to obtain a full account of the exchange and the identity of the citizen involved. The following is a summary of the exchange:
Citizen to the Court:
“You’re fully aware that a business has built a bridge on private property there in Ravenna, at the north end of County Road 1135, without a permit over the creek, and it’s also in the FEMA flood plain, and it’s too low. They did it without a permit, and it’s in violation of FEMA requirements and our floodplain requirements.”
County Judge to Citizen: (summary) Letters have been sent to the offending party(s).
The bridge is in an isolated part of the county. There are county issues with higher priorities that require the county’s attention.
They Live Among Us
Yes, there are Fannin County residents who would deliberately cause hardships on other citizens of the county. A recent example of this occurred in Commissioners Court on February 4, 2025. An exchange occurred
between a Fannin County citizen and the Fannin County Judge. The exchange can be viewed and listened to on the “Commissioners Court Recordings” on the Fannin County website (the link to the recording is located at the bottom of this letter). I urge you to listen to the recording
Citizen to the Court: The citizen continues to make his case for the county to take a more proactive stand on this issue. At some point in his argument, he makes the following statement, and I quote, “So it’s an issue. I’m to the point now, if we can’t get nothing done, I’m just going to contact FEMA and see if we cannot just get Fannin County denied any FEMA. You take
care of it, because I’ve been patiently waiting.”
The exchange continues on. This issue appears to be a pet peeve of the citizen. The citizen appears to be more interested in getting his way, even if it causes the citizens of the county to lose FEMA flood insurance funding.
My opinion: Fannin County cannot afford to chase down issues that have little-to-no impact on our citizens. It’s time to stop bullying the commissioners and County Judge to address pet peeves. Many important regulations have been put into place over the past two years that will have a positive impact for generations, if we keep them in place and continue to enforce them. Generally speaking, our elected officials are doing a good job of governance and have the county headed in the right direction. Let’s all do our parts to stop the negative and destructive manipulation of the commissioners and County Judge. Encourage them to continue to work on the county’s behalf to improve the quality of life in Fannin County.

These puff pastry cheese straws are excellent for an easy appetizer option or for dipping in soup! And did I mention you only need five ingredients to bring them to life?
PUFF PASTRY CHEESE STRAWS with WHITE CHEDDAR and BLACK PEPPER
1 large puff pastry defrosted but still cold to the touch, 10
pinch of salt, optional
Preheat your oven to 375° and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Make sure your oven rack is in the middle of the oven. Beat one egg in a bowl with one Tbsp. of water until it's mixed well and pale yellow in color. Set aside. Sprinkle your counter with a small handful of flour and then sprinkle ⅓ c. of the shredded cheddar on top of the flour. Next, use your hands to gently unroll the sheet of puff pastry onto the flour/cheese mixture. Brush the whole sheet with the egg wash. (Set aside the remaining egg wash, you'll use it again in a minute). Sprinkle the remaining c. of cheese on the top half of the puff pastry, then sprinkle the black pepper evenly over the top (and a pinch of salt, if using). Pull the bottom half of the puff pastry up over the top, folding it in half. Now take your rolling pin, and gently roll the folded puff pastry until it's about twice as big as it was before. Now, using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut the puff pastry into 8-10 strips. Grab the top and bottom of each strip, and gently twist each one. Place it on the parchment paper. Repeat for

As we conclude our gardening series, we know that the emerald green of our lawns is the foundation for a visually stunning landscape. To increase the likelihood of a healthy, barefoot welcoming carpet, we must attend to a few tasks.
Between Feb 1 and March 15, apply pre-emergent to the lawn to control spring germinating weeds; and, then water it in lightly to get the granules off the leaves and onto the soil.
For cool-season, non-grassy plants (some consider them weeds) such as clover, henbit, dandelions, and chickweed, apply a broad-leafed weed killer containing 2-4-D when daytime temperatures will be above 70 degrees and no rain expected for 48 hours.
Continue to mulch leaves from the lawn and remove the debris to reduce disease and insect problems. Add this to the compost pile!
Continue to irrigate the lawn once every three weeks or so. However, 1” of rain should alleviate the need for additional irrigation. Repair any irrigation hoses and drip lines. Sprinkle food grade diatomaceous earth on fire ants and make them disappear.
POOF! Ants be gone!

