Za obiskovalce narodnega parka For national park visitors

VAŠ KORAK JE POMEMBEN. NE ZAHTEVA VELIKO, POMENI OGROMNO.

YOUR STEP MATTERS. IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH, BUT MAKES A GREAT DIFFERENCE.

Le-ta naj bo enkratna in neponovljiva. We hope that the paths you take in Triglav National Park will leave you with lasting memories and encourage you to come back again, for another story, just as exciting and unique as this one.

Svoje vozilo pustite na označenih parkiriščih. Na območju parka jih je dovolj. Ostre podnebne razmere, mlada in plitva prst ter krušljiva apnenčasta skala vsako poletje pogojujejo rast alpske flore. Vegetacija ob planinskih in drugih poteh je prilagojena negostoljubnim razmeram gorskega sveta. Hoja zunaj poti ni priporočljiva - naravovarstveni, upravljavski in estetski vidik obiskovanja občutljivega gorskega območja zahteva pozornega obiskovalca, ki spoštuje krhkost življenja v gorah.

Please leave your vehicle in one of the many designated car parks.

Priporočamo, da hodite po označenih poteh. Ne povzročajte hrupa. Živali vam bodo hvaležne. Stay on the trails. Keep your noise level down and avoid disturbing the animals.

Spoštujte življenjski prostor rastlin in živali. Respect the habitats of plants and animals. Admire them, but make sure your presence does not disturb their lives, as unique and magical as yours.

Harsh climate, young and shallow soil, and crumbly limestone rocks foster the growth of Alpine flora. The sturdy vegetation along mountain and other trails is adapted to the demanding conditions of this highaltitude terrain. Attentive visitors who appreciate and respect the sensitive and fragile mountain environment observe the nature conservation, management, and aesthetic guidelines of mountain visitation and refrain from walking outside designated paths.

Jasne noči, posute z zvezdami, doživljajte na klopeh planinskih koč, zavetišč in bivakov. Taborjenje in bivakiranje zunaj za to določenih mest ni dovoljeno. Enjoy clear starry nights from a bench outside the mountain huts and lodges, shelters and bivouacs. Camping or bivouacking outside designated areas is not permitted.

Be considerate visitors who take nothing except for memories and data stored on memory sticks.

U

The code of conduct for protected area visitors is well accepted as it will help the national park achieve its primary objective – to preserve the exceptional nature of this priceless mountain area for the generations to come. The rules and recommendations considering the code of conduct in national parks are of key importance in protected areas worldwide: to protect and conserve exceptional, pristine and unique nature’s phenomena and preserve them for the future generations. A large majority of Triglav National Park visitors abide by these rules.•

The magnificent summits of Triglav National Park are a feast for the eyes and a challenge for mountaineers. They are separated by valleys rich in forests and crystal-clear waters. The park abounds in water sources. Nearly every valley has a stream, or a river, which is and has always been the lifeline and pulse of Alpine villages. Today these valleys are popular with tourists who are drawn here by the diversity of the rivers’ hydrological and geomorphological forms and the promise of beautiful and pleasantly cool environment (in summer). Park trails in various parts of the national park are designed to inform visitors about specific features of these valleys. Although varying in length and difficulty, all trails have one thing in common: besides magnificent views, they show an attentive visitor nature’s many tiny miracles. If you wish to see and experience them, set off into deep forests and pleasantly cool shade of Alpine rivers on foot. Park trails are generally of easy to moderate difficulty. When choosing your trail, consider the duration as the hike may take from one hour to a whole day. •

eličastni vrhovi Triglavskega narodnega parka so paša za oči in izziv za hribolazce. Povezujejo jih globoke doline, bogate z gozdovi in kristalno čisto vodo. Številne izmed teh dolin so danes priljubljene izletniške točke, saj so reke ustvarile čudovite površinske hidrogeomorfološke oblike, ki privabljajo lepote in (v poletni vročini) hladu željne obiskovalce. Parkovne poti na različnih delih narodnega parka so namenjene spoznavanju posebnosti teh dolin. Raznovrstne v dolžini in zahtevnosti imajo skupno lastnost – poleg veličastnih razgledov pozornemu obiskovalcu ponujajo drobna čudesa narave. Parkovne poti so načeloma nezahtevne (lahke) pohodniške poti.

HEALTH – when venturing on a tour, make sure it is suitable to your physical and mental fitness. Also, carry an adequate supply of liquid.

Na zavarovanih plezalnih poteh uporabljajte samovarovalne komplete, plezalne pasove in čelade, ter primerno obutev.

PATHS – gravel increases the possibility of slipping, in particular in exposed places and in wet conditions. Demanding secured routes require the use of self-belaying kits, harnesses and helmets, as well as suitable climbing footwear.

