The Man Behind the Pens – It’s a Bois d’Arc Thing Story & photos by Rose Schwartz During the month of June’s Bonham City Council Meeting, a familiar figure came forward to present each member

of the council, a custom Bois d’Arc wood writing pen he had created. He was familiar to me because this was not the first time I had witnessed David Keene presenting one of these unique writing utensils to a

local dignitary. However, at this meeting, he also presented a copy of “Wood Eternal The Story of Osage Orange, Bois d’Arc, Etc.” by Fred Tarpley along with his pens and my curiosity was

piqued. Obtaining the green light from my editor, I sched-

YOU’LL LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR!

Dr. Hagen helps people see; now he wants to help you hear again Dr. Hagen is a 57-year-old optometrist who understands the value of seeing – and hearing – well. Even though he promised himself he wouldn’t be that guy who refused to get hearing help, he admitted that he waited too long to address his hearing difficulties. “My new rallying cry is to go in and have your hearing assessed!” Dr. Hagen said. “I want everybody to experience the same success that I have. Now that I see it from the patient side, it’s very powerful.” Once Dr. Hagen was fitted with his customized hearing aids, he said he could hear great, they fit beautifully, and the sound quality was apparent from day one. Dr. Hagen spoke enthusiastically about the technology: “Mostly I live in the PureSound setting. It makes everything feel like natural sound, sort of what I expect my hearing was like 20 years ago.” About the difference hearing well has made in his life, Dr. Hagen said, “I love to hear! I feel like I get to participate in my world more fully than I was used to for quite some time.”

It’s worth your time. It’s about your life.

nin County became very apparent as one of the first things he wanted to get clear when I had mentioned having read “Wood Eternal” was that though it was a good book, Mr. Tarpley erred in naming Commerce as the Bois d’Arc Capital of Texas as it is not in Fannin County. He then proceeded to detail how though he had not been born in Fannin County, with his dad having grown up in Fannin County, he spent his summers here as a child. He noted how his mom and dad retired in Fannin County in 1975 (his mother moved away after his father’s death in 1986) and how he and his wife moved here in 1996 after his retirement in 1994 as an engineer with Alcoa in Pittsburgh, Pa. Add to Mr. Keene’s story, a great great grandfather settling in Fannin County in 1852, and some might say his draw to this part of Texas was just natural. When asked how he came about making his pens, he explained how there are these bois d’arc trees on his property he had cut into lumber and when told by his sister-in-law about a neighbor of hers who did woodwork, he gave her a 2x4 of bois d’arc wood for her to give to him. Upon her next visit, she brought back a beautifully crafted pen from the piece of wood he had given her. He liked it so much, he took it to a meeting and promptly lost it. He said he tried finding someone to make another to replace the pen he’d lost and when he could not find anyone to do so, he converted a metal lathe to make a pen similar to the one he’d lost, and he was hooked. Since then, he has been making pens as a hobby and about fifteen years ago he decided to give pens to the County Commissioners and the members of the Bonham City Council in appreciation of their civil service. Others he has given his pens to include 336th District Judge Laurine Blake (she is a great fan of his pens) Senator Cruz, Senator Cornyn, Representative Smith, Representative Fallon and members of different civic organizations. He showed me two similar pens that differed in color as one was lighter wood than the other and explained how the pen changes color as it ages. And though he gives his pens as a gesture of appreciation for those who serve the greater good, I learned a huge part of his gifting of pens is “so everybody in Fannin County have at least some contact with bois d’arc; see it, touch it, hear of it.” Mr. Keene is a great fan of the bois d’arc tree. 200 W. 5th Street in Bonham. In support of the Arts, Mr. Keene has made available in their gift shop, his custom wood pens for $20.00 that includes free engraving! (I won’t have to run for public office to obtain one after all!) Before meeting with Mr. Keene, I had skimmed through “Wood Eternal” to see if I could gain some insight for this narrative and must say, it is wayyy more interesting than I initially thought a book about a tree would be. And, at the conclusion of our visit,

I found myself agreeing with Mr. Keene that the City of Bonham should challenge the City of Commerce for the title of “The Bois d’Arc Capital of Texas” and someday sponsor our own Bois d’Arc festival. After all Bonham once was called Bois d’Arc (information you can find in “Wood Eternal”,) Fannin County has more Bois d’Arc trees (per Mr. Keene), we have the new Bois d’Arc Lake and Fannin County is home, to David Keene.

