environment with safe friends and those around them. School violence has exploded over the last few years and the problemchildren have gotten younger and more violent. Bullying is a fact of life, weapons at school happen, not every day, but it does happen. Some kid likes Bobby’s backpack better and takes it. We as parents have the responsibility to ensure that our student goes out that door in the morning knowing how to be safe. We have to talk to our kids about what to do if they see a weapon at school or are the victim of bulling or witness it happening. We have to ask questions if we see mood changes in our kids. Have you talked to your student about drugs?

Teachers have a responsibility to teach students, not just be roll takers because they have to deal with so many classroom disruptions. On May30, 2018 in light of the Santa Fe, Texas shooting, Governor Gregg Abbott issued a forty four (44) page document entitled “School and Firearms Safety Action Plan” that encompasses a great deal of material dealing with issues from mental health in schools to school resource officers and grants that are available. Then there was Uvalde! How do we prevent or at least control school violence and identify those who are the potential problems. How do we protect our kids? How do we protect our teachers and train them better? That all goes back to talking to our kids and us as parents paying attention. A lot of the ISD’s have created their own school resource officer or police departments.

The Fannin Constable PCT 3 will be posting two different posters soon on the Constable PCT 3 Facebook page, “Help Keep Your School Safe” for students and “Help Your Kid Be Safe at School” for parents. These are by no means the “fix all” however if you and your student are aware, you will be safer.

Making a Difference at Fannin County Commissioners Court

Tuesday morning, December 27, 2022, ushered in what would be the last Commissioners Court of 2022 for Fannin County. Outgoing County Judge Randy Moore called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. and after noting Quorum was established, invited Pastor Mike Allred of the Boyd Baptist Church to lead an Invocation. Afterwards, Pledges were led by SSgt Rebecca Fi-

garo, USMC, retired.

4. Introductions: Commissioner Self welcomed and introduced his wife Samantha, his son Cooper and daughter Callie to today’s court.

5. Public Forum: First to speak in Public Forum was a resident of Telephone who began by speaking on many citizens’ interests in the happenings of Fannin County including road issues, disproportionate comparisons (comparing Fannin County to other

counties with much larger populations), misplaced concerns before concluding her narrative with an exhortation for citizens to communicate with their respective commissioner. Next to speak was Judge Moore’s Administrative Assistant Lisa Loiselle who spoke to thank all those who assisted with the recent retirement party given for Judge Moore before relaying her appreciation for the opportunity to have worked for Judge Moore. She expounded on his strengths of character, patience and the blessing he was to the county as well as to herself. Last to speak was Fannin County Judge Elect Newt Cunningham who spoke to commend Judge Moore for the quality of his public service; the way he would put the county first in issues affecting the county and his collegial handling of matters involving conflict before thanking him for all he has done for the County.

6. Discussion, consideration and action to approve minutes from 03/29/2022 (R) – County Judge for County Clerk: A motion was made by Commissioner Lane to approve the minutes with Commissioner Magness seconding

the motion which passed.

7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Treasurer’s Financial Report for November 2022 – County Judge for County Treasurer: Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson began by noting the receipts for November was $1,133,552.64 with the property taxes of that figure being $699,955.21 and sales taxes being $151,040.22. After his report Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the report with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed.

8. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Treasurer’s Investment Report for November 2022 –County Judge for County Treasurer: Mr. Woodson noted the interest received in November on the TexPool accounts was $14,256.50 on a balance of $4,686,463.37. The 2022 Bond (money for Justice Center) drew an interest of $7,861.17 on a balance of $11,068,647.22. The Operating Business Money fund had an interest of $37.08 on a balance of $128,920.20. After Mr. Woodson’s report Commissioner Self made the

motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed.

9. Discussion, consideration and action regarding compensation to Mayfield McCraw for the use of additional space located at 200 E. 1st Street in Bonham for the staining of the Courthouse shutters – Commissioner Precinct 2 for Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Shonda Magness explained that Commissioner Self made her aware of how Mr. McCraw allowed the county the use of his warehouse space during the months of June through September. Describing how at times there was a crew of approximately six men working on a regular basis during times of extreme heat, she noted that though the county did not receive a bill from Mr. McCraw for rent or utilities, it was her estimation that a payment of $4,083.80 would be a fair compensation to Mr. McCraw for this service to the county. After her summation, Commissioner Self and Commissioner Lackey commented on the fairness of her estimation. Commissioner Self then made a motion to pay Mr. McCraw the amount cited with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

this issue that included DA Glaser citing the legal code involved in these matters, the proper amount of notice needing to be given on this and Attorney Glaser handing out information to the court for their review. Commissioner Lackey commented on the outdated condition of the starting pay scale matrix currently in use by the county that caused Attorney Glaser to agree with the Commissioner that a review of that scale was needed before Commissioner Self made the motion to table this matter until the second week of January.

