04 MASTER WHEEL

J

ames Underwood was named Wheel Master for 2022 in April 2023.

James has been driving for TMC for 22 years and has accumulated 2.7 million miles driven. But he doesn’t want to rest on his laurels. Instead, he hopes to keep driving for TMC: “My goal is to try to reach three million, then four million—I’d like to try to get five million miles,” he says. James drove line haul for 17 years and was a trainer for 10 years. For the last five years, he has driven a dedicated route. James appreciates the camaraderie among TMC drivers and enjoys helping his fellow drivers succeed on the road. “My favorite thing about being a driver for TMC is helping other drivers with their loads if they have a question,” he says.

The Wheel Master is a prestigious award given to one TMC driver each year. Winners must have been previously selected as a Driver of the Quarter during their time with TMC. Factors such as nominations from fellow employees, safe driving record, years of service, and excellence in customer service are also considered. The Wheel Masters are recognized at a yearly luncheon to honor their years of safe driving and allow this remarkable group of drivers a chance to share stories and build camaraderie. “It means a lot to know that I was chosen to be the next Wheel Master,” James says. “I enjoy driving, and TMC’s always been good to me.”

Congratulations, James Underwood, on being named Wheel Master for 2022!

DRIVER OF THE

QUARTER WILLIAM ‘GRAY’ DOUGHERTY William has been with TMC for 24 years and has been a professional driver since 1984. “I have done everything in terms of truck driving and have found a home at TMC,” says Dougherty. With over 3 million safe driving miles William has proven that he truly has what it takes to stand out among an already impressive fleet of drivers. William credits some of his success to this quote, “Think of the car in front of you as your family and the car behind you as a police officer.” This is a quote that William thinks about and pushes him to be the best he can be.

Q1

DAVID EMERSON David is a linehaul driver who has driven for TMC for 12 years, with over 40 total years of experience as a professional truck driver. “I’ve enjoyed my career,” he says. “It’s gotten me out and about.” David credits his success at TMC in part to his wealth of professional driving experience and the training he has received throughout his career. “I’ve had a lot of training focusing on safety,” he says. “That’s helped me to be successful.” With more than 1.4 million safe miles, David values safety more than anything when he drives. “Never get in a hurry,” he advises. “Keep track of your space and visibility, and if it’s not safe, shut it down.”

David lives in Fort Worth, TX, with his wife of 45 years. They have three children and six grandchildren whom he enjoys spending time with.

TMC DESTINATION: EXCELLENCE NEWSLETTER

DRIVER

APPRECIATION WEEK 2023

TMC’s drivers are the heart of our company, and their hard work is the backbone of everything we’ve been able to accomplish over the last 50-plus years. Every year, we look forward to Driver Appreciation Week because it gives us an opportunity to say thank you for all of their hard work. Each TMC location hosted special activities during Driver Appreciation Week 2023 to celebrate our incredible drivers. At the Des Moines office, employees participated in truckbacking and truck-cleaning contests to get a taste of life behind the wheel. TMC also held giveaways for drivers, hosted food trucks, and catered lunches at our terminals. Driver Appreciation Week gives all TMC employees a chance to acknowledge the hard work drivers do every day of the year and say a heartfelt thank you—and 2023’s celebration was no different. Thank you to all of our drivers for going the extra mile every day for our customers. We appreciate your dedication! 2023 REVIEW

YEARS OF EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP

O ctober was Employee Ownership Month, a celebration of employee-owned companies across the US. It also marked the tenth anniversary of TMC’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). TMC is proud to be employee-owned, and we believe that our ESOP demonstrates our commitment to excellence and profitability, and it lets all employee-owners share in the company’s growth. TMC’s ESOP began in 2013, thanks to late founder and CEO Harrold Annett, who wanted to maintain TMC’s unique culture of excellence and allow TMC employees to benefit from the hard work they put into the company. We’re proud to carry on Harrold’s legacy through TMC’s employee ownership. TMC has seen tremendous growth over the last ten years, and we believe it is partly due to the employee-owner mindset that grew out of the ESOP. As data business analyst Julio Avila says, “Working for a paycheck is one thing; working with a vested interest in the company’s growth and success is another. This level of commitment stems from humble leadership and leading by example, qualities embodied by Harrold Annett.”

