INSPIRATO MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS
Experiencing the Beauty of Antarctica with Inspirato
BY ABBIE MOOD
Ajourney to the end of the earth calls for a sense of adventure, a can-do attitude, a dash of courage. This February, armed with these traits and the confidence that comes from traveling with Inspirato, 124 members and their guests traveled to the southernmost continent for a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctica Expedition.
The trip took place toward the end of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer season, which meant longer days and milder (all things considered) temperatures. “The trip was extraordinary in all respects, from countless wildlife sightings— penguins, seals, whales, birds, and more—to scenic hikes and kayak/Zodiac trips,” shared Eric Grosse, Former CEO of Inspirato. “On board, the accommodations and cuisine were first rate, and our members had constant access to a world-class group of scientists, explorers, and photographers from National Geographic.”
They even saw a lone emperor penguin, the tallest and heaviest of all existing penguin species. It’s rare to spot an emperor penguin while cruising Antarctica, as these birds typically stay farther inland and live in more remote locations. “It was very exciting for us to see an emperor penguin. He was very friendly and curious,” said Kelley Dingens, Manager, Inspirato Only experiences. And because they were on the National Geographic Resolution, the ship parked right on the ice so that members could get out and see the penguin up close and personal.
The unique icebreaker design of the ship also allowed for an unscheduled trip to the Weddell Sea on the eastern side of the Antarctic peninsula. The Weddell Sea’s ice floes and icebergs can be dangerous, and the region is best known as the location where explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship became trapped in ice and sank in 1915. But the Resolution is designed for polar exploration, making the excursion not only safe, but luxurious.
There are many memorable moments from this incredible trip, but highlights include access to a full team of National Geographic experts that were available to explain everything from how to take great pictures to the continent’s unique geology and wildlife; sipping hot chocolate on a Zodiac excursion; taking a true polar plunge into the icy waters; and seeing the many beautiful shapes of ice as they floated by.
“You’d expect to get tired of looking at icebergs day after day,” Kelley laughed. “Guests actually mentioned getting used to seeing penguins but being constantly amazed by the beauty and depth of the ice.”
Clockwise from top left: The icy landscapes of Antarctica were a highlight of the trip; The group spotted a lone emperor penguin—a rare treat!; Members enjoyed several opportunities to get onto the ice and the water and see the beautiful continent up close; The weather was fantastic and members saw a variety of wildlife on this trip; The unique features of the ship allowed the group to "park" right on the ice to explore; Former CEO Eric Grosse and his wife Stefanie; From Zodiak adventures to a real "polar plunge," the trip was filled with fantastic memories.
Golf, Wine, and Scenic Landscapes on Inspirato's New Zealand Golf Experience
BY ABBIE MOOD
Scotland may be the birthplace of golf, but New Zealand is considered one of the world’s premier golf destinations. Earlier this year, a group of golf-loving Inspirato members flew halfway around the world to play the island’s worldrenowned courses, lauded for their natural beauty and challenging layouts. Along the way, they enjoyed signature Inspirato Only programming you simply can’t find anywhere else.
The trip started at the Farm at Cape Kidnappers with an Inspirato Only dinner featuring a true farm-to-table fare with vegetables, fruits, and herbs that were harvested from the on-site garden. On the course, the Cape Kidnappers’ back nine stretches across fingers of land separated by deep gullies (certainly home to many a lost ball) and offered guests widespread views of the Pacific Ocean. Looking down the coastline, one direction had views of the wine country (where the group would visit in upcoming days) on one side and the town of Napier on the other side.
In bet ween rounds, guests experienced wine tasting at the prestigious Craggy Range winery. The vines grow in the shadow of Te Mata Peak, where the Peabody family crafts award-winning wines that reflect the distinctiveness of New Zealand’s terroir.
Over the next three days, the group moved to Queenstown, where golfers enjoyed rounds at Millbrook Resort and Jack’s Point. Sitting in the Wakatipu Basin, surrounded by a picturesque mountain landscape, Millbrook Resort offered guests two 18-hole courses with a variety of natural hazards—including tussocks, streams, schist stone, trees and buildings, plus five different tee positions—to challenge all levels of golfers. And then there is Jack’s Point, a spectacular 18-hole, par 72 championship course with even more views—this time it’s the shores of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range.
A real off the course highlight was a private helicopter tour for members and their guests to see
the dramatic peaks, waterfalls, and glaciers of the Milford Sound and Lake Lochnagar, the self-proclaimed “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
For the grand finale, the trip finished at the Kauri Cliffs course, set on 6,000 acres of working sheep and cattle farmland with more views of the Pacific. This last leg of the trip also gave members and their guests the opportunity to get out onto the water that they’ve been seeing from a distance for days with a fun catamaran experience.
From the travel arrangements to the golf to the extra experiences, one member shared that “the trip was well thought out, perfectly executed—even when things like flight delays happened—and enjoyable throughout. The trip was exceptional. We had high expectations for it and they were met and surpassed.”
In summary? “Inspirato knows how to put together a great trip.”
Clockwise from top left Golf-loving guests played on world-class courses with breathtaking views; Every Inspirato experience includes luxurious accommodations that celebrate the best of the region; Scenic views weren't limited to the golf courses on this trip; Members also had the opportunity to explore New Zealand's gorgeous landscapes; Everyone had a great time on the four courses throughout the trip; Making long-lasting memories with newfound friends in New Zealand.
For a week this past May, dozens of Inspirato members were treated to the best of the Mediterranean coastline, during a luxury Inspirato Only cruise that sailed from Barcelona to chic ports-of-call along the French Riviera down the coast to the Italian Riviera, celebrated for its charming villages and scenic beauty.
From a helipad on the ship that offered members and their guests a bird’s-eye view of Italy to a classical concert of Phantom of the Opera performed at sunset, this cruise’s itinerary was filled with unique Inspirato Only events.
And for Rachel Wheeler, there was an extra-special moment that had been in the works for weeks. Her then-boyfriend Jamie reached out to Inspirato before the cruise to ask for help with a proposal. After talking through some options, the cruise team was on call for whenever the moment felt right. Once on board, Jamie decided to pop the question on their second full day in St. Tropez.
“It became a full team effort to make this as special as possible and be able to surprise both Jamie and Rachel with a congratulations set up when they came back on board,” said Kelley Dingens, Manager, Inspirato Only experiences. “Two of us went into town to pick up Dom Perignon, Jolene stopped at the market after her tour to pick up a bouquet of flowers, and the cruise team had brought a few decorations and a special card to set up the room when it officially happened! We had the whole crew on standby to help celebrate them and they were so surprised and happy when they came back from dinner that night!”
The trip started in Barcelona and hit all of the hot spots along the way to Rome, Italy. There was a cooking class in Collioure, France; relaxing in the iconic beach town Saint Tropez; touring the F1 course in Monte Carlo; visiting the colorful Cinque Terre in Italy; wine tasting in Porto Santo Stefano; and exploring the ancient limestone cliffs of Bonifacio, France.
“This was our fourth yachting cruise with Inspirato—this cruise was the BEST,” said Mary Ann. “After each of our yachting cruises, we ask ‘how can Inspirato top this?’ Don't know how you do it, but please keep it coming!”

SAFARI IN STYLE:
Discover Africa with Inspirato
BY ABBIE MOOD
Going on safari with Inspirato is the quintessential safari experience, as a group of Inspirato members and their guests found out last June. On the hunt for the Big Five? Check. Participants saw all that and more—lions, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, buffalo, hippos, leopards, monkeys, and hyenas—on daily game drives. A deep dive into cultural experiences? Check. Members watched traditional dances with the Maasai, sang with camp staff, and learned about Maasai culture from the warriors themselves.
From off-the-grid safari lodges and knowledgeable guides, every detail was high-end and expertly coordinated. But off-the-grid didn’t mean that members missed out on first-class service and luxurious comfort: Sasaab Camp’s luxe Moroccanstyle tents boast private plunge pools; Grumeti Serengeti’s River Lodge sits on the western slopes of the Serengeti and is situated near one of the river’s most famous fording points for wildebeest; and the andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge gave members the opportunity to wake up in
one of the most famous African landscapes. (A highlight was being able to explore the rim of the famous Ngorongoro Crater, an ancient caldera that is home to one of the highest densities of wild animals in the world!)And then there was Giraffe Manor, surrounded by acres of vast, indigenous forest and famous for its resident herd of giraffes that casually wander around the hotel grounds.
Members loved the hot air balloon over the Tanzanian landscape and had the unique opportunity to visit the renowned Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi to feed, bathe, and play with orphaned elephants.
With special touches throughout and all logistics taken care of from the moment they arrived until the moment they set off for home, Inspirato handled the details so that guests were able to truly enjoy the safari experience. With activities designed by our in-house team specifically with members in mind, this once-in-a-lifetime trip was filled with unique and exclusive experiences.
Clockwise from top right Every trip with Inspirato offers unique experiences, like meeting giraffes up close or staying at luxury resorts where giraffes wander the grounds; Luxury accommodations on the trip included the andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, sitting on the rim of the famous African landmark; Members and their guests spotted all of the Big Five animals on this trip: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos; Open air views abounded on the trip; With two drives on most days, the safari experience offered guests plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.
Finding Friendship on Inspirato Only Experiences

Whether island-hopping around the Galápagos archipelago or sipping your way through Portugal’s wine country, Inspirato Only experiences offer unforgettable adventures for our members. While the locations and activities may be exotic, the accommodations are first class, with all the comfort and personal touches you’ve come to expect from Inspirato.
Members join Inspirato for a myriad of reasons including exclusive access to the world’s best homes and vacation accommodations, meticulously personalized service, and tailor-made travel planning that removes any guesswork from your next getaway. While these core competencies distinguish Inspirato, there’s an intangible benefit of joining the Club that’s truly invaluable: friendship.
PART OF A COMMUNITY
In addition to enjoying numerous getaways at Inspirato’s residences, longtime members Cyndie and Willie Lee Wang have also explored remote corners of the world through Inspirato Only experiences. During their trips to Alaska, the Galápagos Islands, and Antarctica, they made countless memories—and a few friends—along the way.
“Because these experiences are exclusive to Inspirato members and their guests, you go into these trips with a mindset that you’re part of a greater community,” Cyndie claimed. “It’s not like a normal trip where you’re very insular with the people you travel with. You're surrounded by people with similar interests, so there's an expectation of making new connections.”
NEW MEMORIES WITH NEW FRIENDS
When Mark and Barbie Myers joined Inspirato in 2018, they had no idea their world-class vacations might evolve into planning adventures with fellow members. “When we joined, we did it to rent luxury houses to spend time with our kids,” Mark said. “We really didn’t know about the Inspirato Only experiences, but after our first trip, we were hooked!”
"On our first trip from Barcelona to Gibraltar, we realized there are other people like us on these experiences, and we met a great group of folks that we connected with," explained Mark. "Over the years, we found a group that we stay in touch with, so when we sign up for a trip, I send out a text to our group to see who wants to join!"
“On another trip down the Rhine River,” Barbie added, “there was a couple we really hit it off with, and they just visited us in Vail. While they were visiting, we planned a trip together to the French and Italian rivieras, and to Vietnam as well. So, we’ve made some new lifelong friends, which is crazy to think about!”
“At this point,” Mark concluded, “Inspirato has given us so much more than we’ve given them.”
When you travel with Inspirato, you get so much more than a vacation. You belong to a club of like-minded travelers and adventure seekers. Inspirato Only experiences allow members to interact with one another and maximize the impact of their membership. Book an experience today—your friends are waiting for you!