From My Life to Yours:

The Living God – Our Hope

By Bro. Bill Beasley

In Memorium Original Publish Date: August 5, 2014

Matthew 11:28 In the midst of the unrest in our world today God speaks to His people through His word. Last week I mentioned several Bible passages that are in themselves sources of hope for the believer. The key to the hope God makes available to us lies in the relationship that we can have in Him. It must be personal. There are two facets of hope that we desire. One is that we can have peace in our world. The

other is that we can have peace in our heart. We want to be able to face the future unafraid. How can we realize this hope? This brings me to the thought for this week. Ours is a living God. The hope He makes available is a living hope. The creation story in Genesis presents Him as designer, planner, maker and sustainer of our world. From the Book of Revelation we see Him as the Alpha and the Omega. In the beginning “God.” In the end time “God.” From the beginning He had the whole world in His hands. In the ending He is still in control. We can trust Him and not be afraid. I find comfort, peace, and hope by trusting Him who is the All-knowing, All present, and All powerful God. Not only does He know our names, but He knows our needs as well. Not only is He available, but He is also approachable. Not only is He adequate

for all times, but He is also anxious to help us. We are not surprised to hear Him saying “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.“ Matthew 11:28. Now back to our question of last week. “Is there any hope?” Yes, by recognizing Him as the one to whom we can talk, the one with whom we can walk, and the one who lives within us we have refuge and strength = a present helper awaiting our calling. May God supply your needs today is my prayer – claim the promises of Matthew 11:28 and Philippians 4:19. You will find them helpful!

Fannin County Commissioners Court – 2/4/20 Crossword Puzzle Sponsored By: 02-07-17 Lake6/15/21 Ralph Hall Update Presentation JE Legacy Management By Rose Schwartz Meeting of the Fannin County for Scott Ridling, Fire Chief: Tuesday, July 26, 2022, Fannin County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 8:40 a.m. a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present. 2. Hold and attend a PUBLIC HEARING to hear comments regarding partial closure of CR 2215 in Precinct 1; beginning at CR 2210 and extending south to the curve, a closure of approximately .3 miles (about 1,690 feet): After reading the explanation of this matter, Judge Moore asked if there was anyone wishing to speak. The first to speak, a Fannin County citizen, told how the closure of this road would create difficulties for getting children residing on CR 2215 to school as this road is used for school transportation. A citizen residing on CR 2215 spoke to note drainage difficulties that would be caused by closure of this road. Another citizen residing on CR 2215 spoke to dispute the two previous statements about hindering school bus transportation and there being drainage difficulties resulting from its closing. A fourth Fannin County citizen residing in that area supported the claim that difficulties would be created and detailed how it would cause difficulties for her family’s travels. 3. Adjourn: After thanking the citizens for their input, Judge Moore called for an adjournment. A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 8:47 a.m. On the same day at 8:50 a.m., Judge Moore called to order another Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court and noted Quorum was established. 2. Hold and attend a PUBLIC HEARING to hear comments regarding closure of CR 3820 in Leonard: After reading the reason for holding this hearing, Judge Moore asked if any had anything to say about the proposed road closure. No one came forward. 3. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 8:54 a.m. On the same day at 9:00 a.m., County Judge Randy Moore called to order the Regular

Commissioners Court and restated that Quorum was established. Then, Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson introduced Pastor Jase Waller of the Telephone Baptist Church to lead the Invocation. Afterwards, Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow introduced his two Cub Scout sons Thatcher and Henson to lead the Pledges. 4. Introductions: Judge Moore introduced and welcomed District 336th Judge Laurine Blake. He also welcomed a Lake Ralph Hall group that would be making a presentation later in the meeting. 5. Public Forum: Judge Blake thanked the Court for their leadership and encouraged the citizenry of Fannin County to step up, when possible, to help shoulder the county’s responsibilities. She commented on the challenges of shortages with personnel and noted that she wanted to present to the junior member of the Commissioners Court, a piece of equipment to serve as a token reminder of the appreciation that many in the community feel but don’t often express. When she completed speaking, Judge Blake presented Commissioner Lane with a red steel road grader toy. 6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding extending the Burn Ban for Fannin County – County Judge: Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson spoke to explain how the heat index has risen to the point that equipment used in dry areas can spark a fire. A discussion ensued about the seriousness of the weather conditions with the Balch Springs fire brought up as an example of the danger existing. Judge Moore urged caution in the use of equipment during this dry period. Commissioner Lackey made the motion to EXTEND THE BURN BAN FOR 30 DAYS. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion after noting that if weather conditions improve during the coming weeks, the matter of removing the ban can be visited. The motion to extend the Burn Ban for 30 days passed. 7. Discussion regarding EMS monthly report for June 2022 – County Judge