Commissioner Lane seconded the motion which passed.

After Atty Glaser’s summation, Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed.

11. Discussion, consideration and action regarding District Attorney employee salaries – Commissioner Precinct 2: Commissioner Self began a lengthy discussion on

12. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Unclaimed Property Capital Credits received in the amount of $36,703.25 –County Judge: Judge Moore called the Commissioners attention to a proposed breakdown disbursement of monies he had judged would be a good use for these funds. He noted how he had proposed $5,000.00 be used for a stained display case for the courthouse and $7,500.00 be set aside for GI (geographic information) mapping for a Fannin County Economic Development Board which would leave a balance of $24,000.00. A discussion then began on the handling of the disbursement that led Judge Moore to cite how a similar amount had been portioned out in 2021 to Fannin County Children’s Center, Fannin County’s Child Welfare Board, The Creative Arts Center, the three libraries (Bonham, Honey Grove and Leonard) and the four chambers of commerce (Bonham, Leonard, Honey Grove and Ladonia). Melinda Allison with the Honey Grove Library responded to a request by Commissioner Magness to explain how the funds given in 2021 were used and how the libraries are funded. After an in-depth discussion of the best use of the funds, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve Judge Moore’s proposed breakdown that included the same parties from last year’s disbursement, with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed. (A list with the amounts going to each party was noted to be attached to the County’s minutes.)

just put a puppy in a crate and shut the door. Well, you can, but it’s not much of a method and you may run into some problems. - I generally suggest the plastic type crate. If you get the foldable, metal type, cover it with a towel or a blanket to make it seem more “den like”.

It’s a good idea at first to leave the door open on his new crate for at least a few hours if not an entire day, allowing him to come and go as he pleases. Put any toys he likes in there, and feed him in there too. Put an item of your worn clothing in there as well. This familiarizes him with his new den, and gives him a positive impression of it. - Then, that first night, make sure to take him out to potty before bedtime. After that, put him in the crate, close the door and that’s that. It’s best if his bedtime coincides with yours, because ideally, his crate should be next to your bed at first. That way he can hear you and smell you... and you can hear him when he fusses when he needs to go to the bathroom. Next time, more on crate training

It is sad that so many think of the Word of God, the Bible, as a book of myths or fairy tales, or even made-up stories. As we take time to read our Bibles, we find great truth, wisdom, instruction, and comfort that can and will change the lives of men and women, and boys and girls across this world.

The main characters of the Bible are God and Jesus. We find that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction

in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Jesus confirms the fact that God’s “word is truth” (John 17:17).

We are also informed that it is “impossible for God to lie” and that this is “a strong consolation” for those “who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18). What are we to do with God’s word? We are to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). We are

to “received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

We are to let the word of God be our standard of living. We must hold the Bible in higher value than all the wisdom of men. Paul wrote that we are to “let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged” (Romans 3:4). If we fail to read, study and live the Bible, then we have failed at life!

New Year: New Life in Christ

The most basic work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life is the new birth.

All of the powers and wonders of the Christian life are centered on this essential miracle of Christianity. This miracle in the individual soul communicates new life in the individual.

A religious leader asked Jesus, “How can a man be born again?” (John 3:1-5) Jesus told him that he needed a spiritual birth. Yes, it was a miracle of the Holy Spirit of God giving life to the spiritually dead. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His

name” (John 1:12).

There are three ways a person cannot be born again. The apostle John says those “who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (v. 13).

It is “not of blood,” i.e., it is not a process of nature. It is not by descent from our parents, or after the human nature, or spiritual or religious evolution. I am not a Christian because my parents were Christians. My children are not Christians because I am a Christian. Your spiritual aristocracy means nothing to God. It is not “the will of the flesh.”