OPREMA – uporabljajte le opremo namenjeno za hojo v gore. Obujte primerne planinske čevlje, ki segajo čez gleženj.

EQUIPMENT – only use mountaineering equipment. Wear good quality high mountaineering boots with sturdy soles.

Triglav – med mitom in resničnostjo Triglav – Between Myth and Reality Janez Bizjak

T

riglav, najvišji in najmogočnejši nad viharnim morjem vrhov, nažaganih grebenov in globoko vrezanih dolin!

Kdor želi poslušati, kako in kje tišina šepeta, kdor hoče sanjati resničnost, gledati popolnost, razumeti neskončnost, osvežiti duha in napolniti svoje energijske zaloge, pa naj stopi v tempelj lepote, v Vrata, tja v odmaknjeno zadnjo krnico tik pod severno triglavsko steno. Svete gore so nedotakljive. Z nekritičnim poveličevanjem smo svojo namišljeno sveto goro in zlagani narodni simbol izničili v karikaturo iz železnih klinov in varovalnih jeklenic.

Triglav, Slovenia’s highest and mightiest summit, rises above the storm-tossed sea of mountain peaks, serrated ridges and deeply entrenched valleys. The greatest of

the great, it is most magnificent when viewed from afar. A giant that you cannot miss. A timeless reminder of the creation and re-creation of the Earth that dominates the country’s north-east horizon, Triglav towers above the last remains of crystal waters in the Alps like a sentinel keeping watch over the charming perfection and uniqueness of nature that does not come with a price tag but infinite value. Because of its symbolic value, the mountain is shrouded in myths and legends. Originally it was called Terglou, and not Triglav (“threeheaded”), but some people, unfamiliar with the blurred symbolism of the trinity, still continue to look for its three heads. From afar, or above, Triglav is a tall pyramid that resembles a triangular-shaped buckwheat seed. At the hub of three ridges rising from the mountain’s western, eastern and southern sides is its summit, piercing the sky like a cosmic lighthouse. The symbolism of Triglav is encoded in the unity of three worlds: the lower (past), middle (present), and upper (future) world. The most beautiful things are

found in silence. Those who seek pristine Triglav should not climb to its top. Instead, look for other places with magnificent views of Slovenia’s holy mountain: the plateaus of Dolenjska and Notranjska, the plains of Gorenjska, Sorška planina, Vogel, Bohinj, or Dovška Baba. Take time to absorb the image of the giant on the horizon. If you want to hear the whispers of silence, dream about reality, admire perfection, understand infinity, reawaken your spirit, and restore your depleted energy reserves, then you should enter the temple of beauty, the Vrata Valley, to the cirque under the Triglav North Face. Triglav is called “holy mountain” by some – mostly those who do not know what this means. Holy mountains are untouchable. Every mountain nation has one. According to ancient tales, a holy mountain is a temple, the centre of the world, a place where the earth meets the sky. They are not to be climbed, just revered from beneath or afar. Alas, excessive glorification has desecrated Triglav, our imaginary holy mountain and a pseudo national symbol, and turned it into a

spiked caricature of iron bolts and steel ropes. What are the benefits of the overcrowding and noise on the Triglav ridge, competitions of all sorts of endurance, and obsessive trafficking in alcoholic beverages on the top of the mountain? Official bans aside, Triglav is under siege from aero taxis and the deafening sound of helicopters with cameramen filming those who still walk to its top. •

On the first day, hikers walk across the mountain pastures, through lush forests and the Valley of the Triglav Lakes. The actual ascent of the summit is scheduled for the early morning of the second day. Descend down the southern face of the mighty giant towards Bohinj. Stops along the way for a tasting and purchase of dairy products. Guided tours available: every Monday from June to September at  a.m. Trenta – -day – Retracing the steps of the Trenta mountain guides – extremely popular for its historical highlights and beautiful landscape. Narava brez meja: naravni park Julijsko predgorje Nature without borders: Prealpi Giulie Nature Park

The Julian Prealps Nature Park is a long-term partner of Triglav National Park. The parks form the Transboundary Ecoregion Julian Alps, which has been awarded europarc Federation’s European Charter for Suainable Tourism in Protected Areas.

N

Vsaka info toÄ?ka opisuje vsaj eno tipiÄ?no znaÄ?ilnost zavarovanega obmoÄ?ja in vam ponuja dragocena doĹživetja.