Bonham Fire Chief Scott Ridling began his report noting they are averaging 12.2 calls per day. He stated there had been some personnel out with Covid, but coverage has not been reduced. He noted an accounting error on last month’s report involving salaries that was corrected on this month’s report. At the conclusion of his report, he voiced his appreciation for the extension of the Burn Ban. 8. Presentation by Daniel Harrison of Freese and Nichols, Inc. regarding Lake Ralph Hall project status – Commissioner Precinct 3: AICP Project Manager with Freese and Nichols, Daniel Harrison, gave a slide presentation detailing project updates to show where they are with the Lake Ralph Hall Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Regulations. After introducing Urban Planner with Freese and Nichols, Connor Roberts and Manager of Property Services with Upper Trinity Regional Water District, Doug Janeway, he proceeded to note upcoming schedule dates with the first being August 9, 2022 when a completed draft of the plan will be made available on their website 2 weeks before the next Open House which will occur August 25th to give citizens ample time to view before the Open House where they will be encouraged to ask questions and make their views known. He went over the history of how the project has progressed, aspects of the plan and the upcoming zoning regulations in relation to the land use categories. He covered previous events where the concerns and requests of the stakeholders were considered which helped bring the plan to where it is today. Questions were asked which required input from Mr. Janeway such as: how much land does Upper Trinity actually own at the lake and if there is collaboration ongoing between Upper Trinity and the city of Ladonia for the city to annex the land at Lake Ralph Hall at a future date? the property owners to allow this action to be approved. Commissioner Self made the motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed. 11. Discussion, consideration and action to approve a one-time severance of 3 acres from a 31.358-acre tract on CR 4640 in Trenton, Property ID# 100316 – Commissioner Precinct 2 for Development Services Director: Di Hopkins once again noted there was nothing to stand in the way of this being approved. Commissioner Self made the motion to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed. 12. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Final Plat for Orduna 2, Phase 1; 21 lots on 28.81 acres on CR 4875 in Leonard, Property ID#s 80330 and 80340 – Commissioner Precinct 2 for Development Services Director: Di Hopkins made note that the road would be a private road for this and that an inspection was done July 14th. Everything else needing done to clear the way for approval of this had been completed. Commissioner Self made the motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed. 13. Discussion, consideration and action regarding partial closure of CR 2215 in Precinct 1; beginning at CR 2210 and extending south to the curve, a closure of approximately .3 miles (about 1,690 feet) – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner Lane noted that with the three citizens speaking against this closure and a petition with at least twenty signatures being given to the court requesting this closure not be allowed, she would have to recommend the closure of the road not be granted. She then made the motion to leave CR 2215 open as it is. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed unanimously. A short

time after the motion passed, Judge Moore stated he wanted the citizenry to know that their voice counts. 14. Discussion, consideration and action regarding closure of CR 3820 in Leonard – Commissioner Precinct 2: Commissioner Self spoke on how this situation differs from the previous closure request and with not having anyone protest it, he recommended the closure be allowed. He then made the motion to approve closing CR 3820 in Leonard. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 15. Discussion, consideration and action to begin performing criminal history and driver’s license checks for job applicants – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner Lane noted how in the application for employment given to job applicants, it is noted in the application that there may be a background/license check but how that is not being done by the county. She shared that in speaking with other counties who are currently performing these searches, the importance of implementing these checks have been stressed. Discussion ensued that included comments from Fannin County DA Richard Glaser who was in favor of this process. A consensus was reached that running background/license checks for potential county employees, would be wise and it was noted that the decision to hire applicants (even those with prior convictions) was up to each department head. Commissioner Lane then made the motion to approve performing criminal history/driver’s license checks on job applicants. Commissioner Self seconded the motion which passed unanimously. She explained how this situation was caused by recent “unfunded mandates”, and how she was actually asking for $20,000.00 to be moved out of the contingency account to cover these additional charges. After some discussion ensued about unfunded mandates, Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the moving of $20,000.00 out of contingency to cover the overages. Sunday Morning Re-take Hello everyone! We had another wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning! The Bible tells us in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” We

all have situations and trials in this life that we face each and every day. We need to be reminded that our help comes from the Lord. An old saying came to my mind as I was thinking of what to write to you this week. I have referenced this quite a bit, and I’m sure you’ve heard it many times. “Let go and let

