10 BENEFITS OF YOUTH SPORTS PARTICIPATION Participation in Youth Sports has steadily been on the rise for the past twenty years. Millions of children across the country take part in one or more sport throughout the year. It is not uncommon for children to start participating in sports as early as four to five years of age. Based on this information and based on the amount of time that children spend participating in sports, it is critically important that they are provided with an experience that offers them many benefits. This responsibility falls on the shoulders of the coaches and parents that often volunteer their time to work with these young athletes.
When an athlete participates in a sport, they will experience many benefits. Some of these will be short-term and easily recognized. While others will not be as easy to recognize, but will last with the athlete much longer and will help shape their overall development. The ten benefits below are most commonly associated with sports participation. It is important to note that in order for these benefits to be recognized and appreciated by the athlete, they must be included and emphasized in all practice and game plans. By participating in sports, the young athlete will: 1. Develop and become proficient at the
various sports skills. 2. Develop skills needed to socialize with their peers as well as adults. 3. Develop independence and confidence. 4. Develop a sense of achievement, which helps develop a positive self-image. 5. Develop leadership skills and qualities. 6. Learn how to cooperate and compete. 7. Develop agility, coordination, endurance, flexibility, speed and strength. 8. Develop the ability to make decisions and accept responsibilities. 9. Learn to understand and express emotions, imagination, and appreciation for
what the body can do. 10. Develop an interest in continuing sports participation as an adult. Looking for more sports tips and advice? Visit us today! BASKETBALL SHOOTING: 10 VALUABLE TIPS TO BECOMING A BETTER SHOOTER! These Basketball Shooting Tips are a great way for players, parents & coaches to learn and understand the proper mechanics and techniques needed to be a great shooter. Every basketball player loves to shoot the ball! The most practiced skill in the game is shooting. Coaches spend a good deal of their practice time on shooting drills to improve their players' skill level. After all, if you can't shoot - you can't score! Whether a player is shooting a jump shot, lay-up, or free throw - there are
certain techniques they must use to be successful. The basketball shooting tips below will give players, parents and coaches a better understanding of what these techniques are! 1. Players should always use proper shooting techniques. Remembering BEEF - (Balance, Eye, Elbow, FollowThrough) will help when shooting the basketball. Players must get into the habit of always using these proper shooting techniques - whether in practices or a game. If proper techniques are not used, bad habits are formed that are of-
ten difficult to correct. If players don't have a shooting technique - they need to develop one! 2. Players should always be relaxed and concentrate on the basket. Players should focus on the part of the rim that is closest to them as they shoot the basketball. When shooting lay-ups and bank shots, players should focus on the part of the backboard where they will bank the ball. 3. Players must know when they have a good shot - and then take it. Players must find the right balance between
shooting too often and not shooting enough. As players develop confidence in their shot, they will also develop the ability to know when they have a good shot to take. 4. Players should be in proper balance when shooting the basketball. Proper balance (front to back and side to side) is critical on all shots. 5. Players should follow through on every shot they take. They should also hold their follow through as this is one thing that will show them why they made

or missed the shot. 6. When shooting the jump shot, players should jump naturally. They should avoid forcing their jump - it should be nice and easy. Players should jump straight up and release the shot at the top of their jump. "Up, Hang, Shoot" is an easy way to remember this. 7. Players should have an arc on every shot they take. The height of the arc will vary from player to player. Some players shoot with a high arc, while others have more of a flat shot. As long as
the player is using proper shooting techniques and the shots are going in, then the arc is fine. 8. When shooting free-throws, players should be relaxed, concentrate on the basket, and have their knees bent slightly. 9. When shooting free-throws, players should keep their routine simple. This helps them concentrate more on their shot and not their routine. They should avoid excessive and unnecessary movement. They should only use the motion
needed to take and make the shot. 10. Players should practice all of their shots. They should learn to shoot from any location on the court, within their range. By doing this, they become more of an all-around shooter. Players should strive for the following shooting goals: 99+% lay-ups, 70+% free-throws, 50+% field goals, 33+% 3-pointers. These goals can be modified for younger players. Looking for more basketball shooting tips and advice? Visit us today! Joe runs