Close to Triglav National Park, on the Italian side of the border, there’s another jewel of natural beauty: the Prealpi Giulie (Julian Prealps) Nature Park. Encompassing a total of nearly ď™„ď™ƒď™ƒ km2 of long valleys, green forests, clear waters and rocky peaks, the park is easy to reach from the Triglav area. Here, a multitude of trails lead to the most important attractions of the protected area: from the highest point, Canin (ď™…,ď™ˆď™‹ď™‰ m), from which, on clear days, you can admire the shining roofs of the bell towers of Venice, down to the lowest place, Povici (ď™†ď™ƒď™ƒ m), where in summer you can soak your feet (or more) in the cool and clean waters of the Resia creek. As you walk along these paths, you will spot a myriad of colourful owers and, in the silent mornings or evenings, look for and meet deer and chamois. The visitors’ centre in Prato di Resia makes for an excellent start of your visit. There you will learn about the protected area and its main features. After exploring the centre’s displays and models, interactive games and temporary exhibitions, you will begin to fully appreciate the park’s diversity, and you will want to go and learn as much as you can about this fascinating area. The sta at the visitors’ centre will be pleased to answer any question you might have concerning the area and its inhabitants.

You will also ďŹ nd info points in all the other municipalities of the park: Chiusaforte, Lusevera, Moggio Udinese, Resiutta, and Venzone. Every info point presents a speciďŹ c characteristic of the protected area, and offers you a special experience to take back home. You will never forget the walk in the karstic landscape of the Canin plateau, which will make you feel like you have landed on another planet, or an underground excursion in search of the Goriuda waterfall. And if you want to rest and enjoy the valleys, there is easy hiking and good local food. Follow the bear’s footsteps in Lusevera, on the Valle Musi nature trail, after feasting on “stakâ€? (mashed beans and potatoes) in one of the tiny lovely mountain huts, or take your time to enjoy the medieval atmosphere of Venzone while enjoying a glass of Friulian wine over some delicious local salami and cheese. Last but not least: don’t forget to join in one of the many summer feasts in the valley of Resia. Here you’ll listen to stunning music and learn magical dances, searching for the mysterious Resian garlic. Come and visit Prealpi Giulie Nature Park - biodiversity at its best. •

T R I GLAV NATI ONAL PAR K

mag.

Imamo odgovorno nalogo varovati čudoviti in neodkriti svet divjih, naravno ohranjenih rek, izjemnih gozdov, zavarovanih območij in morja. Z veseljem in ponosom sem skupaj s svojo dragoceno ekipo sodelavcev prevzel odgovorno nalogo uresničevanja vizije, poslanstva in nalog WWF v tej regiji in tudi doma, v Sloveniji. Kaj delamo v Sloveniji? Zelo pomemben je naš program »Save the Alpine rivers«, s katerim želimo v petih letih, prav v času naslednjega predsedovanja Slovenije Alpski konvenciji, doseči zavarovanje še naravno ohranjenih alpskih rek s pritoki in uveljaviti modele trajnostnega umeščanja objektov za obnovljive vire energije.

WORLD WILDLIFE FUND ENHANCES ITS PRESENCE IN SLOVENIA AND ITS ALPS WWF is one of the world’s leading conservation NGOs. Established in 1961, WWF now operates regional offices and national initiatives in over 100 countries worldwide. It safeguards the living planet with an aim to stop the degradation of the natural environment. The WWF logo, the black-and-white panda, has been globally recognized as the symbol of the organisation and nature conservation. WWF Adria is the organisation’s programme office that operates in eight countries spanning from Slovenia over the Dinaric Arc to the Adriatic Sea. We work to protect the wonderful and undiscovered world of untamed rivers, majestic forests, protected areas, and the sea. Plant and animal species, habitats and people form a mosaic that we have been entrusted to safeguard. WWF Adria specialises in nature conservation, sustainable management of natural resources, climate change and pollution. We work for the good of nature and people.

Our fantastic team and I are proud to have taken on the responsible task of implementing the vision, mission and objectives of WWF in the region and in Slovenia. What does WWF do in Slovenia? There are no pandas here, and no gorillas. Luckily, Slovenia is a treasure chest of conserved nature. Our main focus is on the parks, the remains of preserved watercourses, e.g. the upper course of the Soča River and its tributaries and the entire Mura River; large predators and birds of prey; sustainable fisheries; and climate change. Particularly worth mentioning is WWF’s “Save the Alpine Rivers” programme. After next five years during Slovenia’s next presidency of the Alpine Convention, this programme aims to protect other natural Alpine rivers and their tributaries and implement sustainable placement of renewable energy generation objects. Our programme “Protected Areas for Nature and People” helps nature parks to recognise the benefits which protected areas bring to nature and people, ensure better involvement of stakeholders in park management, and create good practice in sustainable tourism in protected areas. WWF Adria also participates in the Alpine Convention Days and the International Wild Flower Festival in Bohinj.

