P
Narodni parki so v poldrugem stoletju svojega razvoja

V tnp že vrsto let pripravljamo pestro paleto prireditev in dogodkov z enim samim ciljem – spoznati, doživeti in razumeti naš Triglavski narodni park. V letu, ki ga zaznamuje 30-letnica zakonske ustano-
The world’s first national park, the great Yellowstone, was established in the usa back in 1872 for the benefit and enjoyment of people. But, is it not true that national parks are, by definition, areas of protected nature? What is then the role of people who live in a park or visit it? Over a period of more than 150 years, national parks have taken the idea of nature protection and brought it closer to people, in a direct and genuine way. The same holds true for Triglav National Park, which in
2011 celebrates 30 years since nearly all the territory of the Julian Alps in Slovenia was proclaimed national park. Nature protection is a commitment of a mature society and is not always easy to understand and abide by. At Triglav National Park we wish that all people, residents and visitors of the National Park alike, would learn about the park, experience it, and comprehend its underlying aims and objectives. For many years now, tnp Authority has been organizing a diverse range of events with a single goal in mind, to help people explore, experience and understand Triglav National Park. In the year that marks 30 years of the Park’s proclamation, we invite you to join us in the events that will be held at various venues within the Park and the Park’s Information Centres. They will, we are certain, add value and depth to your experience and understanding of Triglav National Park. •

O Triglavskem narodnem parku
About Triglav National Park
y
Triglav National Park (tnp) is Slovenia’s only national park. Its name derives from Triglav, which not only stands in the middle of the protected area but is also the highest summit of the Julian Alps and in Slovenia. The etymology of the word ‘Triglav’ is unclear. If we ignore that the word might have originated from the language of old Celts who used a similar word to describe highlands, we are left with two possibilities: Triglav may either be the name of a vicious ancient god who smashed heads and bore no obvious connection with the numeral three, or else it may refer to three peaks that were, according to folk etymology, the residence of the mythical three-headed dragon Triglav. Today, Triglav is considered the symbol of Slovenia and its stylized image appears on Slovenia’s flag and coat-of-arms. tnp occupies an area in the south-eastern part of the Alps massif. It extends along the Italian border and close to the Austrian border in the north-west of Slovenia. The total area of the park is approximately 83,982 hectares, or 4 percent of Slovenia’s total surface area. The principal task of the Triglav National Park Public Institution is the protection of the nature and typical cultural landscape of the Julian Alps, but it also carries out specialist and research tasks. •
1981—2011
30 let od zakonske ustanovitve tnp 30 Years Since The Promulgation of tnp Maja 1981 je Triglavski narodni park dobil svoj zakon, s katerim je bil ustanovljen.
y
In May 1981 Triglav National Park received its promulgation act. The tnp Act laid down the primary objectives and aims of the establishment of the park, the outer boundaries of the protected area, protection zones and regimes. Prior to 1981, the applicable document was the Decree promulgating the Triglav Lakes Valley as the Triglav National Park in a total surface area of 2,000 hectares (passed in 1961). The 30th anniversary will be the subject of all events organized by tnp in 2011, with the central celebration held on 28 May 2011 at 20:00 at the Bled Festival Hall. •
ALPSKA KONVENCIJA
Okvir in spodbuda za sodelovanje
THE ALPINE CONVENTION
y
The Alpine Convention – A New Hope for the Alps. The slogan aptly summarizes the high expectations held by the initiators of the Convention. Signed in 1991 in Salzburg, the Alpine Convention is a binding international agreement on the protection of the Alps and sustainable development within the Alpine Space. The idea of taking measures to preserve the outstanding natural, cultural, language, and landscape diversity of the Alps was conceived and continues to grow as a result of: the depopulation and the abandonment of settlements; the deterioration of living conditions of indigenous populations; the negative effects of mass tourism on the loss of landscape and cultural identity; and the increasing pressure from motorized transport. •

