the Fannin county Amateur Radio Club, local county police chiefs and sponsors, the Chamber successfully brought back the ride after a 3-year hiatus, welcoming 200 riders in 2023. Autumn in Bonham holds the distinction of being a Century Mile ride and features 4 paved routes, and 3 gravel routes, and the return of a 13 mile “family” route all within Fannin County. Participants of past rides will recognize familiar landmarks along the 24-, 40-, 65- & 100-mile paved routes and enjoy riding by Bois D’Arc Lake, a new county attraction. Riders that prefer gravel now have 3 routes to choose: a 25-mile, 45 mile and a 70-mile option. Residents and visitors will also be able to enjoy a full day of festival activities around the Fannin County Courthouse Square which will be full of vendors, games for kids of all ages, entertainment & live music on the stage beginning at 8:30am and running until 4:00pm.
Rest Stop sponsors will be asked to decorate their assigned stops with a theme this year to make the event a bit more fun for the riders, some who travel hundreds of miles to participate in one of Texas’s oldest bike rides, established in 1982.

Directions: From Bailey go .5 miles on SH 78N; then go east for 1.4 miles on FM 1552.
Marker Text: The earliest known settler in the Portland community was Jesse Green London (1843-1875), a native of Missouri and a Confederate veteran who brought his family here in 1873. Other early settlers included members of the Tefteller, Cline, Bell, Henderson, Goin, and Biggerstaff families.
The small farming community boasted several business establishments, including a blacksmith shop and a wood shop by the late 1880s. The six-grade Portland School opened in 1879 and met in a one-room log building until the school district was consolidated with two other area schools in 1898. The grocery store served as a residence and post office as well. Founded at the end of the 19th century, the Portland Congregational Methodist Church worshiped in the old log schoolhouse until 1909 when a sanctuary was built at this site.
The opportunity for Portland to grow and prosper was denied when the rail line was laid south of the settlement. Although a few homes and this church building are all that remain of the community, the settlers left a rich heritage for their descendants, many of whom still live in the area.

Fannin County Drug Court Program selected to host foundational workshop from national organization All Rise
Press Release - After a competitive application pro-
cess, the Fannin County Drug Court was selected to host a foundational workshop with All Rise, the leading national training, membership, and advocacy organization for evidence-based justice system innovation. Foundational workshops provide the building blocks for successful treatment courts, from inception to innovation and expansion.
The foundational workshop led by All Rise was engaging, interactive and essential for long-term success. All Rise’s cadre of nationally renowned treatment court experts and practitioners help participating teams implement evidence-based practices, develop operations manuals, and build team unity to ensure positive outcomes in our communities.
“This foundational workshop provides the blueprint for sustaining successful treatment courts that save lives, reunite families, and make the community safer,” said All Rise Chief of Training and Research Carolyn Hardin. “All Rise is thrilled to work with such dedicated public health and public safety leaders.”
Those attending the training included Judge Lauri Blake, Judge-Elect Christina Tillett, Criminal District AttorneyElect John Skotnik, Corey Baker, Director of Fannin County Community Supervision and Corrections Depart-
ment (“CSCD”), Matt Cook, Substance Use Disorder Director of Lakes Regional Community Center, Bonham Police Department Captain Terry Eddington, Quiency Brannan - Criminal Defense Attorney, and Patti AndrewsCSCD Officer. The workshop covered three days from June 25-26, 2024.
“Fannin County has had a Drug Court for two decades and this workshop taught us new information and evidence-based practices to improve and expand our program”, stated Judge Blake.
“Our goal is to apply the model correctly and improve outcomes for our community to ensure sobriety, with safety as our top priority.”
Treatment courts are the single most successful intervention in our nation’s history for leading people with substance use and mental health disorders out of the justice system and into lives of recovery, stability, and health. Ongoing training is necessary to improve program outcomes, implement evidence-based best practices, better serve individuals in our community, and use funds in a responsible, effective manner.
