A Christian Prayer For The New Year Our Father and our God, as we stand at the beginning of this new year we confess our need of Your presence and Your guidance as we face the future. We each have our hopes and expectations for the year that is ahead of us-but You alone know what it holds for us, and only You can give us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet its challenges. So help us to humbly put our hands into Your hand, and to trust You and to seek Your will for our lives during this coming year. In the midst of life’s uncertainties in the days ahead, assure us of the certainty of Your unchanging love.

And the gratitude of being heard

In the midst of life’s temptations and the pull of our stubborn self-will, help us not to lose our way but to have the courage to do what is right in Your sight, regardless of the cost.

It works both ways. You experience such joy in hearing what others are saying to you. Consider how pleased family and friends are to know you hear (and understand) their words, meant for you. That, too, is a gift. With a groundbreaking design, exceptional focus, ultimate convenience, and unparalleled aesthetics, the WIDEX SmartRIC™ will help you enjoy an active life, feeling more connected and focusing on sounds you want to hear. “I don’t feel like I am wearing hearing aids! They are perfect and invisible.” Carolyn Macaluso, Las Vegas, Nevada “After wearing the new hearing aids for a month, I fell in love with their ability to manage speech in noise, and their quick connection to Apple® and Android™ devices.” Steve Douglas, Fort Wayne, Indiana “Our patients are saying they have never heard a hearing aid that was so clear! They can finally understand conversation – in both quiet and noisy environments. What’s really exciting is that we’ve put it on patients who have the most difficulty hearing and sometimes they have been so emotional because they say it’s like hearing their life the way it used to be.” Jill Sheppard, B.S., SLP/Audiology, Licensed Fitter & Dispenser of Hearing Instruments, co-owner Sheppard, B.S., SLP/Audiology, of HearCare & Associates in Sherman and Gainesville JillKenneth Sheppard, Jr., LFDHI

It’s worth your time. It’s about your life.

Hearcare, Inc. & Associates, TX-October Fannin County Front Page.indd 1

And in the midst of our daily preoccupations and pursuits, open our eyes to the sorrows and injustices of our hurting world, and help us to respond with compassion and sacrifice to those who are friendless and in need. May our constant prayer be that of the ancient Psalmist: “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end” (Psalm 119:33). We pray for our nation and its leaders during these difficult times, and for all those who are seeking to bring peace and justice to our dangerous and troubled world. We pray especially for Your protection on all those who serve in our armed forces, and we thank You for their commitment to defend our freedoms, even at the cost of their own lives. Be with their families also, and assure them of Your love and concern for them. Bring our divided nation together, and give us a greater vision of what You would have us to be. Your Word reminds us that “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). As we look back over this past year we thank You for Your goodness to us-far beyond what we have deserved. May we never presume on Your past goodness or forget all Your mercies to us, but may they instead lead us to repentance, and to a new commitment to make You the foundation and center of our lives this year. And so, our Father, we thank You for the promise and hope of this new year, and we look forward to it with expectancy and faith. This I ask in the name of our Lord and Savior, who by His death and resurrection has given us hope both for this world and the world to come.

Crockett Park

Marker Text: Named for David Crockett (1786-1836), the colorful Tennessee pioneer and congressman who rallied to cause of Texas in her war for Independence. Late in 1835, Crockett traveled by riverboat, horseback, and on foot, entering Texas along the Red River (NE of here). Camping at a site half a mile northeast of this park, he found wild bees and honey in hollow trees. In letters to family and friends, Crockett called the campsite a “Honey Grove.” It is said he told his friends he would settle here later, but in a few weeks he died in cause of freedom at the Alamo. One of Crockett’s old friends, Tennessee surveyor Samuel A. Erwin (1786-1854), became the first settler here (1839) and first postmaster (1846). Bejamin S. Walcott, arriving in 1848, added land of his own to his wife’s legacy from James Gilmer. With Erwin as co-founder, he platted town of Honey Grove on the Gilmer grant. He also erected first stone building. In 1885, Honey Grove had many businesses, including a weekly newspaper, “The Independent.” Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad reached here in 1887. A peak of 4,000 inhabitants was attained in 1890. Situated on land bought from W. J. Erwin (1919), this park provides recreation for a dynamic community. Location: West Main Street, Honey Grove