God.” Whenever we face these situations, the best that that we can do is to turn it over to Him. That being said, I would like to share something I experienced back when I went to youth camp in the summer of 2001. On the last night, following the evening service, we all went outside and were each given a stick. This stick was to be symbolic of a burden or worry that we had in our lives, that needed to be turned over to Him. When we made the commitment to do so, we were asked to throw our sticks into the campfire. As the Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7, we are to cast our cares on Him, because He cares for us. This week’s hymn was written by Robert Robinson in 1758. “Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount I’m

fixed upon it mount of God’s redeeming love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’ve come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, bought me with his precious blood. Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above.” If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church! The Promise Of Heaven

By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)

7/26/22

Heaven is promised to humanity under conditions that God has set forth in his inspired word, the Bible. ‘Heaven’ is equated with eternity, salvation, and forever. Jesus, “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9). Heaven, salvation is promised to the obedient, through Jesus. The Lord told Thomas, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Paul wrote to Titus about the promise of eternal life by saying “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” (Titus 1:2). This prize of heaven does not rust, nor corrupt, nor fade or lose its glory. Peter writes about the “inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4). Paul uses the example of an athlete, by saying that “every man that striveth

for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible” (1 Corinthians 9:15). Peter writes that to the Christian “an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:11). Jesus asks, “For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?” (Luke 10:25). Paul warns that “they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition” (1 Timothy 6:9). Jesus warns “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26). Sadly many are losing for eternity, not even for the whole world, but for a weekly paycheck for a few years, a house with a fifty year shelflife, or a shiny new toy with a twenty year or less shelf-life. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT FOREVER.

Fish Fry Fundraiser • Honey Grove Elementary Cafeteria, Aug. 6 • 4pm (see pg 10) being that this action is not needed to go through the court, this item was passed on. 17. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Fannin County Lease with American Tower – County Judge for County Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Shonda Magness noted that the requests the

court had wanted submitted to American Tower was approved though she had not yet received the modified contract. Ms. Magness noted that per the representative of American Tower, Lisa Olestrom, it would be a 10% rent increase each year; the lease extension would be for ten years; and there would be a $10,000.00 signing bonus. She further explained that

the contract would expire in October of 2022 but as of then the county would have $14,692 from the lease on this at that time. After explaining the details of the contract, Ms. Magness recommended the court approve the agreement. Judge Moore confirmed with Shonda that American Tower had verbally agreed to this contract. After some discussion Commissioner

Magness made the motion to approve with the provision that the contract contain the exact terms as stated by Shonda. Commissioner Lane seconded the motion and the motion passed. 18. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve payment of bills. 19. EXECUTIVE SESSION: Personnel Matters – a closed meeting will be held pursuant to §551.074 of the Government Code for (1) deliberation of personnel matters regarding the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline, or dismissal of public officer or employee; or (2) to hear a complaint or charge against an officer or employee – regarding county positions and salaries – County Judge: A motion was made, seconded and passed to enter into Executive Session at 10:48 a.m. After some time had passed, a motion was made, seconded and passed to enter back into Regular Session at 11:34 a.m. 20. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Personnel Matters Executive Session – County Judge: Judge Moore noted this was about budget issues and no action would be taken. 21. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane began by thanking everyone who attended and then reminded all that we will be