09 NEW TMC TERMINAL UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN SOUTH CAROLINA C onstruction began in 2023 on TMC’s new terminal in Columbia, South Carolina. TMC has had a presence in the Columbia area since 1998, and the new 44-acre location will combine logistics, operations, and maintenance in one state-of-the-art facility. Construction is still in progress, but the new driver training yard is already open and in use. We can’t wait to see what 2024 holds for this new campus that will serve as a hub for operations in the Southeast and help TMC better serve our customers. Check out our website for more updates as construction continues.

TMC Logistics is an asset-based logistics operation providing solutions that enhance the optimal level of capability to our customers, without compromising on service. TMC LOGISTICS UPDATE T

MC’s Logistics division continued to grow in 2023, with overall volume increasing by 10%. Remarkably, the division saw 140% growth in asset volume and a 360% increase in its less-thantruckload business.

Mike Crist Senior Vice President of Logistics

TMC’s motto of ‘Destination: Excellence’ means we are always moving forward with unmatched ownership and resiliency. 2023 was not an easy year for our industry, by any means, but we persevered through the challenges we faced. The other day, I found myself reading an internal blog with excerpts from emails written by TMC’s late founder, Harrold Annett. I never got the chance to meet Mr. Annett, but I feel his powerful presence in so much of what we do. One of his emails was sent to the company after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It was a confident message of strength and unity, and it was clear in his words that this company would prevail despite those difficult times—and it did. With TMC's spirit, Logistics delivered overall business growth in 2023, while increasing efficiency, and completed some major initiatives inside technology and training. Across divisions of the company, we worked together on a grander scale than ever to prove our resilient and adaptive operations model. I am very encouraged by our momentum going into 2024.

Logistics was also the first division of TMC to adopt MasterMind, a new, integrated transportation management system that will allow us to continue to innovate and better serve our customers. As of the end of 2023, MasterMind is in use in the Logistics and Excess divisions of the company, and work is in progress to implement it across all of TMC. Throughout 2023, Logistics also made significant investments in systems and training programs to enhance the employee experience. These measures will ensure that TMC can find, keep, and grow the best talent so that our Logistics business can expand its unique position in the brokerage industry.

EMPLOYEE OWNER OF THE QUARTER

Robert Pease, Logistics Project Manager

Q1

Robert started his career with TMC in May 2018 as a Logistics Sales Representative (LSR) in Bentonville, Arkansas (AR) office. From his first day, Robert knew TMC was different from any other Transportation Company. Robert says, “TMC takes time to train people, build ethics in business, and do things the right way.” The impact that Robert has on the success of the SpecOps division, the influence Robert has on the growth individual sales professionals, and the entire TMC Network are only a few of the reasons that lead to Robert Pease being named the Employee Owner of the First Quarter of 2023. Congratulations, Robert!

Chris Essig, Carrier Sales Specialist Chris started with TMC in August 2015 as a Logistics Sales Representative (LSR) and transitioned into the Carrier Sales Specialist (CSS) role eight months later. Since his first day in the CSS role, Chris has worked in the Chicago, Saint Louis, and Michigan regions, which are notoriously tough areas. As Chris grew in the CSS role, he adapted to add value and to meet the needs of the carriers in his regions. Chris says, “Here at TMC, you’re not just a number, you are part of a family.” Chris’ personification of TMC’s ESOP principles and leading by example are just a few reasons why Chris Essig was named TMC’s Employee Owner of the Second Quarter of 2023. Congratulations, Chris!