ALPSKI KOZOROG ALPINE IBEX

Varstvo in upravljanje prostoživečih živali v tnp tnp Wildlife Management
Preživeli so le v Gran Paradisu v Italiji.
Preživele so le posamezne živali.
Koza navadno skoti enega do dva mladiča. Življenjska doba kozorogov je do 17 let. Kozorogov življenjski prostor so odprti predeli visokogorja nad gozdno mejo. Pozimi se spustijo tudi niže do gozdov. V skalnem svetu so neverjetno gibčni in spretni. Prehranjujejo se na gorskih
Visitors to the mountains of tnp often come across the alpine ibex. The animal is not afraid of human presence which is why the species was nearly exterminated from the Alps in the mid-19th century. The only surviving herd was found in Gran Paradiso, Italy, and from there the ibex were reintroduced to the Julian Alps in 1964. The first 15 animals of both sexes were released to the Zadnjica valley in Trenta. Today, these majestic friendly animals reside at the Kriški podi plateau, near Sovatna and Pihavec, along the ridge of Lepa Špica and above the Bavšica valley. The Alpine ibex is a strong, sturdy animal. Both male and female ibexes have horns although those of the male are substantially larger and stronger, and ribbed at front. The ibex has a brownish grey coloring in the summer which changes during the winter months a yellowish-gray. The male ibex can reach a weight of 100 kg, whereas the females are only half the size. Ibexes live in herds although males typically go their own ways and only join a herd during rut, in December and January. A female ibex gives birth to one or two kids. The life span of an ibex is up to 17 years. Its habitat is open areas above the tree line. In the winter, the animals descend to the forest area. Ibexes are extremely agile and skilled climbers. They are strictly
herbivorous and survive on a diet of grass, herbs, and moss; in winter months, they also feed on conifers and broadleaves. The ibex has no natural enemies. It is, however, susceptible to chamois scabies, a skin parasite disease which is always fatal. The disease that is only contracted by chamois and ibexes was the cause of extinction of the chamois herd that was introduced to the Ljubelj pass area at the end of the 19th century. Only several animals survived. Are the “Triglav” ibex about to suffer a similar fate? The 1998 count carried out in the national hunting grounds Triglav showed 364 animals, whereas in 2005 the number was a low 136. Scientists are of mixed opinions on whether reintroduction of the ibex was a good decision. Namely, it is a question whether it is ethically and biologically sensible to introduce the ibex to the areas where chamois scabies is of constant presence. •
PLANŠARSTVO V BOHINJU DAIRY FARMING IN BOHINJ Jože Mihelič
Vzgoja in izobraževanje v tnp tnp Education and Training

Due to long winters and lack of arable land, dairy farming was the pillar of agriculture in Bohinj for centuries. As a result, Bohinj has evolved into the centre of dairy farming. The area boasts the highest
number, and density, of alps. Although the areas above the tree line are rocky and not favourable for grazing, the highest Bohinj pastures were found at an altitude of nearly 2000 m, which is exceptional for the area of the Julian Alps (Planina Ogradi, Zgornji Tosc). The people of Bohinj have perfected their dairy farming system by moving the cattle from early spring to late autumn up from the low-lying hay meadows, mid-altitude alps to high-altitude pasturelands, and back. Cattle stayed on the Uskovnica alp until Christmas. Individual dairy farming, with each farmer having a shed on the pasture, was preserved till the 20th century. The first collective cheese dairies were set up at the initiative of Janez Krstnik Mesar (1832–1895), Bohinjska Bistrica priest, a deputy to the provincial assembly, and the initiator of the economic and cultural revival of Bohinj. Before the first cheese dairy was founded in 1873, farmers processed milk by themselves, largely to butter, and sold it in large quantities to Trieste. The arrival of cheese-maker Tomas Hitz of Switzerland changed that and marked the birth of the Bohinj cheese, which resembled the Swiss Emmental in the way it was made. The cheese-making tradition in Bohinj survived the aftermath of wwi and wwii and 90 percent of cattle was still herded to mountain alps in 1958. The sales of Bohinj cheese flourished, bringing the locals additional income. •

so nasprotni.
she left the mountains and went with him to the valley. They got married and soon she gave birth to a baby boy. One day, seeing that a severe storm was brewing, the fairy went onto the field and reaped the crops so that her family would at least have fodder to feed the animals. When her husband saw what she had done, he got very angry and called her krivopetnica. Soon, the storm enraged and devastated the fields. But the white fairy was so sad that she left her husband and son and returned to the mountains. When the little boy grew up, he became one of the famous Trenta hunters. He fell in love with Ančca, a local publican’s daughter. He would bring her wonderful flowers which the fairies picked for him. However, rich

