Celebrating 50 Years
Destination: Excellence
TMC Transportation celebrated 50 years in business this year. On March 6th, 1972, the first delivery was hauled from Chicago to Des Moines. Since that time, TMC’s mission has been to set itself apart in the industry as a premium flatbed carrier. To achieve this reputation, TMC focuses on hiring the most professional drivers in the industry who consistently deliver safely and on time for customers.
Once its founder, Harrold Annett, purchased the dormant trucking company, The Mickow Corporation, he began an impressive journey to grow TMC into the organization it is today. Starting with only six trucks and an office staff of two, the company now operates out of four terminals and a dozen Logistics offices. In 1984, Mr. Annett changed the name of the company to TMC Transportation.
The company’s success depends on many people - including drivers who keep freight moving, office and shop employees who support the business, and dedicated customers who rely on TMC for their deliveries. Putting all the logistical pieces together to make it run smoothly is both science and art. But at the heart of the entire operation, it runs off the work ethic and determination of the people involved.
The goal for TMC is to not only hold fast to the success brought through the past 50 years but to continue to grow into the future. Freight demand remains strong and, therefore, the need for truck drivers is at an all-time high. Career opportunities abound in the transportation industry and TMC seeks to attract employees to increase its success in the areas of Diesel Technology, Information Technology, Logistics/Supply Chain Management, Sales, Marketing, Recruiting, and many other areas of practice. With onsite training and development programs continuing to expand, this is an opportune time for those interested in entering the industry. TMC extends an invitation for candidates to discover if TMC fits their interests and join the continued pursuit of excellence.
“I know the only way to make sure our culture survives, and our company continues to thrive, is to put the ownership into the hands of the people who appreciate it the most, you, my friends, and employees. You have worked, and continue to work, side by side with me, to build one of the absolute best trucking companies in the industry and you deserve it. So, I am putting my trust in all of you and establishing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, which means TMC will become an employee-owned company,”

Driver Appreciation Week 2022
During Driver Appreciation Week 2022, office employees at select locations had a chance to test their backing skills and to get a taste of what our drivers do to keep their trucks looking sharp. They were playing for a chance to win prizes for drivers. Through these exercises, we are reminded of the hard work and dedication it takes to be able to be successful as a TMC driver! Daily random drawings and trivia questions offered drivers more ways to win gift cards and other prizes.
We had about 30 people from TMC management traveling throughout the week to meet drivers on the road. Some rode along with drivers, including our EVP-Operations, Travis Johnson, VP-Linehaul Operations, Tim Heim, VP-Dedicated Operations, Chris Buckingham, and IT Project Manager, Daniel Stone. Managers from several departments were stationed at truck stops and customer sites. Many of our vendors sponsored lunches and giveaways.
Thank you to all the TMC employees who helped with activities and getting out to serve drivers. Additonally, a special thank you to those who support our drivers and understand the importance of their daily work.
Encouraging words from one of our valued customers:
“I truly cannot say thank you enough on a day like today. Our loading space is extremely limited and then add some wind and rain and we can get backed up in no time. I currently have at least 5 TMC trucks onsite for loading and we can only load one at a time. The driver has to stay under our awning to tarp, so you can only imagine what our parking lot looks like. TMC truly has the MOST respectful, kind and safest drivers I have ever come across. They all have smiles on their faces and are more than understanding and patient with us and this is almost unheard of these days. THIS is why I ignore calls and emails from other companies. The service you provide is OUT OF THIS WORLD! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
Wheel Master
TMC’s newest Wheel Master, Curtis Rasnake, joined his fellow Wheel Masters at their annual luncheon in Des Moines on Saturday September 17th, 2022. This is a special event each year to honor the years of safe driving and camaraderie that these drivers share.
Nominees for this award are drivers who have previously been selected for Driver of the Quarter at any time in their tenure with TMC. Wheel Master nominees are selected based on the following criteria: nominations from employees, safe driving record, years of service, and excellence in customer service. Josh Perry, VP of Safety, shared that the total consecutive safe miles driven by our Wheel Masters is a whopping 64,287,516 miles with 573 years of service among the group!
On paper, it may appear that Rasnake has accomplished everything there is to accomplish at TMC. In the future, he looks forward to training more drivers and setting others up to have the success he has had at TMC. “If I hadn’t enjoyed what I have done the last 16 years I wouldn’t be doing it.” Rasnake said.
Congrats Curtis Rasnake!
“I have always had great support while I’ve been here. When I was a new driver, I had experienced drivers looking out for me. I can depend on everyone in the office and TMC is like family to me. I have many coworkers that are now my friends.” Rasnake spoke very highly of his fleet manager, Kevin Mattox, and credited him as a big reason for this award.”
Iron Warriors Partnership
TMC received a visit from the Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club to thank us for supporting the Public Safety Officers Welfare Fund. They are from the Crue’d Pigs Chapter of Central Iowa. The Iron Warriors assist public safety officials and their families in times of crisis. Public safety officers include law enforcement officers, fire service personnel, medics, EMT, and other first responders as well as corrections officers and others whose job is to provide our community with protection in times of danger, disaster, or distress. In addition, they serve food to vets for Thanksgiving, do volunteer work for other charities, and adopt families for Christmas. TMC thanks the Iron Warriors for their service and is looking forward to seeing the impacts the Iron Warriors make in the future.
TMC Driver Sammy Smith
Last year was another breakout year for TMC Transportation driver Sammy Smith.
In 2022, Sammy returned to the ARCA Menards Series platform with Kyle Busch Motorsports, competed with Donnie Wilson Racing in super late models, and ran nine races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Across the ARCA platform, Smith won 12 races, led 1,988 laps, and collected the Sioux Chief Showdown and ARCA Menards Series East championships. Across nine races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Smith collected three top-10 finishes with a best finish of third at Watkins Glen International.
While navigating the busy NASCAR and ARCA schedule, Smith returned to his roots and competed in numerous super late model races. The 18-year-old driver opened the season at New Smyrna (F.L.) Speedway by winning the 2022 World Series of Asphalt championship. In August, racing returned to the famous North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway for the Racetrack Revival with Smith dominating the super late model race leading every lap. Smith’s final race of the 2022 season occured on Dec. 4 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL for the Snowball Derby.
During the 2023 season, Smith will be driving the #18 car for Joe Gibbs Racing. TMC is proud to sponsor him again and we look forward to a fantastic season ahead.
“TMC is proud to continue its support of Sammy Smith as he takes on the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series. Sammy has already been such a great ambassador for TMC – on and off the track. His growth as a driver is remarkable and we are impressed with what he has accomplished even now. We can’t wait to see what he will do in the upcoming year.”
- Jason Webb, Exectuive VP of Assest ManagementDecember donations
Throughout the 2022 holiday season, TMC locations across the country pulled together to help stock up local food banks. There were roughly 10,500 donated items totaling over 6,000 pounds of food. The Des Moines and Ankeny locations were able to gather 5,128 pounds of food to donate to the Food Bank of Iowa.
With the help of TMC employees, and multiple trips to the food bank, all the food was distributed between local food pantries, meal sites, and shelters. We hope all of our friends and neighbors were able to enjoy the holiday season with plenty of food on their tables.
We love the opportunity to give back to the Des Moines community and TMC employees continue to go above and beyond when called upon to help.
Meals From the Heartland
Several TMC employees volunteered to pack food this year with Meals from the Heartland in Des Moines, IA. This non-profit organization serves hungry people, not only in Iowa but all over the world.
Thank you to all who helped, and the thousands of volunteers who help each year!
“We’re Midwesterners with big hearts and a calling to serve, and we’re coming together to save starving children, one meal at a time. It’s a wonderful feeling to help the hungry.”