NOT
ALL SAFARIS ARE CREATED EQUAL
A member’s journey from dream trip to reality with Bespoke.
BY CLARKE WATSON
Nearly a decade ago, Glen and Carol Bolger journeyed to South Africa to visit their daughter during her Semester at Sea. While there, the adventurous couple embarked on a three-day safari to witness the wild landscapes and unique wildlife. The safari left a profound impact on them, igniting an insatiable desire to return with grander plans and more time to explore.
TO BESPOKE OR NOT TO BESPOKE?
Whether you seek to venture off the beaten path, fulfill a bucket-list trip, or immerse yourself in a distant destination entirely new to you, Bespoke ensures your dreams become a reality.
“The reason we chose Bespoke for our safari was severalfold,” Glen explained. “We were bringing our friends Sanjiv and Meena along, and part of their agreement to join us was that everything would be first class, with topnotch accommodations, expert guides and exceptional treatment all around."
Considering they’ve been members for over a decade, Glen and Carol were confident Inspirato would not disappoint.
With a Bespoke-planned trip, you can anticipate a luxurious experience, regardless of the destination. "It was everything we wanted in a safari," Glen exclaimed. "The food was excellent—you don't go on safari for the cuisine, but if you're going, you might as well do it right!"
OUR TEAM, YOUR DREAM
With very few exceptions, Bespoke can take you anywhere in the world while upholding the first-class standards that define Inspirato. Leveraging on-the-ground connections across the globe, the Bespoke team is dedicated to maximizing every moment of your journey.
“Our Bespoke team has a wealth of knowledge,” said Kate Migala, Senior Supervisor of the Bespoke team and primary point of contact for the Bolger’s
safari. “Between everyone, we’ve traveled almost everywhere in the world and collectively have so much personal experience, knowledge, and education on every destination.”
Planning your perfect Bespoke trip starts with a phone call between the Inspirato member(s), their Care team representative, and a Bespoke specialist. “It’s not uncommon for our first call with a member to last over an hour,” Kate pointed out. “We want to gather as much information as possible. In this case, we needed to discover why the Bolgers and their guests wanted to visit Africa. The more information we can get, the more we can personalize their trip.”
TAILOR-MADE MEMORIES
Planning an African safari can be overwhelming, as it is far from a one-sizefits-all experience. With many lodges having a reservation waitlist of one to two years, the advantage of having a dedicated team to plan your excursion becomes invaluable.
“We take everything that’s intimidating about Africa, and make it easy for our members,” Kate illustrated. “If they need visas or vaccinations, we’ll provide a step-by-step process and provide as much assistance as they need. From the time we start planning, through the end of their trip, there’s never a lapse in communication.”
Once Kate and her team learned that the Bolgers and their guests wanted to focus on East Africa to witness the great migration of the Serengeti’s wildebeest herds, they started to put a plan in place.
Among the numerous experiences during their 10-day safari, a few moments stood out. Glen, who had missed seeing a male lion on his previous safari, found this journey exceptionally rewarding. At the Sirikoi Lodge in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, he was mesmerized by the sight of four male lions at dusk, framed by the breathtaking backdrop of an African sunset. Their next stop was the andBeyond Bateleur Camp in Kenya, where the group enjoyed a sunrise hot air balloon ride for a unique vantage point of the Serengeti. From above, they gazed at the vast wonders of wild Africa, spotting herds of giraffes, prides of lions, rafts of hippos, and a colossal confusion of wildebeests trekking across the savanna. Finally, at the Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge in the Karatu district of Tanzania, an expert guide led them on an exploration of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most dramatic safari destinations on the continent.
TRAVEL WITH CONFIDENCE
When it comes to the trip of a lifetime, every moment matters. With Bespoke, you can be confident that every priority and preference will be meticulously catered to throughout your vacation.
“People can book a trip to Africa through a lot of different companies, but through Bespoke you know you’re going to get that personalized, custom attention to detail that you won’t get elsewhere,” Kate explained.
Whether you’re dreaming of an African safari, an Antarctic expedition, or a luxurious journey through Europe, the only limit to what you can experience on a Bespoke trip is your imagination.

Grandparents Traveling with Grandchildren: THE RISE of SKIP-GEN TRAVEL
Leave the parents behind!
BY CLARKE WATSON
Ask any grandparent, and they’ll tell you— with a big grin on their face—that spending time with their grandchildren rejuvenates their soul. This is precisely why many active grandparents are embracing one of the latest
travel trends: skip-gen travel. As the name implies, skip-gen travel bypasses the parents, creating a unique opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to journey together and create cherished memories.
Finding Time to Travel Together
Among the first 500 members to join Inspirato, Linda and David Schiffer have enjoyed years of unforgettable vacations with family and friends. Their grandchildren, now in their late teens, grew up going on Inspirato vacations to Telluride, the Berkshires, and other locales around the world. With each escapade, their family grew closer, creating countless memories while honoring family traditions.
However, as their grandchildren grew older, orchestrating a family trip became a formidable challenge. With one grandchild in college,
two in boarding school, and a fourth attending public school, aligning everyone's schedules proved increasingly difficult. What was once an effortless endeavor transformed into a complex puzzle, requiring careful planning and coordination.
“We’ve been to a lot of places together with the whole family,” claimed Linda. “We’re lucky that everyone wants to be together. But now that the grandkids are older, everyone has different schedules that make it almost impossible for the ten of us to get together.”
The Gift of Travel
Sick and tired of juggling schedules—and aware their grandchildren will become young adults sooner than later—Linda and David took matters into their own hands and made a decision that continues to benefit the entire family to this day. Rather than giving their grandkids traditional presents for their bar and bat mitzvahs, the Schiffers chose to offer them a much more meaningful experience.
“We decided to gift them a trip— anywhere they wanted in the world.”
Linda explained. “It started last June, when our oldest grandson was finishing boarding school and no one else had time off. We decided to take him to London and it was beyond wonderful. It was a very different kind of trip than going with the whole family, and the one-on-one time was just fabulous. And of course, Inspirato took care of everything from beginning to end.”
One Trip Led to Another
After the wild success of their skip-gen trip to England, the Schiffers quickly started planning more adventures with their other grandchildren. As luck would have it, their grandson Levi was studying abroad in Jordan, and they seized the opportunity.
“We were just in Petra with Levi and Inspirato planned a fantastic nighttime tour of the city,” Linda said. “It was pitch black, and there were lit lanterns illuminating the whole walk. And while we were walking, he opened up to us about his life, family, friendships, and relationships in a way I never, ever would have had to experience if not for our walk together. And,” she beamed, “you learn what fine kids they are. They’re different when their parents aren’t there—you see a side of them that’s very different, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
“With Levi studying abroad and being in Jordan for the year, he was so thrilled to show us what he’d learned,” David added. “It was nice to have all the attention on him—when we’re with the group, that one-on-one time doesn’t happen.”
A Different Kind of Adventure
Planning a multi-generational vacation for a large family presents several challenges beyond conflicting schedules. One of the most significant difficulties is catering to diverse interests. While one group may desire a relaxing day at
the beach, another may prefer an excursion to a winery, making it challenging to satisfy everyone's preferences.
“Our grandchildren are very adventurous, and they planned a trip to New Zealand last December for our whole family. We all went sky diving, bungee jumping, and white-water rafting off waterfalls—not things that David and I typically like to do,” explained Linda.
“When we travel one-on-one with the grandkids, we’re able to do things at our own pace and show them a more cultural side of things.”
One of the greatest advantages of skip-gen travel is the opportunity to slow down and spend quality time together. As an Inspirato member, the added benefit of planning activities that everyone will enjoy enhances the experience. "Inspirato makes it so easy," Linda shared. "Initially, we were a bit apprehensive about traveling alone with our young grandson, but Inspirato took care of everything, allowing us to really focus on him. It's incredible—you can provide them with a list of ten activities you want to do, and they'll make it happen."
The Ones Left Behind
While skip-gen travel sounds like a great situation for grandparents and their grandchildren, what about the parents that are left behind?
For the Schiffer family, the parents look at it as a win-win as it gives them a refreshing break from their routine. During their “time off,” they have a full heart knowing their kids are spending quality time with their grandparents.
“When we first told our son and daughter-inlaw about our travel plans and asked for their opinion, they couldn’t be more excited!” Linda laughed. “I know they want to be there with us, but I also know they enjoy the break too.”
As a parent, it’s natural to worry about your children when they travel. Add a grandparent or two to the mix and the stresses can multiply! Luckily for the Schiffers, they have peace of mind when planning their trips. “Because Inspirato takes care of so much, there’s no need to be afraid as a parent if they’re not traveling with us. They know we’re all in good hands the whole time.”
From top: Enjoying the views at Buckingham Palace; Exploring the wonders of Petra; White water rafting with the family in New Zealand.
Passing of the Torch
Not only does skip-gen travel augment existing family ties, but it can also inspire new traditions of multi-generational trips. “My daughter said to me that when she’s a grandmother, she hopes her grandchildren want to travel with her,” Linda mentioned. “She’s seeing in real time how great this is working out for everyone.
My only advice is to stay in shape, keeping up with grandkids isn’t easy!
But, traveling with them is a great way to keep us motivated and feeling young. And if you asked our grandchildren, they’re just head over heels about doing this. It’s incredible.”
Because the nature of skip-gen travel promotes quality time between young and old generations, the trips become a tremendous opportunity to share family stories and continue long-standing traditions. “It’s a great way to pass down the rituals we have. Our family loves games so we always bring cards and board games with us. So even if it’s just three of us, we can continue our traditions and the kids really seem to enjoy that and it keeps us all engaged.”
With a focus on staying active, the Schiffers have exciting plans for their next skip-gen adventure. They are taking their granddaughter to Munich to see Adele and Coldplay perform on consecutive nights. Utilizing Bespoke, they are creating a custom itinerary and plan to explore Austria following the concerts. After successful skip-gen trips to London and Jordan, the Schiffers have high hopes for the next excursion. “Our [Inspirato] Care team knows our whole family so well now,” stated Linda. “I know they’ll help us plan something amazing—every trip has been better than the last.”
Quality Time Together
While the dream for any grandparents is to be together with their extended family, skip-gen trips offer a more manageable alternative and fosters genuine, one-on-one conversations.
"For a grandparent, nothing compares to spending alone time with grandchildren—there's nothing like it,”
David recalled. “Inspirato gives us the opportunity to make that happen. People hear about our trips and tell us they want to be adopted by us, and that’s such a compliment."
There’s no substitute for a family reunion, but there’s also nothing quite like spending one-onone time with people you love. “We’re thankful to Inspirato,” continued David, “for providing the opportunity for us to spend alone time with our grandchildren.”
The Time To Act Is Now
For grandparents unwilling to stay idle, skipgen travel is the gift that keeps giving as the seasoned wisdom of an elder generation intertwines with the boundless curiosity and energy of the youth. Skip-gen travel offers an invaluable opportunity for grandparents to forge deeper connections with their grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come. By stepping into the role of travel companions, grandparents like Linda and David Schiffer not only strengthen familial bonds but also pass down traditions and wisdom in a unique and engaging way. This trend allows for a break from the usual routine, giving grandparents and grandchildren the chance to explore the world together, fostering relationships that might otherwise be limited by busy schedules and geographical distances.
In today's fast-paced world where family members often live far apart, skip-gen travel serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of family ties. It encourages grandparents to stay active and engaged, while giving grandchildren the chance to learn from and bond with their elders. Whether through sharing family stories, playing games, or exploring new destinations, these trips create a unique and lasting impact on everyone involved.
As Linda wisely advised,
"We need to do this now while we can—we see the times changing, we see the schedules changing, and that keeps us motivated."
So, for grandparents looking to create unforgettable experiences and strengthen their family bonds, the time to embrace skip-gen travel is now.

