The Gift of Time
Our Mission TMS delivers a seamless, internationally-acclaimed educational experience designed to inspire and challenge students to discover the best of who they are and to achieve their full potential.
Our Vision To be embraced as an outstanding school with an unparalleled educational experience.
Our Promise TMS enables each student to define and realize success in university, career and in life through our unparalleled educational experience.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
It is a privilege for me to write on behalf of the Board of Trustees. It is our role, partnering with the School leadership, to serve the TMS Community. The Board is made up of committed volunteers who offer our experience and skill sets in an effort to ensure the long term health of the School we all care for. Being strategic and forward thinking allows TMS the best chance to develop its vision, a vision we believe in.
As I look back over the last year, I am proud to see some clear evidence that TMS is thriving. Our student numbers are at an all-time high, in fact we are effectively full. Applications to TMS continue to grow year on year. You, our parents, have shown huge support of the strategic work of the School through your giving – the Board very much appreciates that generosity. And emerging beautifully and soon to be opened is our new construction at the Lower School. Not only will the building offer amazing programmatic and community space, but it will also add to the gravitas and sense of place we believe TMS merits. Most importantly, the work we do as a Board is in support of our students. It is our desire that each year you continue to see the strategy of the School to create an environment in which our students’ journey through TMS gets better and better. To this end, on behalf of the Board, I want to thank our Head of School David Young and the staff and teachers for the enormous work and deep care they commit to our students every day. This is the essence of our School.
This report reflects our desire to be transparent and to share the success of the last year with you. Thank you for all your ongoing support.
Greg Kanargelidis Chair, Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Our theme this year has been “Strong back, soft front, wild heart”, which is a Brené Brown quote that captures our desire to build in our students’ three critical mindsets – a mindset of Resilience, a mindset of Positivity and a mindset of Entrepreneurial Thinking.
In a rapidly changing world, and receiving excellent feedback from our amazing graduates, it is ever clearer that we need to equip our students with more than excellent academics. Alongside their academic abilities, they need personal traits that give them the ability to proactively and independently face the challenges and seize the opportunities before them.
It has been a real joy for me to see the ways this thinking has infused the work of the School and impacted our students and the manner in which they have increasingly applied these mindsets to their work. It has also been rewarding to see how our School community has collectively manifested these same three mindsets and the powerful impact that is having on the trajectory of TMS. We have shown real community resilience as we put our shared efforts and sacrifices towards the construction of our new entrance and double gym. By the time you read this report, construction will be completed. We managed this due to our collective efforts in together raising $2 million. We have shown a community mindset of positivity, drawing more and more families into our community. The feeling has been 2
palpable. It was so lovely to see the outcome of developing such a positive culture come together at our Gala in May. It was a gorgeous celebration of a community we care so much about.
And lastly, we have shown we are a community that has a mindset of Entrepreneurial Thinking. Entrepreneurial Thinking, as we understand it, is the ability to be nimble and flexible when faced with challenge, to consider unique, innovative ways to move forward an idea, to network believing a group can offer better solutions and supports, to be curious and engaged. It has been my privilege to meet with family after family, parent after parent willing to partner with me in thinking about how to make our school better. I have appreciated your ideas, your support and networks and your curiosity about how best to create a journey for our students that is excellent. The outcomes of your Entrepreneurial Thinking and partnership are woven into the fabric of the landscape at TMS in a manner that doesn’t exist elsewhere. I am humbled by your support. Thank you.
However, I know we have more we can do for our students and for this community. This report is a snapshot that provides a view of an incredibly successful year at TMS. I urge your continued support of TMS, believing we have only just begun.
David Young Head of School
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
TMS is an independent not-for-profit school that offers a powerful educational journey for students within a uniquely-designed framework combining the Montessori and IB programs.
These summarized financial statements were prepared from the information contained in the annual consolidated financial statements for TMS that is audited by BDO Canada LLP. The annual financial statements were prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-forprofit organizations.
The Finance Committee assists the Board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibility by approving the annual operating and capital plans, monitoring the financial results of the School on an ongoing basis and ensuring that the long-term financial strategy is closely aligned with the overall Strategic Plan. The financial stability of the School remains the primary focus of the Committee. The 2018-19 operating results were excellent, with strong enrolment levels across all grades driving a healthy operating surplus. Prudent fiscal management and careful cost control allow TMS to operate with no debt. The Lower School expansion will be completed by the end of 2019 and we look forward to unveiling the new Main Entrance, Atrium and Gym in early 2020. We are grateful that the Building our Significance Capital Campaign reached its fundraising goals, through the generosity of the TMS community.
With the completion of this first significant building phase, we now turn our attention to the Upper School, where plans are in place to expand the facilities to provide a new Dining Hall, along with expanded learning spaces. Operational funds are primarily designed to cover academic spending, so the continued support by our families of Annual Giving and the Capital Campaign is vital and greatly appreciated. As a reminder, these charitable donations are tax-deductible and as such, are a very effective way for families to assist TMS.
Deborah McMillan Chair, Finance Committee

Building our Significance means providing a venue within which students, families and staff can thrive. At TMS, this means developing intentional spaces through which excellence in learning can occur in ways that realize TMS’ vision and values. During our 2018-2019 Academic Year, our Phase 1 expansion and redevelopment made incredible strides. We successfully reached our fundraising goal of $2 Million in support of this incredible first phase of the campaign. TMS would like to thank all donors who have supported our Capital Campaign, with a special mention of those families who have made leadership gifts (over $25,000) toward Building our Significance.