It is not by a sincere and passionate desire to be better as expressed in good religious works. You are not born again by your efforts or determination to live a good life, or imitate the virtues of Christ. You cannot enter into a new life in Christ by any natural power.

It is not accomplished by “the will of man.” No decision on your part brings spiritual regeneration. It is an act of God alone. It is not by my will that I am born again. It is not where there is a will there is a way. No individual can bestow spiritual life on another person.

The central truth of Christianity is that a person must be “born . . . of God.” God regenerates, not man. God is the Agent who brings spiritual life to the soul of the sinner. God the Holy Spirit communicates the new life through a spiritual birth. It is a mystery that cannot be explained. You cannot put it in a test tube, or a mathematical formula or a computer chip. It is a miracle that can only be experienced when God does it. This spiritual life

is a new quality, a radically different kind of life that is communicated to the soul.

The new birth is the communication to the soul of the believing sinner the very life of Christ. It comes directly from God. The believing sinner can now have fellowship with God. He is “a partaker of the divine nature.” It does not come from our heredity, our intellectual abilities, human efforts, etc. It comes directly and only from God.

This Christ-life is always a raising of the dead (Eph. 2:15). It is always life bestowed on spiritually dead sinners. The new birth, new creation, or spiritual regeneration is life out of death. God the Holy Spirit gives it, and it is as powerful as raising the dead.

To the individual soul born of God is communicated the very life of Christ. And when the Spirit of Christ comes into your life He cleanses, purges, renews, energizes and enables you to live a new kind of life in Christ.

Who is born again? Any individual who receives Jesus Christ is born again. The new birth is the reception of a person, Jesus Christ. Those individuals who believe on Him are born of God. The apostle John tells us, “as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” The very moment you realize you are a sinner, dead in your trespasses and sins, and receive or believe on Christ, God the Holy Spirit imparts to you a new birth. To believe on Christ is to receive Him into your life.

The dying thief on the cross near Jesus said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom.” Jesus, with majestic dignity, and divine authority said, “Today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

That can be your experience today. Do you know Jesus Christ? I did not ask do you know about Him, but do you know Him personally? Have you been born again? Have you received Jesus Christ into your life? Have you received the new life that Jesus Christ alone gives?

You are not a Christian if you have not received the new life that God gives to the sinner who calls upon His Name. This new life is for you, and God alone can give it to you. Will you believe on Him, even right now as you read this?

David Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, is remembered mostly for dying at the Alamo. However, he is remembered in northeast Texas for a visit he made to that area. He had served in the US Congress as a delegate of Tennessee from 1827 to 1831 and again from 1833 to 1835. After losing his bid for re-election Crockett said, “you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.” During his last term, on July 4, 1834, he was given a rifle, tomahawk and hunting knife by the Rifle Club of Philadelphia, of which he was a member. The rifle had been made by Henry Deringer. It was a large target rifle. Crockett carved into the stock of the rifle the Lone Star symbol of Texas and then had it inlaid with Silver. He headed for Texas and visited Little Rock, Arkansas on November 12, 1835, along with 6 or 8 mounted and well-armed Tennesseans. Among this group was Crockett’s nephew, William Patton, his brother-in-law Abner Burgin and Lindsey K. Tinkle, a family friend.

Before reaching Little Rock, he killed a deer about five miles out of town. While dressing the deer, word got out as to who he was and then townspeople got up a banquet for him that night. He gave a speech and fun was had by all.

David Crockett left LIttle Rock and headed to Texas. He was to meet Benjamin McCulloch (Tennessee friends at Nacogdoches, Texas on Christmas day 1835. Crockett and party crossed the Red River at Lost Prairie, Arkansas and continued west, passing the south bound road to Nacogdoches. In all probability he came down the Choctaw Trail or Ridge Road. But why did Crockett pass up the south bound road? Had he heard the news passed around by Martin D. Hart and other hunters and frontiersmen in Little Rock? So what could Crockett have heard that caused him to pass the Nacogdoches Road and continue west?