Visit the stunning landscapes of Maui, Hawaii, and spread aloha through conscious tourism.
Under Somewhere the Rainbow
BY CALLIE MORROCCO
Maui is a quaint Eden encompassing white-sand beaches, active volcanoes, palm trees, unique wildlife, and the famed Road to Hana. As Maui recovers from the devastating fires of 2023, locals are urging tourists to come and enjoy the land—responsibly and with compassion. From the prestigious coast of Wailea to the upscale bay of Kapalua, this breathtaking tropical island beckons with endless waterfalls, outdoor activities, and bountiful rainbow skies. Spread aloha (compassion and empathy) by supporting local-owned businesses and giving back to the community through voluntourism opportunities during your trip.
The 2023 Fires: Recovering from Devastation
After destructive, wind-driven wildfires wreaked havoc all over Hawaii—predominantly in Maui’s small town of Lahaina—there’s still lots of recovery needed. According to the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an estimated 2,200+ buildings were destroyed, including residential homes and historic landmarks. Nearly 100 of Lahaina’s citizens lost their lives and most have been displaced. Pamela explained, “seven, eight, nine generations back have been born and raised in Lahaina. They have lost their ancestral homes. Many of them live in multi-generational households which is a huge part of the culture. When you get married,
you build an extension on the house and you take care of the whole family.”
“One of the things that’s so special about Maui is that it gives people a perspective that leads to richness. [They should be] able and open to being humbled and awed by the spirit of life and life-force that is so strong here.”
PAMELA HIWAHIWA GILLMAN LAHAINA RESIDENT
To this day, Lahaina locals aren’t able to return to their homes and reestablish their community. There are still over 3,000 people living in hotels around the islands of Hawaii. Residents have either been relocated or traveled to seek refuge in other parts of the United States. Many will never see their homes again. Following the fires, time seemed to have temporarily stopped. There were no birds, no animals, no water or sewer lines. Even the soil was compromised from poisonous debris. Yet, amidst the devastation, heartache, and pain, Pamela said, “the culture and belief system of people who are connected to the spirit of the islands— whether they’re born here, their family is here, or they come here and choose to belong—understand that there is constant destruction and creation coexisting all the time.” This universal knowing, that creation cannot exist without destruction, is a natural cycle in life.
A year into restoration, with the help of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the financial relief that has been poured into Maui, the toxic debris has been cleared. The soil has been either revived or paved over. People can finally start thinking about rebuilding. And yet, while so much has been accomplished, we’re still a long way away from Lahaina residents being able to return home and fully restore their community.
Impactful ways to give back, from the heart of a local
Having been displaced from her Lahaina home by the Maui fires, Pamela Hiwahiwa Gillman offers the following ways to make a real impact and still enjoy your vacation to Maui.
Spread Aloha
Aloha has a rich cultural and spiritual meaning to Hawaii’s native people. Alo' translates to “in the presence,” and ha means “the breath of life.” Hawaiians understand the word “aloha'' to be a deep expression of emotion and respect. To spread Aloha is to extend warmth and a unique type of compassion and care. In Pamela’s words, “Aloha goes both ways. We share the same breath, we share the same air. My breath enters you, your breath enters me. We share it. We are both responsible for it.”
Travel Pono
What does it mean to Travel Pono? It’s a way to be a conscious visitor. According to the Sustainable Travel Association of Hawaii, to Travel Pono is to “travel consciously and to explore Hawai’i in a manner that is respectful of Native Hawaiian culture, wildlife, [the] environment, and local residents.”
Fly Hawaiian Airlines
Exercise Kuleana
Kuleana has two meanings: “a responsibility” (usually implied in your kuleana to take care of the environment), and “a right.” In this instance, right and responsibility are one and the same. You have a right to be here, and you have a responsibility to care for it. It goes both ways. Throughout your trip to Maui, equally enjoy and be aware—care for her in the best way that you can.
Voluntourism
Whether you’re visiting for a couple of days or enjoying an extended stay, there are endless opportunities to exercise your kuleana and give back to Maui. First, identify something important to you at home and find volunteer opportunities that are dedicated to that interest (i.e. if you’re interested in plants and gardening, find opportunities to volunteer on a farm). Below are carefully vetted organizations to consider:
1. Hawai’i Wildlife Fund: Protect native wildlife in Hawaii
2. Friends of Haleakala National Park: Help care for endangered plants by volunteering at the park’s plant nursery
3. Trilogy Excursions: Blue’Aina underwater and land reef cleanups
4. Hawaiian Land Trust: Multiple volunteer options, including Kāhili Beach Preserve cleanup, Waihe’e Coastal Dunes & Wetland Refuge land work, and more
5. Maui Food Bank: Help feed the hungry by packing and distributing food to Maui’s residents
Hawaiian Airlines is Hawaii’s biggest and longest-serving airline. Not only that, they are the leading provider of nonstop service from more U.S. gateway cities than any other airline. “I encourage people to use Hawaiian Airlines when they visit. Not only does the airline employ thousands of local people, but it has always given back to the community. Since the fires on Maui, Hawaiian Air has increased their commitment, quietly supporting us in many ways,” said Pamela. If you go to HawaiianAirlines.com, you’ll find an entire section dedicated to Travel Pono. There, you’ll see ways to Travel Pono—including lists of local businesses to support, vetted voluntourism opportunities, and so much more. A Push Toward Sustainable Tourism
How community-led tourism is creating a positive impact for both sustainable travelers and the places they go.
BY CALLIE MORROCCO
Aroundthe world, sustainable, community-led tourism is becoming increasingly popular. According to the 2023 Sustainable Travel Report by Booking.com, “Over three quarters (76%) of travelers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months.” Not only that, but according to the same survey, 76% of those travelers want more sustainable travel options. So, what exactly is community-led tourism and how is it leaving a positive impact—not only on tourists, but the communities and environments they visit? Let’s explore.
COMMUNITY-LED TOURISM
Since its inception in the 1970s, community-led tourism, otherwise known as community-based tourism (CBT), has gained widespread popularity as a tool for ecological, economic, and cultural prosperity. With an emphasis on alleviating poverty, along with protecting endangered habitats and ecosystems, community-led tourism poses as one of the few truly respectful ways to travel. It is a conscious form of tourism in which all efforts are created by local communities, ensuring that they maintain control over how tourism is developed and in what ways it will give back to their economy. This ensures prosperity is enjoyed and shared by both tourists and communities.
Traditional forms of tourism don’t always consider the well-being of each unique and colorful community folks travel to. Without sustainable and inclusive practices in place, mass tourism can be extremely harmful—putting stress on economies, land, habitats, and more. According to the World Eco-
nomic Forum, “communities worldwide often grapple with the challenges posed by the magnetic appeal of heritage sites and the promise of economic prosperity. Property values can increase, displacing local residents and permanently altering the character of their neighborhoods.” This gives rise to gentrification and pushes locals out of their own homes, often leading to difficulties finding housing and nearby work opportunities. When locals are left out of the equation, there’s often cultural appropriation, bringing the corruption of cultural practices and estrangement from centuries-old heritage to communities all around the world.
Alternatively, in the case of community-led tourism, the travelers’ experience is completely led and managed by local inhabitants—giving power back to Indigenous communities, alleviating poverty, and improving quality of life. With a more sustainably-oriented form of tourism, travelers can take a genuine look into the vibrant minds and practices of cultures they’re interested in. There are so many ways community-led tourism is leaving a positive impact on the communities they serve:
PRESERVING INDIGENOUS HERITAGE
What does it mean to preserve Indigenous heritage? National Geographic describes it as, “the community gets to decide how to protect the culture and environment on which it depends. So, the community benefits, the environment and local culture is safeguarded, and the resulting economic benefits stay within the community. Win-win-win.” When tourists get to experience
cultural programming, it’s often (if not always) guided and created by experts—locals who are second-, third-, or fourth-generation natives, having been taught these ancient practices and skill sets by their ancestors throughout their lives. These communities are showing a little part of who they are. It’s a gift from their hearts to the hearts of tourists. Actively seeking out sustainable, community-led tourism shows a deep appreciation and respect for Indigenous traditions.
PROTECTING NATURAL HABITATS
It gives communities the ability to include diverse and lesser-known sites for tourist programming—giving tourists the off-the-beaten-path experience they crave, while simultaneously alleviating over-crowding, pollution, and even destruction of historic sites along the way. In addition, a lot of community-led tourism efforts include opportunities to get the best of both worlds; learning and interacting with wildlife and their habitats while simultaneously saving endangered species and restoring ecosystems. For example, according to Scale Climate Action, “community-based rural tourism initiatives in Costa Rica have successfully contributed to forest conservation and improved livelihoods, while in Kenya, community-owned conservancies have helped protect wildlife and provide income and employment to locals.”
CREATING ECONOMIC GROWTH
Keeping jobs within the local community is another core principle of community-led tourism as it can bring a lot of income to a destination. It ensures
that natives maintain ownership of the tourism experience so that they’re compensated fairly and that they’re able to put that money back into the land, in more ways than one. Good Tourism Institute says, “Travelers spend money on accommodations, food, transportation, souvenirs, and activities, creating jobs and supporting local businesses. This economic boost can contribute to infrastructure development, public services, and overall economic growth." National Geographic agrees as they claim that the “buy local” mantra can be one of the most impactful ways to bring economic growth to tourist destinations worldwide.
HAVE COMMUNITY-LED TOURISM, WILL TRAVEL
Why do you travel? Maybe it’s simply an escape from everyday life. Or perhaps for you, travel is the ability to learn about different cultures, interact with locals, see new perspectives, and experience different ways of living. It’s about admiring new landscapes, tasting new foods, and creating memories that make a real lifelong impact. This is the true essence of community-led tourism. When done ethically, visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves within local cultures in authentic ways and do so in a safe and comfortable manner. Having access to witness Indigenous practices and the heartfelt expression of a community’s heritage gives travelers incredibly unique and enriching experiences. These once-in-a-lifetime opportunities are, ideally, inspiring enough to entice travelers back, or at least recommend their trip to friends and family back home. This perpetuates the healthy and beautiful cycle of sustainable, community-led tourism.

