TNLA TAILGATE TOPICS

PLANT STRUCTURE

Objective: Participants will be able to define the different parts of a plant’s structure, including parts and systems. APPLICATION: Using a picture of a plant or a plant (such as a 4” plant) that has been removed from its soil, show the two parts of a plant. Using two plants with different root systems have participants identify the difference between taproots and fibrous root systems.

Plants are extremely diversified in size, shape, and color but for the most part they are extremely similar in structure. A flowering plant consists of two basic parts: 1. Root – normally underground 1. Shoot – portion above ground made up of stems and leaves. The shoot is made up of stems and leaves. Flowering plants are composed of two “systems”: 1. Vascular System – transports food, carbohydrates, water and nutrients. Besides working as the conductive feeding system, the vascular system also supports the plant. It can be compared to the circulatory and skeletal system of an animal. 1. Root System – has many functions including: structural support, water and nutrient absorption, and storage of the plant’s food. Taproots are the original seedling’s primary root and a fibrous root system occurs when the seedling’s primary root ceases to grow when the plant is young.

ADVOCACY REPORT TNLA Sponsors, Attend East Texas Lone Star Legislative Summit TNLA staff attended the LSLS last week and helped sponsor the conference which included several conversations on workforce including immigration, work visas, and education. In addition, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan spoke and delivered his priority agenda for the next session which includes criminal justice reform, healthcare cost reforms, and infrastructure. It was a key opportunity to engage state lawmakers on behalf of TNLA and hear directly from them about the coming legislative session.

5 ADVOCACY REPORT continued TNLA Arranges Meeting Between Turf Growers and City of Austin The city of Austin is in the midst of developing a singlefamily residential ordinance that could potentially restrict the amount of turfgrass in landscapes as well as restrict the size of irrigation systems in new developments under the banner of water conservation. Both would unfairly target green industry products and services. In a series of engagements with the City, TNLA has taken the lead and arranged a meeting with turfgrass producers, turf scientists, and industry partners to explain the many environmental, economic, and societal benefits of turf as well as the newer drought-resistant varieties. We will remain engaged with the city during this process in the hopes our efforts persuade Austin to have a fair and reasonable ordinance.

TNLA Gearing Up For Legislative Interim Hearings The Texas House and Senate are off and running with their respective interim charges, which are issues they will study in preparation for the next session. Up in the next couple of weeks will include hearings on immigration, rural workforce, unemployment benefits, taxes on services like landscaping, and more. As always the team at TNLA remains engaged with state legislators on these issues and makes sure the concerns of the green industry are considered in developing legislation. Keep an eye out for more developments over the next several months as these interim charges are studied and debated. San Antonio Enters Stage 2 Water Restrictions TNLA members should be keeping a watchful eye out as regulators across Texas are beginning to focus on prolonged drought conditions. The City of San Antonio has announced they are entering Stage 2 of their restrictions which will limit the time of day watering for customers. Green industry professionals in the San Antonio market should communicate with their customers about local drought restrictions and ensure consumers are taking a Water Smart approach. More information on the SAWS update is available here: https://www.saws.org/san-antonio-enters-stage-2watering-rules-2/ Additionally, TNLA certified professionals can obtain or re-up the Water Smart certification: https://academics.tnlaonline.org/