4 Way Stops Made Easy

Who Has the Right of Way at a Four Way Stop? Possibly the most important rule to remember is that whoever gets to the stop sign first, gets to go first. But what if two cars get to the stop sign at the same time? In this case,

one is turning left, the rightturning car has the right of way. Who Has the Right of Way at a Left Turn? Left turns are arguably the riskiest moves drivers can make, especially if left turns aren’t dictated by a traffic light. In fact, left-turning drivers cause approximately 53% of intersection accidents. Meanwhile, only 5.7% of intersection crashes involve right-turning drivers according to the National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If both cars at an intersection are turning left, they can turn at the same time if there’s enough room on the road to do so. If not, visual communication with the other driver will establish who goes first. This rule also applies to four cars who are at a four way stop at the same time. They all must visually communicate to decide who goes first.

the driver on the right has the right of way. However, the rule for who has the right of way at a four way stop when two cars are across from each other depends on the direction of travel. Both drivers can go if they are driving straight or turning right. If one car is signaling a turn and the other isn’t, the car going straight has the right of way. This same rule applies at two-way stops as well. If one car is turning right and

Texas Is Now Home To 31 Million People Even As Population Growth Slows of Florida and California. That growth brought the state’s total population to 31,290,831. The state didn’t add residents as quickly as it did the previous year, but the rate of its population growth — 1.8% — was still the third-highest in the country behind Florida

organization that informs Texans — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues. DALLAS — Texas’ population surpassed 31 million people within the last year as the state added more residents than any other place in the country, estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show. However, the number of people who moved from other parts of the country slowed. Texas added 562,941 residents between July 2023 and July 2024, census estimates show — ahead

and the District of Columbia. A major driver of that growth came from net international migration. Texas added 319,569 new residents from abroad, the most since the COVID-19 pandemic — but behind Florida and California, which saw the largest increases. The census changed the way it counts refugees and migrants this year. However, it does not distinguish legal status in its estimates. That growth mirrors gains seen across the nation. The United States added 3.3 million residents within the last year — 2.8

million of which came from other countries. Meanwhile, Texas saw fewer residents move from other states than it did during the COVID-19 pandemic — when the state attracted residents from places like California and New York in search of more affordable homes among other factors. Texas still led the country in domestic migration, followed by North Carolina and South Carolina, adding 85,267 people from other states within the last year. California, New York and Illinois saw the largest population losses in the last year, but those states lost fewer residents than they did in previous years. Why domestic migration to Texas slowed isn’t clear, said Lloyd Potter, the state d e m o g r a p h e r, but it’s possible that many of the people most likely to move to Texas from other states have simply already done so. With domestic migration appearing to slow, Texas will likely rely on international migration to meet its labor needs as the state’s economy booms, he said. “With a growing economy, we have a growing demand for labor,” Potter said. “And if we’re seeing a decline in domestic migration, well that labor probably is going to need to come from immigrants.”

New Texas Laws Taking Effect In 2025 peace officers, law enforcement interactions with the public, venues, municipal courts, and the expunction of criminal records. July 2025 Changes to issuing vehicle tags, permits, and license plates HB 718 amends the Tax Code and Transportation Code to eliminate the issuance of temporary paper license plates and permits by a dealer for vehicles sold in Texas. The provisions of the bill change the type of temporary plates issued by a dealer to a metal license plate, require

a dealer to obtain the plates from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), and establish that the plates are valid for the operation of the vehicle while the registration application submitted by the dealer is pending. The bill also revises the requirement for TxDMV to operate an applicable database to reflect the transition to metal license plates, which must allow law enforcement to obtain information about drivers to whom the license plates are issued.

January 2025 Vehicle safety inspection reports are no longer required HB 3297 eliminated the requirements in Texas for annual inspections during the vehicle registration process for non-commercial drivers. However, the requirement will be replaced by a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, which is the same cost as the inspection fee before the law was passed. The Property Tax Relief Act SB 2 made amendments to the education, government and tax codes to provide for a reduction in a public school district’s maximum compressed tax rate for the 2023-2024 school year. The portions that go into effect in January 2025 (sections 3.05, 3.08 and 3.15(b)) address additional state aid for adjusting the limit on tax increases for homesteads of elderly or people with disabilities, allowing for appraisers and assessors to make related tax calculations, and repealing some sections of the Tax Code. The Texas Data Privacy & Security Act HB 4, also known as the Texas Data Privacy & Security Act, added Chapter 541 to the Texas Business and Commerce Code. What is a Food Web? Every living plant and animal must have energy to survive. Plants rely on the soil, water, and the sun for energy. Animals rely on plants as well as other animals for energy. In an ecosystem, plants and animals all rely on each other to live. Scientists sometimes describe this dependence using a food

chain or a food web. A food chain describes how different organisms eat each other, starting out with a plant and ending with an animal. For example, you could write the food chain for a lion like this: grass ---> zebra ---> lion. The lion eats the zebra, which eats the grass. The grasshopper eats grass, the frog eats the grasshopper, the snake eats the frog, and the eagle eats the snake. Let’s learn about food chains and how they turn into food webs with a short lesson, some fun games and activities, as well as a fun craft! Come join us on January 18 for a free class for youth ages 5-10. Looking unto Jesus - Never Give In!