Bake the cheese straws for 20-24 minutes (make sure to start checking them around the 20 minute mark), or until they're flaky and golden or cooked to your liking. Thicker straws will take longer. I

It is a great paradox that we live in an era of unprecedented connectivity through technology and social media, yet so many feel so very alone. We can even feel alone in a crowd. Loneliness is an emotion, but it affects us physically, mentally, and spiritually. The root cause of loneliness is the lack of deep, meaningful relationships.
The cure for loneliness is found in an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When we walk with Him, we are never truly alone. This dynamic relationship with Jesus also brings us into connection with His Body, the church. In the Body of Christ, we find community, common goals, and a network of brothers and sisters with whom we can share life. In Galatians 6:2, we are commanded to “bear one another’s burdens, and so
12-18-18
fulfill the law of Christ.” In Romans 12:15, we are called to “rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” As we worship here at Calvary today, may we find the true cure for loneliness through Jesus and community with His Body, the church.
For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
Hello everyone!
This week’s devotion comes from 1 Timothy 4. In this passage, the apostle Paul is reminding Timothy to never ignore the gifts from God that he’s been given, and to use his gifts for God’s will. We, as Christians, should always use the gifts and talents that we’ve been given in that same manner. Whether it be through teaching, preaching, singing, or what have you, these talents can all be used for His will and glorification. We should use these gifts with confidence, persistence, and diligence. This chapter places an emphasis on the importance of making our
spiritual choices. Good spiritual practice is important when we consider Paul’s advice to Timothy, and to us as well, in this chapter.
I am reminded of a classic hymn written by Howard B. Grose. This is reminiscent of what Paul commanded to Timothy, and what we the Lord commands from us.
“Give of your best to the Master; Give of the strength of your youth; Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor Into the battle for truth. Jesus has set the example, Dauntless was He, young and brave; Give Him your loyal
devotion; Give Him the best that you have. Give of your best to the Master; Give of the strength of your youth; Clad in salvation’s full armor, Join in the battle for truth.”
If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit us, and be part of our church family and worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Jude penned these words in the 26th book of the New Testament, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3). We know that Christianity is not a physical contest for earthly power, not a struggle over land and geography, nor is it a political battle. Paul emphasizes that “ For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). Again Paul wrote, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4). Paul told Timothy to “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:12). Paul, at the end of his life, wrote “I have fought a good fight, I have finished [my] course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). The word “contending” implies that there are at least two opposing sides. We are talking about “spiritually contending” and that specifies just two sides; God’s side and the devil’s side. Jesus stated “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad” (Matthew 12:30). Peter warned us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world” (1 Peter 5:8-9). How does the Christian “earnestly contend for the faith?” It is in the conversations that we have when we promote God. When David stood before Goliath, “David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied” (1 Samuel 17:45). We “earnestly contend when we give answers. Peter encourages us to “sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give
an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). We are reminded that “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost” (2 Corinthians 4:3).

BONHAM -- Returning to being a Class 4A school this athletic year has not fazed Bonham's soccer teams. Unlike the school's other sports, which vied in 3A districts the last six years, soccer has competed in 4A districts since its inaugural campaigns in 2013. Bonham vies again this season and next in 11-4A which now includes Aubrey, Celina, Farmersville, Frisco Panther Creek, Gainesville and Pilot Point. Amongst the group, only Pilot Point (461) had a smaller submitted enrollment number to the University Interscholastic League for the 2024 biennial realignment than Bonham (560). SBA Disaster News Release – SBA Relief Still Available to Texas Small Businesses and Private Nonprofits Affected by Spring Storms and Flooding Deadline to Apply for Economic Injury Loans Approaching
SACRAMENTO, Calif.
– The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding eligible small businesses and private nonprofit
(PNP) organizations in Texas of the deadline to apply for low interest federal disaster loans to offset economic losses caused by adverse weather conditions that occurred in March and May of 2024.
The disaster declarations cover the counties listed below:
Declaration Number: 20461
Primary Counties: Lampasas
Neighboring Counties: Bell, Burnet, Coryell, Hamilton, Mills and San Saba
Incident Type: Flooding, Excessive Rain and Flash Flood
Incident Date: May 4-5, 2024
Deadline: 3/10/2025
Declaration Number: 20462
Primary Counties: Hunt
Neighboring Counties: Collin, Delta, Fannin, Hop-
kins, Kaufman, Rains, Rockwall and Van Zandt
Incident Type: Flooding and Excessive Rain
Incident Date: Beginning March 11, 2024
Deadline: 3/10/2025
Under these declarations, the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to eligible small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, nurseries, and PNPs that suffered financial losses directly related to the disaster. The SBA is unable to provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers, except for aquaculture enterprises.
EIDLs are available for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the business did not suffer any physical damage. The loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll,
accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.
The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates of 4% for small businesses and 3.25% for PNPs, with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not accrue, and payments are not due, until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement.
The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition. By law, SBA makes EIDLs available when the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster.
The Secretary declared these declarations on July 9, 2024. Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency about the U.S. Department of Agriculture assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration.
The SBA encourages applicants to submit their loan applications promptly. Applications will be prioritized in the order they are received, and the SBA remains committed to processing them as efficiently as possible. To apply online and receive additional disaster assistance information visit sba.gov/disaster. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services. Submit completed loan applications to the SBA no later than March 10.