Holiday Events for Charity
Over the 2022 holiday season, the TMC Ames office hosted a holiday event with St. Cecilia Church to help make Christmas a litttle birghter for those in need.
We hope each family had a wonderful holiday season and wish them the best from all of us here at TMC.
Happy Holidays from TMC!

Intern Appreciation Week
Each year TMC takes the time to recognize the hard work our interns put in to not only the success of the company, but their growth as young professionals.
TMC is proud to work with various universities across the U.S. and enjoy seeing the talent that comes from each one. TMC offers internships in departments such as logistics, sales, and customer service.
Thank you, interns, for joining us in the journey to Destination: Excellence.
TMC Becomes Corporate Member of Iowa State Forum
After many years of working with the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University, TMC is moving forward with the Ivy Sales Forum. The deal was set in place for TMC to help grow its ongoing internship program, all while being conveniently located in the Iowa State Research Park. Internship opportunities provide an emphasis on professional growth and development, while also educating individuals on all the facets of sales and supply chain. TMC opened its Ames branch back in 2017 and has since attended numerous student fairs and even hosted various student-run organizations across campus. The transportation company has been hiring postgraduates and interns from Iowa State University, since the early 1980s.
The membership is a collaboration between academia and industry. The Ivy Sales Forum strives to advance the growth and effectiveness of professional sales and works along with its corporate partners to provide sales certificate students with relevant experiential learning opportunities.
“TMC is very proud to be a member of the Ivy Sales Forum and everyone is looking forward to expanding on our long-running collaboration with ISU. Our Student Training Center in Ames continues to grow every year and will offer great sales experience as we work to mold our Sales Development Internships to follow as closely as possible the teachings of ISF. These are great times to be in Transportation and especially in Transportation Sales,” shared Kenny Kyle, V.P. Campus Collaboration.
Since opening the Student Training Center in Ames back in 2017, over 100 ISU students have completed internships, many of whom continued with great careers at TMC.
Harrold Annett Memorial & FAF Scholarships

Participating in and providing professional development opportunities for the young talent in the state of Iowa is a strong focus of our growth plan as a nationwide organization and beacon institution in Des Moines, IA.”
Congratulations to Kennedy Wendl on receiving the 2nd annual Harrold Annett Memorial Scholarship! We look forward to your continued success at TMC.
