DENTON’S RICH PAST AND VIBRANT PRESENT COLLIDE WITH CAPTIVATING MUSEUMS, NOTABLE HOMES, AND HISTORIC SITES.
The Denton County Courthouse and the museum housed inside are an iconic and anchoring piece of Denton history. Built in 1896, the courthouse embodies Texas with its Austin pink granite, Denton limestone, and sandstone from the Pecos region. It was fully restored in 2004 using original blueprints of architect W.C. Dodson.
Today, the museum houses exhibits that showcase Denton history, Western heritage, and more, and hosts lectures and community organized events.
A vast 32-acre city park situated behind the Denton Civic Center, Quakertown invites visitors and residents to take a stroll, catch a show at the amphitheater, explore the playground, and soak up the Texas fresh air. The park was named to honor and remember the predominately Black community that called the Quakertown neighborhood home in the late 19th and early 20th century. Today, the Texas Historical Commission recognizes the park as a historical place.
This award-winning hometurned-museum is steeped with the stories of families that made Quakertown a vibrant community in the late 19th and early 20th century. Inside, explore exhibits that honor their legacy and see the papers and medical supplies of Dr. Edwin D. Moten, Denton’s first African American doctor.
Step back in time at the BaylessSelby House Museum, where the story of Denton at the turn-of-the-century comes to life in this Victorian-style house museum. Located at Denton County Historical Park, the house transports you back in
time while you take in the styles of the era from an Eastlake-style adult bedroom suite to a music room with the E. Gabler & Bro. grand piano. en, peruse the garden grounds and nd yourself in a time long-gone. Museum admission is free and within walking distance of downtown, the Quakertown House Museum, and the Welcome Center.

An iconic locale, Dan’s Silverleaf (formerly Dan’s Bar) is as synonymous with Denton as barbecue is to Texas—and for good reason. Housed in the former grand movie house built in 1949, the art deco-style Campus Theatre is one of the oldest community theaters in North Texas and the spot for yearround productions from Theatre Denton. Catch a spellbinding performance from inside the Point Bank Auditorium or learn about the ongoing classes and youth productions held at the iconic theater.
If these walls could talk! Located near Downtown Denton Square, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center is revered as the art engine of the city and is the home of Greater Denton Arts Council. The former site of Denton’s steam power plant, the building was renovated in the 1980s to become an arts anchor for the region. Now, the center houses two large galleries, an art studio, dance rehearsal hall, and sculpture garden that welcome everything from film festivals to traveling exhibits. Festival Hall, a 5,000-sqaure-foot space, is the centerpiece of this modern-day venue with a surprising industrial past.
Denton beckons creativity, and the city itself is a canvas for vibrant murals and public art. The histories and faces of five Black women Denton residents come alive in one of Denton’s newest murals painted by celebrated artist Dan Black. For the brew buffs, “How to Brew Beer,” located on the side of the Bearded Monk and painted by Roy Warren Lunt, illustrates a humorous take on brewing. Located on Oak Street, historic Denton comes to life in the Sherman Building Mural. Artist and educator Christian Reid depicts a watercolor scene of the iconic Denton Courthouse before the turn of the century. Tucked away on Locust Street, Dan Black’s B&O Service Mural features a grayscale woman and a nearby European robin by the same artist.