Q2

Jenny Wood, Logistics Specialist Team Lead

Q3

As Logistic Sales Training Team Lead in the Columbia, SC, office, Jenny has made an enormous impact in her four years with the company. She’s become an invaluable part of the Logistics Training team, taking on any project that needs to get done. In 2023, she was responsible for building and running the logistics summer internship program, creating an experience that was more tailored to the logistics field and more rewarding for the interns. Jenny truly exemplifies TMC’s values. She does everything with integrity, she cares deeply about quality even in the smallest tasks, and she’s always ready to reevaluate and improve processes. She truly brings out the best in her teammates. Congratulations, Jenny!

Alexis Barnett, Logistics Specialist Team Lead When she started at TMC in the Jacksonville, FL, Logistics office in 2019, Alexis was a carrier sales specialist (CSS). Shane Conaway, Senior Manager, Professional Development, says, “Alexis’s contributions to the Logistics Division in 2023 have been nothing short of spectacular. She epitomizes TMC’s core values: integrity, hard work, dedication, and quality. She has efficiently and effectively executed every objective at the highest level and has taken the entire Logistics Training team’s reputation for operational excellence to a much higher level in 2023. It has been an unbelievable privilege to serve alongside Alexis this year, and I am looking forward to many more to come.” Congratulations, Alexis!

TMC WINS TMSA TRAILBLAZER AWARD

In June of 2023, TMC (alongside Luminaries Consulting) was honored with the Transportation Marketing & Sales Association’s Trailblazers Award during the 2023 ELEVATE Conference in Savannah, GA, to honor our Growth Account Acceleration Program (GAAP). TMC worked with Sara Black and Holly LaBoda, Partners and Co-Founders of Luminaries Consulting—a strategy-based company helping organizations get, keep, and grow their ideal clients—to launch the GAAP with a group of high-potential account managers from TMC’s network. The program was an opportunity for growth within managing operations and a chance to improve the approach to account management. Luminaries Consulting’s expertise with logistics and sales training made them the perfect partner for TMC.    “Education is nothing if you don’t apply it. And I think the way they push for folks to apply this and put the marker out there to grow these accounts was fantastic,” explains Keith Chyla, Vice President of Logistics Sales and Account Management at TMC.

A huge thank you and congratulations to Luminaries Consulting and everyone involved in the project at TMC! We are proud of the partnership and look forward to its continued success.

NATIONAL INTERN DAY AT THE STUDENT TRAINING CENTER TMC celebrated National Intern Day in July with a cookout and awards for our interns at the TMC Student Training Center in Ames. Internships allow students to gain real-world experience and job skills that will benefit them in their careers. They’re also an important way for companies to build relationships with high-performing employees early in their careers. In fact, many long-tenured TMC employees began as interns. “TMC has had an internship program for over thirty years but it’s only in the last six years that we have focused so heavily on growing it,” says Kenneth Kyle, VP of Education & Campus Collaboration. “TMC’s focus on quality, integrity, and continuous improvement helps students learn about themselves while at the same time learning about the industry. Our office culture and our business ethics are second to none, and this is something that is valued and appreciated.”

SAMMY SMITH TO MOVE TO JR MOTORSPORTS IN 2024

n 2023, TMC Transportation was once again proud to partner with NASCAR Xfinity driver Sammy Smith. Sammy’s last two seasons included six top-five finishes, 15 top-10 finishes, and a win at Phoenix Raceway, making him the youngest NXS winner in the track’s history. In November, JR Motorsports announced that Sammy will be joining their driver lineup in 2024, with partnership from Pilot Flying J Racing, TMC Transportation, and the Allstate Peterbilt Group. “We are excited to continue our motorsports partnership with Sammy as he joins the JRM race team,” says Jason Webb, TMC’s EVP of asset management. “Having been a partner with JRM for several years, we know they are a firstclass organization. Sammy will be joining a team that will provide him with the resources and tools to dominate on the track and continue to develop to reach his full potential.” The future looks bright for this promising young driver, especially with the support of the JRM team and TMC.

