t’s the time of year we have all been waiting for, the 2016 Nursery/Landscape EXPO. We hope you have cleared your calendar to join us this year in Houston to receive a Texas-sized greeting at a Texas-sized event!

The TNLA staff and volunteers who work to make this the premier professional Green Industry event happen, have all done their jobs and we are all excited to have you join in. You’ll ďŹ nd an array of products and companies addressing all segments of our industry as you walk the aisles of the convention center. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with professionals from around the Lone Star State and learn about the most innovative trends including water-smart technology the industry is producing. I encourage you to take advantage of the many educational sessions EXPO has to offer and increase your professional knowledge. Catch up with old friends, make new friends, and learn about the latest and greatest, all in EXPO’s one-stop-shop.

EXPO is a celebration of the Green Industry in Texas. It has always been about bringing the top tier growers, suppliers, retailers and landscapers together. By participating in EXPO, you are supporting the Industry and whether you write orders on the show oor or laying the foundation for an ongoing professional relationship, know you are dealing with the best of the best in Texas at the Nursery/Landscape EXPO.

The theme of the 2016 EXPO is Saddle Up. We hope you are ready to Saddle Up and plan your time at EXPO to maximize your investment. You can get a head start in strategizing your EXPO journey by downloading the 2016 Electronic EXPO Program, this year’s mobile app, to create your personal EXPO Schedule, search for exhibitors and products, and view EXPO’s top notch speaker line-up. The entire Texas Nursery & Landscape Association Board of Directors and the TNLA Staff want you to take advantage of every opportunity to raise your professional standards to the highest level and enhance your business at EXPO. You must decide to keep a champion Attitude!

If you’re reading this then I’m almost positive that you are going through something either personally or professionally if not BOTH! Let’s be honest; life can sometimes be HARD! Regardless, each of has the

decision of what type of attitude we will choose! You may not be able to control “what happens to you but you can “always decide what attitude you will take towards life’s challenges! Champions decide daily and sometimes moment-by-moment to choose a winning attitude rather then one of defeat!

You must NEVER forget your WHY!

My father moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Lincoln, NE in the early 60’s because he refused to raise his family in a gang infested ghetto. He had no connections in Nebraska, no job lined up; in fact my father had only completed school up to ninth grade and was illiterate. Also consider it was during the most polarizing times in our countries history regarding race relations. How does an uneducated African American male have four out of his six kids with college degree’s, become a Pastor of a very successful church, married for over 55 years to same woman, adored by many succeed? He simply knew

what he wanted & more importantly “WHY! What’s your “Why? When you know you’re “WHY you’ll do whatever it takes to make it come to fruition! There’s a great book titled “ Start With Why and I highly recommend it!

Focus ONLY on what you CAN control

Be careful who surround yourself with

It simply makes no sense to waste time and energy focused on things you cannot control. Practicing this type of behavior leaves you dead in your tracks with an inability to move either forwards or backwards! It’s a crippling behavior that is sure to leave you frustrated and can drive you absolutely mad! When I ďŹ nd myself caught up in this type of thinking I immediately ask myself one question.... can I change what’s happening? If the answer is yes I proceed proactively looking for a resolution. If the answer is NO‌I immediately stop worrying about it! By doing this I immediately ďŹ nd myself in a more productive and peaceful state of mind which in turn improves my attitude dramatically!

I’ll never forget hearing this from an athletic Coach years ago “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future. What a powerful quote! If you associate with people who are always negative, pessimistic and never have a positive attitude; guess

what? You’ll ďŹ nd yourself being just like them with the same dark and negative future and outlook on life! Guard your inner circle closely and if there are people you need to distance yourself from do it immediately!

My former Hall of Fame College football Coach Dr. Tom Osborne of the University of Nebraska would often tell us after a bad play “Go the next Play. Meaning move on and get going! hile we’ve all heard that gardening is therapeutic and I do agree‌

Ask anyone that does landscaping, nursery sales or gardening as a profession and they’ll conďŹ rm that it’s also a ton of hard often menial and mundane work. The therapeutic aspect is still there but it sure does come at a cost... Because this work is physical, mental and at the bottom rung when we’re talking about the ďŹ nancial and or proďŹ tability spectrum; I’m of the belief that one must continually be inspired in order to stay the course and consider themselves a green industry professional. In our society there’s an old and enormous value put on the human Psyche by poets and philosophers who will all attest. “Let no one think that real gardening is a bucolic and meditative occupation. It is an insatiable passion, like everything else to which a man gives his heart.â€?- Karel Capek The word insatiable pretty much describes both my love and disdain of my life as a green industry professional.

