TOWN OF DANDRIDGE Settled in 1783 when the federal government surveyors mapping the territory found the spring water blended so well with their scotch whiskey, Dandridge became a bustling town with merchandise being transported by riverboat down the French Broad River (now Douglas Lake). During this period, several taverns were constructed in the town to provide the travelers with food & lodging. In 1942, the construction of Douglas Dam threatened to destroy the downtown by flood waters. Local citizens persuaded the government to construct a 1000' long, 50' high, dike to hold back the waters from Douglas Lake. Through the dedication and efforts of the citizens in maintaining the historic structures, the downtown has continued to thrive and was named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Distinctive Destination in 2011. DOUGLAS LAKE Visitors to Dandridge are always impressed with the historic preservation and the quaintness of the town. Restaurants and shops line the downtown streets and the lake makes recreation a viable option for family vacations. Guided walking tours of the historic district can be arranged for groups by contacting the Visitor’s Center.
