David Young Head of School
Welcome to the TMS Virtual Art Gallery, which allows us to celebrate the work of our MYP and DP students in Visual Arts and Design. We are very thankful to Jeff C ’21 and Cassandra K ’21 who spent countless hours working on creating this virtual gallery to showcase student work. This gallery represents the work done this year by our MYP (Grades 7-10) students and DP (Grades 11 and 12) Visual Arts students. We thank our Visual Arts and Design teachers for their work in guiding their students through the creation of these pieces of work. Special mention must be made of our DP2 Visual Arts students (Grade 12) who would have had an exhibition of the work they completed during the course of their two year artistic journey. Congratulations to all! Sheila Thomas Head of Upper School

Canadian Landscape Drawing Synesthetic Principles Painting Ancestral Crest honouring family heritage
Ms. Neff
Grade 8
Visual Arts Grade 8 Artists worked first on paper and later in a digital medium to create Anime inspired landscapes and characters. They investigated figure drawing, created dynamic movement and used digital painting strategies. These compositions focused on the PRINCIPLES of balance & proportion/ scale, and the ELEMENTS of colour, value and space/ perspective. Ms. Warren, Ms. Tomachynska and Ms. Wong
Grade 9
Visual Arts Grade 9 Artists are displaying two of their pieces. The first is a still life pencil sketch with a focus on composition. Careful shading and rich value contrast is used to accurately communicate 3D shapes and textures. The second is an expressive painting done in the style of their focus artist - Marc, Kandinsky, Pollock, Bush, De Kooning or Pratt. Grade 9 artists focused on building colour and paint application technique. Ms. Bouzina and Ms. Warren
Grade 10
Visual Arts Grade 10 Artists are displaying two of their pieces: Self Portraits - Past, Present, and Future Self Students studied the work of Frida Kahlo and Chuck Close to examine how artists express their self identity and created triptych self-portrait drawings using a variety of drawing methods. Watercolour - Social Issue Awareness Posters Students explored a variety of watercolour and ink techniques and responded to a social issue with a personal artwork in the form of a social issue poster. Ms. Bouzina
Grade 11
Visual Arts DP1 Grade 11 Artists are displaying three chosen works from their DP Portfolio of finished pieces. Each artist has made a leap in analytical skills with high-level art criticism and in technical abilities by experimenting and perfecting their skills in a variety of media. The pieces included in this Virtual Gallery span across varied units, from Collections to Large-Scale and Freestyle works of art. Ms. Neff
Grade 12
Visual Arts DP2 Grade 12 Artists are creating beyond the curriculum in their final months in Studio. With completion of the final Comparative Study, in consultation with the DP teacher, students declared an individual trajectory based on their projected theme for the final Exhibition. DP Artists show a profound capacity for reflection in the Process Portfolio, documenting ideation to the finished art piece, elucidating on personal meaning embodied in each piece he/ she creates. Along with the DP Virtual Gallery, viewers can visit the TMS site to see an indepth look at each Graduating Artist and their work. Congratulations to the Class of 2021 Artists, on a brilliant final Exhibition! Ms. Neff
Grade 7
Design Grade 7 Design students created scale models of their own bridge designs as part of an Interdisciplinary Unit with Science. They combined what they learned about structures and different types of bridge design in Science with new orthographic and isometric drafting skills in Design to develop their bridge plans.
The results were accurate scale models of six lane bridges that can safely span a 1.5 km wide valley. An added challenge was that no piers could go in the river or within 20 m of the banks - a span of 220 m! Ms. Warren
Grade 8 Design Grade 8 Design students explored the concept of “Goodvertising” advertising that could make the world a better place. They discussed the civic responsibilities companies have to their clients and the communities they serve.
Using Lifebuoy soap as an example, students learned to communicate effectively using simplified instructional graphics to promote handwashing within the home and at school. Ms. Dickson and Ms. Wong
Grade 9
Design Covid-19 Health and Safety Guideline Infographics In this unit, students continued to work on their strong graphic design skills while solving an authentic educational problem to create a product meeting their client’s needs. The solution was a Covid-19 Infographic.
Ms. Bouzina and Ms. Bowker

Photography
Evolve The student-led annual TMS Photography Exhibition celebrates the talent and creativity of student and faculty photographers surrounding a common theme. This year’s theme is “evolve”. Student and faculty members were asked to capture moments that demonstrate evolution or an evolving concept. Using different skills and techniques, they were tasked with communicating aesthetics, emotion and their photography philosophy.