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War 2. As the war raged on against the Nazi regime, perhaps the most famous speech he ever delivered was an address he gave at Harrow School on Oct. 29, 1941. The speech was only 2 minutes long, but its impact was astounding. The message was simply

this: “Never give in, never the end. How can we keep give in, never, never, never— going? The answer is found in nothing, great or 12-18-18 small, in three words of Jesus: large or petty…” “Looking unto Jesus…” As we approach the (Hebrews 12:2) May we all beginning of a new year, we commit to keep our focus also need to “never give in.” on Him in 2025! Hello everyone! This week’s message comes from Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” These words were spoken to people that were experiencing hardships and suffering, and likely hoping for an immediate way out. However, the Lord’s response is not to provide an easy way out, but rather He promises that He has a plan to help them get through these hard times. This same promise holds true for us today. There is no doubt that we will face uncertain circumstances in the coming year, but we, as

believers, can take comfort in knowing that God has a plan for our lives, no matter what circumstances we will face. He can work through them to better us, and give us hope for the future. We can also take comfort in the promise that He will never leave us, nor forsake us. He promises that He will be there for us in these uncertain times. In 1923, Thomas O. Chisholm wrote a classic hymn that comes from not only the message in this passage, but also from Lamentations 3:22-23. “Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father; There is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not, thy

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday

Oklahoma Dealing With Shortage Of Game Wardens

By Garrett Stringfellow KXII News

Okla. (KXII) - Midway through several big hunting seasons, Oklahoma is struggling with a shortage of game wardens. Oklahoma Senator David Bullard (R-Durant) said that game wardens have an important job to do. “Those game wardens are there to protect us and protect the wildlife that are on our property from being poached,” he said. “The number one deer stand in

presence is not there, people are going to take advantage of it,” he said. Bullard said one of the reasons the state is having a hard time filling those positions is because they’re simply not paying enough. “If you’re paying competitive wages, and we’re not right now in the wildlife department, then you’re going to have a hard time recruiting,” he said. Part of the problem is that the wildlife department is funded solely through ticketing, licenses and fees.

Oklahoma for a lot of years was the right or left seat of a pickup truck.” While there’s still some of that going on, he said it’s not anywhere near how it used to be. “That’s due in large part to the wildlife department doing their job, being out and about,” Bullard said. Now, that security could be in jeopardy. Oklahoma currently has 12 open positions for game wardens - the most vacancies in a long time. “When that law enforcement

“They haven’t had an increase in licensing or fees in 23 years,” Bullard said. Bullard said the ship has sailed on any more fee increases for the time being, but they could revisit the compacts they have with local tribes. “The tribe has been great partners with us, especially on licensing and fees,” he said. “Bring that back up to help - that would be enough money there to give a substantial raise to all of our wildlife agencies and and to our game wardens.”

Central Temperatures cooled off and the district experienced the first frost of the season. A few areas received scattered showers, but most of the district needed significant runoff for ponds and surface impoundments. Pastures were going dormant, and the cool-season grasses were in good shape. The pecan harvest looked good, but there were reports of dead trees. The second-crop corn silage harvest was nearing completion. Oats, wheat and other winter grasses needed rain to support growth. Ryegrass was trying to emerge. Some supplementation and hay feeding continued and expected to become more necessary in the coming weeks. Cattle, sheep and goat markets performed well amid strong demand. East The region received some much-needed rainfall. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate. Winter forages started to grow. Grasses were greening up, providing adequate grazing in some areas. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair. More moisture will be needed to continue the current progress. Cattle markets were strong. Livestock were doing fair to good with some supplementation taking place. Wild pigs were moving and causing an increasing amount of damage. North Topsoil and subsoil were short to adequate for the counties. Several counties reported scattered showers, and a few reported up to half an inch of rain, while most counties reported cooler temperatures with lows in the mid- to high-40s. Some areas reported a light frost.Pasture and range conditions were fair to poor for most of the counties. Feral hog activities increased. Pond levels improved. Summer grass growth had slowed due to lower temperatures, but pastures looked good. Livestock were in good to excellent condition. Rolling Plains Conditions remained favorable for agricultural operations. Additional rains boosted soil moisture going into the winter. Wheat benefited greatly from the recent moisture. All counties reported healthy wheat stands and growth with no signs of rust or nitrogen issues. Livestock were benefiting from the rain as well. Drinking water sources were replenished, and the wheat pastures should be good for

