McKinney has a rich and diverse spirit in part because of the history that shaped it. Dating back to 1848 when the city was founded, McKinney’s history includes many stories about the people who lived here, the work they did, and the places they called home.
Over the years, city leadership’s vision in preserving our history has intentionally crafted a town that offers the best of the old with a vibrant present and a very promising future.
Learn more about McKinney’s stories and architecture during a guided historic walking tour, offered monthly.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts lets you immerse yourself in yesteryear through art and antiques, as well as sip afternoon tea and embark on a guided tour. Special programming and decorations during key holidays throughout the year add an extra layer of enjoyment to a planned visit.
Nestled among towering shade trees on 2.5 acres, the village consists of six homes, a church, general store, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, and a replica one-room schoolhouse. Be transported to the era between 1854 and 1940 … McKinney’s early years. Marvel at artifacts, including an ice cream freezer museum featuring the World’s Largest Collection of Ice Cream Freezers, and interact with volunteers in period costumes who bring the past to life, while a year-round, weekend farmer’s market provides the opportunity to keep the village vital to the community for decades to come. Hear wedding bells in your future? The village is also a popular spot to tie the knot—book your wedding here today!
Step inside the circa-1911 Federal Building to discover historical artifacts, photos, maps, and a variety of documents that offer a glimpse into the people of Collin County’s past. Admission is free and you can schedule a guided tour in advance online for even deeper insight.
The Silo Project: Internationallyacclaimed Australian artist Guido van Helten created the 100-foot-tall expansive mural on the cement grain silos and grain elevator at McKinney’s Historic Flour Mill. Learn more about this project when you scan the QR code.
Whether you’re looking to collect art from established artists or learn the skills to create your own masterpieces, McKinney has it all. Find inspiration—and maybe something new to hang about the sofa— at one of several local establishments. Create your own gallery crawl with visits to The Martin Place , The Cove , LAST Art Gallery , Kim Guthrie Art Gallery & Studio , and McKinney Art Gallery Meanwhile, Jump Into Art Studios , McKinney Art House , Glaze Ceramic Studio , Walls of Clay , and LAST Art Gallery let you tap into your creative side, from painting to pottery and everything in between.
Prepare to snap a ton of photos as you embark on a walking tour of downtown McKinney’s many murals and works of public art. A collaboration between Visit McKinney and Jump Into Art Studios, these expert-led tours take place at least once a month and provide insight into a variety of works, including information about the artists and the stories behind the art.
Forget the old adage that everything’s bigger in Texas—at least while you explore downtown McKinney keeping your eyes aimed downward. Seek out 80-plus Tiny Doors, a collection of miniature masterpieces with stories to tell, but let your imagination run wild and create your own narrative for who (or what) lives behind each. Learn more about this project when you scan the QR code.
Now switch gears, look toward the sky, and think big again. The Monarchs of McKinney consist of eight oversized steel butterfly sculptures “frozen” mid-air, eight feet above the sidewalks of the Downtown McKinney Historic District. Not only are they breathtakingly beautiful, they represent the importance of the Monarch butterfly to the local ecosystem.
From plays and musicals to live bands, creativity comes to life once the curtain rises and the spotlight shines on performers ready to entertain and maybe even provoke a deep thought or two. Best of all, there’s no bad seat in the house. Before your show starts, make sure to check out the beautifully curated art collection dotting the walls of the center.