Great yellow gentian is a species native to subalpine areas. It is a break from the norm within its genus because of its size (the plants can grow up to one metre tall) and whorls of yellow flowers. The leaves are light green, broad lanceollate to elliptic. Two gentian sub-species thrive in Slovenia: Gentiana lutea ssp. Symphyandra, and Gentiana lutea ssp. vardijanii. In the first plant, the pistils are fused into one, and in the second subspecies the pistils are free. Great yellow gentian favours sunny slopes and in Triglav National Park it thrives on sunny grasslands which are protected from overgrowing by grazing and mowing. It shows a preference for slightly moist, nitrogen-low soils. Cattle stay away from the gentian, much like the poisonous hellebore. At first glance, the hellebore resembles the yellow gentian, especially when the two are not in bloom. In the past yellow gentians were picked for their healing properties. The bitter properties residing in the root are known to stimulate the gall bladder and digestive system. Inexperienced herb gatherers sometimes mistakenly picked the hellebore, the effects of which were far from benevolent. The most commonly used part of the great yellow gentian is its roots. As the whole plants is destroyed in the process, this led to a significant decrease in the number of plants, although today the yellow gentian is also threatened by the abandonment of grazing and mowing. The species has been protected since 1922 and is classified as vulnerable in the Red List of Threatened Species. •
KRIVOPETNICE IN ZLATOROG KRIVOPETNICE & ZLATOROG Alenka Hace
Info središče tnp Dom Trenta tnp Info Centre Dom Trenta
V gorah so nekoč prebivale bele žene – krivopetnice. Bele žene so bile dobrotnice, ob rojstvu so prihajale v hišo ter podarjale mir, srečo in zdravje. Ker so imele naprej obrnjene pete, so jim rekli “krivopetnice ”.
y
Once upon a time the mountains of Trenta were home to kindly-disposed white fairies. They were called krivopetnice (Twisted-Foot Fairies) because their feet were inverted with their toes pointed backwards. Upon the birth of a baby, they would come to the house offering their gifts of peace, happiness and health. The fairies were also the protectors of Zlatorog, a white-horned chamois with magical powers. If he was shot, a Triglav Flower would spring up from its blood. Zlatorog would eat the wonder-working flower and his life force would be renewed in an instant. People believed that Zlatorog’s golden horns were the key to the immense treasure hidden in the mountaintop garden. It so happened that a shepherd from Trenta fell strongly in love with one of the white fairies. She loved him back but only when he had promised never to call her krivopetnica,
Venetian merchants excited the girl’s greed with their tales. She demanded that the hunter bring her the golden horns of the magical buck and the entire treasure Zlatorog guarded. To fulfill the wishes of his beloved, the hunter stalked Zlatorog and shot him eventually. When the Triglav rose grew from its blood, however, Zlatorog recovered his strength. His shining horns blinded the terrified hunter so that he slipped on a rock and fell into a precipice. The next morning the valley was hit by a violent storm. Ančca and her friend Jerca were watching the violent river from the bridge and saw the corpse of the hunter floating in it. Struck by despair and sadness, Jerca, who secretly loved the hunter dearly, jumped into the river. Zlatorog and the white fairies left the area for good but only after Zlatorog had ravaged and destroyed all the beautiful mountain meadows, leaving nothing but a few lakes and some charming mountain flowers behind. •

Ko izbiramo turo moramo biti predvsem iskreni do sebe.

When choosing a mountain tour, you must first and foremost be honest with yourself. It is key that the fitness and the overall physical condition of the mountaineer suit the difficulty level of the tour. And only if you answer the above question honestly and with a certain amount of self-criticism, you will enjoy the tour and avoid any potential problems that might arise if you overestimate your capabilities and underestimate the mountains you plan to climb. This will reduce the level of subjective risk to the minimum and although we may not be able to eliminate the objective threat, we reduce it through careful planning and collecting sufficient information from a variety of sources. Make sure you exercise a certain degree of caution when collecting information from various Internet forums and blogs as the accounts published are subjective and do not necessarily reflect the real situation. Pay special attention to the information provided concerning the huts, lodges, and bivouacs along the chosen route as these are the only source of shelter in case of trouble. When you know enough about the tour, it is time to take a critical look at the climbing gear that will be needed. A comfortably big back-
pack that contains a sufficient supply of liquid and food to cater the mountaineer’s daily needs; a change of clothes including a hat and pair of gloves; good shoes and technical equipment (helmet, harness, self-belaying kit, ice-pick, and crampons) are crucial on high-altitude tours even in summer as parts of the trail may still be covered in snow patches. It is, of course, of utmost importance that you can use the above listed technical climbing gear correctly and at the right time. If you have doubts when planning the route or using the equipment, the best solution is to find a park guide who will adjust the route to your capabilities and wishes. •

From an altitude of 1800 m upwards snowfall can be expected throughout the year, and is quite common on Kredarica even in summer months. •

Zato v tnp občutimo blage primorske – submediteranske in ostre gorske – alpske vplive.