TMC RECOGNIZED AS A MILITARY FRIENDLY EMPLOYER

T

MC was once again honored in 2023 with the Military Friendly Employer designation from Viqtory Media. TMC is proud to say that 36 percent of our employees are military veterans, and we believe that these men and women’s experience, skills, and strength of character are all key to the success of our company. What’s more, we want to do our part to help

military veterans find satisfying careers that allow them to use the skills and knowledge they developed during their service in the armed forces. That’s why we are committed to helping veterans access their GI Bill benefits while they are completing TMC’s driver training program and creating a workplace where veterans and their experience are truly valued.

THE HARROLD ANNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Congratulations to the winner of the 2023 Harrold Annett Memorial Scholarship, Layne Collum! Layne is the daughter of Jeff Collum, who works in TMC’s customer service department. She graduated from Iowa State University in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health, and she is now pursuing her doctorate in physical therapy from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Congratulations, Layne! We can’t wait to see what your future holds.

FAF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS The Family Assistance Fund (FAF) supports employees and independent contractors in times of disaster, severe employee illnesses, or other hardships. The Fund also provides flowers for funerals, hospital stays, and births, and awards several scholarships per year to dependents of employees or interns. FAF is funded by voluntary donations from TMC employees, and it allows all of us at TMC to support our co-workers and their families during times of difficulty and times of celebration. The 2023 FAF scholarship winners are: -Sophia Andrews

-Evan Legget

-Kaitlin Winter

-Mollie Graham

-Mick Drecker

John Sell Retires After 16 Years with TMC After more than 16 years as a Regional Vice President of Business Development, John Sell retired from TMC at the end of 2023. He says he feels lucky to have spent so much of his career at a company that is known not only for its great service and beautiful trucks, but also for its integrity, excellence, and honesty. “We’re the Cadillac of the flatbed industry,” he says. Lou Gartner, Executive Vice President of Business Development, says that John has been an integral part of the business development team during his tenure. “John has made a tremendous impact at TMC,” says Lou. “With his years of experience in the industry, he was a mentor to many here at TMC. I’m going to miss him—not only because he has been a valued member of the business development team, but because I am proud to count him as a friend.” No matter where retirement takes him, John knows he’ll always carry the TMC spirit with him. “I’m going to see TMC trucks on the road, and I know it’ll put a smile on my face,” he says. “I went out with the best asset-based carrier in the country, in my opinion. It’s like playing for a professional team that won the Super Bowl—that’s how I feel about TMC.”

Thank you, John, for your years of service at TMC! We wish you the very best for your retirement.

Fleet Manager Glenda Miller Retires After 25 Years with TMC Glenda Miller, a fleet manager based in TMC’s terminal in Joplin, Missouri, is retiring after 25 years with the company.

19

Glenda has spent her career making a difference in the lives of her drivers every day, but she is also especially known for what she has done to make Driver Appreciation Week special each year. She cooked biscuits and gravy, decorated the Joplin terminal, and organized lunches for drivers, always going the extra mile to make sure drivers know they are appreciated throughout the year.

“Over her 25-year career, Glenda has had a big impact on all of the drivers that she has had contact with,” says Tim Heim, Senior Vice President of Operations. “Glenda did an amazing job with her team and as well as coaching and developing fleet managers through the years. She also did an awesome job of making sure that Driver Appreciation Week was nothing short of amazing. We wish Glenda nothing but good health and happiness as she transitions into her next chapter. Thank you, Glenda, for everything you contributed over the years to make TMC the leader in the industry.”

Thank you, Glenda, for the dedication you have shown TMC throughout the years!

TMC IN THE COMMUNITY Military Care Packages During the week of Thanksgiving, TMC’s Safety Admin Team assembled and sent out 80 care packages to members of the military. The packages were filled with snacks, hygiene products, playing cards, crossword puzzles, and other items to make the holiday season a little brighter for these active service members. Thank you to everyone who helped to organize and assemble the packages.