MAKING A BASKETBALL PASS–17 TIPS FOR SUCCESS! Undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of basketball is passing. In order for a team to move the ball effectively they must be efficient at basketball passing. Passing is used in almost every part of the game. Let's think about it for a minute. The offensive team uses the pass to advance the ball down-court on the fast break. They also use the pass to move the basketball around in their half-court offense. Various
passes are used depending on where and who the ball is being thrown to. Rebounders use various basketball passes to throw to an outlet player which is the initial step of initiating the fast-break. Offensive players must use a variety of passes when executing an inbound pass. It's easy to see how important the pass is to the offensive players on the court. Every player must be able to pass the basketball effectively and ef-
ficiently in order to help their team succeed. In order to do this, they must have strong fundamentals and techniques. They must also practice basketball drills that work on a variety of passes as well as passing situations. As players practice their basketball passing and as they use various passes during their games, there are certain tips they must be aware of and keep in mind. These are the passing dos and don'ts. Every player must realize the
importance these dos and don'ts have on their effectiveness as a passer. The players that are able to implement or eliminate these tips will become extremely successful at basketball passing! The Dos Of Passing A Basketball: • Do make the easy pass. • Do hit the open player. • Do use fakes before making the pass. (continued on next page)

MAKING A BASKETBALL PASS–17 TIPS FOR SUCCESS! (continued from previous page)
• Do use an air pass on the fast break - not the bounce pass. • Do use the dribble to create better passing lanes. • Do pass to the low post from below the foul line. • Do use a bounce pass to feed the post. • Do follow through on every pass - don't let them float. • Do pass with two hands. One handed passes are harder to receive.
• Do pass away from the defender. • Do face the basketball to improve your vision of the court. The Don'ts Of Passing A Basketball: • Don't throw to a teammate’s voice. • Don't jump in the air to make a pass. • Don't pass to a teammate who is in trouble. • Don't make a pass to a teammate
that will get them into trouble. • Don't make a pass from the middle of the court - pick a side and then pass. • Don't overpass the ball. Looking for more tips and advice on passing a basketball? Visit us today!

HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL DEFENSE: 10 TIPS FOR SUCCESS Learning How To Play Basketball Defense properly helps teams become more successful. I'm sure everyone has heard the saying, "Defense wins championships". That's a very common statement when describing the most successful teams in basketball - at all levels of play. As many times as we've heard that said and actually proven on the court, most players and coaches still don't make defense a top priority when de-
veloping their game. Why is that? Well to start, learning how to play basketball defense is hard work! Sadly enough, most players and coaches aren't willing to put in the time and effort needed to become successful on the defensive end of the court. The other reason most players and coaches aren't dedicated to improving their defensive game is that it isn't as fun as other aspects of the game. Yes - shooting, dribbling, passing and
the other aspects of offense are often more enjoyable to teach, learn and practice. So...that's where most players and coaches focus their time and effort. But in order to become complete and wellrounded in all aspects of the game, players and coaches must dedicate a portion of their time on learning how to play basketball defense. It's critical to their success! The ten criteria I have listed below will help determine whether a player
can be considered a complete defensive player. This is helpful for coaches and players alike. How so? Well, coaches can use these criteria to help develop their approach to the defensive game. They can use it as a foundation for success. Players can use this information to help them focus on the importance of becoming a defensive specialist! Again, they can use this as their foundation for success on the defensive end of the court! (continued on next page)

