Horticulture Scholarship

The Texas Nursery & Landscape Association Foundation established a scholarship program for students interested in the field of Horticulture

The 2023 2024 Texas Nursery & Landscape Association Foundation Horticulture Scholarship program has begun. If you are a deserving student or know of one, interested in this field of study, please go to the following website for more details:

The DEADLINE for completing online applications for the 2023-2024 school year is December 15, 2022. Only electronic applications using the website above will be accepted.

All scholarship applicants should carefully review the program requirements as explained on the website, and then submit their application, letters of referral, and transcripts by the deadline. The Foundation Trustees have stressed the importance of having good personal references accompany the scholarship application form many times, it is the personal references that help the Trustees decide between two deserving students.

BLEEDING AND NOSEBLEEDS

Objective: Participants will be able to correctly control bleeding and nosebleeds using proper techniques.

APPLICATION: Demonstrate proper way to care for a major open wound using pressure, elevation, and pressure points. Demonstrate proper way to stop a nosebleed using several techniques. Have participants correctly demonstrate these methods.

Major open wounds: 1 2. 3.

Control bleeding by placing a clean covering over the wound and applying pressure

If no other injury is involved, elevate wound higher than the heart.

If the bleeding cannot be controlled, apply pressure to a pressure point.

It is recommended not to apply a tourniquet unless you have been specially trained in this first aid procedure. 1. 2

Call 911 or transport the victim to the emergency room. Wash hands immediately after completing care

Nosebleed (not as serious): 1 2 3 4

Have victim sit down, lean forward and pinch nostrils together

OR, apply ice pack to the bridge of the nose

OR, put pressure on the upper lip just below the nose ALWAYS, try to keep blood from draining back into the mouth.

Extreme caution should be used when caring for an open wound or nosebleed and the following steps should be followed:

Avoid direct contact with blood. Use latex or rubber gloves when involved with body fluids of another person.

Be sure to cover open cuts or scrapes that you have.

Avoid eating, rubbing your eyes or nose and drinking after giving first aid.

Wash your hands immediately after providing care.

ADVOCACY REPORT

Save the Date: TNLA Legislative Day February 23rd

Plan to join members of TNLA from across the state as we march on the Texas Capitol on February 23rd. TNLA will provide a breakfast briefing on the policy issues most important to the green industry and a full day of meetings with legislators and staff. Attendees should plan to arrive on the evening of Feb. 22nd for an event reception and networking opportunity Check the TNLA website on Oct 14th for hotel block information and more details

TDA Announces Plans for Rule Review

The Texas Department of Agriculture has announced they are doing a routine review and re adoption of all pesticide rules, agriculture hazard communication rules, nursery floral rules, quarantine rules, and noxious plants rules. The agency plans to post its period of official comment for stakeholders to suggest changes to the rules in October and provide 30 days of the official comment period. TNLA will notify our members of proposed changes to these chapters

Register to Vote- Deadline Oct. 11th

All TNLA members should be active participants in the electoral process. It is a key step in being a legitimate stakeholder in the legislative and regulatory arena. Please register to vote by Oct. 11th for the general election coming up in November.