Traveling during the shoulder season not only offers a reprieve from the high temperatures and high costs of summer travel, but offers the unique opportunity to slow down and truly connect with local communities.
BY ABBIE MOOD
Whether you’re looking for pleasant weather, fewer crowds, unique local experiences, or better availability for your next family vacation, traveling during the shoulder season offers all that and more. This period typically encompasses the months just before and after the high tourist season (usually spring or fall), offering savvy travelers an ideal time to explore some of the most popular destinations in the world.
An added perk? Visiting a country during its shoulder season supports environmental and economic sustainability in several ways: you’ll put less of a strain on local resources, reduce overcrowding, contribute to distributing tourism income throughout the year, and help prevent overtourism of popular attractions and historical sites.
Whether it’s participating in a grape harvest in Greece, taking a flamenco class in Spain, or joining a conservation project in South Africa, here are five of our favorite spots for a shoulder season getaway.
Greece: Embrace Autumn in the Cyclades
If you’ve had Santorini and Mykonos on your list, the shoulder season is a dream come true: the summer crowds are gone, the water is warm, and it’s just you and the locals. Temperatures are mild and the days are sunny, making for perfectly relaxing beach days without the crowds. It’s also a good time to visit the lesser-known Naxos, known for its stunning landscapes and authentic Greek charm. It’s the largest island in the Cyclades, offering a variety of landscapes from mountain peaks and lush green valleys to dramatic cliffs and long, sandy beaches. You can’t miss the massive marble gate at the port, part of an unfinished temple dedicated to the god Apollo.
Grape and olive harvests take place in September and October, which means everyone from the smallest villages to the larger cities celebrate the year’s bounty with traditional dances, drinking, music, and fun—it’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself into Greek culture. There are even opportunities for tourists to participate in the traditional methods of grape and olive harvesting, taste the fruits of your labor (and products), and gain a deeper understanding of Greek agriculture.

Savor the Andalusian Spirit in the Spring
When you visit Spain in the shoulder season, popular destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and Granada are less crowded, allowing you to explore iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Familia, Alhambra, and Prado Museum without the long lines.
But if you’re looking for a true local shoulder season experience, head to the Andalusian region in the south. Take a local flamenco class to brush up on your dance skills and then join in on Feria de Abril (April Fair) in Seville. This weeklong event is a colorful celebration of Andalusian culture that takes place two weeks after Easter, featuring flamenco dancing, horse parades, bullfights, and casetas (private tents) where families and friends gather to eat, drink, and dance. Later in the month, Barcelona hosts the Feria de Abril de Cataluyna, also featuring flamenco music and dance, traditional Andalusian costumes, and vibrant parades to celebrate Andalusian culture in Catalonia.
Participate in the olive harvest in the province of Jaén, the world’s largest olive oil producer and home to more than 60 million olive trees. Harvest takes place from November until February or March, and anyone interested in oleotourism (tourism focusing around olive oil activities) can visit family-run mills to learn all about the production process, and can even participate in a “botifuera.” The botifuera festival takes place in the spring in many Andalusian villages with olive-growing traditions to celebrate the end of the olive harvest.
P orT u GA l: Explore the Magic without the Masses
The secret is out: Portugal packs a lot of punch for a small country, where you can immerse yourself in city life, spend time in nature, indulge in its rich food and wine culture, or take in the region’s history. December through April is the best time to experience the country and visit cities like Lisbon and Porto. You’ll be able to see the Praça do Comércio and Belém Tower in Lisbon or walk through the World of Wine cultural district in Porto—without fighting through summer crowds.
Spring is also a wonderful time to take a river cruise through the Duoro Valley, surrounded by terraced vineyards and lush rolling hills. Like Greece and Spain, fall is the best time to experience the wine harvest and sample incredible wines from centuries-old family-run wineries and vineyards.

Come for Dubrovnik, Stay for the Dalmatian Coast
Dubrovnik has long been a popular tourist destination, but its role in the filming of the TV show “Game of Thrones” helped the city skyrocket in popularity. Known for its well-preserved medieval walls and historic old town, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect jumping off point to visit the rest of the Dalmatian Coast.
The weather is a bit less predictable during the shoulder season (May and late September-October), and not all restaurants will be open, but visiting during this time of year offers the unique opportunity for a serene escape to this hotspot.
After Dubrovnik, visit Split to see Diocletian’s Palace, built in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and take a stroll along the Riva Promenade, lined with impressive palm trees and many restaurants. If you visit in the spring, island hop over to Hvar to see the lavender fields, visit the quarries in Brač where the stone for the White House came from, and wander the streets of Korčula to see Marco Polo’s home.
The coast is also known for its breathtaking nat-
ural scenery at Krka National Park, the cascading Skradinski buk, the lowest of the three sets of waterfalls along the Krka River. The park has several well-marked hiking trails, and boat cruises are a popular way to see its best sights, like the Visovac Monastery on Visovac Island, a Franciscan monastery dating back to the 15th century.

Serene Safari in Kruger National Park
What’s nice about visiting South Africa in the shoulder season is that the weather is the opposite of North America, which means late fall and early winter at Kruger National Park is April through June, aligning well with spring break and the beginning of summer break for families looking for a safari trip that doesn’t require missing school. The main tourist season is July through September, so avoiding those months means fewer crowds and a more relaxed safari experience. Temperatures are mild and comfortable, so you also avoid the extreme heat and cold during peak season.
Vegetation starts to thin out, improving visibility for game viewing, but the landscape is still relatively green from the summer rains. As the park transitions into the dry season, water sources become scarcer, which means animals start to congregate around remaining waterholes and rivers, increasing the chance that you’ll spot a variety of wildlife.
Shoulder season at Kruger National Park is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, and wildlife-based tourism that generates income and creates jobs is the key to protecting these animals and their habitats. Visitors can participate in various volunteer projects and experiences that allow them to participate in research projects, gain an understanding of Africa’s famous wildlife and the threats they face, and engage with the people and land in a meaningful way.

WEST COAST, BEST COAST
From sun-kissed beaches and towering redwoods to dynamic cities and tranquil wine country, California offers endless adventures for every traveler.
BY TANVI CHHEDA
The third-largest U.S. state in size, California conjures images of sun-kissed beaches, Napa’s grape vine-covered hills, L.A.’s Hollywood sign, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, and more. From the coastal redwoods in the north and Joshua trees dotting the desert in the south to the Spanish colonial buildings of Santa Barbara and mid-century modern houses of Palm Springs, the Golden State’s geography, history, and architecture are as diverse as could be.
California has long called to adventurers and dreamers, and in recent decades, the dynamic arts and food scenes in the larger cities have given visitors a new reason to journey westward. The state's allure isn't confined to any single experience: whether you're exploring a tiny section of California or embarking on a more ambitious road trip, the Golden State has a way of getting under your skin and staying there—in the best way possible.
Secluded Black Sands Beach, part of the wild and undeveloped Lost Coast in Humboldt County in Northern California.
Northern California’s Mendocino County and the Redwoods
Few travelers to California make it farther north than the San Francisco Bay area, assuming there isn't much more to take in along the 300-plus miles until the Oregon border. This assumption is all the better for the rest of us. Lesser-known Mendocino County offers dramatic coastal headlands and incredible wine, while neighboring Humboldt County impresses with its ancient redwoods. Canoe a portion of the Big River, a seven-mile-long tidal estuary by morning; then visit Anderson Valley’s sustainability-minded Pennyroyal Farm come afternoon for an elegant spread of vino, goat cheese, fruit, and crudités. Kids (and adults,
too) will especially love the non-alcoholic grape juice, which can only be described as liquid candy. In Humboldt County, the town of Eureka affords easy access to the neighboring beaches and parks, including Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Be sure to save some time to stroll the town of Ferndale, a quaint village of well-preserved Victorian houses.
San Francisco
The Golden Gate Bridge. Alcatraz. Cable cars. Lombard Street. The Ferry Building. Fisherman’s Wharf. San Francisco has plenty of iconic sights, not to mention parks, museums, and a lengthy list of must-try restaurants (Sri Lankan-inflected Copra, Empress by Boon, James Beard award-winning trattoria Delfina, Besharam, and Tartine Manufactory, to name a few). Vegans will love Wildseed and Shizen vegan sushi bar and izakaya, too. While in town, earmark a morning or afternoon to wander the Presidio national park site, where the scent of eucalyptus wafts through the air. The 1,500-acre park once served as an army post, but has been since flourished with nature trails, a 600-seat theatre, and golfing. Families will also want to hit museums such as the California Academy of Sciences and Exploratorium, a hands-on laboratory of learning with 600 interactive exhibits. Art buffs, meanwhile, can take in works by Georgia O’Keefe and Edward Ruscha at the de Young Museum.
It would be remiss to skip San Francisco’s lantern-festooned Chinatown, where dim sum joints, tea rooms, and trinket shops line the streets. Another day, stroll the foodie stalls at the Ferry Building for edible souvenirs before hopping on a boat across the bay to Sausalito, a two-mile-long artsy enclave with spectacular views of San Francisco’s skyline.