“The success I’ve seen in recovery from substance abuse and addiction issues through participation in the Drug Court program is encouraging for those of us who work in the industry. Specialty Courts are a game changer. Lives are
changed for the better,” remarked Director Corey Baker. “In 2023, the State success rate for drug courts across the state was 75.45%. The Fannin County Drug Court Program for the same period of time was 81.82%. We give a lot of attention to our program participants and we know our people. I attribute our higher success rate to these factors.”
Director Matt Cook added, “Treatment can be more successful when partnering with the justice system because the participants have more accountability. Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life and strive to reach their full potential. This not only benefits the individual, but also the community as a whole.”
Most encouraging was the participation of Judge-Elect Christina Tillett and Criminal District Attorney – Elect John Skotnik. “These two community leaders took the time to fully participate in the 3 day workshop and have embraced the drug court model. This was their personal time. I’m very impressed with their commitment to continue the Fannin County Drug Court Program beginning January 1, 2025,” said Judge Blake. There are more than 4,000 treatment courts in the United States, annually serving more than 150,000 people. Learn more at AllRise.org.

Local Republican Attended RNC” in Milwaukee
Press Release - Colonel (ret) Walter Goodwater represented Fannin County in Milwaukee Wisconsin as one of 6 delegate / alternates representing the Republican Party in Congressional District 4. Goodwater had been elected during the caucus meeting at the Texas State Convention in May to represent the district which is comprised of 9 counties represented by Congressman Pat Fallon. This was the second time Fannin County had someone elected to represent the Texas delegation during a National Convention. The Texas delegation
comprised of 302 men and women were easy to recognize with their cowboy hats and Texas shirts. It was noted much to the appreciation of many of the delegates during the first group meeting that they would be instructed in “hat” etiquette for the men and the women. As the speaker shared,” times may have changed but not the respect and rules which go with wearing your hat.” The world press took notice of Texas during this time with delegates being interviewed on multiple topics during the week. Goodwater reported giving interviews to 6
different radio, TV and print sources including speaking to reporters from, Slovakia, Sweden, Australia and South Korea.
“Attending the RNC was a definite highlight for me personally and it was an incredible honor to have been elected to serve as one of the three delegates from our district. I was so proud to have the opportunity to represent our Fannin County Republicans.” said Walter Goodwater.
Under the Texas banner Walter was on the Delegate floor each evening as the endorsement speeches were presented. It was “very clear to all that God was first on that convention floor”. Thursday when the Republican nominee, Donald Trump officially accepted the nomination we delegates were very focused on his harrowing account of the recent assassination attempt. His ninety-three-minute speech went by without notice to its length and was the “most presidential I have ever heard him give,” said Walter. Following that announcement, Walter had the opportunity to be under the massive drop of balloons. It was obvious during the RNC that the Texas delegation was unified as a group and the delegation went to Milwaukee to do a job and they did it.
20. Approve Change of Zoning application: Property ID# 81843 on CR 2955 in Honey Grove, TX, from A&R, Agricultural and Ranching District to RE, Rural Estate Single-Family District – Development Services Director: Judge Cunningham noted he would also read items 20 thru 25 consecutively for there to be one motion for all of them. Changes abound for Fannin Co. teams as '24 high school v'ball season starts
Change will be the key word, as the 2024 high school volleyball season begins with practices for Fannin County's seven varsity programs on Monday, Aug. 5.
One school will change classifications this season.
All but three schools will have different head coaches.
Only three schools will begin this season assured of reaching the postseason.
Where four teams qualify from a district -- Class 2A6A -- the two largest and two smallest qualifiers will now go into separate postseason brackets.
At Bonham, Emily Vanderburg will return for her third season at the helm of the Lady Warriors who will resume being a 4A program after a sixseason stay in 3A. Their new district will be 14-4A and include these opponents: Paris, North Lamar, Pittsburg, Sulphur Springs, Texarkana Pleasant Grove.
