February is Pet Dental Health Month
Brea
Smith, DVM Leonard Animal Clinic
Imagine what your teeth would look like if you never brushed them. If you’ve had a broken tooth, think about how painful that was. Our pets will continue to eat and drink despite the fact that 70-80% of pets over the age of 3 years have some dental disease. Some breeds of cats and dogs (especially small breeds) are more susceptible to having periodontal disease as well. Broken teeth are most common in powerful chewers. Dogs that chew rocks or hard bones have the potential to break one of their main chewing teeth at the back of the mouth. In some cases, a veterinary dentist can do a root canal to save a fractured tooth. However, there are times when the tooth can be so badly damaged that it needs to be extracted or it will cause the root to become infected which can spread to other areas of the body.
Feline resorptive lesions
are very painful and can cause behavioral changes. These are cavity like lesions that occur at the gum line because the tooth is being absorbed from the inside out. There are often problems under the gumline, requiring dental radiographs to diagnose and determine the best type of care possible for each tooth. Tooth brushing, with a pet safe toothpaste, at least every other day is the absolute best prevention for dental disease. It is important to look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of approval to assure efficacy of dental health products. Also, be sure to check the calorie content of dental hygiene treats in order to not negatively affect your pet’s health in another way. Once dental disease develops standard of care requires dental radiographs, scaling of the teeth, and polishing done under anesthesia. Anyone who tries to offer non-sedation dentistry is doing your pet a dis-service.

with a fork. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the pork to a large baking dish or rimmed sheet pan, discarding any large pieces of fat. Use two forks to shred the pork into 1 inch pieces. Generously brush the meat with reserved liquid. Turn on the broiler. Broil the shredded meat until the edges are crispy and caramelized, 5-8 minutes. Remove the baking dish from the oven and using a spatula, flip the meat over. Broil for 5 more minutes, or until crispy on top. Use the carnitas as desired! I hope you will try this one.

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?
Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself:
• Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others?
• Is there something I wish I could live without?
• Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control?
• Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

In a world where external chaos often reigns, the inner peace that Jesus offers is a priceless gift. Philippians 4:7 speaks of “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,” a peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This peace is not contingent on external circumstances but is rooted in the unchanging nature of Jesus Himself. Through a personal
relationship with Jesus, you can experience this peace firsthand. Prayer, meditation, and studying the Scriptures all serve to deepen this connection, providing a refuge from the storms of life. In the unavoidable moments of doubt or fear that are sure to come, turning to Jesus and His Word can bring a sense of calm and assurance only He can provide. In this age of constant change and uncertainty, the need for a solid foundation is

more pressing than ever. Jesus Christ, with His unchanging nature and timeless Word, offers a rock upon which we can build our lives with confidence and assurance. Would you “turn your eyes on Jesus today?” Would you place your life firmly upon the Rock that is Jesus Christ. Truly, all other ground is sinking sand.

“The Best Example of Love”
Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from John 3:16-17, and John 13:34-35. We start with the most recognizable, and well-known verse in the Bible. This verse is an explanation of the gospel in one sentence. However, the following verses are just as crucial to the presentation of the gospel. We see in verse 17 of chapter 3 that God didn’t send His Son to judge the earth, but to bring us salvation that can only come through faith in Him. This is the greatest demonstration of God’s incredible love, and an example of love that can never be duplicated. John 13:34-35 tells us, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;
as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Here, Jesus is sets His own love as the standard that we, as believers, should aspire to maintain, and why it is necessary that we act in Christian love. Love, especially between fellow believers, is no doubt the most powerful sign of a Christian’s faith.
In 1917, Frederick M. Lehman wrote this classic hymn that tells of the power of God’s love.
“The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell.

The Foundation Of The Church
By Mike Dickison, Minister for the Ivanhoe Church
of Christ
Where Is My Time? hunting/fishing sports social life sleep TV work Looks like you have it!
The foundation of the church is the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. When Jesus asked the twelve, “Will ye also go away?”, Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:68-69). When Jesus asked, “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus promised to build His church “That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). What is the foundation of the church? Peter understood that it was not himself. After healing a man, Peter pointed out “that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole” (Acts 4:10). Peter goes on to further emphasize Jesus by stating that “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among
men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Peter refused to be worshipped by Cornelius, saying, “Stand up; I myself also am a man” (Acts 10:25-26).
Are You A Christian?
Do you serve God?
Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Peter wrote, “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:11). Paul state that “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Luke recorded that “the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” (Acts 2:47).
Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The Church is a hospital for sinners. include and make time for GOD this Sunday
If Jesus is the foundation of the church, and if no other man can take His place, and if there is no salvation in any other than Jesus, and if the Lord adds to the church, those that are being saved, then how do we get salvation from the Jesus Christ? Jesus said “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16). Peter wrote, “even baptism doth also now save us” (1 Peter 3:21). Paul wrote, “For as many of you
as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27). If salvation is outside of the church, then salvation is outside of Christ. But, Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. “Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body” (Ephesians 5:23).