Napa and Sonoma Wine Country
It was Franciscan monks who likely planted the first vines in the Sonoma area in the 1820s, while in neighboring Napa, pioneer George Calvert Yount (for whom the town of Yountville is named) cultivated grapes in 1839. Though the history may be hazy, it’s more than evident that grapes have long grown in this part of California, transforming it into one of the world’s premier wine-producing regions. Today, Napa’s bold cabs and Sonoma’s crisp chardonnays and fruit-forward pinots are the stuff of legend. Some of the top wineries to visit include Opus One, Domaine Carneros, Stag’s Leap, Flowers, Iron Horse, Robert Young—the list goes on. Be sure to also visit some of Inspirato’s wine partners including Tamber Bey, Majuscule, Three Sticks, Comstock, and Blue Rock. Along with the vino, there are several
Michelin-starred restaurants worth a visit, like Auberge du Soleil (with mouthwatering dishes such as orange-glazed butternut squash and artichoke risotto) and SingleThread (featuring a kaiseki-inspired 10-course menu); inviting towns to stroll (St. Helena and Healdsburg); and a host of special experiences from hot air ballooning to mud baths in Calistoga.
Given the area’s agricultural bounty, you’ll want to tour a few farms, too: 12-acre Connolly Ranch, goat dairy Redwood Hill Farm, and Lavender Bee. Or head into the forest for hikes among the ancient giants at the 805-acre Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Choosing where to stay may be the hardest part, though Inspirato’s multi-bedroom farmhouse-style estate rentals certainly make it easier.
Santa Barbara and the Central Coast
Quietly charming and relaxed, Santa Barbara’s coastal perch and year-round mild temps have earned it the nickname, the American Riviera. With dozens of Spanish colonial revival buildings, the city’s downtown is home to an urban wine trail with 25 wineries and tasting rooms; museums such as the MOXI, where interactive science and arts await; as well as a fabulous weekend farmers market showcasing juicy Gaviota strawberries, wild sage honey, roasted almonds, olives, and much more. Restaurants such as vegetari-
an-friendly Satellite and Oliver’s Kitchen excel at highlighting the region’s bounty. And families love the Santa Barbara Zoo, where animal encounters (feed a giraffe and delight in its purple tongue wrapping around lettuce leaves!) and a train ride are sure to enthrall littles.
From Santa Barbara, it’s also possible to explore the rest of the scenic Central Coast. Stretching from the darling towns of Los Olivos and Danish-influenced Solvang in the Santa Ynez Valley
to San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, there are enough vineyards, hikes, and beaches to fill a week. In Los Olivos’ lively, tasting room-lined downtown, be sure to visit the Bubble Shack, an appropriately named sparkling wine tasting room. Farther north, near San Simeon, Hearst Castle is publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst’s historic estate, designed by architect Julia Morgan. Take a guided tour of the opulent interiors as well as the showstopping marble and serpentine-tiled outdoor pool.

Los Angeles
It’s true that sprawling L.A. isn’t the easiest to navigate, but those with patience and perseverance are rewarded in spades. From the city’s ambitious contemporary art scene to its culinary boom to outdoor adventures starring ocean views, there’s undoubtedly something for everyone here. Beloved for their coastal setting, the beachy enclaves of Malibu, Santa Monica, and Venice are requisite stops. Spend the morning meandering through the Getty Villa, a breathtaking hillside museum dedicated to Greek and Roman art (and sister to the Getty Center) and follow with a lunch of zucchini pizza and banh mi-inspired tacos at Malibu Farm along the pier.
In Venice, Abbot Kinney Boulevard makes for lovely window shopping and people watching, not to mention donuts (Blue Star!) and ice cream (Salt & Straw’s honey lavender!). Edgy and ever evolving, downtown boasts a strong concentration of L.A.’s top eats, including Baar Baar, Girl & the Goat, and Hayato (Japanese omakase). The colossal Broad contemporary art museum, with works such as Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog and Keith Haring’s Red Room, is also one not to miss; or consider a walking tour of downtown’s beautiful art deco and Streamline Moderne buildings with a guide from the Los Angeles Conservancy.
Adjacent to UCLA, the recently expanded Hammer Museum in Westwood displays American paintings and site-specific installations, and houses a market-driven restaurant, Lulu, in collaboration with Alice Waters. No L.A. visit would be complete without cocktails at a rooftop bar, and not to worry—the Pendry West Hollywood’s BAR at Merois has you covered.
San Diego
Sunny and laidback, San Diego has grown up into a thriving and sophisticated city in the last decade. There’s still 70 miles of stunning coastline to explore, but also food, art, and culture. Begin at Balboa Park, built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and anchored by an ornate 198-foot-tall tower. The 1,200-acre park is home to 18 museums, numerous gardens, and the world-class San Diego Zoo (book the twohour Inside Look golf cart tour for special access to animal habitats). At dinnertime, head to the Alila Encinitas’ VAGA Restaurant, opened by female chef Claudette Zepeda. Plant-based diners, meanwhile, will relish plates of chimichurri-laced seitan skewers and battered mush-
rooms with yuzu and dill at Kindred in the South Park neighborhood. Wash it all down with the pretty Flower Moon cocktail, made with gin, bergamot orange, and Thai cherry. Meanwhile, at Oceanside’s zero waste The Plot, the scrumptious menu includes grilled cabbage with pink peppercorn and Okinawan sweet potato gnocchi.
Known for its luxurious amenities, ranging from an award-winning spa, on-site golf course, and the three Michelin 3-star restaurant Addison, a stay at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar is an ideal spot to rest your head.
Clockwise from top left: The canals of Venice in L.A.; Wide and powdery Santa Monica beach; Rugged cliffs at Tamarack State Beach in northern San Diego; The San Diego skyline.
Palm Springs and Joshua Tree
Soak up the desert light and starry skies in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree, an easy road trip from Los Angeles. Once the preferred hang out of the Rat Pack’s Frank Sinatra, Palm Springs’ mid-century modern architecture, canyon hikes, golfing, and pool parties still draw plenty of travelers today. Ogle houses built by Richard Neutra, John Lautner, Albert Frey, and William Krisel on a bike tour with PS Architecture Tours; hike past cascading waterfalls and shady palm tree groves in the Indian Canyons, the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians; or take in modern photography and sculpture at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Design forward and inventive, Workshop Kitchen+Bar is the place to eat while in
the area. Order one of everything—beets with citrus and date labneh, shaved Brussels sprouts with sorrel and plum, scarlet runner beans with black garlic and tomato—and dig in.
Farther east sits otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park, where the native namesake looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book with outstretched branches featuring spiky fronds. The park’s Hidden Valley and Barker Dam trails are great from scrambling on boulders, while the Cholla Cactus Garden is a flat boardwalk trail through bushes of blonde-hued teddy-bear cholla. During summer nights, the park is especially popular for spectacular meteor shower viewings.

Provençal The Harvest
Southern France’s hillside cuisine proves the allure of every season offers something special
BY MEGAN LLOYD
Peering through the church arches overlooking Bonnieux.
Aside from unprecedented charm, there are a few things travelers have grown to expect from a quintessential European hamlet: an actual local population, the ever-present smell of chimney smoke, and excellent regional cuisine. On a recent trip to southern France’s hillside villages of Provence, I found several spots that checked all of the boxes— and then some.
Each morning in Bonnieux, a village a little more than one hour north of Marseille, was joyously met with the promise of a fresh pastry and a flicker of sun peeking through the stone window of my accommodation. I would walk to the town’s “boulangerie” (bakery)— the faint smell of burning wood accompanying me down the street— and was regularly rewarded with a smattering of warm laminated doughs. I savored them almost worshipfully; my fellow church-goers were the townspeople and their dogs. One morning a spry Frenchman popped in on his bike and stuffed a few fresh baguettes into his cycling jacket.
I so effortlessly relaxed into the rhythms of Provençal village life, I hardly noticed the shift. But the moment I walked out into the crisp fall morning for that first croissant in Bonnieux, my whole body seemed to exhale. I had come in November, which is creeping dangerously into the off-season for a region heralded for its early summer lavender blooms. But after a week exploring the villages and feasting on Provence’s freshly picked bounty, nothing about the season seemed off.
From top: A fig almond tart from a Gordes bakery; The Gordes hillside.
My first proper Provençal meal commenced at a cozy hideaway in Goult, a bitesized village in the Luberon Valley just a 10-minute drive from Bonnieux. As I made my way up the hill, adapting to narrow mountain roads that defied conceptions of space, I couldn’t help but stop to take in the fiery hues of the valleys below. I had seen vineyards around the world in many seasons, but the post-harvest vines bathed in a luminous gold proved unfamiliar. Watching them be laid to rest— the leaves slowly releasing into poetic seasonal decay— was anything but tragic.
One of just a handful of restaurants in Goult, La Bartavelle is a family-run establishment helmed by
husband-and-wife team Sylvie and Emmanuel Champion. I would soon discover that their three-course hyper-seasonal menu offerings are a delightful norm here in Provence.
“About 90% of our product is purchased locally,” Sylvie’s daughter translated to me from her mother’s French. And by locally they mean the cheesemaker and the baker are right around the corner, and Emmanuel shops the small produce markets and farms in surrounding villages daily. After browsing a few roadside farm stands myself that morning, the evidence was on the plate: an amuse bouche of feathery squash and roasted chestnut soup, scallops perched on cauliflower risotto in a ginger broccoli cream, guinea fowl coated in an earthy porcini mushroom jus, and the most exquisite, brow-furrowing pear tart I had ever tasted.
Every chef worth talking about seemed to be following this strict adherence to the seasons. At Domitia in Beaumettes, a one-street deadend village, Jérôme Faure and his partner Laurence Collet followed suit. The restaurant is unassuming until you learn Faure was awarded his first Michelin star at the age of 29 up in the French Alps and received another a few years later at a spot he and Laurence helped open in Luberon. Domitia, however, is their own brainchild, which they conceived right after the pandemic. Now they’re not after any stars, just inventive, out-of-the-box
cooking celebrating the land around them.
“He cooks with a lot of emotion, albeit a bit crazy in his approach,” said Laurence, looking fondly at Faure. Menus are built on the availability of the local providers and change every single day.
“People who have been coming here for the past two years have never tasted the same thing,” says Faure. It’s a shame knowing no one will ever again savor that flaky snowy carrelet fish with crispy mustard greens and punchy marinated plums. But it’s also a privilege.
From Top Fall’s finest apple harvest; Provençal abundance at a roadside market; The team at La Bartavelle before lunch service.
Even the most lauded chefs in the region cook with a natural instinct that elevates the terrain. At Villa La Coste, less than half an hour north of Aix-en Provence, six-time Michelin-starred chef Hélène Darroze structures her tasting menus around the produce and the producer. The first course, “An Homage to Our Gardeners from Provence,” is a display of seasonal vegetables prepared according to a vigorous study on the optimal way to serve each. It turns out kale is best served crispy and bok choy grilled. “I am very passionate about vegetables,” said Darroze. “Provence for me is the country of vegetables, so it made sense for me to work around the vegetables and to put them as the main ingredients of the dish with the protein as the garnish.”
One of the main courses at Villa La Coste, titled “Celeriac,” was the most exquisite preparation of celery root I have yet to encounter. Normally as big as a cantaloupe, this particular variety
was barely the size of a child’s fist. Darroze’s process of cooking it low and slow yields such delicate results that the vegetable is served with its tender stems, leaves, and root tendrils intact. The local grilled sea bass was the welcomed accompaniment, ladled with a bright yuzu kosho and caviar beurre blanc.
The entire Villa La Coste experience draws diners beyond the table and onto the land to experience another form of art. The estate on which the restaurant resides, Château La Coste, is also home to a luxury hotel, organic vineyard, small vegetable farm, and outdoor sculpture museum where visitors can hike a roughly two-hour trail marked with pieces by renowned artists like Louise Bourgeois and Ai Weiwei. The forested trek is seamlessly connected to the dining experience, inviting you to put your feet in the dirt, walk among the vines, and explore a different medium of artistry.
Clockwise from top left: Sweet bites and caffeine to finish a meal at Villa La Coste; Villa La Coste’s sleek restaurant floating on the hills; Darroze’s signature armangac soaked baba and pear; The Louise Bourgeois sculpture included in the property’s impressive collection; Garden carrots and prawns.
One could easily sustain the entirety of their Provençal vacation on sumptuous multi-course meals, but I heeded chef Emmanuel Champion’s words and paid a visit to a small morning farmers market in the town of Apt, eight miles northeast of Bonnieux. Provence is widely known for its abundance of outdoor markets and is the source of inspiration for many chefs. The markets take place almost every day of the week in different towns throughout the growing seasons.
While it was the tail end of November, there was no shortage of picnic provisions in Apt: fresh chèvre in every size and herbed coating, squashes and brassicas and loads of wrangled root vegetables, crates of glistening olives
waiting to be brined, just-pressed apple juices in dozens of varietals, and lines of cured sausages and salted hams. I fell privy to a roaming crepe cart, Le Creperie Vagabond, whose buckwheat “gallette du jour” (savory crepe of the day) highlighted market specials like creamy endive, smoky sausage, and comté cheese, along with sweet versions finished with homemade salted caramel.
Of course, not everyone wants to grocery shop or sauté broccolini on vacation. Luckily the stream of boulangeries and patisseries throughout the towns turn out fresh baguettes and crusty sourdoughs for that fresh chèvre, along with cheesy leek quiches, and such a splendid splay of seasonal fruit tarts and flaky pastries that I prayed for extra stomach.
My final return to the indulgent multi-course lunch was to an old stone farmhouse outside the village of Gordes. At Le Mas, a fire roared alongside me while chef Alexis Osmont delivered a succinct offering of traditional Provençal dishes with creative touches. A quick glance at the menu didn’t scream garden-
forward, but every dish proved Osmont’s dedication to local farmers. The beef daube, a classic regional dish he can’t take off the menu (he was featured cooking it on a French TV show), contained such a mélange of vegetables— artichokes, fennel, bok choy, and watermelon radishes to name a few— that each bite of spoon-tender beef felt like a new discovery. “I’m not strict with traditional recipes,” he says. “I practically never know what I’m serving from one day to the next. I may even change things from lunch to dinner.”
From left: Fall in bloom at a typical Provençal cafe; Dusk settling onto Gordes; Black olives ripening outside Le Mas restaurant.
A full stomach—did I mention the buttery olive tapenade, the squash and escargot soup with pomegranate, or the apple almond tart?—and perfect afternoon sunlight beckoned me for an after-lunch stroll along the tranquil backroads of Le Mas. I wandered along family farms and vineyards, olive groves shimmering with jet black fruits, and brilliant oaks beginning to shed their auburn leaves.
There seemed to be no divide between this humble countryside stroll and the farmto-table meal in my belly. Fall in all its bounty was alive and well in the kitchen next door; the land and the farmers and the cooks work side by side to create the delicious symbiosis that is the Provençal table. The season was just the canvas. I didn’t miss the lavender fields.