Tanna Gail Carpenter, a mother, wife, sister, aunt and descendent of one of the earliest pioneer families of Fannin county, died February 9th, 2025 in her home in Honey Grove, Texas. Tanna’s early years were spent in Oakdale, Louisiana where she attended high school and played the flute and piccolo in the highly awarded Oakdale High School Band. She graduated high school in 1975 and would go on to graduate from East Texas State University in 1982 with a degree in photography.
Tanna was a lifelong artist, maker and creative spirit. After graduation, Tanna worked at a specialized Dallas photography studio, where she was valued as a skilled developer using original development techniques and technology. She then partnered with her mother, Gail Carpenter, at their women’s clothing boutique, Rhapsody in Rose, in Dallas and Greenville, Texas. During this time Tanna was also creating and successfully selling her own handmade silver and beaded jewelry throughout the country. Eventually Tanna joined her husband, Charlie Gilder, in running their popular punk-dive nightclub in Dallas, The Bar of Soap.
Tanna had her first and only child, Lola Gilder, in 2000 and would return to the Honey Grove area to raise her daughter in the Dial, Texas Community on land originally ceded to her family by the Republic of Texas in 1836. Tanna never stopped working with her hands. Her free time was spent creating intricate crochet projects, crafting with all mediums and making many precious pieces of jewelry for her family. Tanna was a huge history buff and music lover and would take any chance she had to share her knowledge with others. Her humor and lovingly-eccentric personality will be sorely missed.
Her parents Gail Bernice Carpenter and James Oscar Carpenter predeceased her. She is also survived by her sister Jamie Ann Ferguson of Honey Grove, Texas, her nephew Nathan Lyday Ferguson and wife Madison Ferguson, their two children Tildon and Truett of Cooper, Texas and niece Natalie Gail Ferguson of Austin, Texas. “You’d be wrong,” said Emma, she of the kind smile carrying the ready coffee pot. “Spent five years up there. Down here in winter, you get cold. Up there in winter, you get dead.”
She had our rapt attention. “You mean chill factors and stuff like that?” asked Doc.
“Nope,” Emma said. “Want me to warm that cup for you, Steve?”
Steve nodded. Cup appropriately topped off. She set the coffee pot down on the next table, which was empty. “They invented ways to kill people up there. In winter, it’s the williwaw.”
“Willy-what?” “Williwaw. It’s a wind, sorta,” she said. “And if it hits you, you probably are going to die. It starts up at the top of a mountain and blows straight down a slope into whatever’s at the bottom. Blew one guy clear across Cook Inlet to the other side. The police said if the inlet hadn’t been frozen
over, he’d have drowned.”
“Well, that was a lucky thing, wasn’t it?”
“It woulda been if he hadn’t froze to death on the way down.”

Bois d’Arc SLOW. water stained; 47 degrees; 2.87 feet below pool. Lake level is still low, but rising some. Water temperature is 45-49 degrees, and is slightly warmer behind heavy timber lines. Suspending jerkbaits are good around bushes and trees in 5-7 feet. Texas rigs and Viper XP jigs good around bigger standing timber or brush piles 5-7 feet or 15-18 feet on brush piles. Expect the crappie to become stationary to reserve energy. If the water temperature drops into the 30s a shad kill is possible. If this happens crappie will feed on the shad and follow the fish deep to feed. Crappie are good in 20-60 feet of water on timber in the creek channels. 1-5 fish in a tree but occasionally there will be 20-50 fish. The best approach is a light line with an ⅛ ounce jig. The primary species being caught is black crappie.
Texoma FAIR. Water stained; 48 degrees; 2.81 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is a little slower with the arctic blast but will pick up soon after the warmup. Fish are still in deep water along river channels and flats in 50-65 feet of water. Flukes and swimbaits suspended above the fish drifting .5-1 mph. Catfishing is decent seeing bigger blues come off shallow flats and ditches in 5-15 feet of water. Anchored up with cut shad and whole gizzard shad. Crappie are on deep structure and brush in 18-25 feet of water near creeks and coves. A slow presentation using electronics to locate active fish. Bass fishing is slow with the drop in lake levels and water temperature. Look for fish to move up in coves and on rocky banks on sunny days. Fish creeks and stumps looking for the gizzard shad this time of year for bigger bass to be feeding. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service.