Holiday Food Drive Throughout the 2023 holiday season, employees at TMC offices around the country participated in our yearly food drive. All in all, TMC employees brought in more than 3200 pounds of food and household goods to restock local food banks and help our neighbors in need. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

Iowa Cubs game TMC employees at our Des Moines-area locations had the chance to join in on the fun at our Iowa Cubs Game outing at Principal Park this summer! Maintenance technician Quinton Mazan even had the opportunity to throw the first pitch and get the game started. Way to go, Quinton! A big thank you to everyone who made it to the game! It was a wonderful opportunity to create new memories and have a great time doing so. Go Cubs!

Des Moines Turkey Trot A total of 98 TMC employees—along with NASCAR driver Sammy Smith—braved the chilly weather on Thanksgiving Day to take part in the Turkey Trot, whether in-person, in downtown Des Moines, or virtually. The yearly event is a chance to be part of our community and get some fresh air as part of the Thanksgiving celebration.

Ho Ho Ho! Santa Visits TMC! One of our favorite holiday traditions at TMC is the yearly visit from Santa Claus. And Jolly Old St. Nick didn’t disappoint in 2023! Santa (who mysteriously resembled dedicated fleet manager Cory Jaeger) spent a Saturday morning at our Des Moines headquarters spreading holiday cheer and taking photos with TMC employees and their families. There was also a crafting area set up in the Chrome Café to give kids a chance to make a holiday project to take home with them. Before heading back to the North Pole, Santa took a ride in one of TMC’s black and shiny Peterbilt trucks.

BLACK & CHROME

SALUTES “Dallyn is my trainer, and I just wanted to make it known that he goes above and beyond in his duties and makes sure if I have a question to take the time and explain in depth until I am satisfied with my understanding of things. He is also open to any suggestions that I have had. Training is tough to do, and I just think he should be recognized for the job that he does!” -Carl Cress to Dallyn Bookout “I’m not sure what type of recognition program you have for your drivers, but I would like to personally recommend Alexander Fritton for some type of recognition. He did the right thing when his load began to shift and he shut down to reach out for assistance. The previous carrier on this lane had a habitual problem with this product and would regularly continue to drive a few hundred miles to my facility instead of asking for assistance, exposing hundreds of other drivers on the road to unsafe conditions. Alexander clearly understands the importance of hauling a safe load and keeping track of changing conditions. He is a good agent of your company and should be recognized for it. Please express my sincere appreciation to him. Thanks.” -Adam A. Poplin - BDC Operations Manager, Home Depot, to Alex Fritton “I would like to give a shout out to Dave Perfect. He has been a fantastic friend and mentor both while he was over the road and even now that he is teaching at the Training Facility in Gaston. Not a day goes by that I don’t reflect on something he has taught me. Dave is completely dedicated to both TMC and his fellow coworkers and I APPRECIATE him completely.” -William Kurth to Dave Perfect

“Dudley and his trainee Javon were loading at the same place as myself in Lawton, OK. They both came over and helped me secure and tarp my load. Javon was on his first day in the truck and took on any task without a second thought. It’s good to see trainers and trainees working to not only get their load done but taking a few extra minutes to help a fellow driver out. Ya’ll keep up the hard work. Thanks again, guys.” -James Hawes to Dudley Dillay “This individual is truly remarkable! I greatly appreciate his assistance when I was feeling frustrated while working with the coils. He provided me with valuable tips and tricks to ensure the securement of the coils for my upcoming battle. Surprisingly, we coincidentally ended up at the same receiver location where he kindly assisted me in untarping and taught me the correct folding technique to neatly fit the tarps inside the box. To my surprise, he had also been at the same pick-up site as me! He generously shared additional tips and tricks he had acquired while on the road, including DOT recommendations. Furthermore, he even gifted me an extension stick for edge protection. If this individual doesn’t receive a well-deserved blessing, I question the state of the world we live in. His positive and uplifting spirit truly sets him apart. He possesses a great attitude and takes pleasure in both the road and encouraging others.” -Ernest Watson El Jr to Yanie Hernandez “Ryan runs dedicated out of Fort Dodge, so once he was empty he could have taken off for his next load, but it was -5 this morning and he decided to stay and help me pull tarps. I commend and thank him! Thank you once again. I love you, man!” -Michael Tereza to Ryan Skogan “TMC Driver Trainer Walter Smith was so helpful to assist in helping me secure a load that was unfamiliar to me. I’d like to give him a shoutout and thank him for being such huge help! Thanks, Walter.” -Latoya Lucas to Walter Scott

