Fannin County Call to Prayer –“Give us Revival”
By Rose Schwartz
Late in the afternoon on Sunday, April 23rd, under clearing
skies and brisk cool winds, segments of Fannin County’s faithful were drawn to the lawn of Bonham’s recently restored
Fannin County Courthouse. Representatives from various fundamentalist faiths came to join their prayers with the prayers of like-minded believers to pray for their communities and for revival.
The event, “Fannin County Call to Prayer” was the brainchild of approximately ten devout men of Fannin County whose desire is to help bring about revival amongst the body of Christ in Fannin County during these challenging times for believers and non-believers alike. Reciting passages of scriptures, exhorting one another to put aside differences and unite as one body to seek God to bring about needed
change through revival; Darrel Hathcock of Fannin County Baptist Association was the first to lead attendees in prayer. He would be followed by Pastor Josh Lott of Ivanhoe Baptist Church, Pastor Lyn Holly of Calvary Baptist Church in Bonham, Fannin County
Judge Newt Cunningham, Pastor Kevin Towery of Allen’s Point Baptist Church in Honey Grove, Pastor Cary Kinnaird of Corinth Baptist Church in Ravenna and Lead Sponsor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Joe Goodson along
with FCA’s co-sponsor Retired BISD Coach Elizabeth Holman. Encouraging a stirring environment of worship, was the soulful Contemporary Christian music from the combined talents of the youth/ music ministers; Josh Holly of Calvary Baptist Church and Colby Rich and his son Connor Rich of Seventh and Main Baptist Church of Bonham.

stop spending our tax dollars after two NO votes in the same year.
I am not anti-tax, anti-public school, nor anti-new construction. I do want a comprehensive plan for the entire BISD looking at growth, consolidation of campuses, streamlining of administration, improving our current bond rating for lower interest rates, and BISD has a plan if this bond proposal fails. They do not like it, but it will not cost $117.2 million. Delayed maintenance will be completed, new portable classrooms will be added and a realignment of grade levels within existing buildings will get us through while a better overall plan and more favorable loans are worked out.
Every vote counts, support local businesses and the regeneration of tax dollars by looking at the amount of BISD’s current budget is spent out of county and almost all the $117.2 million bond will leave the county.
Please, go vote, only you will know how you cast your ballot. Fail or pass, be part of the decision process.
Thank you for your time.

Triumph Over Sin
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Satan never advertises sin for what it really is. The Roman brethren were reminded that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). James also stated that “sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15).
Paul wrote that “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23) and that “the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe” (Galatians 3:22).
Again, Paul stated that “The sting of death is sin … but thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57).
Of Christ it is said, “now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself”
(Hebrews 9:26). Peter said
that “Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18). John recorded that “Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5).
How do we triumph over sin?
Peter said, “repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). We are to be baptized by the authority of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. Mark recorded the words of Jesus, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). Christ told the disciples to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”
Fannin County
(Matthew 28:19). People are baptized for the remission of sins, for salvation, because God authorizes this command. Saul, who would later be called Paul, was told “be baptized, and wash away thy sins” (Acts 22:16).
The cross of Christ was a triumph over sin. We must be obedient to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul wrote that “the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Again, it is stated “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth” (Romans 1:16).
Sunday Morning Retake “Teach Me, Lord, To Wait”
Hello everyone!
One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Isaiah 40:31. I will quote it in this week’s hymn reference. Oftentimes in this life we get in a hurry for things to happen. We must remember that God’s timing is not the same as ours. When we make our requests known to Him, he may not answer us right away, but He will answer us in His own time. We must step out in faith and wait upon Him.
One of the most well-known writers in gospel music is the late Stuart Hamblen. He wrote such classic songs as, “Known Only to Him,” “Until Then,” and “It Is No Secret.” In 1953,
he wrote this song that is based on Isaiah 40:31.
“Teach me, Lord, to wait down on my knees, Til in your own good time you answer my pleas.
Teach me not to rely on what others may do, But to wait in prayer for an answer from You.”
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run, and not grow weary. They shall walk and not faint. Teach me, Lord, teach me, Lord, to wait.”