On the fourth of February 1834, one year before Crockett arrived in Little Rock, Martin D. Hart and party went up Red River on a hunting and exploring expedition. They ascended the mouth of the Choctaw Bayou and went upstream several miles. When they left

to return, they had been there over two months. While there they killed 11 bears, 35 buffalo, 30 deer and found 54 bee trees. By January 1, 1835 they were in Little Rock, Arkansas where they stayed for a couple months. This put the information about the hunting and exploration trip in Little Rock. Judge J.P. Simpson wrote in 1836 he and a friend traveled over 14 counties in Arkansas looking to invest in land for speculation. Arkansas, at that time, included present day Oklahoma. They ran into frontiersmen and hunters who told them of hunting and camping some twenty years before on the south side of the Red River, up a stream at a beautiful grove that was a resort for the outdoorsmen. There were herds of buffalo, antelope, elk and deer plus a tremendous amount of honey in the grove and down the creek that flowed out of it.

They had named the resort Honey Grove and had named the creek Bee. Consequently, Honey Grove had its name twenty something years before Crockett came there. Simpson went back to Tennessee through LIttle Rock, Arkansas. He may have spread the word again. Later when moving to that area, Judge Simpson found the grove with immense heaps of buffalo, antelope and elk horns. There was also an immigrant living in a tent who had unloaded and was making plans for building a house so that he could file on the site for his headright. Simpson continued traveling until he reached the west bank of Bois d’Arc Creek. When Crockett and party came through, they continued to Bois d’Arc Creek and Choctaw Bayou.

One night while in camp at Blairs Springs, David Crockett and Andrew Thomas, who came to this area together, worked up a rifle trade. Crockett’s rifle was five feet long and weighed fourteen pounds. Andrews own weapon was much lighter, shorter and easier to handle on horseback.

In September of 2007, a copy of a letter was rediscovered that was written from David Crockett to his children. It was dated “St. Augustine, Texas January 9, 1836”. The letter goes on to say ”I expect in all probability to settle on the Bois d’Arc or Choctaw Bayou of Red River that I have no

doubt is the richest country in the world. Good land and

plenty of timber and the best springs and good mill streams, good range, clear water and every appearance of good health and game plenty. It is in the pass where buffalo passes from north to south and back twice a year and bees and honey plenty. I have a great hope of getting the agency to settle that country and I would be glad to see every friend I have settle there. It would be a fortune to them all. I have taken the oath to the government and have enrolled my name as a volunteer for six months. I will set out for the Rio Grande in a few days with the Volun-

teers from the United States. All are entitled to vote for a member of the convention or to be voted for and I have but little doubt of being elected a member to form a constitution for this Province. Crockett never made it back but his rifle stayed with Andrew Thomas. In 1837 Thomas brought his family back and settled south of Kentucky Town. The rifle was handed down within the family until it landed in the hands of James P. Darwin, a Whitewright, Texas postal worker. In 1957, Mr. Darwin and his family gave the gun to the Daughters of the Republic

of Texas for display at the Alamo. Through the years many people have tried to buy the weapon but the family steadfastly refused to sell because it had saved the lives of family members from raiding Indians. The gun was used in the Texas Revolution of 1836 and was carried to California in the gold rush of 1849 and taken to the War Between the States by W.A. Thomas of the 9th Texas Cavalry. Thomas was issued a rifle so he sent this one back home. W. A. Thomas was in Company C, with Robert J. “Bob” Lee of the Lee/Peacock Feud fame.

Sam Rayburn’s Birthday Party Returns to the Sam Rayburn House

Sam Rayburn’s birthday is right around the corner, and we want you to celebrate with us! Born January 6, 1882, in Roane County, Tennessee, Sam Rayburn was just 5 years old when he moved to Fannin County with his family. The Rayburn clan settled in Flag Springs, but later moved to Bonham, a place that was dear to Mr. Sam’s heart throughout his life. Bonham was where he first saw Congressman Joseph Weldon Bailey speak, which led to his life’s ambition: to enter politics and eventually become Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. And Bonham was where he and his brother Tom would build a home and farm for the Rayburn family.

The Sam Rayburn House invites you to join us at the Rayburn family farm on Saturday, January 7th to celebrate

141 years of Mr. Sam’s influence on Bonham, Texas, and the nation! Celebrate all things Sam Rayburn with first floor tours, birthday games and crafts, and, of course, birthday cake! Admission to Mr. Sam’s Birthday Party is free, and the festivities will run from 10 am to 3 pm!

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site is located at 890 W. State Hwy 56 in Bonham. The site tells the real story of Sam Rayburn, one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century, in his authentic 1916 home. Preserved as a period time capsule, the two-story house contains all original Rayburn furnishings and housewares. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site is one of 34 historic attractions operated by the Texas Historical Commission. For more information, visit: www.VisitSamRayburnHouse. com, e-mail sam-rayburn-house@ thc.texas.gov, or call 903.583.5558.