Bois d’Arc SLOW. water stained; 60 degrees; 3.86 feet below pool. Bass are slow in the early mornings, but the midday bite has been the best with Texas rigs and Viper XP Jigs on big timber around fence rows and creeks and ditches are best in 4-8 feet. Carolina rigs are good on pond dams and brush piles in 4-12 feet. Squarebill crankbaits are good around old ponds in 3-6 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. The lake level is low. Crappie fishing is excellent in the main river channel timber and lower third of the lake in 30-50 feet of water catching crappie 6-28 feet down. Fish are very healthy with big black crappie being caught on jigs. Some catches near the bridge. Report by River Bottom Boys Guide Service. Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 55 degrees: 2.00 feet below pool. The lake is low, best to launch near the dam. Crappie are good roaming in the river channel transitioning to the dam for the river pattern. Crappie are hitting minnows, jigs, or hand tied jigs. Report by River Bottom Boys Guide Service. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 2.34 feet below pool. Bass are good on Viper XP jigs and Texas rigs around big wood near any depth changes like creeks and ditches in 5-7 feet. Squarebill crankbaits and chatterbaits are good around docks in 3-6 feet. Carolina rigs are good on long points 8-15 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Lavon EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 3.27 feet below pool. Crappie are in 20-30 feet of water on brush piles and deep submerged timber. There are a few fish in 15-18 feet on structures, but most of them are a little bit deeper. A lot of them are hugging the bottom so you have to let your 1/8 ounce hand tied jig, minnows, or soft plastics touch the bottom and then slowly lift to entice a bite. Crappie need a bigger profile bait to zone in on. You can also find Fish spider rigging, or dragging a jig through the depth of the baitfish. Sometimes the fish will be laying on the bottom next to the dam usually no more than 100 yards off the rocks, other times fish lay at the base of the riprap where it turns into silt and they will be on the first tier of the rip rap going underwater, up to the rocks, to the dam. White bass are in 15-30 feet primarily on deepwater humps and levees, but some will be on points. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 65 degrees; 1.36 feet below pool. White bass on live bait and slabs.25-45 feet on deep water humps. Crappie are in 15-25 feet on brush piles and small patches of structure, minnows or jigs. Recommend using a half ounce sinker on top of your jig. Blue catfish can be caught drifting or anchored on flats in 20-45 feet with cut bait. Report by Justin Wilson, Wilson Outdoor Connection. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 63 degrees; 2.85 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni has shifted from a fall bite to more of a winter pattern as cold front after cold front continues to cool the water temperatures. The hybrid striper bite has been very up and down the last week. Lots of big wind has made it difficult to fish areas that are holding fish. Swimbaits and slab spoons are working best. Seems like the 10-25 feet range are holding fish. The eating sized catfish bite in the 1-4 pound range are still excellent. Baited holes are working best in 15-25 feet with punch bait. The trophy catfishing continues to improve weekly. Fish are being caught on cut bait in 2-15 feet. The largemouth bite has been good on plastics in 1-6 feet. Slow rolling shallow cranks are still putting fish in the boat but downsizing is working best. Report by Captain Michael Littlejohn, Lake Tawakoni Guide Service. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 55 degrees; 0.73 feet above pool. Striper fishing is a little tougher with the full moon and warming conditions. Watch for gulls on cloudy days working the river channels and ledges. Fish are roaming deeper water in big schools, biting swimbaits and live shad. Bigger fish will move up on structure with the next cold front, settling in 8–12 feet of water on humps and ledges. Look for crappie on bridge pilings and structure in 15–20 feet of water with jigs and minnows. Bass can be caught with soft plastics on structure and brush in 8–15 feet of water. Bass will push up into coves and around docks, feeding on shad. Swim jigs and crankbaits will work off ledges and on humps. Catfishing is good. Drift cut gizzard shad and rough fish on deeper flats in 30–40 feet of water near river mouths in muddier water. Bigger fish will move up shallower as the water cools. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service.