Mental Health Issues- Fact or Fiction
John E. Hunt, Sr., Deputy Constable PCT 3
Crime Prevention Initiative
Today in America there are a significant number of people that suffer from and take medication for various types of mental disorders. The Diagnostic and Standard Manual of Mental Health (DSM-5) defines “Mental illnesses are diseases of the brain (McNally 2011).“ That is a broad term as experts agree the disorders listed in the DSM-5 are hard to define, however DSM-5 does give good guidelines for the different disorders. There can be more than one disorder involved with a person.
When you look at mental health in our society today you can basically break it down into four (4) categories and each has its own set of problems that require different treatments. Civilians, Military (veterans/ active service), First Responders (law enforcement, fire, EMS, veterans/ active service) and incarcerated inmates in county and state jails.
In the civilian category there are the persons with short-term PTSD caused by a wreck or traumatic event. Most of the time that will subside at some point. The main problem is long term caused by long term sexual abuse or emotional abuse that will never be re-
solved and it is not uncommon for a person to commit suicide.
A great deal of trauma is associated with long term sexual assault, especially by a family member. There is no age limit on these as it may be as early as a young child being sexually assaulted or witnessing violence in a traumatic event.
The next group is the military, active, retired /out of service. Starting with Vietnam forward we have many veterans, active, retired and still in that are experiencing long term PTSD because of what was seen in combat or just by being in the combat theater under threat every day. This is not something you leave behind

when you come home. The combat vet lives it as hypervigilant because of daily contact, that doesn’t change when he comes home. The returning active-duty member has a bad day at the office, comes home to take it out on wife/husband and kids. All at one time have tried pills or alcohol to sleep.
First responders, law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel get to see and deal with humanity at its worst. Whether it be a violent crime, an accident or a fire the adrenaline pumps and when its over or goes down there is still the memory in the mind’s eye that retains it and there it is again in the dreams. Reoccurring dreams are prevalent in all these groups and events. There is a great poem, “Tasting the Tears” that does a good job of stating what we all feel at one time or another as public servants. This, like the other categories, doesn’t stop at retirement, and for many that’s when it becomes dangerous. The suicide rate among
law enforcement and fire personnel is almost as high as veterans.
The incarcerated inmate in the county jails and state prisons pose a real problem in the mental health field as by in large they do not get the help they need. State inmates do better than county because they are long term and get long term care. In a conversation some time ago with a staff member at the Fannin County jail I asked that percentage he thought presently housed there had mental issues. His answer without hesitation was 80%. Having worked in jails and having a Mental Health Peace Officer certification this is not an unrealistic number. Do they get the help they need? Not always. Jailers use a questionnaire on book in that ask questions about mental issues, veterans are supposed to be given a card to request help through the VA. Inmates are supposed to be seen for evaluation if they answer yes to the questions. Without the meds that can cause a great deal of problems for the inmate as well as the jail staff. According to the
American Psychological Association demands for mental health professionals continues to rise since COVID 19. The 242 jails in Texas have seen a 9% rise in populations in the last year with increases in assaults, deaths and suicides. A significant number of jails are understaffed, and few jailers are long term employees.
Every county jail that sells commissary, candy and such, gets a percentage back that goes into a fund controlled by the county Sheriff. However, according to jail standards rules money can only be used to support the inmates. Jail Standard Rules, Per. Sec.351.0415 clearly states how that fund is controlled and what those funds can be used for. Section “C” states how the sheriff may spend the money and (C) (5) gives the Sheriff the authority to “fund----------programs, services, and activities that provide for the wellbeing, HEALTH, safety and security of the inmates and the facility”. Several Sheriffs have used this money to fund a liaison position under the sheriff’s office to ensure mental health is addressed.
In all these groups of victims and the disorders listed in DSM-5 (over 100) there is an extremely high risk of suicide. We hear a lot about “22 A Day” on soldier and veteran suicides, realistically that number is more like 24 a day, also relates to law enforcement and fire personnel. Victims is the civilian category, as well as inmates, adds in there also. Mental health is an issue affecting almost every family in America today. We hear a lot of lip service but what really gets done? As a two-year member of the Texoma Community Center (old MHMR) Board of Directors I watched funding cut at state and federal level. Money cut program gone. How do we take care of our citizens? More training for our law enforcement so they know how to react to various disorders, spend available money to make sure all the organizations that can help link up together.