should never die.
If I remember my Bible it says we should all love one another forever and that love should never die no matter the color of our skin.
die.
I met the love of my life when I was thirty years old. Our great love for each other lasted for fiftyone years until God took her home. That love for her will never die.
As parents, our first love should be for our savior, our second love should be for our children. God gave them to us to love and to cherish forever.
We all love our mothers and fathers and our brothers and sisters. That love
The greatest love story that I ever read was in the Bible. That is when God gave us his only Son so that we could have an everlasting life. That is great love that will never die.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you have found that great love you should always tell that person that they are the love of your life. Do not wait until tomorrow for tomorrow may never come.
Remember, love is forever.

electrician, has also had the assistance of FC resident Robert Fleckenstein in identifying and correcting construction issues. At the conclusion of his comments, Judge Cunningham commended him and Mr. Fleckenstein in possibly preventing the recurrence of a fire like the one that destroyed the courthouse in 1929 and expounded on the need for competent construction work.
22. Justice Center - County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on reasons he is not in favor of change orders and stated why he is in favor of the less expensive asphalt parking lot as opposed to a more expensive concrete one.
23. County budget and revenue sources –County Judge: No significant updates.
24. Water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Commissioner Kopf touched on an upcoming meeting with the Greater Texoma Utility Authority and noted things are moving forward with the FC Water Supply Agency. Ravenna resident Jason Walker spoke to voice his displeasure with the way the county is handling what he alleged is a FEMA violation occurring neighbor’s property with an improperly built bridge over a creek on their property and threatened his notifying FEMA of the county’s insufficient attention to the matter if no more than sending out letters, is done by the court. Judge Cunningham responded by noting letters have been sent, lawsuits and enforcements have been looked at, the sexually oriented business (which is the property in question) has stopped advertising and noted the landowners will eventually have to tear down the non-permitted bridge. He further noted if Mr. Walker wants to notify FEMA and turn off the insurance protection in Fannin County, that is his right. More discussion ensued about the workload of the court’s civil attorney, the priorities placed on county issues and the laws being broken in Fannin County before Judge Cunningham noted he would visit with Attorney Garner on the matter brought by Mr. Walker.
25. Fannin County road issues - County Judge: Judge Cunningham touched on the issues and hazards created by overweight truck traffic on Fannin County’s roads, discussed what is currently being done and noted there is a meeting that will be held Friday, the 7th at the courthouse to discuss what further options are available regarding the issues posed by these trucks.
26. Solar and wind farms – County Judge: Passed on.
27. Emergency Medical Services - County Judge: Passed on.
30. No Executive Session needed.
32. Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 10:34 a.m.

Public Works Notice
From: The Department of Public Works, City of Leonard
Regarding: Sanitation Sewer Overflows During the Heavy Rain
Dear Residents of The City of Leonard,
On Thursday January 30th, 2025, the City of Leonard experienced a deluge of rain, topping 4 inches. With the already saturated ground conditions, our sanitary sewer system took on an enormous amount of Inflow and Infiltration (I&I), which has inundated our wastewater system.
You may have noticed manholes and cleanouts overflowing, perhaps your toilets aren’t flushing well, or other side effects from this event.
This memo is to inform you that we are aware of the issues. We also want to assure the citizens of Leonard that the city is addressing these issues. We have a multi-million-dollar upgrade coming to 4 main lines in the city, over the next 3 years.
With each of these overflow events we diligently sanitize the area, record the details of the event, and report to the TCEQ, The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, as per required.
Persons using private drinking water supply wells located within 1/2 mile of the city limits or the potentially affected area should use only water that has been distilled or boiled at a rolling boil for at least one minute for all personal uses including drinking, cooking, bathing, and tooth brushing. Individuals with private water wells should have their well water tested and disinfected, if necessary, before discontinuing distillation or boiling.
The water supplied by your local municipality, whether directly through your faucet or provided to a wholesale customer, is safe to drink and may be used for personal use.
The public should avoid contact with the waste material, soil, or water in the area potentially affected by the overflow. If the public comes into contact with waste material, soil, or water potentially affected by the overflow, they should bathe and wash clothes thoroughly as soon as possible.
The City of Leonard is working diligently to address these overflow issues, including repairing manholes, broken connections, sewer clean-outs, collapsed sewer lines, upgrading pumps, and many other efforts. In addition, the City of Leonard is in the engineering phase of an extensive upgrade to 3 main sewer lines in town: N Cedar to S Sycamore (includes problem areas on Poplar and E Park St), N Connett to W Locust St, and Hwy 69 to the city park. We look forward to that project alleviating issues such as these. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and cooperation.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact: PWD@cityofleonard.net
Thank You, Woody Patrick Public Works Director

