Key Information for Course Selection ● Students must select 3 HL and 3 SL courses ● Students are automatically enrolled into the DP Core: EE, CAS, TOK ● Students graduate in Grade 12 with both an OSSD and IB Diploma ○
IB subjects are mapped onto Ontario Ministry courses
○
HL and SL courses will usually have the same course codes
● HL Courses are special: ○
Ontario universities will grant first year credit for HL courses with a score of 5 or above
○
UK universities will specify HL requirements for admission
○
US universities will look for overall balance in HLs and course selection to best match a student’s profile and program of interest
Additional thoughts about Course Selection ● Studio hours: When applying to a portfolio-based program, arts at DP level are a huge advantage. Do note that both Film and Visual Arts require a great deal of hours in studio - an important consideration for balance when building your timetable. ● Summer courses: when a familiarity but not a proficiency is required.
● Gather more information from: ○ Current Grade 10 subject teachers for specific guidance around SL/HL details along with current standing in Grade 10 courses
Common Course Prerequisites Humanities English Global Politics or Economics Visual Arts
Business and Computer Science English 2 maths (generally SL Math = MCV4U and MHF4U) Maybe one science
Engineering English 2 sciences (Chemistry and Physics) 2 maths (HL Math)
Arts English ● specific to the art that will be studied ● portfolio required, specific work done and Grade 12 courses completed
Biological Sciences English 2 sciences (Biology, Chemistry) – one university recommends Physics – there is a bridge program
Use Ontario Universities’ Info!
*summer school science– marked in OUAC as summer school, depends on student if this is a good choice HL/SL designation – sometimes has an impact on entrance and for advance credit in Ontario – HL designation matters for UK school acceptance **Please check OUinfo or specific university websites for exact admission information. Information changes frequently.
The University Application Process – Requirements Ontario Students need to complete (and be competitive in) three areas ● Specific course requirements (e.g. math grade) ● Overall grades ● Profile ○ Check ouinfo and website (not for international students) Canada ● Similar requirements , IB total score International ● Dependent on the school + some very specific testing requirements UKCAT, SAT; IB total score ; profile (EE, CAS, etc.)
The University Application Process – Timing Ontario ● All major volunteer work CAS projects done before end of Grade 11. ● Keep up extracurriculars and leadership! ● References – only if needed – should give teachers two weeks’ notice ● Applications are done in the fall of Grade 12.