T

Triglav is an ancient symbolic and geographical centre point of Slovenia. When we look up towards its face, and rejoice on its summit, it is a place to meet. However, mountains also carry an element of separation, and a corresponding desire to overcome any form of division. In the past there were dissenting opinions on the use of mountain tops, as well as grazing, mining, and hunting; today, dierent types of Alpine land use are jointly regulated under an agreement to protect the area as a park, and the Triglav Glacier is an important part of its legacy. Not so long ago, the use of these mountain areas was determined by the extent of the ice cover also in the summer. Now a few remaining snow ďŹ elds in July, and the Triglav Glacier in the autumn, are the only testament to this past time. Until summer, the glacier is protected with a layer of snow, which melts away before autumn, revealing the dark-green perennial ice. The ice is melting, and the glacier is shrinking visibly: since mid-ď™„ď™Œth century, its surface area has shrunk from ď™‡ď™ƒ ha to just over one hectare. The ice of the Triglav Glacier melts into ice water which ows on the surface briey before draining into the karst underground to feed the SoÄ?a and Sava Rivers on both sides of Triglav. Ultimately, the dark-green hues of mountain meadows and the perky purple of the sum-

mits blend into the emerald green waves of Alpine rivers. Inspired by their beauty, I chose karst springs as the topic of my graduate thesis. Still, these underground springs do not reveal all the secrets of the glacier. Some water freezes back to ice on its way through underground crevices and cavities. It seems as if the glacier is trying to hide from us, moving partly and slowly underground where it will, undisturbed and unseen, persist longer than it has on the surface. The phenomenon of karst ice caves is relatively unknown and under-studied. Until recently, access to abysses, including the Triglav abyss, was blocked by ice plugs. Although ice surface has shrunk there, underground ice masses in the bosom of the mountain are much more extensive than expected. Perennial ice in caves helps maintain the stability of the ow minimum of springs and water courses in the valley, on which park residents depend. Even though vanishing, or better, moving into inaccessible darkness of the underground world, the glacier continues to give the landscape below an image of paradise. It provides the inhabitants of the park with water, thereby permitting their existence, and ensures a unique coexistence of “(un)touchedâ€? mountains and “culturalâ€? valley landscape that is so typical of Triglav National Park. •

OzaveĹĄÄ?evalne aktivnosti, ki jih organizira jz tnp, zato v letoĹĄnjem letu naĹĄo dragoceno vsakdanjo spremljevalko obravnavajo z vseh vidikov in v vseh oblikah.

In the form of seas, water created our mountains, shaped them through glacial and uvial action, and continues to modify Earth’s surface as we speak. Biodiversity, landscape appearance and human settlements all depend on a certain area’s abundance of water supplies. In ď™…ď™ƒď™„ď™Š, tnp organises a series of awareness-raising campaigns that study and present water in all aspects and forms.

ALI STE VEDELI? DID YOU KNOW? 1. Triglavski narodni park spada med najbolj namoÄ?ena obmoÄ?ja Slovenije in Evrope. PovpreÄ?na letna koliÄ?ina padavin je najviĹĄja v zahodnem delu parka in znaĹĄa okoli ď™†ď™ƒď™ƒď™ƒ mm/m2. Triglav National Park ranks among the most watered areas in Slovenia and Europe. The average precipitation level is highest in the western part of the park and amounts to about ď™†ď™ƒď™ƒď™ƒ mm/m2. 2. The park is home to over ď™…ď™ˆď™ƒ large and small springs. They are habitats of organisms that thrive in clean waters. Many springs are also a source of drinking water. 3. Visokogorska jezera so biseri Triglavskega narodnega parka. To so veÄ?inoma majhne vodne povrĹĄine, zato so zelo obÄ?utljive za spremembe v okolju. Kopanje v njih ni dovoljeno. Mountain lakes are the pearls of Triglav National Park. Mostly small water areas, lakes are highly sensistive to any changes in the environment. No bathing is allowed in these lakes. 4. V Triglavskem narodnem parku zaÄ?enjata svojo pot dve pomembni evropski reki: SoÄ?a in Sava. Two important European rivers, the Sava and the SoÄ?a, take their source in Triglav National Park. The SoÄ?a ows into the Adriatic Sea, and the Sava drains into the Black Sea. The dividing line between the two watersheds runs through the heart of Triglav National Park.

5. Visoka barja so poseben vodni ekosistem. V Sloveniji so zelo redka, zato jih ĹĄe posebej varujemo. Raised bogs are a special water ecosystem. They are extremely rare in Slovenia and deserve a special protection status. Raised bogs can support plants adapted to harsh living conditions. For more information about raised bogs, visit a theme trail on the Pokljuka plateau.
