Colder weather is setting in and minor home repairs need to be completed as soon as possible to keep you and yours safe and warm this winter. Maybe there are a few shingles missing from your roof or cracks in your foundation, whatever it is, get the help you need to fix it and prevent the issue from becoming much worse – and costlier – later.
And it’s not just further damage from weather, these minor issues can hit your pocket in the form of utility costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver Guide, the typical U.S. family spends at least $2,200 per year on home utility bills. But those bills could be reduced by taking steps to efficiently manage your heating system, and preventing heat from escaping and cold air from getting in. Before the brunt of winter hits, make these minor repairs to make heating your house more efficient and prevent costly damage when bad weather and freezing temperatures hit.
FIND AND SEAL LEAKS Seal the air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes (“plumbing penetrations”), gaps around chimneys and recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets. Have caulk or weather stripping placed around leaky doors and windows.
INSPECT THE FOUNDATION
The foundation is the base of your home and what keeps everything level and square. Foundations naturally contract and expand with the changing ground temperatures and will, on occasion, shift or crack. If not repaired, this can cause a lot of damage to the entire house. It is hard to repair a foundation during very cold weather, so it’s very important to

schedule this as quickly as possible when any damage is discovered.
GET A CHECK-UP ON YOUR HEATING SYSTEMS Schedule a service for the heating system and make any recommended repairs. Find out what maintenance is required to keep the heating system operating efficiently throughout the winter. Replace the furnace filter once a month, or as needed.
CHECK YOUR ROOF Loose or missing shingles or tiles present the possibility of leakage, which can cause severe damage inside the home if not repaired. If you live in a snow-prone area, you especially don’t want inches of snow sitting on top of your roof and melting, turning into water that can get inside. If you need to get your roof inspected, now is the time before the weather gets worse.
The need for repair can arise at any time, but when they arise before winter it is paramount to get them fixed as soon as possible, before they get too costly and damaging. Doing so will give peace of mind as you enjoy your winter in a snug, cozy home.