Dogs and Cats Are Not Natural Enemies
By Gregg Flowers
10/4/22
Contrary to what is portrayed in cartoons, dogs and cats aren't natural enemies. The perfect example of peaceable co-existence between these two animals is evidenced by the many photographs we've all seen of dogs and cats curled up, snoozing together, for example. The idea that
dogs and cats hate each other prevails because it's true that dogs often like to chase cats (prey drive). But when a dog doesn't like cats it's either because he had a bad experience with one when he was little, or because he picks up on the fear of a cat. The same goes for cats who don't like dogs. A prior negative occurrence involving a dog shapes future fears and animosity. Sometimes so called "dog people" don't like
kitties, and often "cat people" don't really dig dogs either, so our vibes can greatly influence our pets as well, believe it or not.
Both dogs and cats are predators, but dogs are pack animals, and cats are loners. While dogs are driven to fit into the family (pack) hierarchy, Felix couldn't care less about that, as long as his needs are met. Dogs and cats are "tuned in to different stations" mentally. Whereas a cat is preoccupied with a detailed awareness of it's surroundings, a dog is more interested in keeping up with his people, than exploring. If you want to have a cat and a dog in the same household, the very best case scenario would be to introduce them as little ones. Puppies and kittens raised like this learn to

accept each other as siblings. But sometimes we have an incumbent, and we bring an outsider into the pack, be it a dog or a cat. In spite of the differences between these two animals, these situations can work if you're patient and you proceed judiciously. - Next time I'll share some ideas on how to get that done.

Forgetful?..... Not Me!

My twin brother had an argument with his wife. She wanted him to take a list of 3 things to buy at a grocery store. He said he didn't need it, but she shoved the list in his pocket.
After getting the things, he wore the ears off of those behind him in a long check-out line. He preached that wives didn't trust their husbands to remember 3 things.
As he was leaving the store, everyone laughed when the clerk yelled, "Hey mister, you forgot your groceries!"

Fannin County Prayer
Continued from page 1
Towards the conclusion of the event Joe Goodson first cited Proverbs 14:34 before reading from the Naked Communist by W. Cleon Skousen to illustrate to concerned participants some of the harmful to the family, 45 goals of communism from 1963 that are already in place and being readily accepted as “normal” in our culture. He stressed the need for the people of God to get right with God and pray for revival for the sake of our younger generation before citing II Chronicles 7:14 as a reason for hope, when God’s people pray. Josh Lott then wrapped up the event asking attendees to once again gather into small groups to pray and
to continue after this event, to gather together as often as possible to pray for revival.
(Note: The National Day of Prayer will also be hosted on the Courthouse grounds May 4th at noon.)
After the event, when asked about the Bonham Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Ms. Holman noted the organization’s goal is to assist student athletes and coaches with positive influence and guidance via Bible study meetings, Camps and Game-day events to help encourage Christ centered attitudes. She further added those businesses and or individuals who wish to know more about and/or how to support this organization that supports youths in a day when traditional family values are constantly under attack, can contact her at holman_e_@hotmail.com or FCA sponsor Joe Goodson at joe.goodson@bonhamisd.org

Bonham’s Other Railroad –
The D. B. & N.O. (operated by the Katy)
were two round trips per day. The entire trip was 28 miles. Financial problems caused operations to cease in 1928.
In 1928 the freight had included corn, cotton, cottonseed meal, watermelons, potatoes and peanuts, and there were 12 employees. Reportedly the depot and the tracks were removed in 1929.
If you have wondered why there is a street in Bonham named Katy, this is why.
And if you have wondered why the caboose at the Fannin County Museum of History has a Katy logo on it, it is because we honor both Bonham railroads.
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History
The 13th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham
The idea for another railroad in Bonham apparently began as early as 1886, when the Bonham News reported on a meeting in Denison for a charter for the Denison, Bonham and New Orleans railroad.
The idea was to take the railroad all the way to New Orleans through connections with other railroads in Hunt and Delta counties and then to Marshall and New Orleans. However, it never got past Bonham.
A surveying party started out in February 1887. The work of constructing the railroad suffered a setback in June 1889 when the roadbed was washed out by heavy
rains.
The corporate history is complex, but by 1901 the company was out of money and the Katy stepped in and rechartered it, and completed the track.
It was not until 1902 that the railroad was up and running.
The route was from Denison to Ambrose, then into Fannin County to Anthony. Then east to Ravenna, with a possible stop at Spies Switch, through what became the Bonham golf course, then across 78, swinging to East Bonham and down to Kathy Boulevard terminating at a turntable near where General Cable was located. No photo of the Bonham depot, which was north of the Texas & Pacific Depot, has been found. However, it is shown on the 1909 Sanborn map.
It was a daily passenger train and then by 1907 there