It's no secret that Basketball Strength Training has become one of the most important elements of a player's overall developmental training program. In order to achieve peak levels of performance on the basketball court players, of all ages and competitive levels, must be dedicated to a basketball weight training program. This article will outline ten exercises that basketball players should perform during their basketball strength training routine, along with information on proper weight selection and workout set-up.
10 Exercises Of An Effective Basketball Strength Training Program • Bench Press - Lay flat and keep your butt down. Push the weight up off your chest and back toward the spotter. Grip should not be too wide or too tight. • Bent Over Rows - Assume a low stance, bent over slightly with head up. Pull the weight up toward you. • Curls - Keep the elbows close to the body for a full range of motion. Lean against a wall to help keep the back straight. • Lat Pulls - Use a lat machine for this
exercise. Pull-ups and chin-ups are a good substitute if you don't have access to a lat machine. • Squats - Place the bar across the shoulders, not the neck. Feet should be a little more than shoulder-width apart, and the back should be straight. (Use a weight belt for additional back support.) Use a chair at first to touch your butt to (do not sit), and then go back up. A leg press machine can also be used for this exercise. • Leg Extension - Use the leg extension machine, or have your partner pro-
vide resistance. • Leg Curl - Use the leg curl machine, or have your partner provide resistance. • Triceps - Use the triceps machine, or use free weights. Lay on your back and bring the bar back toward your nose, then push it out. • Dips - This works the triceps if you are unable to get to a machine or free weights. • Sit-ups - Perform with knees bent slightly, also rotate your body to work your sides. BASKETBALL STRENGTH TRAINING PROGRAM TIPS–BECOME AN EXPLOSIVE PLAYER TODAY! (continued from previous page)
Appropriate Weight Selection For A Basketball Strength Training Program Do not work out with your maximum lifting weight for each exercise. The first week you will be finding the appropriate weights to work with. For example, if your maximum on the bench press is 140, then a good bench press workout would be: • 1 set of 10 repetitions - 100 (warmup). • 1 set of 10 repetitions - 120. • 2 set of 10 repetitions - 130.
Basketball Strength Training Workout Set-Up • For each exercise, four sets of 10 repetitions are used. • For example, 1 set of 10 reps warmup; 1 set of 10 reps; 2 sets of 10 reps. • The weight will increase with each set. • As you get stronger, the weight used in each set will increase. • Rest about 1 minute in between sets. By consistently following the Basketball Strength Training Program tips
listed above, players should be able to develop an extremely successful strength training routine. If you're looking for a highly effective, step-by-step workout routine to follow, check out these free muscle building tips. BASKETBALL DRIBBLING - 10 KEYS TO SUCCESS! Dribbling is probably one of the most popular skills of the game - second only to shooting. Players at every level of competition love to dribble the basketball! There's something about having that basketball in your hands that just feels magical! Most players and coaches spend a good portion of their practice time working on various basketball dribbling skills and drills. In order for players to become effective and efficient at dribbling the basketball they must continually improve their techniques and fundamentals. Players that are dedicated to improving this critical aspect of the game - those willing to put in the time and effort needed to succeed - will turn into incredibly effec-
tive dribblers. They will become virtually unstoppable with the basketball! Being effective at dribbling a basketball not only helps improve all other aspects of a player's game - but also helps make the players around them better! As players work toward becoming better at dribbling the basketball there are certain key elements they must be aware of and keep in mind at all times. Here are the 10 keys to dribbling a basketball successfully: 1. Players must stay low when they are dribbling. 2. Players must keep their head up while dribbling. 3. Players must attack their defender -
not avoid them. 4. Players must dribble with a purpose - avoid wasted movement. 5. Players must constantly work to improve their weak hand. 6. Players must protect the basketball with their body and off hand. 7. Players must work on change of pace and change of speed dribbles in order to keep the defender off balance. 8. Players must be able to change direction with their dribble to keep the defender off balance. 9. Once a player beats their defender they must: Keep their dribble out in front of them, Keep their defender behind them and, Close the gap between them.
10. Players must work constantly at improving their dribbling techniques and mechanics. Looking for more tips and advice on dribbling a basketball? Visit us today! A Convenient Way To Keep Young Athletes Hydrated (NAPSI)-Any way you slice it, watermelon can be a healthful snack, particularly when you want to make sure young athletes are getting enough liquids. Parents are often concerned about the amount of fluids their children get before, during and after sporting activities. These liquids can come in the form of water, sports drinks and fresh fruit snacks, such as slices of watermelon. As any mom or dad with a young athlete can tell you, parents of team members often take turns providing snacks for their young athletes. "Ideally, these snacks should be a fruit with a high water content," says Barbara Levine, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Nutrition in Clinical Medicine and Director, Nutrition Information Center, Weill College of Medicine of Cornell University, New York, NY. "Watermelon," says Levine, "is a favorite fruit among kids and is called the natural hydrator because it's 92 percent water. For sports activities, watermelon served in slices is easy for children and teens to eat. An inch-wide slice contains about a cup of fruit. "And watermelon is more than a delicious thirst quencher," adds Levine. "It contains important vitamins and phytochemicals for growing bodies. A two-cup
PAGE 13
serving of watermelon has 20 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin A and 25 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. It's also a source of potassium and a leader in the powerful antioxidant lycopene." Keeping children well hydrated should be a priority, especially when they are members of competing sports teams. Suzanne Nelson Steen, D.Sc., R.D., head of the Husky Sports Nutrition Services in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Washington in Seattle, offers excellent advice on the subject on the Web site www.momsteam.com. "Kids should drink on a schedule, not just when they are thirsty," says Steen. "By the time your child says he is thirsty, he is already dehydrated," she advises. She says that children should be reminded to drink five to nine ounces of water (10 to 18 half-ounce "gulps") every 20 minutes during activity and teenagers should drink more. Finally, Dr. Steen reminds parents that kids' fluid intake needs to be supervised because children do not instinctively drink enough fluids to replace water losses. With a little planning, you can help ensure that your children are well hydrated and happy.

BASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESS Basketball Rebounding is one of the most critical aspects of the game. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most overlooked when it comes to practice time. Players often take rebounding for granted thinking that if the ball comes their way, they'll grab it. Or a more common mistake is that players often think rebounding is not their job or responsibility on the court. "I'm not a rebounder" or "That's my teammates job" are phrases that are often heard amongst players. Well the truth is, basketball rebounding is every players' job and responsibility - re-
gardless of their height or position. Every player must be a rebounder on the court. To become great at basketball rebounding, players should possess the eight qualities listed below. The good news is that these qualities have nothing to do with a players' size. Instead, they have everything to do with their body position and balance, desire and aggressiveness. Eight Qualities of Basketball Rebounding 1. Pursue the basketball. Players should not stand still when the shot goes up - instead they should go aggressively after the
ball. Great rebounders always think that the rebound belongs to them. 2. Establish a good rebounding position. When the shot is taken, players must quickly determine the following details: The shot location, the arc of the ball, and where the other players are positioned on the court. Players must then move to rebound the ball. 3. Establish proper body balance. Once a player is in a good rebounding position, they should spread their feet about shoulder width apart with their knees bent slightly. In this position, players can move
side to side quickly and are also in a good jumping position. Another important point is for players to remember to stay on the balls of their feet, not flat-footed. Again, this helps them move and jump better. 4. Box out your opponent. Once a player has established a good position and is in good balance, they should then box out their opponent. This is done by getting between them and the basket as quickly as possible and then initiating contact with them using their back side. Players must be ready for contact - rebounding is the most physical aspect of the game. (continued on next page)

BASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESS (continued from previous page)
5. Possess desire and mental & physical toughness. Great rebounders have the attitude that every missed shot is their rebound. They own the boards. This attitude helps them develop an unshakable desire and aggressiveness. 6. Properly time your jump for the ball. Once players establish good position and balance, and firmly box out their opponent - they now need to jump for the ball. A mis-timed jump can cost the player a rebound. By watching the shot and then reading where it will bounce, the player
will be more capable of properly timing their jump. 7. Protect the ball after the rebound. There are several ways for players to do this: Hold the ball over their head; Chin the ball; or Hug the ball close to their body. How a player protects the ball will depend on how their coach teaches this aspect of the rebound. The main objective here is to protect the ball once it is rebounded. Don't let the opponent get it back. 8. Develop soft hands and fingertip
control. Soft hands is a term that is used to describe a players' ability to handle the basketball regardless of how hard or soft it comes at them. They seem to be able to control everything. Fingertip control allows them to tip the rebound to themselves or to a teammate. These are critical rebounding qualities that give players a huge advantage on the boards.
