The Upper School at TMS An Overview


Overview of the Upper School • TMS has the two campuses: • In the Lower School, we have students

from 18 months to Grade 6 following the Montessori programme

• In the Upper School, we have students

from Grade 7 to 12 following the International Baccalaureate programme • •

Grades 7 – 10 - IB Middle Years Programme. Grades 11 & 12 – IB Diploma Programme

• Two classes of Grades 7, 8, 10 , 11 & 12. Currently 3 classes for grade 9.

• Maximum of 22 students in a class. • There are currently 265 students enrolled at the Upper School.







IB Middle Years Programme • Is an excellent preparation for the IB

Diploma progamme through skills and content.

• Focuses on learning skills: responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration , initiative and self regulation

• Develops students as a “whole person”

with activities beyond academics, such as student clubs, sports team, and social and community issues.

• IB MYP personal project – in grade 10, a

significant piece of work that is the product of the student’s initiative and creativity. It reflects the student’s interest.

Theory of Knowledge Writers’ Craft


IB Diploma Programme Students select 3 HL courses and 3 standard level courses. Theory of Knowledge- TOK - This course challenges students to question the foundations of knowledge - Encourages students to understand other cultural perspectives, while building his/her understanding of the world - Helps to develop the ability to analyze evidence expressed in a rational argument. - Students submit a major essay for external assessment along with a presentation for their internal assessment. - Student earn an addition Ontario Ministry credit – Philosophy Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) - CAS program is a way to challenge DP students to take initiative and helps develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making. Extended Essay (EE) - Each student will conduct an independent inquiry into a topic of interest in a specific subject. - Completing the essay provides the student to solidify independent research and writing skills each student will work with a teacher to provide guidance and support throughout the process we provide students with additional support by linking the EE preparation with a Ontario Ministry course – The Writer’s Craft. A 4000 word document that is a required component of the DP programme. - Helps to cultivate student’s ability to develop an argument in support of an area of great interest to them.



Houses When students start at the Upper School, they are placed in one of the 4 houses; Helios, Atlas, Tethys and Phoebe. Students participate in fun house events throughout the year, creating a vey positive atmosphere on campus.


Athletics TMS is part of Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) The focus of our program is to provide opportunities that support personal growth, and pursuit of active and healthy lifestyle. TMS offers an outstanding Athletic Program, following core sports through CISAA ; Basketball, volleyball, field hockey, ultimate frisbee, curling, badminton, track and field and cross country.


Citizenship

TMS students are actively involved in supporting local causes- from making meals at a youth shelter to raising funds for refugee families. Our students donate hundreds of hours of time to make a difference in their community.


Leadership Student Council: TMS has 34 students leaders from Grades 7 to 12, voted by their peers each year. The Student Council provides leadership in all aspects of school life. Public Speaking: TMS Students learn public speaking in our Children’s House program so they have the confidence to speak on a range of topics throughout their years here. Student Ambassadors TMS has student ambassadors who represent the School, providing tours to new parents and hosting school events.


Arts

Students thrive artistically at TMS, working individually or in groups with guidance and support, in Art, Music and Drama.