Bois d’Arc SLOW. water stained; 47 degrees; 2.96 feet below pool. Bass continue to be slow while water temperatures are 45-48 degrees, but a few places are 50 degrees in the timber. Seems the fish are tight to cover so big bushy trees are best in 5-10 feet of water with Texas rigs or flukes. Offshore brush piles are fair with Texas rigs or Carolina rigs in 18-25 feet. Expect the crappie to become stationary to reserve energy. If the water temperature drops into the 30s a shad kill is possible. If this happens crappie will feed on the shad and follow the fish deep to feed. Crappie are good in 20-60 feet of water on timber in the creek channels. 1-5 fish in a tree but occasionally there will be 20-50 fish. The best approach is a light line with an ⅛ ounce jig. The primary species being caught is black crappie. Texoma FAIR. Water stained; 48 degrees; 1.71 feet below pool. Striper fishing has slowed down with the water levels dropping and the extreme change in weather. Look at humps, ledges, and structure in 1530 feet of water, as well as deep water on ledges and river channels in 55–65 feet of water, using flukes while drifting to cover water. Look for bigger fish to move up into coves and shallow water, chasing big gizzard shad throughout the day. Crappie are on brush and structure in 18–25 feet of water, but target shallower water on warmer days as fish start to move toward creeks and coves on the lake. To target bass, focus on rocks and structures that hold baitfish in warmer water. Use a slow presentation, covering different depths off drop-offs and ledges in 8–15 feet of water. Catfishing is picking up. Look for big blues in shallow water near river inlets, especially with the recent rains and big gizzard shad pulling into the muddy, warmer water. Anchor fish with gizzard shad and cut

Ending An Extended Absence: Youthful Lady Falcons roster has Fannindel back in hoops playoffs
LADONIA -- Memories of an 0-3 start in 19-1A play for Fannindel have been superseded this season -- by the Lady Falcons winning every district basketball game afterwards.
The victory streak has lifted Fannindel -- which, by far, has the smallest enrollment in 19-1A -- into its first girls' basketball postseason since 2018's area-finalist effort. Of note, the winning streak included a 56-49 home win on Jan. 28 over Dodd City -- making the Lady Falcons the first team to defeat the Lady Hornets during district play since 2012. A roster composed mostly of underclassmen has achieved the feat, under new head coach Phillip Eddins.
Sophomore Zabriya Lawerence equated an all-district honorable mention last season and returns for the Lady Falcons who will compete this month in Class 1A's Division-II girls' postseason bracket.

During seven combined innings of work against the University of Minnesota-Crookston and Drury at the Branson Lead-Off Classic in Missouri, she allowed only three hits -- all singles -- and two walks while striking out a pair.
Mauppin earned her first collegiate win on April 12 in her last outing of the 2024 season against Arkansas Tech at home with 2 1/3 innings of work.

for Fannin
Co. girls' hoops squads
By Rich Hilliard
Postseason participants have been determined with regard to which Fannin County girls’ basketball teams have qualified for the various 2025 playoffs brackets.
The top four schools in the final standings per district advance to the respective classification postseasons. The two largest qualifying high schools in each district -- based on numbers submitted for the 2024 biennial realignment -- go into the respective classification’s Division-I bracket and the other two go into its Division-II bracket.
Postseason play commences Monday-Tuesday, February 10-11, with bi-district games.
Dodd City, Fannindel and Savoy advanced from District 19-1A. The Lady Hornets go into the Division-I bracket of the Class 1A postseason as 191A’s top seed, and play Avery at Paris Chisum High School on Monday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in the Region III-1A bidistrict round.
It equates Dodd City’s 15thstraight postseason advance and 13th-consecutive via a girls’ district basketball title. The previous 10 advances have included appearances in the Region III-1A Tournament.
The Lady Falcons and Lady Cardinals go into 1A’s Division-II bracket, seeding determined via a Feb. 7 playin.
It equates Fannindel’s first
postseason since 2018’s area-finalist effort. It equates Savoy’s thirdstraight postseason -- their most consecutive since its six-in-a-row streak concluded in 2014. Honey Grove finished second in 14-2A, to advance to the playoffs for a thirdstraight season from the district. The Lady Warriors, 14-2A’s Division-II top seed, play Lindsay at Howe High School on Monday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m., in the Region II2A Division-II bi-district round.
Leonard secured 11-3A’s fourth-and-final postseason berth -- the Lady Tigers’ first trip to the playoffs since 2020. Leonard advances into the Division-II bracket of the 3A postseason as the district’s second seed.