Vanderburg will look to get Bonham back into the postseason for the first time since its Region II-3A quarterfinals run in 2019.
The Lady Warriors barely missed making the playoffs in 2023 -- finishing only one game out of the fourth-andfinal postseason berth at 4-8 in 11-3A, which was headed by 3A State runner-up and undefeated defending district champion Gunter. Bonham went 3-3 during the second half of district play, including a 3-2 win over fourth-place qualifier Blue Ridge. Conversely, 3A Leonard will have its fourth different head coach in as many seasons.
Dodd City alumna Lindsay Carter Giles has left her alma mater to head the volleyball and girls' basketball programs at Leonard. Giles had the Lady
Hornets in the volleyball postseason each of her three seasons at Dodd City -- including reaching the Region III-1A quarterfinals the last two seasons.
S&S Consolidated will replace Bonham for Leonard as a district opponent in 11-3A volleyball which otherwise will again include: Bells, Blue Ridge, Gunter, Howe and Pottsboro.
Leonard will vie for its first postseason since five-straight advances under Lisa Davis from 2015-19.
Davis coached a couple more years at Leonard and the last two at neighboring 2A Trenton before retiring this spring, leaving the latter helm vacant.
Cody Garewal has been hired to head Trenton, Kendyl Waller promoted to lead Sam Rayburn and the schools will not, unlike
the last two seasons, be assured from the start of ending the year in the postseason. Both have been moved via the University Interscholastic League's biennial realignment in February from a four-team district into the six-team 10-2A with Collinsville, Tioga, Tom Bean and Whitewright.
Last season, Sam Rayburn finished a program-best third place in district play at 4-5 in 11-2A and made a second-consecutive and overall bi-district appearance.
Trenton, also with a bi-district appearance, completed its eighth volleyball postseason in the last nine years after finishing fourth in 11-2A at 3-6. Meanwhile, in 1A, Russell
SR promotes assistant Waller to lead v'ball program in 2024
By Rich Hilliard
IVANHOE -- Having a sixth different head volleyball coach in as many seasons could have been an extra obstacle in 2024 for Class 2A Sam Rayburn.
Kendyl Waller's promotion this offseason assures a smoother transition for the Lady Rebels, coming off their second overall bi-district trip and in as many seasons after a program-best third place effort in district play at 4-5.
"I am excited to take over
the Sam Rayburn volleyball program because of the athletes," said Waller. "The returning athletes are dedicated to this growing program and are ready to work hard this upcoming season.
"There will be new challenges this season with losing three seniors and having a new district," she said, "but I have already seen the girls step up this summer."
Waller, who fills the position held last season by Amanda Moore Cullins, takes over the
Lady Rebels as Sam Rayburn moves from a four-team district -- where a postseason trip was assured the previous two seasons -- into the sixteam 10-2A with Collinsville, Tioga, Tom Bean, Trenton and Whitewright.
"With not having postseason promised we will have to be mentally prepared all season to think of where we are at to compete in district," said Waller. "When district starts on Sept. 24 we will be working on where we will be finishing
FANNIN BANK
Clapp will return for his third season at Savoy, Dene' Adams is back for her second at Ector and Dodd City and Fannindel will each have a new head coach.
Landon Dyer will now be the head coach for the Lady Hornets volleyball and girls' basketball teams. He will be assisted by Rodney Durham who will also be head track coach.
All but Fannindel will stay together for district play, changing from 19-1A to 21-1A and again be assured of postseason trips. The top three per 1A district advance to the playoffs.
During the 2023 playoffs, undefeated district champion Dodd City (30-11) reached its third volleyball regional quarterfinal in the last four years to complete its 29th postseason in the last 34 years. Savoy, the
in the district to not just make it to postseason but where we will be placed to set ourselves up in a good position for a postseason run."
Waller served as Sam Rayburn's volleyball assistant during its 2023 bi-district trip. She did likewise in 2022, as 1A Ector started its volleyball program also with a bidistrict appearance.