Of course everything I’m claiming is merely my own experience and the story I’m telling in this moment. We each have our own version of why we do what we do. Whether we’ve intentionally guided our careers and lives to this point or we simply fell into what we’re doing and went with it. Sustaining our lives, our careers and our happiness is and should be our primary focus. My presentation will surely be relative and a welcomed conversation that encourages conscience thoughts and a realistic approach to horticulture, permaculture and sustainability. Everyone and their mother; Big business included is focusing on their “green story. In order for manufacturers to make money they’ve gotta pay attention to what the paying public and sector is seeking and spending their money on. The age of all things organic, locally grown, farm to table and plain old “fresh isn’t just trendy it’s effective and synonymous with making people feel good. Whether it’s factually relevant or not it’s more important than ever for green industry professionals to understand

just how they/we ourselves can market and truly create sustainable businesses where our products and/or services are environmentally friendly, people and pet friendly and truly sustainable in the way they’re made, manufactured and produced. I’ll share stories of how I grew up. The people and circumstances that affected me and how I’ve come full circle with the way that I currently operate and run my own small business. While some of my story is due to my fears around my mortality and the will being of my family. I’m also keenly aware of the damage we’re doing to our planet and needed a feel good technique that would afford me the means of assisting and selling goods and services to a clientele that is ďŹ nally becoming more conscientious with regards to so many different factors in life, outdoor aesthetics and their own well being. Everyone’s experience is unique to themselves but as someone who’s worked as a laborer, home gardener, residential and commercial landscaper, a longtime student of horticultural and experienced in building and Landscape construction...When it comes to sustainability and striving for ďŹ nancial success, I relish at the opportunity to blend what I love and am passionate about with that which will also afford the lifestyle I desire for me and my family, all while showing compassion

the marketing and popularity aspects of what I do but running a proďŹ table well run business and being efďŹ cient, creative and seeking to truly employ sustainable practices is what I believe will make or break me. (continued from page 37)

and respect for mother earth. Please understand that I’ve also worked 8 years in the municipal sector as a supervisor of landscape maintenance and I currently operate and manage a small residential nursery on the 1/3 acre property in Northern California that I call home. Only in the last couple of years did I start to think in terms of my own sustainability as a landscape professional and how ďŹ guring out how to do this locally and efďŹ ciently was where the magic happens. Granted, being a “Celebrity Landscaperâ€? helps and is great for

I’m of the belief that one of the ďŹ rst steps to becoming an authentic and believable salesman is to ďŹ rst become your own customer. Practice what you preach, and I do. My own mortality and my moral obligation to maintain my public ďŹ gure status is why I preach here spreading the good word of “Nothing lasts forever, so let’s spend forever deciding and attempting to make what we need from mostly nothing.â€?

And even with all of this I often feel like I’m just barely surviving and often wonder what the magic to my own success might continue to look like. I’ll delve deeper into this and create the space for all of who attends my presentation at TNLA to journey, join in and learn from someone who’s truly taken a career that started out as most of us have. Mowing grass and pulling weeds, to carving out my own unique niche in the green industry and I’m taking the term “sustainability to a whole new level in both business and my day to day life. Ahmed considers himself a hustler that took gardening very seriously, he hosts gardening shows for DIY Network.

My most dynamic saving grace to date is the fact that I hosted television shows and continue to produce web video that’s both entertaining as it is educational.

/FXTCJUFT Legislative Update: Phytosanitary Licensing Fee Increases -"45 :&"3

the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) was tasked with imple menting cost recovery measures for many of their subsidized programs. In April, TDA approached TNLA with a proposal to move the Phytosanitary (Phyto) CertiďŹ cate Inspections into cost recovery. Currently, TDA charges $30 per inspection visit, and the inspector can issue multiple phyto-inspection certiďŹ cates on each visit. TDA initially proposed changing the inspection fee from the $30 per inspection visit to $35 per certiďŹ cate issued. TNLA immediately voiced strong concerns about the undue burden this would

place on TNLA Members and the entire Texas Green Industry. TDA has recently approached TNLA with another proposal. If the phyto-inspection certiďŹ cates are done manually, as they currently are, the new fee would be $35 per certiďŹ cate. However, if the company uses the USDA Phytosanitary CertiďŹ cate Issuance & Tracking System (PCIT) online program, the fee would be $35 for the ďŹ rst certiďŹ cate and reduced to $10 for each additional certiďŹ cate. The use of the PCIT program helps cut down on TDA inspector’s hours ďŹ ling paperwork, which is why the use of this system will help them to reduce the cost of multiple inspections. In addition, TDA has stated they will work to establish compliance

agreements with other states, thus eliminating the need for phytocertiďŹ cates all together. However, it is unlikely that TDA will be able to secure compliance agreements with all of the states TNLA Members ship to, so that is not a ďŹ x-all. TDA ďŹ led for the rule change increasing the inspection fees in June, and a public comment period will be announced soon. It will likely run from the end of June through the end of July. Please look for information on how to voice your opinion on the fee increase from TNLA in the coming weeks. TNLA is committed to ensuring a fair and equitable solution for our Members. The next step will be seeking relief through the Legislative process next Session.

