roundtable. Both professors made the courses incredibly engaging, and both courses really challenged me to think outside of the box for solutions to real-world problems, such as navigating the stock market and how to write professional legal memos.
Q. HOW WAS GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS OR INSTRUCTORS BENEFICIAL TO YOU?
A. SFA has small class sizes that make it perfect to know professors in most classes. I got to know several of my professors on a personal level. Even after graduating, my former professors are still mentors to me, and they are among the first to celebrate
any successes of mine. Because I got to know my professors, I had opportunities for scholarship, presentation, and travel opportunities that I’m very grateful for.
Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CLASSES?
A. Take some elective courses that scare you a little! If you can learn a new skill or do a project that will get you one step closer to a great job, take the course—even if it scares you. You’ll be better for it.
— BRAXTON BERTHOT — Stephen F. Austin State UniversityQ. NOW THAT YOU’VE GRADUATED, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT COLLEGE?
A. I miss being in the same city as my friend group and being able to hang out with them at times that I have to work now—like 2 p.m. on a Wednesday.