in a burn ban for the next 30 days and asked everyone to be cautious before wishing everyone a wonderful week. Commissioner Self noted it was dry & hot and called attention to a fire that happened the day before in Leonard. He commended the work of the Fire Department for getting it out and congratulated Commissioner Lane on the toy road grader that was presented to her earlier by Judge Blake. He then thanked all for coming and wished everyone a good week. Commissioner Courtesy Magness Photo encouraged everyone to get out of the heat when possible and noted how after hearing about the fire in Balch Springs he stopped his crew from mowing on the side of the road to prevent such a fire being caused by mowing. He advised everyone to be cautious and stay cool. Commissioner Lackey stated how he and his crew did the same thing. He said they will resume their mowing once the county gets some rain, and the dangerous dry conditions subside. He noted that right now they will be working on road conditions and doing some work in the ditches. He too urged everyone to be careful and have a good week. Judge Moore announced that Commissioner Lane had been elected to be the chairperson of TCOG (Texoma Council of Governments) and commended her on the good job she is doing, presiding over that body. 22. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 11:39 a.m.

pand it to three days with additional classes and field trips. I definitely encourage others to use the space as well, including any of our local boards.” Fannin Bank has already done just that—hosting its board meeting at the facility in June. For more information on scheduling an event at the Bois d’Arc Lake Operations Center, located on FM 897, call 469-626-4760.

Courtesy Photos Press Release - The Bois d’Arc Lake Operations Center hosted its first facilitywide event for nearly 75 local teachers and educators in partnership with Dodd City ISD at the end of June 2022. The school’s Summer Professional Development Conference was held over two days, using all the center’s indoor and outdoor classrooms, lobby and board room. The building’s location by Bois d’Arc Lake offered teachers a chance to see progress on North Texas’ newest reservoir and provided a unique venue for their continuing education classes. North Texas Municipal Water District, which owns and operates the lake and center, encourages school groups

and other Fannin County organizations to learn more about holding educational events in the new space. “The facility offers an unusual setting with plenty of opportunity to explore… it has gorgeous scenery and facilities,” said Nathan Melson, high school STEM teacher and 6-12 Robotics Director/ Coach. Melson chaired the school’s professional development conference committee. As a local and former education representative of the lake’s watershed protection plan committee, he was familiar with the Lake Operations Center. “Someone mentioned how cool would it be to have the

school development conference down here,” he said. “Our faculty and administration agreed. I reached out to Jennifer Stanley, Bois d’Arc Lake Operations Center Manager, and she organized everything for us so we could hold the event three months later.” The conference featured non-traditional continuing education classes with speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department on water-related issues, the Texas Historical Commission about former U.S. House Speaker Sam Rayburn’s home and library (in the area) and a local Beekeeping Club covering beekeeping science and pollinators. At the board meeting, TJHS voted in favor of a $5,000 grant to begin restoration of the burial sites. This was the first in-person meeting of TJHS in two and a half years because of Covid. In addition, many members participated in the meeting by Zoom, marking the first suc-

cessful hybrid meeting of the society. Attendees in Bonham were treated to a tour of the Sam Rayburn Home and heard a lecture by Emma Trent, Coordinator of the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum. Malinda Allison of the Fannin County Museum spoke on Jewish businessmen and their families who lived in Bonham. Lou Ashmore talked about the history of the Jewish cemetery and plans for its long-term restoration.

Cooper GREAT. Water lightly stained; 88 degrees; 3 feet low. Fishing is best early and late in the day. Catfish are good off docks and shorelines with cut bait. Crappie are fair on main lake brush piles and standing timber with jigs and minnows. Bass are fair along grass ledges with Texas or Carolina rigged worms. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 82 degrees; 2.77 feet low. Crappie are good in 5-10 feet early mornings until 8 am. Moving to 9 -17 feet, with the magic number closer to 14 feet in timber and brush with minnows and jigs. White bass are good with a sporadic topwater bite throughout the day in the middle of the lake. Then in 15-25 feet of water on main lake points and humps. White or chartreuse slabs for deeper water and swimbaits in shallow water 3.5 inch. Black Bass are biting on white and chartreuse spinner baits early morning until 7:30 a.m. Then switch to divers, swim jigs, swimbaits, and Texas or Carolina rigs midday in 10-20 feet of water on main lake points, brush piles and shallow water timber with hard bottom such as sand. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 89 degrees; 3.12 feet low. Lake Tawakoni continues to warm up just like all of the Texas lakes this week. The white bass and hybrid bite has slowed some since last week but we are still catching some on artificial baits like slab spoons and swimbaits. The fish have been active in shallow water including long main lake points and big flat areas next to deep water. The catfish bite still proves to be the best bite on the lake. Blue and channel catfish are good on prepared baits such as punch baits are the ticket fished over baited holes in 25 feet of water. Crappie are still being caught on brush piles in 12-15 feet of water with minnows out fishing jigs. The largemouth bite has been very early at daylight and lasts about two hours. White frogs up in the grass are working at daylight, then switch over to shallow crankbaits or weightless flukes. Captain Michael Littlejohn, Lake Tawakoni Guide Service. Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 82 degrees; 0.28 feet above. Fishing patterns are holding steady in the summer heat. Hybrid bass are good with pencil popper topwaters early near the dam, moving midlake to deeper water with slabs midday. Larger fish will be deeper under the box fish.