Across Thailand A Dream Trip
Experience vibrant cities, cultural heritage, and serene islands on an unforgettable journey through the Land of Smiles.
BY TANVI CHHEDA
From bustling cities to dense forests to powdery beaches, Thailand enchants with urban delights, immense natural beauty, ancient temples, delectable food and fruits (mango, lychee and papaya to name a few), and its welcoming people (hence the nickname, Land of Smiles). The geographic diversity, regional customs and spicy cuisine make the country an ideal first foray into Southeast Asia. It’s no surprise that some 28 million foreign travelers visited Thailand last year alone.
Most itineraries begin in Bangkok, where “tuk tuk” (auto rickshaw with three wheels) horns blare, incense wafts within centuries-old Buddhist temples, and spicy galangal and kaffir limelaced foods tingle on the tongue. Bursting at the seams, the Thai capital is a perfect introduction to the sensory overload to come. From there, head north to the mountains and river valleys of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to learn more about
Lanna culture and spend some quality time with pachyderms at a conservation-minded elephant camp. The country’s second-largest city, Chiang Mai is also particularly noteworthy for its festivals such as Songkran when idols are bathed with rosewater and locals joyously soak one another to symbolically wash away sins and ward off bad luck. Complete your Thai odyssey with a few days on the blissful, sandy beaches along the islands of the south. (There are over 1,400 islands in Thailand, though most are uninhabited.) The warm, turquoise waters are perfect for families ready to play, couples looking to unplug, and adventure seekers keen to dive.
Lying in the tropics, Thailand has a hot and balmy climate throughout the year. The best time to visit are the drier winter months of November through February, when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable.
Bangkok
A frenetic city of nearly 11 million, Bangkok juxtaposes the old and new at every turn. Gleaming towers and soaring high-rises sit next door to ancient Buddhist shrines and temples. At night, markets come alive with stalls selling all manner of delicious salads, stir-fried noodles, and steamed dumplings; meanwhile, trendy rooftop bars such as black-and-gold-swathed Stella, overlooking the Chao Phraya River, draw a well-heeled, international crowd. The historic Jim Thompson House Museum celebrates the legacy and revival of Thai silk as avant-garde galleries look to the future of art.
Once referred to as the Venice of the East, Bangkok was originally built on stilts over the water. Today, several luxury hotels have found a perch along the city’s riverside. There’s the 101-room Capella, with its contemporary design and Michelin-starred restaurant, and the 299-room Four Seasons, a sleek newcomer with an artfilled lobby and expansive spa. Part of Bangkok-based Minor Hotels’ portfolio, Anantara also boasts an impressive riverfront property that’s a favorite of families thanks to its lovely central pool and courtyard. An expert in all things Asia, tour operator Remote Lands can easily arrange a guide (as well as transport around the city) to take in key sights such as The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), as well as local spots such as the bustling flower market, worth a visit simply to observe and try the delicate art of folding lotus petals. A sprawling complex, The Grand Palace served as the residence for Thailand’s royal family until recently. Marvel at the gilded palace buildings and be sure to step into the peaceful Temple of the Emerald Buddha with its 26-inch-tall jade idol. Included as part of admission is a masked dance performance based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, held at a nearby theater, that’s absolutely a mustwatch. (Though largely Buddhist, Thailand has a strong Hindu influence, too, from India.)
Tucked away along a narrow lane facing a canal, the Jim Thompson House Museum comprises six traditional teakwood buildings and features the incredible Asian art collection of late Jim Thompson, an American businessman who revived the Thai silk industry. Take in the architecture, Thai paintings, Chinese ceramics, Buddhist sculptures, and more during a 45-minute guided tour.
Chiang Mai
In the mountains of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai was once the capital of the independent Kingdom of Lanna, translating to “Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields.” With its own language and rich culture—including architecture, crafts and textiles, dance, and food—the Lanna way of life thrived for centuries in this landlocked heartland until the Burmese invaded the area. Eventually, regional princes and Thai militia fought to regain control and soon thereafter, Chiang Mai was annexed by Siam. Travelers can still glimpse the vestiges of Chiang Mai’s early glory days as a flourishing cultural center: among them, a walled Old City with dozens of Lanna-style temples featuring steeply pitched roofs, golden “chedi” (stupas holding the relics of kings and monks), stonework, and intricate stencil drawings.
There are more than 300 Buddhist temples in and around Chiang Mai. Tour and pay homage at these ancient sites including Wat Chiang Man, built in 1296 and featuring a dramatic stupa chiseled with elephant-shaped heads, and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, sitting atop a mountain and accessed by climbing a brick staircase adorned with serpent heads at its base. Visitors are encouraged to make offerings of lotus flowers and circle the temple’s stupa three times. Two more important temples in Chiang Mai are Wat Chedi Luang, with an imposing stone stupa, and Wat Phra Singh, known for a lion Buddha image that lost its original head. Be sure to also stroll the Old City’s warren of streets, where countless cafés and boutiques have since popped up.
After a day of exploring, return to the resort-like Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, which feels like an oasis amid the urban surroundings. The recently renovated property offers spacious suites, a stunning spa (a Thai massage is a must!), and beautiful lap pool overlooking the river; as well as an indoor-outdoor restaurant under the shade of a giant fig tree, where the menu includes khao soi, a tangy Northern curry noodle dish topped with crispy shallots and dried chilies. Guests will also appreciate the nightly live music (a soloist plays melodiously on a “khim,” an Asian percussion-stringed instrument) and dance performances on the lawn.
Clockwise from top left: Bangkok's Marble temple; twin stupas at sunset within the Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai; serpent heads at the base of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai; the Bangkok skyline and popular Lumpini Park.
Chiang Rai
Surrounded by mist-shrouded mountains, teak forests, and fertile river valleys, Chiang Rai is Thailand’s northernmost province. Where three countries converge – Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand – the region is also aptly named the Golden Triangle with the Mekong River cutting through it. En route from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, most travelers stop at Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple for its entirely white-washed exterior. Equal parts eerie and ambitious, the temple was the design of Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. For most travelers, the primary reason to visit Chiang Rai are sanctuary-like elephant camps where visitors can spend time observing and walking with these gentle giants. According to legend, Maha Maya, the mother of Gautama Buddha, dreamed of a white elephant when she conceived the Buddha, and thus, elephants have long been sacred to Thai people. In modern times though, as Thailand’s forests and jungles shrink, elephants continue to face challenges from habitat loss and human-animal conflict.
Anantara Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai stands out for its deep commitment to raise awareness and take steps toward conservation due to its work with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (established by Anantara’s parent company Minor Hotels in 2005). The 61-room property sits on 160 acres and has established a mahout village where some 20 rescued elephants and their caretaker families live. Guests can accompany the elephants on their daily walks through the grounds and to the river, where watching them sling mud and splash around is an incredibly magical moment. Families with children will especially love learning all about their biology and behavior along the way, too, i.e. elephants sweat through their toes and use their ears not only to cool off, but also to show emotion. In recent years, Anantara debuted safari tent-like clear canvas-covered “bubbles” that allow guests to spend the evening in the jungle for a once-in-a lifetime experience of intimately watching elephants munch from nearby branches and listening to their trumpeting sounds as night descends. On elevated platforms, the jungle bubbles also feature outdoor dining tables and plunge pools. Lastly, the hotel’s on-site culinary school is a highlight not to miss for private cooking classes. Start with a morning visit to the local market to source ingredients and return to prepare delicacies such as lemongrass-spiked tom kha soup, peanut-sprinkled pad Thai, veggie-loaded green curry and mango sticky rice from scratch.
Sadly, many of Thailand’s most popular isles, including Phuket, Koh Samui, and the Phi Phis, are suffering from the effects of overtourism. Instead, opt for the quieter Koh Yao islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, both a short speed boat ride from Phuket. Dotted with fishing villages and plenty of interior jungle (if luck is on your side, you’ll catch a sight of the unique hornbill), this largely untouched pair of islands is the perfect finish to an action-packed trip across Thailand.
On Koh Yao Noi, the gorgeous, sustainability-minded Six Senses is an all-villa property with 56 one- and two-bedroom thatched villas, each boasting their own private infinity-edge pool. From the breathtaking digs to an on-site yoga pavilion, Thai boxing classes and spa treatments galore, it’s easy to see why guests rarely leave the premises. (The Thai herbal massage using warm poultices containing ginger, turmeric, and lemongrass is particularly stress relieving.) On sister Koh Yao Yai island, the year-old Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort includes butler service with its 148 suites, penthouses, and villas. Family suites, featuring stylish bunk beds with wooden slides, are particularly popular for parents with children; not to mention a kids’ club that offers batik painting, gardening, and beach activities. For further exploration, kayak through the island’s mangroves to spot macaque monkeys, or snorkel and spy colorful reef fish and rays. Soaking up the sun on the secluded stretch of beach with a book in hand is no less a pursuit. Both properties can also arrange yacht charters for a day of island hopping, including stops at James Bond island, immortalized by Roger Moore in “The Man with the Golden Gun” or Panak Island, known for its stalactites, caves, and lagoons. Or then again, you could always hit the spa for hydrotherapy and the Moroccan hammam—there’s no bad way to enjoy a vacation in the Land of Smiles.

