TNLA TAILGATE TOPICS

SOILS Objective: Participants will be able to correctly identify different types of soils and correctly describe how water moves through a soil type. APPLICATION: After gathering different types of soils, have participants feel for each type of soil particle that composes each soil type. Put out cups of sand, silt, clay, garden soil, and potting soil and have participants guess on which type will move water through it the fastest. Then explain how water moves through soils using adhesion and cohesion.

Soil is composed of sand, silt, and clay particles. The percentage of each of theses (called separates) determines the texture of specific soil. The chart to the lower left is the traditional triangle used to classify specific soils. For example, if your soil is 25% clay, 40% sand, and 74% silt is would be classified as a silty loam. Combined with decayed organic matter, the soil separates form larger, more complex particles call soil structure. Spaces between the separates can contain air and water. The most desirable soil condition for plant root growth will contain 50% of this pore space. Water molecules first entering the soil form a film around the soil particles by electrical attraction called adhesion. As more water is applied cohesion allows the film to enlarge and fill the pore spaces. With the further addition of water gravity drains it to deeper layers. Water is absorbed by a speed measured as infiltration rate. The infiltration rate varies with soil texture and structure. For example, sand has a very fast infiltration rate and clay has a very slow infiltration rate. Depending upon the soil texture drainage is rapid at first, but decreases over time until there is a balance between drainage (gravity) and attraction (cohesion). At this point he soil is holding all water possible and it at field capacity.

ADVOCACY REPORT TH-2B Update - Amendment Up Today In Washington D.C. After hearing from TNLA members and our staff, Texas now has 3 of our 4 members on House Appropriations signed on in public support of the H-2B cap relief. Reps. Kay Granger, Tony Gonzales, and Henry Cuellar will all have a say on our effort on Friday to secure cap relief. Thank you to all of the TNLA members who have taken the time over the last year to fight for H-2B cap relief. We will update our members with the results of Friday's hearing. Dallas Commission Announces Intent to Support Anti-Gas-Powered Landscape Equipment A report to the Dallas Environmental Commission received an official recommendation to support a phased transition to electric or electric-hybrid gaspowered landscape equipment. The Commission will meet in early August to debate and approve an ordinance recommendation for the Dallas city council to consider on the issue. While the recommendation did not expressly urge for a ban on gas-powered landscape equipment, commentary from commissioners hinted at the likelihood of a proposal to ban gas-powered landscape equipment. TNLA will keep you informed as this local conversation progresses.

TUSDA Provides Update on Disaster Relief for Growers (Winter Storm Uri) Growers, specifically those who qualify for Phase 1 - who had crop insurance or NAP coverage, should take a moment to read the USDA blog on the newly named Emergency Relief Program (ERP). The blog post is a comprehensive review of the resources currently available (check the links). You can find the USDA blog post HERE: https://www.farmers.gov/blog/top6-emergency-relief-program-checklistitems-eligiblefarmers#:~:text=ERP%20covers%20losses %20to%20crops,for%20crops%20intended %20for%20grazing. As we stated earlier, many growers in Texas will be eagerly awaiting Phase 2 for producers without crop insurance or NAP coverage.