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 67 degrees. Crappie are good along the banks and creeks using jigs and minnows. Catfish are good with cut shad.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 64-74 degrees; 1.26 feet below pool. Bass fishing is tough unless you can catch the spawners on beds. Some post spawn fish are moving out on main lake points, secondary points, and high spots near spawning areas biting Carolina rigs. For bass in 3-7 feet of water the best baits are green pumpkin magic and watermelon candy flukest, and in 2-5 feet of water with spinnerbaits.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.13 feet below pool. Every day the shad are spawning in the morning, so watch for bird action. After the rains, white bass pushed into the creek systems. This could be one of the last runs for the season. We are very close to the end of the spawning runs for the white bass. Starting to see more and more crappie piling up on offshore structures 9-20 feet. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is stained; 65 degrees; 0.03 feet above pool. WBass are good shallow on spinnerbaits. White bass are good on slabs in 25 feet of water. Crappie are on the brush piles, with mostly undersized catches on jigs or minnows. Report by Jim Walling, Ucatchem Guide Service.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 62 degrees; 0.08 feet below pool. Hybrid striper and white bass bite is steady. Fish are feeding under huge herds of threadfin shad right now, so swimbaits and slabs are working best in 1835 feet of water. The catfish bite is great. Fish have moved up shallow and we are seeing a consistent blue catfish bite in 2-7 feet of water. The channel catfish bite is good in 1535 feet of water on prepared baits. Crappie are good and spawning in shallow water.
TO...
During archery-only deer season, a Coke County game warden received a call from a local rancher concerned that his neighbor was hunting deer with firearms. The warden, who was enjoying the World Series at home on his day off, headed to the ranch. Once there, he set up a concealed area where he could observe any illegal hunting. Just after sundown, the warden heard a high-powered shot about 500 yards from his position. A minute later, he heard another shot. The warden waited, then made his way into the ranch to investigate. As he pulled up to the camp, two men and one woman were quartering two whitetail does. The men admitted to shooting the deer and showed the warden the rifles they used. They produced hunting licenses with no tags removed and no harvest logs completed. The quartered deer were also missing proof of sex, which was later discovered in a ravine behind the cabin. The warden recovered both deer. Cases were filed, along with civil restitution.
Catfish Surprise Trinity County and Angelina County Game Wardens, along with a regional chaplain, patrolled the Neches River, checking for hoop nets. They located one containing about 22 catfish. With bad weather impending, the wardens surmised that the fisherman might check the net later that evening.
The chaplain and a warden built a blind to watch for the fisherman’s return. The other wardens strategically parked their patrol vehicles and waited. Approximately 40 minutes later, the team in the blind heard a truck pull up and park on the opposite side of the river. The fishermen exited the vehicle, grabbed a pre-baited net and threw the net into the river. The
6545
net resembled the one found 50 yards away. Wardens initiated contact with the surprised fishermen from both sides of the river. Multiple citations for illegal means and methods were filed. Cases pending.
No Ducks on the Pond
An employee with a mobile home park contacted Harrison County Game Wardens to report 18 duck carcasses in the park dumpster. Following a lead from the property manager, wardens identified and located the suspect. The suspect confessed that he attended a guided duck hunt and accepted ducks from two other hunters without a wildlife resource document. Following the hunt, the suspect threw the ducks in the bed of his truck and traveled elsewhere for another hunt the next day. Back at home, the suspect said he no longer felt like cleaning the ducks and threw them in the park dumpster. Multiple citations and warnings were issued for failing to keep ducks in edible condition, possession of ducks without a wildlife resource document, violation of daily bag limit of lesser scaup and over the limit possession. Civil restitution pending. Fly, Eagles, Fly Caldwell County Game Warden Joann Garza-Mayberry responded to an injured bald eagle call. She arrived to find the mature bald eagle unable to fly. Warden Mayberry captured the eagle for transport to Austin Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Elgin. Along the way, she visited a local school for an impromptu wildlife program on eagles. Veterinarians determined that the eagle suffered a broken right wing. It was not clear what caused the injury. The attending vet chose to explore medical opinions on the best course of treatment for the eagle.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 65 degrees; 2.02 feet below pool. The striped bass bite is picking up now that the spawn is coming to an end. Stripers are taking advantage of the shad spawn feeding in shallow water. These fish can be caught on topwater lures. The slab bite is picking up in the deeper water. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striper fishing is great on live shad anchoring or drifting flats between 35-50 feet of water. Shad spawn is hit-and-miss, but there are a lot of fish on the rocky banks throughout the day you can catch on top waters or 5 inch swimbaits. Crappie are fair on soft jigs over brush in 5-8 feet of water. On warmer days look for fish to be in the creeks. Minnows and hair jigs are working in exposed brush. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair on live shad fishing the bluffs along the south end of the lake off the ledges in 8-12 feet of water. Big numbers of smaller fish can be caught