"The past two years have shown me the importance about consistency and clarity with a young program but also with an experienced program with my first two years of coaching," said Waller. "Young programs are special because they are ready to learn every aspect of the game and are willing to stretch their comfort zones to see what is possible."

The Cardinals, who finished 3-7 overall and 1-2 in district play in 2023, will start their regular season on Aug. 30 at Forestburg. district runner-up, reached the area round for the first time since 2019 after garnering its first bi-district win since 2017. Ector, the third-place qualifier, also made its second-straight bi-district advance.
As of July 17, Fannindel remained in search of a new head volleyball coach, as alumna Charletha Wilburn has taken a job at another school district. Wilburn guided the Lady Falcons during the first two seasons of the school's resumption of the sport -- possibly playing it for the first time since the late 1970s.
Fannindel will only field a junior high team in 2024, after having varsity squads and playing abbreviated schedules sans district play the last two seasons.
District 10-1A-I play will follow: Oct. 10 vs. Saint Jo, Oct. 18 at Leverett’s Chapel, Oct. 24 vs. Campbell, Nov. 1 at Union Hill. Dave Campbell’s Texas Foot-

championship favorite, and Saint Jo, No. 11 and 16 ranked, respectively, in its 1A-I poll.

Fannin County Biblical Round Table
The Fannin County Biblical Round Table is Set. Mark your calendar for Tuesday August, 6th at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex, at 7:00 pm
We will be in the book of John, the only book in the Bible written specifically to unbelievers. The narrative of this roundtable meeting will focus on what it means to believe in Jesus. We will discuss the “never passages” in the book John, and the dialog between Jesus and Martha in chapter 11:23-27. We will make plenty of time for questions after the initial presentations. Cold water will be provided and be sure and bring a friend.
We still need another panel participant. Give me a call if you have any suggestions to help make the round table the best it can be. Joe Moore 903 815 8136 Jpmoorejpm@gmail.com
Fight Or Flight? Where Should We Run?
913 S. 5th Street, Bonham, (903) 583-3910
A devotional from “Morning and Evening” by C.H. Spurgeon (which I very highly recommend) was about Joseph’s moment of fleeing from Potiphar’s wife as she attempted to seduce him. I was reminded that we all have a “fight or flight” tendency within us. Spurgeon points out that at the moment of temptation, our
victory is in the flight mode! 2 Timothy 2:22 tells us to flee the evil desires of you and pursue righteousness.”Where should we run? Proverbs 18:10 tell us that “the Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
In this Spurgeon reading, he also refers to Potiphar’s wife as “Madam Bubble.” This is a character in the book, “The Pilgrim’s Progress.” She is a personification of all that is alluring in this world that is so
empty and bursts like a soap bubble.
As we worship together, we find life’s truest substance in our relationship with Almighty God through Jesus Christ. Today, we flee from this world that is so empty and temporal and enter the beauty of His Holiness and find forever satisfaction and fulfillment.

Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Faith Controls the Tongue”
Hello everyone!
This week I am focusing on James 3:1-12. When I read this passage, I couldn’t help but remember an old expression that when I was growing up, a lot of kids would use. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” How many of you remember that, or have ever used that saying yourselves? The truth of the matter is that sometimes words can hurt us. In this passage, James reminds us that the tongue is a small member of the body, but it is very powerful. What we say and do proves what we truly believe. Those who trust in God, and really believe Him, begin to be changed in what they say and do. Still, we all stumble. Romans 3:23 reminds us, “For all have
sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” The tongue is untamable, and capable of great destruction. Blessing God and cursing people should never come out of the same mouth. In verse 6, James refers to the tongue as a fire, and a world of iniquity. We all need to be changed. It should never be that we praise God and curse the people who are made in His image. Yet, as sinners, that’s exactly what we tend to do. We must remember that our words are extremely powerful. Our tongues are small, but they are capable of causing great damage to those around us.