SOUTHERN
SOUTHERN BELLES
A Journey Through Music, Cuisine, History, and Nature
BY TANVI CHHEDA
Practically a country unto itself, the southeastern U.S. features a regional culture and distinctive food heritage, along with a complicated history, all its own.
There’s no doubt the Southeast is having a moment of both reckoning and rebirth. In the last decade, cities such as Asheville, Savannah, and Nashville, among others, have emerged as top destinations for better understanding our nation’s role in slavery; for outdoor adventures in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains; for country music and jazz; and for rising culinary and cocktail scenes showcasing the local bounty and global fare. Whether as a multi-stop road trip through the Southeast, or as individual visits, these cities should be on every traveler’s list.
Charleston
For History and Stroll-worthy Streets
It’s no secret that Charleston is impossibly charming with a walkable, cobblestoned downtown and well-preserved mansions with flowerboxes and decorative ironwork. Still, there’s more than meets the eye. Thanks to its natural harbor, the city was established as a center of commerce and trade (namely in rice and indigo). Continued efforts to reckon with this history led to the opening of the year-old International African American Museum along Gadsden's Wharf, the point of entry for some 40% of all enslaved persons who came to the U.S. At Boone Hall Plantation, known for its live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, visitors can see nine original slave quarter buildings and learn about the Gullah Geechee culture—language, music, crafts (particularly sweetgrass basket weaving) and food—that emerged out of the city’s violent past.
To its credit, Charleston is realizing that its history, culture, outdoors, and food all coexist and comingle. Of the seven(!) million annual visitors that make their way to The Holy City, many are also
keen to partake in the lively food and drink scene. Two newcomers are supper club-style Honeysuckle Rose, offering an exquisite eight-course pre-frixe menu with wine pairings, and pint-sized Kultura, where the Filipino-inflected brunch menu includes ube ganache-filled croissants and pancit noodles spiked with calamansi (a kumquat-like citrus native to the Philippines).
“I wanted to show Charleston what Filipino food is, what I grew up eating, and I’m just glad the city is embracing it,” notes Kultura chef-owner Nikko Cagalanan. After some delectable meals, rest your head at pretty hotels such as the 21-room Wentworth Mansion, with Tiffany-stained glass windows, fireplaces, and intricate woodwork; well-located Charleston Place, with its refined, signature restaurant Charleston Grill; or newer boutique property, The Palmetto, along Bay Street. For a night cap, there’s no better place than the backroom speakeasy at Last Saint (if you know, you know).

Nashville
For Country Music and Rising Star Chefs
In north central Tennessee, Nashville is proving there’s more to Music City than honky tonks, cowboy boots, barbecue, and whiskey. (Not that any of those are bad.) An influx of new residents, along with a crop of design-forward hotels and inventive eats, are part of Nashville’s latest evolution. Much of the action is concentrated in downtown Nashville’s walkable neighborhoods such as SoBro (south of Broadway) along the Cumberland River and adjacent Cumberland Gulch. Here, hotels such as the riverfront Four Seasons, featuring sprawling rooms and a rooftop pool; sustainability-minded 1 Hotel, with a fantastic spa; and 297-room Joseph, with a Michelin-starred chef and killer art collection, have all opened doors in recent years.
Of course, music is still a major draw, including the expansive Country Music Hall of Fame’s collection of more than two million artifacts, and venues such as the Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry, Bluebird Cafe, and newer Analog. But the city’s art and architecture shouldn’t be overlooked, either. Among a few requisite stops: the Frist Art Museum, set in a historic art deco-style post office building (pick up a few Olive & Sinclair chocolate bars in the gift shop); the Parthenon within Centennial Park, modeled after the original in Athens and boasting a gilded 42-foot-tall Athena statue; and the 55-acre Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, comprising a Georgian-style mansion and 13 immaculately kept gardens.
As for the city’s food scene, it has, arguably, never been more exciting. At Audrey, helmed by chef Sean Brock, feast on fried apples with yuzu, sorrel, and buckwheat and grits with scallops and sour corn in an art-filled dining room. Meanwhile, Tailor, from Vivek Surti in the Germantown neighborhood, gives Indian fare from the state of Gujarat the supper club treatment. Wash it all down with the fruit tea punch, made with bourbon, orange, lemon, pineapple, and black tea.

Asheville
For Waterfall Hikes and Global Cuisine
In western North Carolina, tucked within the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has gotten significant attention as of late for its arts scene, craft breweries, and inventive eats, as well as countless outdoor pursuits. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping at the Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell overlooks, or arrange a guided waterfall hike in the 10,000-acre DuPont State Recreational Forest with the female-owned Blue Ridge Hiking Company. Sample beers and dig into beet hummus and asparagus-spring onion pizza at the sprawling Sierra Nevada taproom in nearby Mills River. Pop into galleries and glass-blowing studios in the River Arts district, stopping for a pastry and coffee at artisanal bakery, Mother, along the way. Spend a morning wandering the rooms and grounds of the chateau-style Biltmore, a grand estate built by George W. Vanderbilt as a summer retreat, opening in 1895. If your time is limited, enjoy the gardens, meticulously designed by none other than Frederick Law Olmsted, who had previously created the landscape plans for New York’s Central Park.
It would be remiss to make it to this corner of the country and not dine at some of the city’s top restaurants. Among them: Chai Pani, which dishes out scrumptious Indian street food-inspired fare such as okra fries and aloo chaat (fried potato fritters topped with tamarind and cilantro chutneys, yogurt, and crunchy chickpea noodles). In 2022, the casual eatery bagged the James Beard award for Most Outstanding Restaurant in the U.S., catapulting chef-owner Meherwan Irani into culinary stardom. “To me, there is no other food that captures the essence of India like street food—chaotic, colorful, innovative, vibrant, joyful, complex, and of course delicious,” Irani shares. Other notable eats around town include Posana, Plant, and Vortex Doughnuts (the apple fritters are a must).

Savannah
For Design and Strong Cocktails
Along Georgia’s coast, darling Savannah feels suspended in a time when debutante balls and horse-drawn carriages were de rigueur. Originally established as a buffer between Colonial Charleston and Spanish-controlled Florida, Savannah was planned as an orderly grid of 22 charming squares lined with historic Georgian, Federal, and Regency-style mansions. A 90-minute walking tour with Jonathan Stalcup of Architectural Tours of Savannah is a terrific introduction to these elegant buildings. Several of them are museums today such as the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Join the 45-minute guided tour to learn more about the complex relationships between the city’s wealthy owners and those they enslaved.
Thanks in part to the Savannah College of Art & Design, or SCAD as it's fondly known, the arts continue to be a major draw to this Southern city as well. Part gallery, part boutique, shopSCAD is a destination for design buffs, showcasing works and wares by current and former students as well as faculty. Also worth visiting is
the Telfair Academy, housing 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings, sculpture and decorative arts (as well as the iconic Bird Girl statue made famous on the cover of John Berendt’s novel, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”). Perhaps as no surprise, Savannah has also quickly emerged as a culinary and cocktail powerhouse in recent times. Snag a table at Common Thread, where chef Brandon Carter’s thoughtful menu includes yellowfin tuna toast and gnocchi with sugar snap peas and crème fraiche. Follow with fabulous libations such as the Forsyth Park at dark (made with whiskey, blackberries, and mint) at cocktail bar Artillery, a sight to behold with a Moorish and Gothic exterior giving way to marble tabletops and velvet banquettes inside. For drinks with a view, the rooftop at the Thompson Savannah, part of the newly developed Plant Riverside district, is one of the best spots in town. The top address for a stay though remains Perry Lane Hotel, with 167 tastefully appointed rooms and an outstanding art collection.

New Orleans
For Architecture and Jazz
Playwright Tennessee Williams once famously said, “America only has three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland.” Maybe it was the wrought iron balconies, jazz music, and Sazeracs (believed to be invented by Creole apothecary Antoine Amedee Peychaud in 1838), he was referring to. Undeniably magical, the Big Easy, as the city is often called, boasts rich culture, architecture, music, and food. Founded by the French, passed onto and ruled by the Spanish, and later bought by the United States, New Orleans was always an attractive port with a network of rivers, bayous, and bays for carrying sugar and cotton on steamboats destined for far flung markets.
The wealth of that commerce can be seen in the ornate mansions of the French Quarter and Garden District. Appreciate the elegance and architecture on a walking tour with NOLA Tours, learning not only about the Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne styles, but also plenty of secrets and stories along the way. And for a taste of the arts, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, showcasing paintings, photography, sculptures, and crafts by artists in the Southern states, and 11-acre Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, with works by Auguste Rodin, Frank Stella, and Isamu Noguchi, are also musts. But if there’s only one place you visit while in NOLA, let it be Preservation Hall, a one-room live jazz venue dating back to 1961, a time when it was rare for racially integrated bands and audiences to share music together. From traditional jazz, move onto craft cocktails. There’s of course, the legendary, still rotating Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone (order the Vieux Carré), but also hot spots such as the Cure, Bar Marilou, Fives, and Chandelier Bar at the new 276-room Four Seasons.

Manifest Mexico in Los Cabos: Where the Desert Meets the Sea
BY CLARKE WATSON
Exploring the best of Baja.
Just off the coast of the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, rocky outcroppings breach the salty waters and reveal an archway known simply as El Arco. For centuries, this iconic landmark—signifying where the vast Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez—was a beacon of hope for sailors. Those who laid eyes on El Arco knew it was their portal to paradise—they had finally arrived at Los Cabos.
It's a region defined by contrast, where the cool coastal breeze intermingles with hot, desert winds and the sun-drenched mountains shed their ruggedness to embrace the sandy beaches and crystal-clear shoreline. Elements converge as the desert meets the sea creating a landscape like no other, where arid, earthy hues compliment the seemingly endless vistas of turquoise waters and palm trees gently swaying in the wind.
Home to some of Mexico’s most coveted coastline, Los Cabos consists of two bustling seaside towns. Twenty miles of beachfront bliss separate Cabo San Lucas in the south from the neighboring community of San Jose Del Cabo just up the coast. Although close in proximity, these complementary beach getaways each have their own unique charm and allure.
Cabo San Lucas is known for its chic accommodations and lively atmosphere, including posh restaurants and clubs. Meanwhile, San Jose Del Cabo enchants visitors with its authentic Mexican ambiance, boasting a historic town center adorned with colonial architecture and thriving art scene.