Don’t Mess With Texas A Hunt County game warden was patrolling Cedar Creek by kayak when he discovered four large trash bags of household garbage floating in the creek. He took on the unpleasant task of tearing into the bags in an attempt to collect any evidence as to who threw the garbage over a nearby bridge. With evidence in hand, the warden paid a visit to a home less than a mile away and was able to get a full confession from an 18 year old living there. Snagged in the Act of Snagging Smith County game wardens were patrolling by truck around Lake Palestine when they observed a man in the water at

New Greater Roadrunner Conservation License Plate Available for Texas Drivers The public was invited to vote for their favorite design for the new roadrunner license plate last April and the winning design is on the new plate. The design shows the roadrunner in a proud, confident stance, a signature look for this Texas bird. Texas wildlife photographer Hector Astorga has generously donated the image appearing on the plate. In 2020, Hector was named one of the “We Will Not Be Tamed” ambassadors for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. “Wildlife photography opens people’s eyes to what we need to protect,” Astorga says. “That leads to conservation and preserving the habitat that these wild creatures need to survive.” Funding from sales of the roadrunner conservation

license plate will help support and expand programs such as the Great Texas Wildlife Trails, Texas Paddling Trails and Great Texas Birding Classic, making it easier to find great places for Texans to view wildlife and enjoy nature. The TPWD Conservation License Plate Program has raised $10.5 million in the last 22 years for wildlife and habitat conservation in Texas, according to program marketing lead, Janis Johnson. The 11 conservation plate designs include a horned lizard, largemouth bass, hummingbird, white-tailed deer, bluebonnet, desert bighorn sheep and others. These plates benefit Texas fisheries and rivers, state parks, big game research and management and non-game wildlife species management.

All TPWD conservation specialty plates cost $30 a year, with $22 supporting various programs and efforts. Plates can be purchased for vehicles, RVs/travel trailers, trailers and motorcycles. “The conservation license plate program creates license plates that people enjoy and want to buy while also knowing their plate fee goes to the worthy cause of helping fund conservation projects in Texas,” added Plante. Learn more about roadrunners in Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine: “Wild Thing: A Need for Speed”. AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) launched the longawaited greater roadrunner conservation license plate today. The plate will raise money to help support and expand wildlife viewing programs and habitat conservation work in Texas. “The greater roadrunner is an iconic image for Texans that can be seen in every county of the state and is one of the toughest birds around—it’s even known for eating rattlesnakes,” said Shelly Plante, TPWD’s Nature Tourism manager. “It’s also one of the few birds people recognize and remember the first time they see it, given its unique profile—all of which makes it the perfect symbol for Texas wildlife viewing and nature tourism.”