In 1867, Horatius R. Palmer wrote a classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage.
“Angry words, O let them
never From the tongue unbridled slip; May the heart’s best impulse ever Check them ere that soil the lip. Love is much too pure and holy, Friendship is too sacred far, For a moment’s reckless folly Thus to desolate and mar.”“Love one another,” thus saith the Savior, Children obey the Father’s blest command.
“Love one another,” thus saith the Savior, Children obey the blest command.”
If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit us and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

How Important Is The Church?
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Do we want the church to grow? What are we willing to do to see the church grow?
Are we willing to attend all the worship services of the Lord? We have all heard members of the church ask, “Is it necessary to attend every worship hour?” or “Do I have to attend all the Sunday night and Wednesday nights too?” I believe the real question being asked is, “Is the church that important?” Consider the following facts:
The importance of the church is clearly seen in the time and effort that has gone into the planning and building of the church. Jehovah has been thinking of, planning for, and working on the church longer than man has been in existence. The kingdom/church was in the mind of God from the foundation of the world (Matt. 25:34).
The importance of the church
is evident in the life given. Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica (1 Thes. 1:1) and let the Christians know that God had not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ who died for us (I Thessalonians 5:9-10). Paul sent the message to the church in Corinth (1 Cor. 1:2) that “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures (1 Cor. 15:3).
The importance of the church is shown at the cross. What was Jesus doing when he looked on the crowd that cried “Crucify him, Crucify him!” (Mark 15:12-14)? He was ready to die for the church (John 10:17-18). What was he doing when he was being spat upon (Matt 27:30)? What was he thinking when a crown of thorns was shoved on his head (Mark 15:17)? What was going through the Lord’s mind when nails were being driven into his hands and feet? What was Christ considering when he hung between heaven and
Leonard First Assembly of God, 108 Pecan Leonard, Texas 469-450-9777
earth and His blood flowed freely? He was purchasing the church with that blood (Acts 20:28)!
It is important not to forsake the assembly (Heb 10:25). When we do, we are telling the world and our Lord that the sacrifice for the church is NOT important (Heb 10:2630). Can we truly believe ourselves to be Christians, like Christ, and find no time for the church?
The church is so important to God that it is where he places the saved. When a person hears the gospel (Rom 10:1314), believes (John 8:24), confesses (Rom 10:9-10), repents (Acts 17:30-31), and is baptized (1 Pet 3:21), their sins are washed away (Acts 22:16), and the Lord adds that person to the church (Acts 2:47).
The church is designed for the saved and the saved are designed for the church. Now consider the question again: How important is the church?

DONALD “REAGAN” FLETCHER
Donald “Reagan” Fletcher passed away after a brief illness on July 22, 2024 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home, Bonham, TX.
Reagan was born on September 10, 1950 in Beaumont, Texas to Don and Betty Fletcher. He was the first of five children. Reagan spent his early years in South Texas and in 1965 moved to Pampa, Texas. As a young boy, he was introduced to the theater by his aunt Ann and Uncle Eddie. He graduated from Pampa High School in 1968 and went to Lubbock Christian University that fall after failing the physical for the draft for being soooooo cute. After graduation, he taught at Amarillo Christian Schools and Beaumont ISD and then returned to Lubbock to get his masters degree at Texas Tech. Around the same time he was the director of the Lubbock Christian Alumni Association. His special nickname from his time at LCU was “Skipper” by his fellow Sub T brothers. In 1984 he moved to New York City to pursue his PhD at New York University. He happened upon a job at the Shubert Organization that he loved very much and at which he stayed for many years. Reagan had so many adventures in NYC, we can’t begin to recount them. He was Old King Cole in the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade where he met many celebrities, and threw confetti from the skyscrapers on New Years Eve. He was especially proud of making his Texas pralines for the likes of Dixie Carter, Maggie Smith, and Tony Randall. Upon retirement in 2013, he moved to Dodd City, Texas. His family was from there, and he had been in Fannin County every year of his life and loved it there.
