Nai Bulung is taken from the Batak language which means Mother of Bamboo. Bamboo is used as the main material because it is easily found on the shores of Lake Toba and commonly used by local residents.

Traditional Batak house or Bolon House has a structure on stilts, high roofs, and Batak ornaments. It is the main feature his tourist area, so the shape of the restroom building takes a simpler form to keep the Bolon House as the main focus.

The difference of wall heights and columns leave spaces between the beginning of the roof structure and the end of the wall to allow natural ventilation. This building looks extended to the side from the front of the building, but the space arrangement has a certain slope so it gives a variation to the building shape.
29
Bamboo and brick is the only materials used in this building, as it is commonly found in the area. Bamboo poles are placed perpendicular to the ground surrounding the building, acts as the building’s facade. The gap between the poles allows natural ventilation and the gap between the poles and the walls is used to place bamboo plants to let fresh air into the building. It is also used to block the view from the outside. The use of local materials shows local image without having to follow the typical Bataknese building form.

Membangun Braga
Membangun Braga Braga, West Java
competition entry in collaboration with Apri Surya H.P.
Rapid population growth is a major problem in Indonesia because the enormous number of population is parallel with the need for shelter. However the amount of land needed to fulfill housing needs is far from sufficient, resulting illegal houses and slums. The government has made efforts to relocate residents in slums. One of the process is transfering the resident to a transit residential area while permanent housings are built. 41
42
architecture portfolio tri miranda
Membangun Braga
(eng: Building Braga) is an effort to help residents in slum area to maintain their daily environment as it was before the eviction process by not moving the residents into a new location far away from their initial houses. it is also intends to develop social relations between residents.
Case Study: Tamansari, Bandung Eviction Process in Indonesia
One of the most popular eviction cases in Indonesia occured in Bandung City, Tamansari village to be exact. Tamansari Village is an illegal settlement area located on the banks of the Cikapundung River which began in 1950.
Arising Problems
social conflict
administration matters
land limitations
residents has lived in their initial dwellings for almost their entire lives. transit locations are not promised to meet the needs of the community.
administration matters the requirement to obtain a residence right is hard to fulfill, because generally residents in the slum area are transmigrants or does not have the documents required.
land limitations the amount of land provided by the government does not meet the amount of residents that needs to be relocated, even those which located far away from their initial houses.
43
Quoting Ridwan Kamil through kompas.com on 30/10/2017, the background of this project is to increase the capacity of the population of Bandung, and housing capacity in the same location can be quadrupled. It is also focused on the lower middle class residents. During this project, the government provided a transit house in the form of low-cost flat in Rancacili, located 16.6 kilometers from Tamansari.

Kampung Braga
Development Step
phase 4
Kampung Braga is a high-density settlement located on the other side of Jalan Braga, Bandung and directly adjacent to the Cikapundung River. The land was originally owned by H. Affandi, so local residents called this village by the name of “Affandi’s Village”. The area begin to be crowded because of the transfer of ownership of land to various parties. In 2018, 543 families were recorded occupying an area of ± 4.95 hectares, so this area is included in the category of urban villages.