Wine and Dine
Teeming with marine life, the sea dictates the daily delicacies throughout Los Cabos. While restaurants in the area take advantage of the fresh seafood, don’t fear if fish isn’t your forte as the local restaurant scene has evolved into a multicultural, fine-dining experience.
During their first culinary tour of Mexico, the vaunted Michelin Guide Inspectors gave well-deserved recognition to many dining establishments throughout Los Cabos, with chef Sidney Schutte and his Cocina de Autor earning the region’s first Michelin Star. This world-class restaurant aims to invoke emotions, sensations, and memories through gastronomic innovations and continues to push the boundaries of contemporary cuisine. Nestled within the bougainvillea-adorned Grand Velas hotel halfway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Cocina de Autor offers a playful eightcourse or ten-course tasting menu that highlights the freshest local produce, meats, and seafood.
Located along the picturesque coast within the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal resort, Don Manuel’s—led by Chef Manuel Horta and his team— stands as a beacon of modern Mexican gastronomy. Here, ancient culinary techniques and Mexican heritage blend seamlessly with contemporary inspiration. The open-air patio offers breathtaking views of the crashing waves, making Don Manuel’s an ideal choice for any meal, whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
If your taste buds are yearning for authentic local flavors, the street food scene surrounding the charming town center of San Jose del Cabo can’t be beat! Let the gentle coastal breeze guide your senses as you’re enveloped in the rich aromas of regional Mexican cuisine.
Nearby, quietly tucked away in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, a one-of-a-kind culinary haven beckons food from around the globe. Flora’s Field Kitchen, the centerpiece of the breathtaking 25-acre, certified organic Flora Farms, epitomizes the art of artisanal cooking. Beyond its renowned kitchen, Flora Farms offers a host of attractions including the Farm Spa, the Farm Bar, Flora Farms Grocery, The Shoppes at Flora Farms, and Flora Farms Celebrations for special events. The seasonal, farm-to-table dishes are consistently tweaked to highlight the freshest produce and ingredients.

ADVENTURES at SEA
With the Sea of Cortez as its expansive playground, Los Cabos offers an abundance of activities and sightseeing opportunities. Proudly known as the Marlin Capital of the World, the healthy waters are an angler’s dream with world-class offshore and inshore fishing for many species of marlin, as well as yellowfin, sailfish, dorado, and red snapper.
If the fish aren’t biting, there’s no need to worry as the ocean offers numerous other forms of entertainment. Catamarans, with their spacious decks, cozy lounging areas, and breathtaking panoramic views, provide the perfect setting to explore the offshore islands and secluded beaches of Los Cabos. Set sail toward the rocks of El Arco and end your day with a margarita in hand, witnessing the sun set in a fiery blaze over Baja California’s southernmost point. Whether you’re sunbathing on deck or enjoying cocktails at sunset, a catamaran offers an ideal blend of elegance and relaxation.
Surfers from around the globe flock to the laid-back beach towns of Pescadeo and Todos Santos to chase some of the best waves in Mexico. Their artistic, yet sleepy vibes make them a popular destination for expats, and the enchanting town centers are always buzzing with activity. During the winter months, Todos Santos becomes a major thoroughfare for pods of humpback and grey whales making their way to warmer waters down south. While this phenomenon can be viewed from the beach, private catamarans can also be chartered to experience the magic up-close.
While the landscape of Cabo offers an endless supply of entertainment, a dip below the waves unveils a new world to explore. The Cabo Pulmo National Park boasts a plethora of outstanding dive sites, catering to both beginners and experts. With the only living coral reef in western North America, scuba divers and snorkelers alike are immersed in incredible marine life.
FIND your BEACH
While the Los Cabos region is blessed with miles of pristine shoreline, many beaches are unsuitable for swimming due to strong currents, rough seas, and challenging access. To reach the best and least-crowded beaches, a catamaran or water taxi is your best bet. Among the local favorites is Playa del Amor, a serene stretch of sand nestled between the outcrops of El Arco. With dramatic rock formations flanking the sandy shore, it’s the perfect spot to relax and watch sea lions bask in the Baja sun.
Farther up the coast, the golden sand and gentle waters of Playa Palmilla make this family-friendly beach a favorite for locals and tourists alike. With its close proximity to many of the area’s high-end resorts and golf courses, Playa Palmilla offers an upscale beach experience.
SWING away
Golf wasn’t introduced to Los Cabos until the 1980s and since then, the scene has exploded. With 18 courses in the area open for play—designed by the likes of Jack Nikalus, Tiger Woods, and Greg Norman to name a few—there’s no shortage of terrain to choose from.
Golfers experiencing the area for the first time are often overwhelmed by the sensory delights: the turquoise waters of the ocean, dramatic rock formations lining the coast, and white sand beaches alongside towering dunes. With saguaro cacti dominating the distant landscape toward the towering desert peaks, golfing in Los Cabos is a delight.
Many villas in Inspirato’s Los Cabos collection boast on-site golf amenities, including residences and resort accommodations at the renowned Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course and the iconic Palmilla Golf Club. Palmilla, the first Latin American course designed by Jack Nicklaus, offers a challenging 27hole layout with breathtaking ocean views from every hole. Coastal trade winds add a unique challenge to each round, while the beaches lining the course captivate both seasoned and novice golfers alike.

With sweeping views of the Sea of Cortez, the lavish villas in Punta Ballena include access to private beaches and the guest-only beach club featuring a restaurant, bar, fitness center, tennis facilities, pools, and a hot tub. Making Luxury Vacations Easier than Ever
In this exclusive interview with Inspirato, we talk with Jonathan Marsico, Founder and CEO of Ship Sticks and Ship&Play, about how his passion for golf led to his latest venture, and a new era of travel convenience.
BY ABBIE MOOD
For over a decade, Jonathan Marsico has been helping golfers and skiers enjoy a hassle-free vacation with a seamless, white-glove delivery of their clubs and winter gear. In the process, listening to customers and tracking demand led the Denver-based businessman to expand this offering with an eye on more ubiquitous types of luggage. Enter Ship&Play, a brand that was created to capture the spirit of a new way to travel for golfers, families, and everyone in between. We caught up with Jonathan to learn how Ship&Play plans to be there when travelers around the world decide that traveling light is the future of luxury.
INSPIRATO: Tell us a little bit about yourself as a golfer and how that led to founding Ship Sticks, your first company?
JONATHAN MARSICO: My co-founder and I are golfers and enjoy traveling around the country, socially and professionally. As we tried to balance the various aspects of our lives, we asked ourselves, “how could we create more efficiency around our golf trips?”
We realized traveling with golf clubs can be a real pain point—from waiting at the airport to renting a large SUV to fit all your golf buddies’ clubs. We wanted to figure out the most convenient and reliable way for golfers to just walk off the plane, leave the airport, and head to their destination.
We understand how crucial it is for golfers to have their clubs handled with the utmost care. Golf clubs are not just equipment; they’re essential to a golfer’s experience and enjoyment on a trip. That’s why we prioritize working with logistics partners who fully appreciate this significance. Our partners are dedicated to providing meticulous handling and reliable service to ensure that every item, from golf clubs to luggage, arrives on-time and in excellent condition.
INSPIRATO: How did your newest venture, Ship&Play, come to fruition?
JM: We started with Ship Sticks and shipping golf clubs. As more golfers used the service, they kept asking us, “Can I ship my luggage as well?” They wanted to avoid the experience of waiting for bags entirely. Once they got a feel for the service and could trust we could deliver as promised, they wanted to go through airports 100% baggage-free.
Listening to our customers led us to add luggage as a complementary service, and while the concept is simple, changing the way people have done something for centuries isn’t as easy. We had to communicate that we could deliver a highly reliable service and educate people on a new way to think about traveling.
Ship&Play is a natural expansion of sticks and skis, but we chose “play” for the name as we feel it can be a very versatile term. “Play” can be a vacation with your family, going to the beach with friends, or whatever your next adventure is. Ship&Play helps people experience their version of “play” quickly, reliably, and conveniently. It’s a universal, one-stop consumer shipping platform that can ship various items used to get the most out of traveling.
INSPIRATO: How does your golf game inspire your own travels? What has been your favorite trip?
JM: For me, the core of traveling for golf is relationships. That’s the unique thing about golf—aside from playing a sport and being outside—it’s a connection among friends. As busy as we are in our lives, the course is where we make time to spend with old and new social and professional friends.
Travel has evolved for me over the years. Ten years ago, I might have gone to a fancy resort, but
today— without sounding cliché—it’s more about the people than the place, and I will go anywhere with friends to escape for a day or two.
One of my most impactful trips was to Scotland five years ago with my dad, my two uncles, and our generation of cousins. We all grew up together in Denver; however, now that we are scattered around the country with families and jobs, the time we spent together in Scotland brought us together again. Aside from the phenomenal courses in Scotland, we were able to spend quality time with each other, which made it a special trip.
INSPIRATO: What other destinations or golf courses are on your bucket list?
JM: So many great destinations in America: Bandon Dunes is an extraordinary place, as well as Pebble Beach. I've never been to Pinehurst in North Carolina, which is so rich in history. Then there’s Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, which I haven't been to yet. Consider me a golf nerd. I love the history of golf, and specifically the history of golf architecture: the different generations, why things were built, and the timeless nature of the game.
INSPIRATO: Why did you join Inspirato?
JM: With Inspirato, it’s not just the amazing resorts and properties, but the concierge service accompanying it. The white-glove service that enables life's greatest experiences—from receiving your groceries in your residence before arrival to a curated day fishing on the ocean for your family and friends—that’s the main reason I decided to join.
INSPIRATO: Inspirato has partnered with Ship & Play, what do Inspirato members need to know about this new service?
JM: First, golf-loving and skiing members can continue to travel seamlessly and conveniently, with their clubs and skis delivered directly to their destination. But Ship&Play is not isolated to golf and skiing—now, all travelers can have their luggage shipped directly to their Inspirato accommodations, and Inspirato agents can even book it for them. Our white-glove service perfectly complements the Inspirato concierge service members are used to. Whether going to the beach, on a European cruise, or anything in between, Ship&Play will offer the same convenience and reliability to enhance your travel experience so you can focus on enjoying your vacation. I’m eager for Inspirato members to try our service if they haven’t already, so as part of the partnership, we’ve created special pricing for every member, and exclusive deals for all loyalty tiers.
