The latest report confirmed crapemyrtle bark scale infestation in Pennsylvania Runshi Xie, Hongmin Qin and Dr. Mengmeng Gu Runshi Xie is a Ph.D. students working in the Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M University fushe001@email.tamu.edu Dr. Hongmin Qin, Associate Professor, Department of Biology, Texas A&M University, hqin@bio.tamu.edu Dr. Mengmeng Gu, Professor/Extension Specialist, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, mgu@tamu.edu Researchers from Penn State University and USDA, Drs. Michael J. Skvarla and Scott A. Schneider recently published a report confirming new infestation of crapemyrtle bark scale (CMBS) in Pennsylvania. This report furthered the CMBS distribution to the northeastern part of United States, bringing the total number of states with CMBS infestations to 18 (Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington (EDDMapS, 2022) and Pennsylvania), in addition to Washington D.C. According to the report, CMBS was found on a mature crapemyrtle tree in Pennsylvania, Chester County, Pennsbury Township (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6b), one of the warmest regions of Pennsylvania. The insect samples were collected and identified as CMBS in the summer of 2021, however, the authors believe that the CMBS infestation might have persisted for several years, considering the severity of the infestation in question (Figure 1).

The latest report confirmed crapemyrtle bark scale infestation in Pennsylvania (cont.) This report supports previous models constructed by Wang et al., (2019), which predicted crapemyrtle bark scale can survive in more northern areas than they have been previously found in the United States, including most of Pennsylvania. In China, CMBS infestation was found in Beijing (USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 6) (Figure 2), which has a similar latitude (around 39°53’29.03” N) compared to the location of the new CMBS infestation reported in Pennsylvania. The authors also stated that since crapemyrtle is pruned back to the roots every year in colder areas of the state, scale infestations will likely be minimal due to this pruning practice. MOTOR OIL
Objective: Participants will be able to correctly identify different types of motor oils and the five functions it is design for.
APPLICATION: Describe the differences in types of motor oil and show examples of what is used by your business. When showing the types of oil used, be sure to tell why certain oil is used with certain machines/engines. Review why motor oils are used on engines and their functions.
Motor oil is a blend of base stock and additives. The additives in motor oil give it the capability to protect engines during demanding applications. The base stock comes in two different forms: 1. mineral oil refined from petroleum 2. synthetic oil Synthetic oils are not always the best oil choice. They are usually used when a machine is under demanding operating conditions or under extremely high temperatures. In most engines motor oil is designed to do the following: CLEAN: motor oil suspends dirt and contaminants in the engine so that they can be removed by the filter or drained when the oil is changed. COOL: motor oil absorbs heat from the engine and carries it away or releases it to the outside air. SEAL: because motor oil is a liquid it is able to fill in gaps between the piston rings and cylinder walls in order to create a seal for the combustion chamber and boost compression. LUBRICATE: ensures a longer life or moving parts by lowering wear and friction. PROTECT: creates a protective layer to prevent rust and deterioration.

ADVOCACY REPORT TNLA Talks H-2B Cap Relief in Washington D.C. TNLA members and staff traveled to Washington D.C. on Wednesday and joined with nearly 80 other landscape companies and state associations to urge Congress to include a H-2B cap relief measure in the next round of appropriations bills. We were encouraged by the constructive conversations we had with several key House offices as well as meeting with Senator Cornyn's team to discuss a Senate pathway to H-2B cap relief. A crucial series of votes on H-2B are expected by the middle of July on providing cap relief. In addition, our industry will need to kill potentially two bad amendments trying to restrict the H-2B program. At this point, there are 82 cosponsors of HR 3897 by Rep. Henry Cuellar, a bill that would reinstate the Returning Worker Exemption and expand the cap to a number that would grow with industry need. We want to thank Reps. Henry Cuellar, Kay Granger, Vincente Gonzalez, Kevin Brady, and Filemon Vela for cosponsoring the legislation. You can help out too by visiting the TNLA Legislative Action Center and sending a message supporting HR 3897 and the amendment to bring back RWE. https://www.votervoice.net/TNLA/Home
