Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace Hazardous chemicals are substances and mixtures used in the workplace that can be a health or physicochemical hazard if not handled or stored correctly. Health hazards such as skin irritants, carcinogens or respiratory sensitisers can have an adverse effect on a worker’s health as a result of direct contact with or exposure to the chemical, usually through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion. Physicochemical hazards generally result from the physical or chemical properties, like flammability, corrosiveness, oxidising agents or their explosive potential. Research findings:
Life expectancy of a chemist is at least 10 years shorter! (OSHA, 29CFR Part 1910)
16% of the pregnant female chemists have problems with their baby! (AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION)
Chemical Exposure Standards Exposure standards are legal concentration limits that must not be exceeded. The exposure is divided to 2 types: Exposure Type :
Long Term Dangerous Concentrations
Health Effect :
Immediately Dangerous Concentrations
Chronic
Acute
OSHA Standard :
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL, PEL-TWA)
Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL)
ACGIH Standard :
Threshold Limit Value (TLV, TLV-TWA)
Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL)
NIOSH Standard :
Recommended Exposure Limit (REL)
Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH)
Express in Time Weighted Average (TWA), an average concentration inhaled over 8 hours per day
Express in maximum concentrations for 15 minutes exposure
Hard to identify, No fume, No smell, Non visible Create Long-term Health Consequences!
Due to it acute and severe health effect, we are likely to pay more attention, and put in place a ready safety measures.
Duration of Exposure : Challenges :
The list of workplace exposure standards for airborne contaminants is contained within these publications: i. American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), update every year ii. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) iii. US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

Hazard Prevention and Control The Hierarchy of Hazard Control is the most widely use decision making model by EH&S (Environmental, Health & Safety) officers to prevent, reduce and control the hazards at the workplace. The system is called a hierarchy because you must apply each level in the orderly manner, from top to bottom. In terms of effectiveness at reducing risk, the first level in the hierarchy - Elimination & Substitution, is the most effective, down to the last, Personal Protective Equipment, which has the least effectiveness.
The Hierarchy of Hazard Control MOST
Effective Reliable Sustainable
Elimination/ Substitution
Eliminate the exposure before it can occur
Engineering Controls
Requires a physical containment or change to the workplace
Administrative Controls
Requires worker to DO something
Personal Protective Equipment
Requires worker to WEAR something ( source : OSHA )
LEAST
Effective Reliable Sustainable Control Level
Example
Eliminate & Substitute
Eliminate the use of TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) via using a Post Column in HPLC detection of Aflatoxin B1 & G1 Substitute the use of Chloroform with Carbon Dioxide, in Animal Research If this is not practical, then use
Engineering Controls
Only performance chemical handling inside a Ductless Fume Hood or Ducted Fume Hood (Local Exhaust Ventilation) Reduce the respiratory particulate using an extraction & filtration system If this is not practical, then use
Administrative Controls
Work scheduling, Good Working Practice Staff training to improve competency and awareness If this is not practical, then use
Personal Protective Equipment
This is the last option after you have considered all other possibilities. Respirators, Gloves, Safety Glasses and etc.

Local Exhaust Ventilation: Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is designed to capture, receive or contain the airborne contaminant at source before it has chance to enter the workers breathing zone or mix with the workplace air. As the control is applied as close to the source as possible, considerably less air is required when compared to general ventilation and consequently LEV is typically more effective in both terms of effectiveness and cost. For this reason LEV is preferred to general ventilation and should be considered to be higher in the hierarchy of controls.
4
Ductless, Ducted & the Green Fume Hood The most common LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) found in laboratory is the Fume Hood. For years, the basic objective of the fume hood was to capture, contain, and exhaust hazardous vapours and particulates away from laboratory environment. During the past two decades, this practice has become a major focus for building owners, scientists, lab designers, and the fume hood industry, with increased anxiety over the health and safety of laboratory workers, the impact on the environment, and escalating energy costs. Until fairly recently, many fume hoods offered little in the way of energy efficiency. We can now categories the Fume Hood into 3 types: 1) Ducted Fume Hood: The traditional ducted fume hoods, the Constant Air Volume (CAV) type are one of the largest consumers of energy within a laboratory building, release hazardous chemicals into the environment and, from the laboratory planning perspective, are inherently inflexible. Ducted fume hoods are, however, an essential component of today’s laboratory. 2)
Ductless Fume Hood: Ductless fume hood is the filtering fume hood. The hood incorporates new air filtration technology (Impregnated Activated Carbon Filters), detection technology (automatic or manual), and communication detection software. Ductless Fume Hood are not designed to replace the ducted fume hood. At about 70% of all chemical application can be performed in the ductless fume hood. It requires to validate the user application by manufacturer, in order to provide suitable filter configuration and shelf life of the filters. Ductless Fume Hoods are widely used for specific application in the laboratory. It is cost effective, safe, flexible and sustainable solution to the laboratory fume hood requirement.
3)
Green Fume Hood: Green Fume Hood is dubbed by some in the industry as the next generation of chemical fume hoods. It has generated much excitement from building owners, scientists and lab planners looking for a safe, energy efficient and sustainable solution. The Green Fume Hood is developed by Erlab, France. The recent filtration technology breakthrough, called “Neutrodine”, and are capable of containing much wider spectrum of chemicals than their Carbon - and HEPA-filtering predecessors. The filter system design incorporates a primary and a secondary filter along with integrated sensor technology to ensure proper containment, alarm, notification and laboratory safety. The hood has communication software capable of providing remote management and access to the scientists, EH&S personnel, and facility managers. Once the filter has reached its useable life, it is removed and disposed of in a controlled manner.

Green Fume Hood: next generation chemical fume hood What is Neutrodine Filtration Technology?
Comparison of vapor retention for:
It is the revolutionary new technology incorporated in the Neutrodine filtration system, which enables large quantities of toxics molecules to be trapped before the filter is saturated. The normal high performance carbon filter has been impregnated with material such as rare earth, in order to capture large variety of molecules from diverse chemical families and reactive behaviours. And this, in turn, obstructs a portion of the pores needed for adsorption. Neutrodine, by contrast, has been engineered by Erlab to effectively adsorb a board spectrum of molecules while increasing retention capacity. The result is far more effective than traditional carbon - impregnated or not.
