FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Youths Raise Bullying Resource Awareness, Funds For Suicide Prevention Training Suicide is the second most common cause of death in Canadian youth. Recent research from the Journal of Adolescent Health shows that bullying is a potential risk factor for adolescent depression and suicide for both the bullied and the bully. Milton youths are hoping to make a difference. MILTON, ONTARIO (July 2, 2013) – Milton Stands Strong Against Bullying (MSSAB) is holding an event to increase awareness of, and access to, crisis resources and training on July 6, 2013 at the Milton Fair Grounds from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. One of the training opportunities MSSAB members will be seeking is safeTALK. The workshop will teach participants how to recognize when someone may be thinking of suicide, how to engage that person in a brief conversation about suicide, and how to connect him or her to appropriate resources. “Young people, and the adults who care about them, need to learn how to recognize when someone may be thinking of suicide and how to get them to the right kind of help,” said Wallis Balog, suicide prevention consultant and trainer. The event will feature Milton’s 2014 Olympian hopeful, Travis Gerrits, who will be in attendance to sign autographs. Attendees can also enjoy speakers, musical performances, demonstrations, and a silent auction. Admission is $2 at the gate. Children aged four and under are free.
