Updates TNLA Region IV Conducts a Day of Service There is nothing better than to see a group of volunteers come together and help reshape and beautify a community’s landscape. Last week, TNLA Region IV brought together a wide variety of industry professionals and leaders for a Day Of Service at McKinney Crape Myrtle Trails at the “World Collection Park.” These valiant servants not only volunteered their time but also donated tools to help prune and shape crape myrtles along with a variety of trees and shrubs. To help kick the day off was Neil Sperry, McKinney Mayor George Fuller, and City Manager Paul Grimes. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported such a great cause!

TIMING FERTILIZER APPLICATION Objective: Participants will be able to properly identify good housekeeping tips that help create a safe, healthful, and pleasant place to work. APPLICATION: Point out the specific areas in your operation that need immediate attention and/or related experiences where better housekeeping would have made a difference. Good housekeeping is the foundation for a safe, healthful and pleasant place to work. Many accidents are caused each year by poor housekeeping. It may mean a little extra effort to keep the workplace clean, but it could prevent injury and work stoppage. Good Housekeeping Practices Include: 1. Keep materials and equipment out of aisles and passageways. Materials and equipment should also be kept off stairways. Remember: If it isn’t moving, it doesn’t belong in these places.
5
1. Keep tools in their proper place. Do not allow them to become scattered on the floor or left in/on equipment 2. Have a place to store spare parts – not in the corners. 3. Keep floors dry. Avoid spilling liquids, especially oils. Clean up all spills immediately. 4. Oily rags, old paint cans, oil containers, etc. that have contained flammable liquids are fire hazards. Dispose of them as soon as possible. 5. All broken bottles, glass, trash and scraps should be placed in proper waste containers. Place oily materials in covered metal containers. 6. Weeds and tall grass around the property should be cut. They can be a fire hazard and can hide other safety hazards. 7. Dispose of all chemical and pesticide containers properly. No dumping or rinsing in unapproved areas. 8. Clean all chemical and pesticide applicator equipment thoroughly after use. 9. Keep work area clean. 10. Failure to follow safety procedures properly or to pay attention to workplace safety could result in injury to you or your fellow workers. 11. A general rule for good housekeeping: “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

ADVOCACY REPORT TNLA Requesting Dallas-Area Landscapers Participate in Survey In light of the City of Dallas' continued effort to work on an ordinance to impact the use of gas-powered equipment, TNLA is asking all Dallas-area contractors to respond to our survey collecting use and interest data. The City staff have stated they intend to consider industry stakeholder input and TNLA needs your firm to participate in order to fight on behalf of our industry. Use your voice to join the debate: https://www.votervoice.net/TNLA/Surveys/7534/Respond City of Austin Conducts Public Meeting on New Landscape & Irrigation Ordinance The City of Austin conducted a public meeting for interested parties on the development of their new ordinance for irrigation and landscaping on single family residential developments. City staff discussed the possibility of limiting turfgrass, restricting to an approved plant list, requiring landscape plans submitted to the city, limiting the size of irrigation systems, requiring pressureregulated components, and enhanced inspections. The city will conduct another round of public meetings in April and then have a final round of public comment once they have published language. TNLA PAC Sees Success in Texas Primaries TNLA Political Action Committee, the political arm of our association, endorsed a bipartisan slate of candidates for the primaries who support the green industry. Collectively, TNLA PAC contributed over $30,000 in the last couple of months to state-level candidates across Texas. Every TNLA PAC-endorsed candidate either won their race outright or took a significant lead into a runoff on Election Day. We appreciate all of the TNLA members who contributed to the PAC last year and enabled us to have such a strong primary season. Our PAC will continue to wade into the fight on behalf of the green industry and provide strength to our political voice.