Climatic changes and characteristics in the area of tnp occur due to: • altitude differences between the valley floors and mountain peaks, • diverse exposure, and • proximity to the sea.
4 Odpadke odnesimo s seboj.

Respect the customs and traditions of the people who live in the park. Do not make any noise so as not to disturb the wildlife, park inhabitants and other visitors. Mountains flowers are most beautiful where they grow; do not pick them.
4 Leave nothing but footprints behind. 5 Dogs should be kept on a leash. 6 Park trails are intended for hikers, and cycling along the trails is not permitted. 7 Follow the waymarks and other official signs of the Mountain Association of Slovenia as well as signs on information posts along the trails. 8 Leave vehicles in designated places. •
OBISKOVALCI S POSEBNIMI POTREBAMI SPECIAL NEEDS VISITORS S pomočjo zemljevida v osrednjem delu vodnika vam predstavljamo dostopnost in urejenost parkovne infrastrukture z vidika funkcionalno oviranih oseb.

In the Julian Alps Rado Kočevar
Je eden naših najuspešnejših povojnih alpinistov. Kljub častitljivi starosti 82 let je še danes športno zelo dejaven kolesar, smučar in planinec. Vedno nasmejani gospod je velik ljubitelj narave, živi v Kranjski Gori. One of Slovenia's most successful after-war alpinists. Despite a respectable age of 82, he is an active cyclist, skier and mountaineer. Rado Kočevar, famous for a big smile that never leaves his face, and his love of nature, lives in Kranjska Gora.
K
Novi, vedno težji vzponi so sledili poleti in pozimi. Vedno nova doživetja. Leto pozneje sem ponovil vse klasične smeri v severni triglavski steni.
Podobno so ta gorski svet občudovali moji spremljevalci. Povsod lepa narava, posebnosti in privlačnosti, in vendar…

When I first took in the fresh breeze that blew in our face, cooling the sweating body on the way through the Vrata valley towards the Aljažev dom hut, I had just turned 18. I had set off to climb Triglav, which is today the ultimate destination of every Slovene and every foreign mountaineer who comes to Slovenia. The evening in Vrata vas spectacular: although the hut itself was packed, there was plenty of space outside. And the view of the Triglav North Face – magnificent. It was like nothing I had ever seen. The following day we climbed the Face and stepped on the top of Triglav. Climbing in the majestic North Face, the views of the wild mountains – it was a powerful new experience that never lost its appeal … The summer of 1945. And I came back, year after year. Making other, more and more difficult, ascents in summer and winter. Each ascent brought new experience. A year later I repeated all the classical routes in the Triglav North Face. Two years later, I climbed the Jug Pillar and the Skala Route in snow and ice, and many others. In summer I climbed to Travnik, Jalovec, Široka Peč, Zadnji Prisojnik – Grade
6 routes. Living unforgettable climbing accounts in majestic rocks is a gift of unique nature. The mountains cast a similar spell on my companions, many of them from abroad. - I remember the Swiss team I led from Tamar to Lake Bohinj, and the English mountaineers who ski toured from Vogel to Kredarica and the Krma valley. They said: “The beauty of this area surpasses the descriptions made by J. Kugy (who spread the fame of our national park across the world) in his book on the Julians.” Certainly, I also visited other parts of the Alps: Wilder Kaiser, Wetterstein, Grossglockner, the Dolomites and Western Alps. And national parks. Wherever I went, I found beautiful nature, with plenty of peculiar features and attractions, and yet … It is to the unique mountains of Triglav National Park that I love to return now just as much as 65 years ago. Today as a mountaineer, skier or cyclist. But each time reliving the pristine appeal and charm of the first day, which will remain imprinted in my memory forever. I hope its nature will remain as it is, for the future generations to join in the admiration. •
