From humble beginnings... TaylorMcAllum has a long standing history in the communications industry, developed over 25 years of quietly working under the radar supporting local and global businesses. We have vast experience with a number of small and large scale design programmes, yet we remain niche and mobile. While we might be more commonly recognised as a multidisciplinary design consultancy we are morphing into much more. After 25 years in the industry working for national and international brands, we are now realising our own set of brands, brand systems and business models. Our talented team includes: graphic and industrial designers, interface designers for both online and interactive solutions, intellectual property consultants, marketing strategists, international award winning creatives, photographers and production services systems across multiple levels of industry. I started where all good designers start… with a printing apprenticeship. Luckily, I discovered that solvents and chemicals caused a severe reaction to my hands that looked like some form of flesh eating fungi. Soon after completing my apprenticeship, I bailed, worked in costing and estimating, managed a small printing and art production business before heading off to design school.
I started out on my career path as a hairdresser and make-up artist, which, in turn led to a modelling contract with Sebastian International in London. When this contract came to an end I found temporary work as a Field Controller with international research and analysis company, Harris Research. It was here that I realised how much I loved being involved in all aspects of a business and learning how everything works. Since it was my job to ensure that all jobs were delivered to the client on time and in budget, I focussed on streamlining the systems that made each part work efficiently and effectively with the other.
In 1990, after graduating, I worked as a designer at a number of design consultancies and advertising agencies throughout the Pacific rim region on numerous accounts that included Levi’s, Coca Cola, David Jones, Luthansa, NSW Tourism, Tracks Magazine and Mambo, before relocating back to Aotearoa and finally settling in the beautiful Bay of Plenty in ’98. The years since have been spent in more earnest toil on all sorts of design and branding projects from Nesian Mystik to 2Stage Bikes and Altex Coatings. During this, were seven years running my own full service agency as creative director, heading up 16 staff with my wife Ronnie as MD, out of Mount Maunganui and Auckland based design studios/offices. More recently, I’ve had time out on my own, honing my skill sets and spending quality time with my groms. If you pushed me on my expertise I’d have to say typography. And branding. And identity. And packaging. At least that’s what I told Compac Industries before they gave me their creative account. (It was fantastic, doing all the branding, packaging, instore displays, publications, point of sale, building & environmental graphics... the lot!) Having to move from London to Devon I took a filing job at the City Council where I worked for 7 years in the Finance Department. During this time I worked in every aspect of finance, from preparation of accounts to budgeting, stewardship and presentations to Council as well as time spent in cashiering, auditing and financial administration. Whilst employed at the Council, I was fortunate enough to be able to study for my Accounting Technician qualification, which assisted my rise from Filing Clerk to Accountant. During the last 3 years I was one of team of 5 responsible for the development and successful implementation of a range of specific computerised financial systems to manage Creditors, Debtors, Housing Rents, Housing Benefits, Council Tax, Sub Contractors and Direct Service Organisations and one master system which each of these systems fed into – the Financial Information Management System. Since moving back to New Zealand in 1997 I have worked in the creative and design industry, enabling me to exercise some of my own creativity from time to time. As Managing Director of Ingenium Design Group I was responsible for the implementation of systems and procedures and general smooth running of the business as well as liaising with clients and designers throughout the entire creative process. I’m passionate about working with clients to ensure they get the very best out of their brand delivery - strategically, visually and financially.