A month ago, she had the honor of playing the piano at her mother’s 100th birthday when everyone sang Happy Birthday.

As successful as she was in her career, everyone who knew Pam remembers her roles as wife, mother, grandmother. She successfully balanced a career and raising her two daughters, Amy and Amber. After living in Irving and Carrollton, in 1992 she moved to Trenton, Texas, where their home is today.

Savoy’s Starting Slate Successfully: Lady Cards contending early in 23-1A for first hoops playoffs trip since 2014

Rayburn Rebels Rolling Right: SR downs defending district champ, has double-digit wins at Christmas

SAVOY -- Having two district wins already, Savoy’s Lady Cardinals will resume 23-1A play in 2023 in early contention for their first girls’ basketball postseason trip -- in nine years.

Wins in December over Fannindel, 34-33, and Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy

of Greenville, 35-23, gave Savoy a 2-1 record in 23-1A -- almost 3-0, if not for a narrow 29-25 loss to Miller Grove.

The Lady Cardinals last reached the girls’ basketball playoffs in 2014 -- the last of sixstraight trips to the postseason -- with a second-consecutive bidistrict finalist effort. Savoy also this sea-

son is vying for its first district title since 2012, when the Lady Cardinals -- for the secondstraight season -- won a championship and reached the regional semifinals.

District play resumes for Savoy with games against the current 23-1A co-leaders -- at Dodd City and versus Campbell on Jan. 3 and 6, respectively.

IVANHOE -- Duncan Hudson said he had “high goals” when he took on the role of being head boys’ basketball coach at Class 2A Sam Rayburn.

He didn’t just want the Rebels to consistently make the playoffs -- he wanted them to have regular extended runs in the postseason.

Several weeks still separate Sam Rayburn from a potential return to the boys’ playoffs -the first trip since its 2018 re-

gional quarterfinalist advance. But the Rebels’ results thus far during the 2022-23 season suggest that might be in their future.

A 36-26 win over Celeste -- the defending district champion and Region II-2A finalist -- to start 14-2A play on Dec. 21 gave Sam Rayburn an 11-4 overall record.

The Rebels resume 14-2A play on Jan. 3 by hosting Tom Bean, following play in the annual Ector Holiday Tournament

close out 2022.

Ranked 11-4A rivals await Bonham soccer in 2023

The Class 4A State champion Lady Bobcats topped the girls’ poll which also included district rivals Anna at No. 3 and Frisco Panther Creek, a new district opponent, at No. 9.

The rest of the Region II-4A pre-season girls’ poll included: No. 2 Palestine, No. 4 Henderson, No. 5 Bullard, No. 6T Paris/Caddo Mills, No. 7 Jacksonville, No. 8 Texarkana Pleasant Grove and No. 10 Sulphur Springs.

Meanwhile, the 4A State fi-

nalist Bobcats topped the Region II-4A boys’ poll.

The remainder of the boys’ rankings included: No. 2 Palestine, No. 3 Jacksonville, No. 4 Paris, No. 5 Sulphur Springs, No. 6 Tyler Chapel Hill, No. 7 Nevada Community, No. 8 North Dallas, No. 9T. Center/ Henderson and No. 10 Athens.

District 11-4A play for both Bonham teams will begin Saturday, Feb. 4, at Anna at 10 a.m. (girls) and 11:30 a.m. (boys).

OBITUARIES

There’s something to be said for the brightness of day, of course, when the energies of the world improve our lot in life. But for a special time, give me the night. Give me the soft, velvety quiet of a country evening and its own sounds and flavors and scents.

It’s good to hear the night shift take over the part of our world we call home.

The coyote yaps off in the brush, calling his family to the hunt, the quail have a soft cluck and rustle down by the creek. The crickets set up the background music for all this in a spooky kind of harmony.

It’s a resting time for most, but for those who will postpone sleep, there is the secret of another world, where we slow down a little and take a bit more time

with our lives. This is a time when we can hear the world heal a little before it goes back into daily battle again.

A time when we can smile and sit and just say thanks for bringing us to another evening like this. If we like, we can do a little mental planning for the next day. Or not.

A country evening is what we get for being good all day.

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.