Although he loved the hustle of and bustle of New York City, he loved the quiet country life even more. Not one to stay home, Reagan quickly became involved in several organizations. He was a volunteer at the Fannin County Museum of History, helped with Meals on Wheels, and was the current president of the Bonham City Library Board. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Bonham, where he loved the worship and activities of the church. Reagan volunteered to help with the “blessings box”, served on several committees but most of all he loved the kirken of the tartans. Although Reagan never married or had children, he loved his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed doting on them with Easter baskets and Christmas presents. To his great nieces he was known as UNCLE POOPSIE!
Reagan is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Niki Magdelinic, his beloved grandmother, Roxie Esma McGrew, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Deborah Stout (Don) of Honey Grove, TX, brother, Alan Fletcher (Parla) of Dodd City, TX, brother, Jeff Fletcher (Karen) of Lubbock, TX, his favorite aunt, Ann Richardson from Houston, multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and of course, his beloved cat Cunningham. Let us not forget the hundreds of amazing friends that he made from all around the world.

Fishin’
or Hunting!
Week of July 24, 2024
Bois d’Arc stained; 85 degrees; 0.47 feet below pool. Bass fishing has been steady with the best bite on offshore points and brush piles or man made structures. Carolina rigs and Texas rigs are good with big worms and creature baits in 10-16 feet of water. Texas rigs with creature baits good on standing timber and bushes in 6-12 feet. Shaded trees or bushes best. Spinnerbaits and chatterbait bite slowed down a bit with this heat. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 83 degrees: 2.00 feet below pool. Catfish are excellent in a post-spawn phase hanging out in 2-13 feet of water on timber. Hybrids and sand bass are good schooling on main lake humps and points, and in the river feeding under balls of shad. Fish can be caught on spoons or slabs. Crappie are good on main lake brush piles, or in 4-18 feet of water on timber. Fish are not schooled up, so hit several trees for a mess of crappie. Minnows are out fishing jigs. Report by River Bottom Boys.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 81 degrees; 0.11 feet below pool. Bass are slow while the moon is fuller, and fish are more active at night. Early morning has been good for about an hour or so on frogs and flukes around grass in 2-4 feet. Switching to an offshore bite the rest of the day with Carolina rigs and Texas Rigs on points and humps in 15-20 feet with big worms or KO sticks. Deep crankbaits are good over drop offs in 22-27 feet. XD 6 and XD 8 chartreuse and blue back and landing bites. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 80 degrees; 1.11 feet above pool. Crappie are great on brush piles in 15 feet of water and submerged timber or hard structure in 9-22 feet of water. Crappie are biting 1/32-1/8 ounce jigs or minnows. Black bass are in 3-20 feet of water with white and chartreuse spinnerbaits early in the morning.
Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 83 degrees; 2.00 feet above pool. White bass are schooling up on top early mornings late evenings. Evenings have still been a little more consistent. Crappie are decent in 15-30 feet brush piles and bridge pillars on minnows and small jigs. Channel catfish bite is great on punch bait 10-20 feet of water. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 86 degrees; 0.10 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish good as we make our way through the peak of summer. Water temperatures are staying steady at 86 degrees. The hybrid striper and white bass bite is good. A lot of fish are being caught on the surface early in the morning as they feed on schools of threadfin shad, so slabs and swimbaits are working best in these situations. We are also catching these fish vertically on humps and ledges using the same artificial lures. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 1.76 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is good fishing live bait along ledges and flats in 25-50 feet of water watching for schooling fish and birds working. Swimbaits and slabs are working along the banks early in the morning as well. Crappie are slow on jigs and minnows fishing brush piles in 15-25 feet of water. Fish are roaming near creeks and coves chasing small shad. Bass are slow on topwaters early along the bluffs and soft plastics in the backs of the coves midday. Fish off the banks in 10-15 feet of water midday using electronics to
