It took Lane Construction Co. of Charlotte, N.C. seven years and $48.5 million dollars to design and build the remaining five bridges that completed the missing link. Some people didn’t think the project could be done. It has been called a marvel of engineering. Cutting edge construction techniques allowed the Parkway to finally be completed! Engineers had to wait until technology caught up in order to implement innovative ideas that safely finished the Missing Link. Designers also had to be very cognizant of protecting and respecting National Park topography and wildlife. Designs were included that allow animals to cross the road safely underneath bridges. The views of the Great Smoky Mountains along the Missing Link of the Parkway are breathtaking. There are unparalleled views of some of the highest mountain peaks in the Park. At any given time, you will find people lined up at the pull off points along the way admiring the majestic scenery. A drive along The Missing Link is a must for any visitors to the area.