Weight Loss Tips From a Woman Who Lost 50 Pounds
(StatePoint) Life is full of memorable events – both big and small. But sometimes, when you don’t feel your best, those moments can seem like a blur. With her upcoming wedding approaching, Audrey B. was determined to enjoy this special time in her life, but there was one thing standing in her way – her own selfconfidence.
“I no longer felt comfortable in my own skin,” says Audrey. “I knew I needed to focus on my health and wellness goals so that I could feel my best in time for my wedding.”
And that’s just what she did. By the time her big day rolled around, Audrey had lost 50 pounds. “I can honestly say I’m happier and healthier than ever before. And now I actually enjoy eating healthy and
staying active,” explains Audrey, who found success using Nutrisystem.
If you have an upcoming event in your life or you’re simply looking to commit to a healthier lifestyle, these simple tips, which helped Audrey on her weight loss journey, may help you too.
Use Portion Control. Did you know that over the last few decades, portion sizes in restaurants and at dinner tables have grown? That means oftentimes you’re eating more than you need to, which can hinder your weight loss efforts. With Nutrisystem, meals are perfectly portioned and set you up for success so that you’re not overindulging.
Add Veggies to Every Meal. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to replace
high-calorie, low-fiber foods with low-calorie, high-fiber foods like vegetables. Highfiber foods can help you feel full faster so it’s important to add them to every meal. Vegetables are great for snacking too. For example, try grabbing a bowl of carrots or slices of bell pepper instead of potato chips.
Drink More Water. Water has so many benefits, from increasing energy and relieving fatigue to boosting your immune system and of course, promoting weight loss. Water can help you feel full and potentially eat less. In fact, sometimes a glass of water is enough to curb what you thought was hunger. If you have a hard time reaching your water intake goal, you can use an app, like Nutrisystem’s
NuMi, to send you reminders and track what you consume. Get Moving. A key part of living a healthier lifestyle is making sure you move more. One of the most simple and effective exercises that can be done anywhere is jumping rope. It’s not only a solid cardiovascular workout, it’s great for challenging your coordination and stamina. No matter what exercise you choose, moving your body for 30 minutes per day can have great benefits. You can even break that 30 minutes into three 10-minute sessions to make it less daunting.
If you have a transformation story like Audrey, visit story. nutrisystem.com to share your journey with Nutrisystem for a chance to win a share of $50,000. For more great tips
How a Nursing Career in Home Healthcare Can Help Expand Care Access
com.
(StatePoint) For those who are in hospice, recovering from an injury or illness, or who have long-term disabilities, home healthcare can be an ideal solution. It delivers cost-effective, high-quality care in the setting where patients most often want to be -- home. Unfortunately, access to this important service varies by region, with particular shortages in rural areas, often where the need is highest. Industry experts say that nurses who make the switch to treating patients at home can help close the gap.
“I’ve seen firsthand how home healthcare is so often the best choice for patients, translating to better adherence to care management plans and an improved quality of life,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare, Inc., a nurse with real-world experience herself, and a nationally recognized leader and advocate for continued funding for home healthcare.
Whether you’re still in nursing school or a seasoned professional, here are some of the top reasons to consider a career in home healthcare:
Career Consistency
A career in home healthcare can be a seamless transition for nurses of all specializations, experiences and backgrounds. While many home healthcare patients are older adults, home healthcare actually offers the full continuum of care, and is designed for patients of all ages with a range of chronic and acute conditions. What’s more, home healthcare careers can deliver benefits like good worklife balance, flexible hours you can set yourself, rewarding assignments and competitive pay.
Big Impact
The last few years have put unbearable pressure on nurses everywhere, making it difficult to provide the personalized care patients deserve. The care delivered in patients’ homes however, empowers nurses to make a true impact on health outcomes. And it goes beyond that. In areas of the country where there are home healthcare shortages, patients and their families are often faced with tough decisions and difficult circumstances, including extended hospital stays. Home nurses can alleviate strain on the healthcare systems of under-serviced communities by improving access to at-home care.
Major providers of home healthcare are actively hiring nurses right now, including Interim HealthCare, which has locally-owned and operated franchises nationwide. To learn more about home care careers, visit careers.interimhealthcare.

