LEGISLATIVE & REGULATORY UPDATES: TNLA Joins Letter to Governor Urging Withdrawal from Supplemental Unemployment As Texas and much of the nation begins to fully recover from COVID restrictions, businesses in every industry are being plagued by acute labor shortages. This is causing increasing challenges for our industry which has been fighting for more workforce for years. In response to this dramatic circumstance and with a coalition of other business organizations, TNLA successfully urged Governor Abbott to withdraw from the supplemental unemployment program that provides surplus money on top of traditional unemployment checks. Instead, we argued that the state government should look to use relief dollars in aiding families in finding work and mitigating challenges for those people returning to work. TNLA will continue to advocate the state dedicate resources to these important initiatives. TNLA Urges Governor Abbott to Add Regulatory Consistency to Special Session TNLA joined our partners in the ASSET Coalition to request Gov. Abbott add SB 14, the bill to preempt cities’ patchwork employment regulations, to the agenda of the coming special session. The Legislature is certain to be called back to Austin by the Governor for at least one, if not more, special sessions and will be limited to the items the Governor places on the “call” or agenda. SB 14 nearly passed the legislature and would have eliminated the ability for cities to create employment mandates regarding scheduling, hiring, wages, benefits, and overtime. Ensuring consistency on these regulations and affirming the authority of the state to govern these areas remains a key priority for our association.

TNLA Tailgate Topics: Plant Structure Objective: Participants will be able to define the different parts of a plant’s structure including parts and systems
APPLICATION: Using a picture of a plant or a plant (such as a 4” plant) that has been removed from its soil, show the two parts of a plant. Using two plants with different root systems have participants identify the difference between taproots and fibrous root systems. Plants are extremely diversified in size, shape, and color but for the most part they are extremely similar in structure. A flowering plant consists of two basic parts: 1. Root – normally underground 2.
Shoot – portion above ground made up of stems and leaves. The shoot is made up of stems and leaves.
Flowering plants are composed of two “systems”: 1. Vascular System – transports food, carbohydrates, water and nutrients. Besides working as the conductive feeding system, the vascular system also supports the plant. It can be compared to the circulatory and skeletal system of an animal. 2. Root System – has many functions including: structural support, water and nutrient absorption, and storage of the plant’s food. Taproots are the original seedling’s primary root and a fibrous root system occurs when the seedling’s primary root ceases to grow when the plant is young.