“Orlando took time while he was getting loaded to help me throw straps and secure. This not only helped me, but since I was out in half the time there was more room for everyone else who was beginning to pile up in the confined area. This definitely helped keep things moving smoothly.” -Zackary Langley to Orlando Perez “Hats off to this young man who assisted me and two other drivers in untarping, folding, and putting away their gear. This young man chose to be last in line due to his clock. In speaking with him, I saw he had a positive attitude towards this business and was respectful towards other drivers. We need more drivers like him. Thank you for the assistance.” -Adam Morris to Jacob Hansbrough “Corey is a standup guy. He helped me back into the shipping bay door at Holcim Insulation. The next day when I arrived, he and his trainee helped me unstrap and get my edge protectors off. Corey loves helping other drivers out. He helped other drivers as well while I was unloading at the construction site.” -Peter Starus to Corey Harp “While pulling tarps on a windy day in Sarasota, FL, this driver walked back to my truck (about 100 yards) to help me pull and fold tarps. He was very professional. I can’t overstate how appreciative I was. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch his name and it wasn’t on his door. But thank you, driver!” -Jeremy Farr to Unknown “Absolutely fantastic guy! We loaded at a lumber yard together, and he was super helpful giving me all kinds of new advice, being a newer driver. We were going to the same drop location, so we rode the whole 500+ miles together and ran like a true line team. It was a fantastic experience, and he is a true team player and wants to see others be successful. Super great guy.” -Paige Rutledge to Scott Self

“Jimmy is a new driver to TMC and went above and beyond to help out all the drivers here who needed help undoing securement, folding tarps, pulling bungees, etc. Jimmy set the tone for all drivers here to get in and help each other out. There were about four to five of us out here needing to undo securement, and we had everyone helping everyone. I feel like it was because Jimmy was the first to get out and help. He and the other drivers who were here (didn’t get their numbers) should be recognized for their help. Things like this are why I love working for TMC.” -Andrew Vanim to Jimmy Breakfield “I didn’t catch his name, but he saw my truck was leaking coolant. He came and helped me with all my securement and tarping to aid me getting out of the shipper faster and to a shop to get fixed. Definitely an example of Destination: Excellence and what drivers should do for each other. Thank you!” -Christopher Saik to unknown

“Picking up my load, I didn’t have enough edge protectors. Carl gave some of his without question. Then he came over and helped me finished strapping down because it was starting to rain. He said we are all TMC family. Just saying I think he deserves some notoriety. If he reads this, thanks for the help, Carl. You’re a stand-up guy in my book.” -Jonathan Batchelor to Carl (last name unknown) “Met Charlie yesterday at a pickup in OKC. We both were delivering in Odessa, TX. He showed me a few things to help my efficiency out. Charlie arrived in Odessa before me. He sent me his location because the Trimble had us going out of the way. He made sure I had a place to park when I arrived. He also helped arrange my securement in the side boxes so it would be easier to access. I asked him why he wasn’t a trainer because he would be a great one.” -Derrick Tate to Charlie Gillespie

“My cousin Mike works for Circle K corporate doing site inspections. He was in Blairs, VA, and saw a TMC truck pull into the lot, and the driver did a thorough load check. He said he watched a bunch of trucks from other companies come through to fuel, and none of them checked their loads except for TMC. He said, ‘Your company trained you guys right.’” -Patrick Mahan “Josh helped me reroll my tarp in the wind at a rest area! I was going to wait until night or when the wind slowed down. Josh offered to help, so I pulled a steel tarp out of the side box, and we folded it up and rolled it tight really fast. It’s a small thing but it means so much. Cool guy.” -John DeGregory to Josh (last name unknown)