Spigellia marilandica – Indian Pink, A Jewel In The Forest by Dr. Dave Creech

I

Dr. Dave Creech is Professor Emeritus and a Regents Professor of Horticulture in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas dcreech@sfasu.edu

f there’s one plant here at SFA Gardens that generates emails, comments and praise Indian pink, Spigelia marilandica. Usually, there are two questions. What is it? Where can I get one? That’s where it gets a bit complicated. While we typically offer it at our plant sales, it’s rarely seen in box stores and most retail outlets in Texas fail to offer this jewel. It’s a long way from a retail nursery item staple. For nursery sales, peak bloom is May. Other selling points include the fact it’s a native and free of pests in the landscape and seems deer resistant at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. Bottom line: This is as reliable a returning herbaceous perennial one could hope for in our region. Once well established, Indian Pink grows as a rhizomatous clump between one and two feet high, with about a one to two foot spread. It has supple, sometimes glossy dark green foliage that persists throughout the growing season. From late spring into summer – May this year - it bears many upright, tubular, bright crimson owers with light yellow throats. The plant can be made to rebloom more vigorously if lightly pruned after the ďŹ rst owering event – blooms on new growth. The ďŹ ve-lobed tips of the owers open gradually and look like small creamcolored stars perched on red pedestals. In bloom, few plants have greater graceor charm. In a good landscape, seedlings can ďŹ nd a home and if recognized, they can be favored to expand a colony. I’ve seen Indian pink jump ten foot pathways to say hello down the trail. It’s an opportunistic shade garden warrior.

Indian Pink is one of about 50 species of mostly herbaceous perennials of the family Loganiaceae from mostly tropical and warm areas. Other related species include S. texana (syn. S. loganoides or Florida Pinkroot) and S. gentianoides (Gentian Pinkroot). Neither is in cultivation right now, but S. texana, a white-owering species, is reported to have potential as a groundcover. S. splendens is reported in Mexico and Guatemala. S hedyotidea, Priairie Pinkroot, is native to the southern and westerns parts of north central Texas and is normally found on limestone outcrops and gravelly soils; this species is even more uncommon than Indian Pink.

Further to the east in Florida and Alabama, the pale-pink-owering S. gentianoides is so rare it’s on the federal list of endangered species. Pressure from agriculture and forestry has been a main

42

threat and the plant is limited to a small number of populations in Florida and Alabama. Amanda Herschberger 2012 dissertation provides an interesting assessment of genetic variability and clonal propagation ( https://getd.libs.

My ďŹ rst memory of a colony in habitat goes back over 30 years to a lazy afternoon excursion with Lynn Lowrey near Kirbyville, Texas. We were driving one of those back FM roads in Newton County – ever see the movie Deliverance? – and we climbed a small hill, over the top and then down to a sun-lit swag with a small stream at its center. It was in that moist wet spot that Indian pink had found a home – the prettiest colony of Indian Pink one might imagine, several hundred square feet, a pure stand, and owering with gusto. In the landscape, provide a rich, humic spot with protection from the harsh western sun. Once established, the plant is very drought resistant.

For bird lovers, Indian Pink is thought to be a major nectar source for ruby-throated hummingbirds, and it has been voted one of the top ten hummingbird plants in the country by Operation Ruby Throat, an international research and education initiative based in York, South Carolina. For the herbal crowd, the genus Spigelia is considered medicinal with attributes as an antihelmintic (vermifuge), which is really handy if you’re having a bout with round, hook or tape worms. In fact, any search of the Web will ďŹ nd reams of Spigelia products touting anti-headache attributes. The only headaches we’ve had have to do with propagation and container growing. The plant is a bit tricky. Vigorous tips and soft wood taken before

owering seem to root best under intermittent mist. Indian pink is quick to damp off. Propagators should use a light mix, adjust mist intervals frequent enough to prevent wilt, and once moderately well rooted, move them to less frequent watering. The plant is now becoming more and more available through tissue culture. Indian pink strikes many as a ďŹ ne plant for the May market in Texas. The fact that most customers are clueless about the plant doesn’t help. Still, a eshed out six inch pot in heavy ower in a good presentation on the retail oor, well, it would just be hard to resist. Tack on a little point of purchase information and Indian pink in the right spot will generate its own word of mouth market later down the road.