Texas Crop and Weather Report July 26, 2022-AgriLife Extension

The shrinking Texas cattle herd is likely to translate into higher calf and beef prices years beyond a break in the 2022 drought, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Bryan-College Station, said Texas cattle producers have culled earlier and deeper than normal this year due to drought. He suspects the number of culls, and the small number of replacement heifers could mean post-drought herd recovery could be longer than the years following record drought in 2011. It could also drive calf prices toward records set in 2014. “It’s clearly bad out there based on the number of culls we’ve seen,” he said. “Drought is forcing the issue. Whether it is zero grazing, low forage stocks, high feed and hay prices, or running low on water, Texas ranchers are facing tough decisions right now.” Texas drought shrinking cattle herd Historically, Texas accounts for a big chunk of the U.S. beef cattle herd. Mother Nature’s impact on Texas ranchers is likely to ripple into sale barns and grocery stores around the country years beyond the drought. The U.S. herd has been shrinking in recent years, and the Texas drought is further reducing cattle numbers. The U.S. beef cow herd was just over 30 million head in January, down 2% compared to last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The total estimated inventory of Texas cows that had calved and heifers was 5.1 million head, down 3% compared to 2020. Anderson said this weatherrelated contraction is impacting producers negatively. There are no estimates available that quantify the economic hardship Texas’ ranchers have endured so far in 2022, but livestock losses during the 2011 drought were estimated to be $3.23 billion. Losses included the increased cost of feeding livestock due to the lack of pastures and ranges and market losses. Market losses included the impact of fewer pounds sold per calf and any impact on market prices due to abovenormal cattle sale volumes over a short time. The 2011 drought was a bad time for ranchers, but the years following included historic cow/calf prices as the Texas and U.S. herd numbers recovered. Anderson said nominal prices are higher now than in 2011 as the drought was taking hold and forcing widespread herd consolidation

and liquidations. The weekly weighted average price for 500-600-pound steers at auctions across Texas in 2011 was $139.73 per hundredweight compared to $181.12 per hundredweight so far this year. Record prices occurred as the beef cattle herd recovered, and the same weight class steers rose to a weighted average of $236 per hundredweight in 2014. Calf prices peaked in late October 2014 at around $283 per hundredweight. The beef cattle market isn’t something that turns on a dime,” he said. “It takes time. Cattle are a long-term cycle, and I suspect this will all play out similarly to the years following the 2011 drought.” Record low number of replacement heifers Anderson’s concern about the Texas herd this time compared to 2011 is that replacement heifers – the young, future calf-producing cows – are at their lowest point nationally since USDA began keeping numbers in 1973. The number of beef replacement heifers fell to 4.15 million in July, which represents around 13.7% of the national cattle herd, Anderson said. There were more replacement heifers available in 2011, but heifers made up 13.4% of the herd at the time. “That means we are going to see tight supplies of replacement heifers, and were it to rain and break the drought and pastures recover, we’ll see higher replacement heifer prices,” he said. “The absolute numbers of heifers in 2011 through 2014 are interesting because it indicates a lot of Texas heifers were shipped elsewhere. But this year, we’re already looking at the bottom in terms of estimated numbers.” Anderson said rainfall spurring winter forages and good spring growth could trigger a reversal, but that a fall and winter with below-average rainfall could make conditions even uglier for Texas cattle producers going into the spring calving season. Despite the relatively good prices cattle producers are seeing at sale barns now, they are also dealing with much higher input and feed costs compared to a decade ago. Corn and hay prices will continue to weigh on calf prices. AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialists are warning producers to calculate stockpiled forages, hay rations and potential feed costs against calf sale potential. Feeding cows for extended periods could exceed expected price increases on calves. “If there is any way to keep young cows and hold on to some replacement heifers, we’re going to see record-high

calf prices,” he said. “I think that’s an opportunity, but that’s also easier said than done.” The 68th annual Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, BCSC, Aug. 1-3 in BryanCollege Station will focus on guiding beef cattle producers through many drought-related management decisions. To register, go to https://beefcattleshortcourse.com/. The cost is $240 for in-person attendance and $160 for online if registered by July 27. A $40 late registration fee will be charged after that date. AgriLife Extension district reporters compiled the following summaries: NORTH Topsoil moisture throughout the district was very short. Some counties reported a few sporadic rains but not enough to make a difference to pasture and crop conditions. Cattle were being sold due to a lack of grass and hay. Hay bales were difficult to find, and some soybean fields were baled up as forage. Corn was doing well and close to harvest. Cotton and sunflowers were doing well. Grain sorghum maturity stalled, and many producers were harvesting grain sorghum for livestock forage. No insect or disease pressure was reported. Grasshopper populations were steadily increasing but not causing major damages. Calves were being weaned

early, and culls cows were being shipped. EAST Drought conditions worsened despite a few popup showers. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were very short. Burn bans

LADONIA -- A sense of the past will be present starting in August at Fannindel. Volleyball will be an athletics option for junior high and high school girls -- possibly, for the first time at the Class 1A school since the late 1970s. Standout athlete Charletha Wilburn -- who extended her girls’ basketball career via a scholarship at thenknown-as Grayson County College in Denison -- will also return to her alma mater. “I am blessed,” said Wilburn. “It is a great privilege and honor to become the head coach of this new program here at the school I myself graduated from years ago. “Getting a chance to come back home to help and serve the community and the students with something I enjoy and have been blessed with -- teaching and

