TNLA TAILGATE TOPICS
REASONS FOR PRUNING
Objective: Participants will be able to correctly recognize the four main reasons for pruning and give examples of when, why, and how each type of pruning occur. APPLICATION: Pruning is the removal of plant parts to improve the plants form and growth. There are four reasons why we prune: training, to maintain plant heath, to improve the quality of flowers/fruit/foliage/stems, and to control the growth of the plant. Be sure that participants are able to differentiate between the four reasons. This includes when, why, and how each of the pruning types take place.
Training: Training by pruning is done when branch patterns, growth shape, or strength are undesirable. Most young trees and shrubs are pruned in order to remove broken, crossing or weak branches. As these trees become older, they may need to be pruned to improve their shape or for strength. Trees with a central leader (main trunk) should be pruned to eliminate branches that may compete with the central leader. When pruning for growth, branches should be removed that have a small angle of attachment to the trunk (less than 30 degrees). Branches with a wide angle of attachment should be kept (between 60 and 70 degrees) because they have a stronger attachment. Maintaining Plant Health Care: Pruning to maintain the health of a tree or shrub is often done in order to eliminate any dead, dying, or diseased wood. Insects and disease use dying wood as an entry point. It is important that pruning is done correctly and with proper technique. Unhealthy wood should be removed beyond the point of infection. Using a sterile blade a cut should be made in healthy wood and the unhealthy wood should be properly disposed. Improving the Quality of Flowers, Fruit, Foliage, or Stems: Pruning must be timed correctly in order to increase flower or fruit production. By pruning out unwanted wood, the plants energies are diverted in to the production of larger flowers, and ultimately, larger fruits. Restricting Growth: If a plant has been planted wisely its growth should not exceed the space it has been planted in. Unfortunately, not all plants were planted wisely and will need to be pruned in order to fit in their space. This includes pruning for uniformity and to keep plants looking formal.

ADVOCACY REPORT TNLA Meets with City of Dallas Environmental Commission TNLA met with Kathryn Bazan, chairwoman of the Dallas Environmental Commission, regarding the group's ongoing discussion of an ordinance on gas-powered landscape equipment. Information shared in the meeting included some of the feedback provided by Dallas-based TNLA members and the challenges they might face in being forced to switch equipment. In addition, we were able to share the comparative data looking at the longevity and cost of electric equipment vs. gaspowered. At this point, the commission has referred the ordinance development to their subcommittee on Environmental Health for consideration and the group still appears on track to deliver some sort of recommendation to Dallas City Council for consideration by September. TNLA will continue to monitor this process and share information with our affected members. Texas House Interim Charges Released Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan has released his interim charges for Texas House committees. Interim charges are issues the committees will study and conduct hearings on prior to the 2023 legislative session. As an example, TNLA will be monitoring the work on the following issues: Discussion on the efficacy of the plant pest and disease grant funding created and approved in 2021 Changes needed to the unemployment benefits system operated by the Texas Workforce Commission
Evaluation of labor shortages in Texas and possible job trainings and apprenticeship programs initiatives to help meet demand The regulation of groundwater and ways to enhance state's overall water supply Identification of obstacles employers face in partnership with educational institutions to make students career ready Study of policies impacting trucking and supply chain challenges TNLA Joins H-2B Letter to Administration; 35,000 Additional Visas to be Released! The H-2B Workforce Coalition has sent a letter to the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Labor this week and urged them to release the maximum amount of H-2B visas allowed under law. With the second half of the cap being hit, it was critical that the supplemental visas be released quickly and efficiently. Our coalition was successful in getting the Biden Administration to release 20,000 additional visas when the first half cap was hit. Now we can share that the Biden Administration has announced 35,000 supplemental H-2B visas will be released for the second half. Of these new supplemental visas, 23,500 are for returning workers with a three-year look back and 11,500 are reserved for the northern triangle countries. The addition of these visas brings the total of supplemental visas to 55,000 for 2022, a huge success for our industry. Thank you to all the companies who took the time to send a message to their elected officials on this issue.