Audrey, she admits to feeling more self-assured than ever before as a result of prioritizing her health, “I now have confidence that I didn’t even know was possible.”

Three-time State qualifier

Meanwhile, Eli Heyen and Mercedez Trinidad of Hondo defeated Bonham's Jagger Lindsey and Alli Kirkpatrick, 6-4, 6-1, in 3A mixed doubles.

Bonham sophomore Hingrid Pedraza garnered one of three utility player superlatives awarded by District 11-4A girls' soccer for the 2023 season.
Pedraza helped the Lady Warriors contend for their first postseason in the sport since 2016 throughout their 2023 district campaign. She had her team's lone goal on March 4 during a 3-1 home loss against Frisco Panther Creek -- a match in which Bonham entered in a three-way tie for third place.
The Lady Warriors finished in fifth place in 11-4A at 3-7 -- one spot out of the playoffs.
Bonham will remain in 2024 in 11-4A -- again led this season by Celina, which repeated as the 4A State girls' champion, and Region II-4A runner-up Anna.

Exhilarating Ensuing Effort: Rebels follow historic hoops campaign w/run to District 12-2A baseball title
boys' basketball team also ended its 2022-23 campaign.
"You could see the difference when our guys returned from the gym," said third-year Sam Rayburn baseball manager Austin Jones.
The Rebels came to practice on April 24 as winners of 15-straight games -- the last 12-consecutive during 12-2A play -- and assured of entering their eighth-consecutive postseason as the overall district champion.

IVANHOE -- Having its best basketball season in decades had effects on an ensuing endeavor of the boys at Class 2A
Sam Rayburn: baseball.
While the Rebels completed their historic boys' basketball campaign -- first regional semifinal appearance since 1983, after winning an outright district title -- the diamond team -- sans several starters shared with the gym sport -- initially struggled.
Sam Rayburn began its baseball season with three-consecutive losses -- the third, coincidentally, on March 3, when the
"It's been nice," said Riker Stewart, senior starting second baseman and also a reliever, of the continued success. "We didn't have much [baseball] practice, but we didn't lose any momentum
[from basketball]."
"The intensity has carried over into baseball," said junior Drew Baker, starting pitcher and shortstop. "We've kept working hard and had 100 percent focus ...,"
Particularly, during 12-2A play, the basketball players' return has included for Sam Rayburn six shutouts and three other district baseball wins in which the Rebels allowed only a single run per victory, through April 24. "[We] throw strikes," said junior starting pitcher Colin Clark, one of the few nonbasketball players on the baseball team. "We've been able to not walk a lot [of batters]," said Clark, "and have thrown balls away and made [opponents] hit ground balls."
"You got to have both -- defense and pitching," said Jones, "the deeper into the postseason you go."
The Rebels, 122A's No. 1 seed in the 2A playoffs, will begin their postseason against Era, 11-2A's No. 4 qualifier for the 2A playoffs, in the bi-district round. "It's been exhila-
rating [this season]," said senior designated hitter Morgan Hagerty. "It's been the hard work we've done on and off the field.
"You definitely see the hard work we put in in practice," said Hagerty, "in what we've pulled off this year."
In 2022, Sam Rayburn made its second-straight area-round advance under Jones. Both trips equated the Rebels' deepest in baseball since consecutive runs to the regional quarterfinals in 2017 and 2018. "Having fall ball [afterward, in 2022] helped," said Jones.
"We were a young group last year: three freshmen and two sophomores," he said. "We got reps last year and have had some carryover.
"We know now what happens at that level."