Charletha Wilburn. Per a schedule posted on June 7 on Fannindel’s Secondary Page on Facebook, the campaign will start for the high school team. with a scrimmage on Aug. 5 at Harts Bluff (near Mount Pleasant) and regular season opener at home against Paris Home School on Aug. 9. The Lady Falcons will play host for junior and high school matches on Aug. 19 against Ector, which started having the sport last year with junior high practices and has been aligned into Distict 19-1A for 2022 and 2023. “My objective is to create the concept of team work, teach fundamentals, improve skills and practice team tactics,” said Wilburn, “and what to do and know in situations in matches. “Practice to learn, learn to practice,” she said, “but enjoy what you do.”

Ector baseball trio, Hornet all-state

By Rich Hilliard

Ector senior Emory Cooper’s second-team outfield selection led four Fannin County players on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state baseball team for 2022. Garnering an honorable mention included: Logan Lackey, Dodd City junior, pitcher; Carter Whitburn, Ector junior, catcher; and Nathan Harris, Ector junior shortstop. The Ector trio last spring helped the Eagles make their deepest postseason run in baseball: the Region II-1A semifinals. Lackey helped the Hornets to their fourth-consecutive Region II-1A baseball final advance.

By Rich Hilliard BONHAM -- Postseason play and Jonathan Lewis have been synonymous throughout his coaching career. During a nine-year stint as the associate head coach at Prosper High School -- eightconsecutive campaigns by the Eagles ended in the playoffs. Prosper in 2018 reached the Class 5A regional semifinals. His 17 total years in the profession have also included stints at The Colony High School -- which reached the regional quarterfinals with him on staff -- and Carrollton Creekview. “Of the 14 years I have been on a high school basketball staff,” said Lewis, “I have missed the playoffs twice. “I have been very fortunate for sure,” he said. “This is the kind of success I hope to bring to Bonham!” Lewis, who was hired in June, comes to Bonham after

JOHN 14:6

spending the last school year as the varsity assistant at Little Elm. He replaces alum Eric Hicks, who is now the assistant principal at Bonham High School. Lewis inherits a Purple Warriors team which graduated six players off its 2021-22 varsity roster. “I am very excited about the upcoming season. I am anxious for school to start,” said Lewis. “We will be young, with a few seniors, but we have a great group of young guys. Our seniors will be looked to as leaders. “I have had the opportunity to watch both the varsity and sub-varsity in summer league play,” he said, noting a subvarsity team camp in Leonard and varsity play in the Ector summer league in June. “I made sure to introduce myself to both groups so they would know who I was moving forward. “We have also had some skills sessions up at the high

school. I don’t think I have met everyone, but I have met quite a few.” With these, Bonham will remain for the next two seasons in District 11-3A -- which mostly withstood realignment in February in tact -- with Bells, Blue Ridge, Leonard, Gunter, Howe and Pottsboro. Only Whitewright left the district, dropping into 2A. “I have had the chance to see some of our district opponents as well in summer league play,” said Lewis. “It will be a battle every night in the district for sure! “I know that [Bonham] made the playoffs a few years ago,” he said. “I see a lot of older trophies in the trophy case which makes me believe there has been a rich tradition in Bonham boys’ basketball. “One thing I liked about Bonham was that Bonham reminds me a lot of the town I grew up in. They are about the same size. The smaller community was definitely something that interested me.”

Bonham alum Nick Rhinehart has earned a spot at wide receiver on the College Football Network 2022 Preseason All-Midwest Conference offense. As a true freshman, Rhinehart, ended his inaugural season in 2021 at Grinnell College (Iowa) in the Top 10 in two conference receiving categories. He finished fourth in the Midwest Conference with 647 receiving yards and seventh in the MWC with 43 receptions. Rhinehart garnered 135 yards, a 74-yard reception

and caught two of his four touchdowns -- each a season-best -- on Nov. 6. Grinnell also utilized him on special teams: kickoffs, punting and field goals. Rhinehart’s sophomore season will begin on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m., when Grinnell plays host to Monmouth College.
